The latest update for the Microsoft Xbox 360 is set to be released in the next coming days, reports msxbox-world. The long rumored update adds a key feature the 360 has been missing against its rival the PlayStation 3 — Full Stereoscopic 3D.
The new update will allow users to enabled 3D for use with their 3D TV sets – giving the Xbox 360 full stereoscopic 3D. The dashboard text reads “Enable 3D to use stereoscopic 3D in games and experiences that support it”. The dashboard option also has a setting to auto detect TV size or allow users to input their screen size manually.
Games like Gears of War 3, Batman: Arkham City and Halo CE: Anniversary, are confirmed to be enabled with 3D support. Anyone excited? Will you use the feature? Let us know below!

About time
lol
This update ONLY ads option to AUTOMATICALY switch to 3D game that has 3D support (and of course if you have 3D TV)
Fully Stereostopic 3D games are on X360 since 2009 year for Ch. sake.
First 3D stereostopic game was Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao (playstation.about.com/od/previews/a/3DInvincibleTiger.htm) – and it came 26 August 2009 – a dey EARLIER than on PS3 (where it was too a first 3D 3D steorostophic game), then Avatar 3D, Call of Duty Black Ops, Crysis 2 etc.
List of stereoscopic video games on PS3 and X360:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_stereoscopic_video_games
PS3 has way more 3D games and better quality 3D than the Xbox plus on top games. Woopy do lol the Xbox had the first 3D game 1 day erlier [lmfao] so tha tmeans the same time to anyone who had the game before it was supposed to be out, they just got released a day after another.
PS3 is the king console for 3d games, I never said its about time the Xbox had 3d you Dimillo, I said its about time for this update, Ive played COD and Crysis 3CD on the Xbox and its poor.
The ps3 is better in 3D games xbox 360? Hahaha you kidding? the facts point to another reality, just look in 3d games xbox360 vs ps3 examples call of duty black ops, Crysis 2, Avatar the game, they have better graphics and better frame rates in 3D on Xbox 360 than the PS3.
the Xbox 360 has enough games in 3D, is a list:

About time! Typical M$ dragging the innovation chain…… Still won’t work for movies though lulz. Too little too late…….
Certainly, First the copy the button layout of the PS controller nearly exactly, then there bright new idea was just a turbo Eye Toy from the PS2 with Kinnect, now they are half arsing 3D which again the PS3 has had for ages and to the fullest.
Lol they really need to start thinking outside the box or something and stop just copying other companies, they cant even think or invest in any new great exclusives to take note of and are pushing Halo to 3 more games XD
Exactly. There are too many imitation examples to mention……… “gaylo” Shit that game bores me. They milking the franchise waaayyyy too much now.
@samchez77 alias “fantard supreme leader”
Milking the franchise????? What about the cod of war franchise??? How many freakin’ games have been squeesed from the nipples of that franchise????Hmmmm , What? I can’t hear you fantard? what was that? Exactly. Are you always this STUPID or just when you post on this site?
Just like how Sony copied the wii mote from Nintendo (Move) and copied the achievement system from MS (trophies) and the guide button from the xbox360 controller. Everybody copies everyone. Don’t act like MS is the only company who does it. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.
But M$ does it the most, and aggressively to try and wipe out businesses. Let see, Netscape>M$ Explorer, Yahoo messenger>m$n messenger, Google>Bing, Yahoo7>NineM$N (Aus), iPod>Vuze, PS2>Xbox, Eyetoy>Kinect, etc and f*cking etc.
Wii is just an EyeToy with a controller though.
Actually sony started working on the move before nintendo did on the wiimote. its just nintendo beat sony to the punch and the guide button was on the ps3 from the beginning so it didnt copy. and also Microsoft didt start the achievement system the just used it differently than other companys cus I was earing trophies on nba 2k5 on my ps2
well the fanboy left I see lol
360 copy PS button layout? Never played the SNES then have you. And c’mon Kinect is much more advanced than the Eye Toy. Sony copies too you know such as Wiimote and Achievements and PSN has increasingly become more organised the way XBL which is a good thing since XBL had a much better layout. In fact all tech industries copy each other lest they get left behind.
As for 3-D gaming in stereoscopic 3-D, well judging by DF analysis current gen tech is too weak to handle it at decent frame rates plus graphics have to be pared back as well. 3-D gaming on 360 has fared better technically due to not being stereoscopic,
Thats what I said, Kinnect IS an advanced version of the Playstatino Eye Toy, whichever way you look at it lol.
And PS Movew is using the exact same concept of the Eye toy but adding a controller and they even had the idea befor Nintendo to do that, evne though it is not the same concept but just ‘upgrading’ the PS Eye Toy [unlike Microsoft just copying it lol]
As for 3D, the 3D game I have played on the PS3 such as Killzone 3 and Motorstorm and GT5 look pretty dam amazing for 6 year old hardware and very very good. Sorry if you have not had the same experience with the Xbox but the PS3 handles it well, and as for Bluray 3D movies, Awsome.
I know about Virtual Boy, but I also know about Playstation Eye, so if that’s your case i fail to see your point. Both this visor and Kinect were innovative. They weren’t out of the blue ideas, sure, they had older projects to improve upon, but they were new products that massively improved upon the older technology. With the logic of people who say Kinect simply copied the PS Eye, i could also state that color tv was nothing to get excited about because we already had black and white tv. HD was nothing exciting because we already had SD. Blu Ray was nothing exciting because we had DVD, and DVD was nothing exciting because we had VHS.
SMH you guys act like the older generation that hate’s everything about how the younger generations act, talk, dress, and everything in between.
http://www.lensoftruth.com/sony%E2%80%99s-3d-visor-to-change-3d-forever/comment-page-1/#comment-38033
I just copied and pasted, so idk if everything applies, but yeah anyway im sure 90% of the world dont give a F*** who came up with what first. They only get credit up until it gets improved upon. Technology works like that for everything, something comes out with something, then someone else improves. Thats how it works get over it.
“Anyone excited? Will you use the feature?” Meh, Not me 3D is just a fad. I don’t use it on my Ps3 and I won’t on my 360.
What PS3?
His amazing PS3 that he plays all those games that he judges on, just like Android’s amazing PC that he still has yet to tell any details about to anyone.
It took ms long enough to have 3d actually on 360, though i don’t see how its full 3d support when last time i check 360 only had 1.2 hdmi port which does not support 3d. Ps3 was able to do it for awhile since its 1.3 hdmi port and thats all you really need for it. If 360 got it it got it, but watching 3d movies on 360 isn’t going to happen since most 3d movies are in blu ray format now and not dvds.
thats right, I forgot about the HDMI 1.2 on the Xbox. I wonder how they are going to get around that! It will also be interesting to see how the system handles all the extra processing reqiurements.
Lmfao the Xbox is rockin a 1.2 HDMI???? hahaa I never even knew, maybe that explains the picture not being as good quality on the Xbox as my PS3 with my 1.4 and 1.3 cables.
Man.. Half the Xbox’s or even more dont even have a HDMI lmao, the only ones that do is the new slim version and they only have 1.2?
Gheez
ya like i said 360 to my knowledge only has 1.2 hdmi and thats in all the elites. 360 may have 1.3 now but its probably only in the slims.
I don’t think the ps3 has 1.4 the slims may after 2009 cause thats when 1.4 was introduced but the fatty ps3 i know only have 1.3. Either way ps3 still has the edge due to 3d movies only made now for blu ray
First PS3 (FATs) also have only 1.2 chip inside: formatwarcentral.com/2007/05/08/does-the-ps3-really-have-hdmi-13/
Silicon Image HDMI chipset SiI 9132
So what?
Even HDMI 1.0 has enoug bandwidth for 1920x1200x60fps.
3D with 2 720p frames for eyes as used most common on PS3 is only 1280×1440.
X360 can use (and do so in most its 3D games) 1920×1080 frame split in half.
For 30fps games you can use full 1920×1080 – sending first frame for one eye then for second one.
I know this, I was jsut saying the Xbox didnt evne have a HDMI til the Elite and now its still only got 1.2 HDMI? lol talk about trailing behinde XD
Plus PS3′s 3D is far superior to Xbox’s 3D
I don’t care… i tried the 3D in Killzone and other games and i didn’t liked it at all. But it’s good for movies!!
At this rate they’ll soon be getting exclusives as well lol
What exclusives?
A treasure hunting game called Undiscovered where you play a dashing rogue named Norman Dias who teams up with his mentor Vern “F*cking” Solomon and his girlfriend Anna Francis to find the lost city of Atlantis in a globe trotting adventure exclusive to the Microsoft Xbox 360.
I loled at this. Nice one.
hahahaha me too.
LMFAO this was pretty funny.
Yeah, because Sony invented the 3rd dimenson.
I invented the B-dimension!
3D is one of the most benign and useless features and it makes me facepalm when I see sony putting millions of dollars into a feature that only probably 2% of the market is even utilizing. They could be putting time and money into so many other things, and games like Uncharted 3 and Killzone 3 would look better if they just threw the 3D crap out of the window. So for any bandwagon for Microsoft to jump onto, this has to be one of the dumbest.
I must add current gen tech can’t handle stereoscopic 3-d without paring back the graphics and frame rate.
Again, Killzone 3 and Uncharted 3 are already amazing as is, an are some of the best graphics on consoles, but they would look downright mind blowing if they just dropped the 3D bullsh*t and focused on incredible looking visuals in 2D.
3d is quiet quick and easy to implement since sony itself created a 3d dev kit which makes adding 3d painless and it won’t effect the 2d at all. Plus let the people (me) that want 3d have it pretty pleeeease. I spent the money on the glasses and I don’t want that purchase to go to waste
So weird, I’ve played Avatar, Crysis 2, COD, and a few more games in Stereoscopic 3D on my Xbox360, Without HDMI 1.3 ( in fact i did it using vga cable) and no system update was needed…..
HDMI 1.3 required….. I call it MARKETING……
The first game suporting stereoscopic 3D on consoles was Avatar, and it was a time ago…….
It’s not native 3D on the 360, Crysis, COD and all other that have so called 3D support is just a side by side image displayed on your screen. I believe the only Native 3D games on PS3 are exclusives.
You belived wrong, all 3D games use side by side or top/bottom.
Crysys has a ‘fake’ 3 D in that it generate its 3D picture by plane shift – weapon on first plane, rest on second, background third etc.
Similiar to ‘fake’ 3D mode in Mortal Kombat on PS3.
CoD has proper 3D.
LOL at sonyfantards that think that microsoft copy it to $ony XD,well at least if they copy something they sell it better and make it better than $ony. What about move? LOL that was a epic fail,i dont remember the last time that blockbuster was selling that crap in my city.In the oter hand kinect sells like crazy by itself. That a big difference. If the 98% of the multiplats look better on xbox then with this 3d will wipe out the ps3 more than usually does HAHAHA.
Xbox can’t do 3d as good as the ps3. The cell can handle 3d better plus the edram is a big NONO for 3d so expect a major cut in 3d on the xbox
If you ever played 3d games on the ps3 you will know it’s NOT a fad in gaming. Wipeout, Super stardust hd, and motortstorm looks amazing in 3d and adds a nice sence of depth to the game. Close minded people are dumb
Better than xbox 360, you mean paring back graphics and lowering the resolution, as seen on Killzone 3 and Uncharted 3? xD funny……
xbox already has half the framerate cut in any 3d game so far lol. On the ps3 it’s cut 20-30% no more.
“Ps3 already has half the framerate cut in any 3d game so far lol. On the Xbox360 it’s cut 20-30% no more”
Fixed…..
Just because something sells well does not make it a better product, just the right marketing campaign. Proof of this are Wii sales, a vastly under powered console that had dominated sales since day one. Using Kinect as a defence is embarrassing on your part superloc23. It’s absolute rubbish, as are the games for it. But boy, M$ are spending a fortune pushing it. 3D is just another example of M$ failing to read market potential. Similar to thier push for HD-DVD. Oops!
Its not about a powefull console, its about to have fun with it.Nintendo has some really good games, way better than any $ony ps3 exclusive, just like mario galaxy and the zeldas ;D,oh i see you are a fantard XD,you believe that uncharted and god of war are better than zelda or mario, yeah sure hahaha. Then you will say that they are better than halo, gears, alan wake, forza…XDDD
uncharted, infamous, heavy rain, littlebigplanet, modnation racers, ratchet and clank, and god of war shitted on all of those xbox exclusives you mentioned lol.
modnation racers, ratchet and clank? what are those? LOL yeah they shit on gear of war 3 and all the epicness. Are you serious? I dont know a person than actually have played alan wake and say that heavy rain, modnation, ratchet and clank are better.Thats bs dude.Am pretty sure that you havent played alan wake once.Theres no game like it.But yeah am talking with a ps3fantard XD.
yeah but none of those are at Halo/Master Chief status. Its like Nintendo has Mario and Microsoft has Master Chief. Whatdoes sony have crash bandigoot bahahaha
lol ratchet and clank is an amazing aaa action adventure game. Modnation racer is a the littlebigplanet of racing. Maybe you could get your head out of the toybox and its nothing but shooters ass and learn about it. Heavy rain out sold alan wake and out rated alan wake as well. Metal gear shits on gears. Sony has kevin butler b*tch suck on that or just go “pew pew pew” on your kinect bwhahaha
Here we got with this Alan Wake shit again. The game sucked balls and the graphics blew ass. I would stop trying to portray that as a good game on the 360 because it’s not and it certainly is no Heavy rain in any way graphically or story wise.
@Superloco23
Heavy Rain is undeniably one of the best storylines on any game ever created. The game is mainly based on quick time events, but it’s a fun game. If you’ve ever played Indigo Prophecy, which is on PS2, PC, and XBOX, then just think of a much better version and that’s Heavy Rain.
Alan Wake while a decent game, and personally I like the graphics, sorry to say Heavy Rain is much better. No contest.
“yeah but none of those are at Halo/Master Chief status”
Uncharted 2: Metascore of 96
LittleBigPlanet: Metascore of 95
Metal Gear Solid 4 – Guns of the Patriots: Metascore of 94
God of War III: Metascore of 92
Killzone 2: Metascore of 91
Oh my, it seems that two of those first party sony exclusive games have a higher average rating than any Halo game. The third (which is a 3rd party mind you) has the same metascore while coming out a year later, and the two other highly scoring games have come out two or three years later. Furthermore, I hear nothing but people talking about how Uncharted 2 is “one of the greatest games ever made” while hearing no level of that praise about the highly rated Gears of War or Halo franchises. Well SPINERUSH08, as my hero JD Denton would say… What a shame.
Just kill yourself… the world would be better without fantards like you… god, i hate ppl like this b***h
How do I English?
also XDDDDDDDDDDD THE MORE D’S THE BETTER!!!
not to forget that MS said 3D would be better in 360 than ps3
Only time will tell.
it can’t ps3 hardware is better for 3d
http:// community. us. playstation. com/ thread / 2276654?start=0 &tstart=0
“1) The XBOX can not do 1080P 3-D at 60Hz due to the 1.2 HDMI ports transfer speed limits but the HDMI 1.2 port may be able to do 1080P 3-D at 24Hz.
2) The Xbox hardware GPU advantage over the PS3 RSX is lost when doing 1080P 2-D and 720P 3-D. The PS3 then becomes, by contrast, more efficent and easier to program and every bit counts when two frames must be generated in the same time. This was the reason the PS3 has a configurable frame buffer and some of the graphics processors in the Nvidia 7800 were removed in favor of the CELL SPEs.
How did the Xbox do the 3-D games Avatar and Gen Tao. Those were done half resolution 720P. Another interesting point is that the game Avatar rendered at 30Hz on both the Xbox and PS3 but packed (two frames at half resolution) into, depending on display device, 60 Hz frames. My DLP required 60HZ checkerboard (slightly more than half resolution) double frame (packed) and the DLP pulled the two frames out and displayed at 120 Hz.
Many were questioning the PS3 ability to do 3-D as the assumption was the PS3 was less powerful due to comparisons in frame rate between Avatar 3-D running on the Xbox and PS3. The difference here is SONY did not provide 3-D SDKs for Avatar but is now providing the SDK calls for 3-D and developers will now have proven code to write 3-D games. MS may do the same at some point.
The XBOX half resolution 3-D will be enough for the streaming 3-D being proposed for current set top boxes (HDMI 1.4a addendum). Some of the proposed standards for HDMI 1.4 will probably be supported by the XBOX. The PS3 can support all HDMI 1.4 display modes, some of which are NOT possible for the XBOX due to the HDMI 1.2 port.
The PS3 RSX uses the 256 meg of Gddr3 shared memory for video buffers. The Xbox uses 10 Meg of very fast video ram INSIDE the xbox GPU for a buffer. This makes it easier for the xbox to do things like AA but makes it less flexible. The design criteria of the Xbox was for a very efficient 720P game machine. The PS3 was designed to be more flexible and for this flexibility the PS3 takes a hit in efficiency at lower res. But it allows software configuration for things like new video modes including 3-D and double 1080P res.
Each of the 6 Cell SPE processors is faster/more efficient at video processing than each of the Power PC processors in the Xbox. You have to think of them as idiot savants, faster at repetative tasks. This makes the Cell faster where it counts and the choice of memory that is 2 times faster than the XBOX GDDR3 supports the faster speed necessary for 1080P and 3-D on the PS3. (As idiot savants the Cell SPEs require more supervision and more complex code; this is the reason many developers were not getting the most out of the PS3).”
That’s why a lot of 3rd party game would be better in 360 even in 3D mode but not as close as any PS3 Exclusives which uses the main purpose of the SPE’s.
You didn’t read the full thing did you -_-
How do I read more than 2 sentences?
I just forgot too :’(
I really love the new spunkeez
Motherf*cker, this is Spunkeez f*cking classic. Put me in a god damn can and preach that this is the true, unadulterated taste of Spunkeez that should sold at any fine retailers unlike whatever that c*nt tasting New Spunkeez is. Taste includes a full-bodied, delusion free hit of reality with a pleasant, subtle aftertaste of “Glad I could help”.
Holy sh*t… I should work for Sony.
Microsoft says allot of things.
- When PS3 got stereoscopic 3D over a year ago -
Xbots: “Oh, 3D in games is stupid. 3D TV’s suck. I don’t need 3D.”
- When 360 finally gets stereoscopic 3D -
Xbots: “Oh than you thank you thank you, Microsoft! You are totally a innovative and original corporation! Just let me run out and grab a 3D TV real quick, before I bend over and take it up the ass by you.”
360 fail.
lulz. Yes. 360 fail.
PS MOVE an epic win!!!! oh wait ):
ps move superior fps controller vs xbox controller and kinect, and isn’t far from keyboard mouse accuracy so yea epic win!!!
Kincet oth “Pew Pew Pew” lol
MS Kinect an epic win!!!! oh wait ):
PS Move is amazing as a controller for FPS games and superior to even a mouse and keyboard, it sh!ts all over a normal pad.
You dont hold it in the air with your arm raised like a moron, you rest it on your lap like a pad and have the sensitivity very high and twitch your wrist very slightly, takes a while but you get usedto it and when you do you own like hell and its a far better experience than the pad and YOU are controlling it with tiny movements, epic way to game is hard to go back to the controller after you get stuck in the Move mode.
The ps3 move is nothing but a crappy imitation of the wii motion and looks like a full erected penis. Keep out the reach of your girlfriend!
sony was tesing the move before the wii was even mentioned lol u = a miserable tool
That is such bs, seriously, move better than mouse and Keyboard? Hah! fine, make a PC game work with Move, and we can try it, you know it’s complete bs.
And I’m not a big fan of Kinect either, I think they are both bad outside casual games, the only reason I got Kinect was to be able to access the Xbox without a controller, Move is just a Wiimote on steroids.
though the move did not sell as well as the kinect no brainier there, but when it actually comes to games worth playing and accurate 1:1 move beats kinect 2:1. Kinect is advance tech and big improvement over the eye toy as the move is the same with the wii mote. the only problem kinect has no true games and has horrible 1:1 motion. Just look at the star wars game that was shown at e3 it was very on rails and not accurate.
i remember my NES being 3d.. actually.. the controller came at my head in 3d.. dont remember much after that.. but it wasnt that great
its a shame this generation is coming to an end
When you want to have the BEST 3d, just buy nvidias 3d vision kit, it offers the best native 3d
F*@k that i only wanna play 3D games on xbox 720 because these graphics for consoles today are not wort to play in 3D
Unfortunately the 360 will not be getting full resolution native 3D like the PS3 any time soon. There are already many stereoscopic 3D games on the 360 which use side-by-side, over-under, checkerboard or similar methods to squeeze the two eye images into one, losing half the resolution. I would bet we will only see it on a new model 360.
Wow the cows seems like they are the ones that developed 3D and knows everything about development and progress in that industry! , you guys do know there is alot of different 3D tech right ? ps3fans really amuse me on on this its laughable !, you guys seriously nitpick everything on the xbox – when you cant nitpick the games, since the ps3 dont have the superior versions etc etc! all you guys got is things that doesnt matter at all in the long run, get both consoles and a gaming pc problem solved ohh i forgot the ps3 is some sort of alien technology .. Lmao
http://images.cheezburger.com/completestore/2011/5/31/170b46e0-09e9-4ff8-970d-b0f60815895c.jpg
That pic is more important than all the crap you’re all boasting lol
They’re entertainment people, stop sucking MS/Sony’s dick.
Sweet! Now I can buy another HD TV with 3D.
F*&% you Sony and Microsoft!
Wow, there is a ton of misinformation in these comments. Technical explanations of the 3d capabilities of the 360 and PS3 but they are all wrong.
The PS3 updated to HDMI 1.4, which supports 1080p24 and 720p60 framepacking.
The 360 has used for the past year top/bottom and Side-by-side 3d which runs up to 1920x540p60 or 960x1080p60. It is essentially half of 1080p. Which, guess what, is still more pixels than 1280x720p60. The PS3 only supports 3D via HDMI 1.4 which at 60hz is limited to 1280×720.
360 supports 3D via HDMI 1.2, VGA, component and yes composite. That is because side-by-side and top/bottom are frame compatible formats that fit inside the the normal frames. This limits them to a maximum of half 1920x1080p (still more than 720p).
THIS IS WHAT THE 360 SUPPORTED BEFORE THIS NEW UPDATE. We’ve seen plenty of side-by-side games for 360 over the past year. This update merely brings the system dashboard 3d support too.
The other interesting thing is that side-by-side and top/bottom scale perfectly into a 1080p display. The pixels line up perfectly, there is simply a 2x stretch on one axis. The 720p framepacking supported by HDMI 1.4 and the PS3 needs to be scaled on both axis to reach 1080p, and it needs an uneven scaling that means the pixels don’t line up. This causes extreme quality degradation.
So Side-by-side and top/bottom were supported long before HDMI 1.4 and they are superior to the 60hz formats offered by HMDI 1.4.
The only thing HDMI 1.4 brings of any importance is 1080p24 framepacking which is great for movies, but terrible for gaming.
MEH, games or movies, I dont really enjoy 3D, I wanna a real hologram
@HIXBOT: That is mostly correct. The gotchas are:
a) Most 1080p TV’s do an excellent job at upscaling 720p content (not “extreme quality degradation”).
b) The PS3 does not have the power to push out full 720p@60 3D*.
c) The 360 does not have the power to push out full half-res 1080p@60 3D* (which is 12.5% pixel count above frame-packed 720p 3D).
d) Not all 3D TV’s are 1080p.
e) HDMI 1.4a defines the primary video format 1080p@30Hz which is suitable for gaming. The PS3 “should” be updated to support it but it would have limited use – see item b).
f) At the same display resolution all of the half-res formats are inferior to frame-packed 3D.
g) HDMI 1.4 3D compatibility also brings auto-detection of a connected 3D display and the necessary control codes to tell the TV to automatically switch to 3D mode. Only a select few 3DTV’s can auto-detect the half-res formats and even on these it is a bit hit and miss.
h) Passive 3DTV’s dedicate half the physical display to each eye (typically alternate lines). Half-res 3D in the opposite configuration (e.g. side by side) means that the TV displays only one quarter the resolution. Some 360 games only support side-by-side.
* except for games with last-gen geometry like the up-coming God of War HD remakes on the PS3, or simple 2D-like games with 3D layering like some side-scollers. Gran Tusimo 5 is the best overall with full 720p, high detail, anti-aliasing, but frame rate varying between 30 and 50 fps.
Squiggle,
Fair points.
You are correct, not all 3DTVS are 1080p, and I admit framepacked 720p is by far the best format for 720p displays/projectors.
but itn the world of 1080p displays…..
I realize most games are rendered below 720p or half-rez 1080p but there’s a significant difference in the method and quantity of scaling.
Lets take a game rendered at 600p.
The console will scale it to the selected output display resolution. Whether thats 720p or half 1080p it’s going to be a uneven pixel multiplication, so we see some definition lost from the native 600p. Lossy scaling.
The process after that is whats different.
For SbS or T/B signal, the half rez 1080p is given an even and simple multiplication of 2 on one axis. There is no degradation.
For framepacked 720p it gets the standard 720p to 1080p lossy scaling done by tv hardware.
It may be fine for most video sources, but gamers cherish their pixels. Especially when we’re dealing with a mere 600p source (in this example).
So its two lossy scaling vs one. Maybe extreme was a strong word.. but that’s in the eye (lense) of the beholder.
(If the game were rendered in a common 540p the its 2 lossy scaling vs none)
Also, 1080p30 is not specified as a framepacked format under HDMI 1.4 or HDMi 1.4a. http://www.hdmi.org/press/press_release.aspx?prid=120
We’re stuck in 24hz for 1080p.
This upset many people including me. (Merely for PC gaming concerns.)
Although there are some TVs that will work with 30hz 3D over HDMI, but it’s not a HMDI standard.
Frame-packed 3d is only superior in regards to the automatic feature and thats it. There is nothing else that puts it ahead.
Honestly HDMI 1.4 brought nothing good for gamers.
PC gamers with NVIDIA cards are upset over the lack of Side-by-side and checkerboard options on Nvidia 3dtv play drivers. Because framepacked 720p looks worse than half rez 1080p. (on 1080p displays)
3D, meh! I really couldn’t care less, it’s fun in the cinema, but at home, I’ll use my normal TV, I’m quite fine with not having to wear glasses to play games or watch movies.
@HITBOX: Agreed on the differences in scaling but from a normal viewing distance you can’t tell the difference.
Frame-packed 1920x1080p@30 is defined in the standard. See http://www.hdmi.org/manufacturer/specification.aspx then download the 3D portion.
I know lots of people are against 3D, and that’s fine. But for those of us that do care about 3D – can a “non-fanboy” please help me understand the REAL difference between the PS3 offering and the 360 one? I’m thinking of buying Crysis 2, and whichever one has the better 3D, I’ll probably buy that version. Anyone out there know how to discern any kind of noticeable difference? Is one definitively better than the other?
@edburton6801: Firstly, Crysis 2 is one of the worst console 3D games available as the 3D is simply a couple of flat layers.

That was an anlysis of the demo but despite the developer comments the final release only had a very mildly tweaked layer effect which separated the main layer more toward the top of the screen. So objects are not truly calculated in 3D nor is reprojection used from a depth buffer (these are the two main methods used in better 3D games). Certainly, Crysis 2 owners report the 3D is ok, but it’s not as good as other games.
In terms of Crysis 2 in 2D the 360 has a slight edge (slightly better resolution and frame rate in general but the PS3 is better in some parts). In terms of 3D the PS3 is the better choice.
