Nier fans out there who have been wondering what’s next for developer Cavia will be happy to hear they’ve been hard at work on a new IP for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Siliconera reports [via a former employee of AQ Interactive and Cavia]. The game is a titled ‘Catacombs’ and is a team shooter RPG which will take place in the Museum of Natural History in New York.

Siliconera reports, the story begins with a crowd lining up to see an exhibit on a culture and religion when the player gets a glimpse of four people about to become heroes. All eyes are on the mysterious object when it emits a flash of light. Monsters suddenly fall from the ceiling and the floor crumbles.

The heroes awaken to find themselves as some of the last survivors. After a ride in a freefalling elevator to the bottom of the museum, the four puzzled heroes emerge from the rubble and find themselves in a twisted labyrinth.

Being a team based RPG shooter there are four character to choose from. Catacombs will also have randomly generated levels with narrow corridors and open rooms packed with enemies.

The report finishes by saying  – “Square Enix planned to reveal Catacombs during E3 2011 as a retail PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game. The game, our source says, is far along in development and was playable, but Square Enix isn’t sure if they will complete the title.”
