According to a recent report from European gaming site MCV [via Side Mission], “Microsoft has been telling partners that the Next Xbox will NOT include a disc drive.”
Anonymous sources tell MCV Microsoft in enforcing the “strictest non-disclosure agreement” they’ve ever seen. The report from MCV goes on to mention “compatibility with some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage”, though contextual details are scarce.
It’s one thing for Valve’s rumored Steam Box console to be disc drive-less, but the next Xbox? Will we get use to games being on “interchangeable solid-state card storage”?
Give us your thoughts below.

If this is true, MS will kill 2 birds with just one stone:
1.- second hand sales: the game card must have some sort of blank writable space for console id code so it wont boot on other console
2.- anti piracy and anti-bluray adoption: they wont use sony’s format for sure, in the case for piracy this will do nothing as cards can get dumped
If this is true they are dead already.
Steam seems to do just fine ? cant see how this is bad actually you gain alot of benefits from this also some cons ofc , but either DD or w/e they come up with is the way forward
ps as you know its a rumor .
Bad move Microsoft… Very bad move… Keep it up. PS4 will take next gen without a problem.
Everything will be downloaded
I dunno.. Maybe im too old school.. But when i buy a game, i want a physical copy i can actually hold and lick
It works on Vita, couldn’t imagine why it shouldn’t work on XBox3. I still prefer my games (Vita included) on physical storage for the same reasons you mentioned. I also wanna smell it.
OH so the next xbox will not have a dvd drive, it will have a BluRay Drive.
MS finally catching up to big leagues.
@ZOLRAK
1. they’ve been able to leave writable space on discs since 2000 (Sony actually has a patent on the method to do so) the only reason that haven’t used it is because of bad feedback from test groups.
2. Sony doesn’t own the format, it was collectively developed by a group consisting of multiple companies that are required by law to license their tech to any group that wishes to use it for a predetermined fee. (it’s why there are toshiba and magnavox blu-ray players instead of just sony players) hell the WiiU is expected to use blu-ray (it’s a disc format that has 25GB of space single layer and 50 GB dual layer so it’s pretty obvious that it’s a blu-ray.
@DIALGAMARINE
the same rumor is circulating for the PS4 that it is going to use SS carts (like the vita uses) since SD cards have become much cheaper with much higher space (I personally got a 32 GB one off of amazon for 28 bucks which would be much cheaper for a company to produce) so for now that’s up in the air.
@SUSHIBALLZ
it says that it’s going to us Solid state card storage so that might mean it’s going to use cartridges (which is good since cartridges load much faster than discs) though I find it kind of ironic that everything is going back to cartridges after discs were the “way of the future” trolol.
“Bad move Microsoft… Very bad move… Keep it up. PS4 will take next gen without a problem. ”
What makes you think PS4 will have a disk drive?
D And you can’t play PS2 games on PS3 anyways, so that makes a disk drive even less desirable as Sony won’t get any hate for not being backwards compatible.
Bring back cartridges and near instant loading times.
If u go on the eurogamer website it say there will two consoles, one which will be the cheap version with no disk drive, and the premium console targeted for hardcore gamers with a disk drive ect. I hate reading false information
.
@Deviltry Do you really believe that Sony, which sells movies as well, will dump the glorious (and cheap now to produce) Blu Ray drive? Not in 10 years at least. Not everyone in the World has (or will soon have) optical fibers Internet connections, you know…
lol, this rumor is just what it is, a rumor which reeks of bullshit. microsoft will never go with digital distribution only, sony made that mistake with the psp go which got so bad merchants refused to stock it.
who keeps on making these rumors up anyways?
M$ should not even bother releasing another console after teh failure that the last two have been. Whatever they bring out will be trumped when the PS4 eventually comes.
I wonder how mcuh of a failure rate their console will have plus how much they’ll rip Sony off like last time with their eye toy and other things.
omg the troll is back
I doubt this is true. Production & manufacture cost will be higher. Much cheaper to print discs than manufactue hardware. Microsoft MAY have a focus on downloadble software and the disc drive will be optional to keep the initial console costs down. But thats a HUGE maybe and I doubt they will be that frugle. Thats my 2 cents. Don’t panic………..yet.
Do I have to blow in this “card”?
I think XBOX stinks for comming up with such an idea. I wont beable to buy used games. Everything will be at “new” price. Just another scam trying to suck every dollar out of our wallets – typical monopolistic idea.
If ya’ll think their is going to be nintendo shaped games your wrong – it will be all downloadable from the internet
