Good news for anyone planning on picking up id Software’s RAGE. John Carmack has confirmed via a Tweet that textures in RAGE will be exactly the same across platforms.
The question asked to John most likely stems from a rumor that the PlayStation 3 version of RAGE would be using a PC level “super texture” pack. This appears not to be the case. You can view Carmack’s Tweet below. RAGE launches October 4th on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

What? PC is supposed to have 4x larger textures…
Thats nice to see that problems with splited in two parts RAM on PS3 (and smaller amout of it free due to bigger footprint of PS3 OS) that Carmack had mentioned earlier were overcomed.
I’m so sick of hearing about this over-rated douche.
hhahahahaaha, what the hell?! What rumor?! oh, you mean this one.
“This got us thinking about John’s statement about Doom 4 possibly using the mystical “super texture” pack for the PS3 version out of the gate due to the Blu-ray disc”
That’s not a rumor, that’s a thinking-out-loud and running with it.
Read on IGN that the PS3 would require an 8GB install, while the 360 would come in 3 discs…
Holy —-!
So much for those “super textures” some guy around here was talking about :/
id Tech 5′s virtual texturing solution allows the game to page and stream textures in a more intelligent and efficient manner, with the end result that all three platforms can use the same texture sets in the final build without worrying about RAM limitaitons. The PC build WILL NOT suffer – virtual texturing will be more aggressive in the console builds as it swaps textures into the RAM and clears them more frequently.
Most of the other commentors here are very ignorant of how it works and are jumping to conclusions in order to conveniently support their asinine platform wars.
I’m actually more surprised to learn that the PC doesn’t have higher textures than the consoles. Thought it would have a clear advantage. Huh…
By “all platforms”, I think carcrash means PS3 & 360.
no he means what he says”ALL platforms”
Yeah ok smart arse. If you notice the question put to Carmack refers only to consoles, no mention of PC. If the PC version of RAGE equals the console version then something is very very wrong.
Poor viagraMarine
He posted about the ps3 version having super textures and got rather excited about it.
This must be a crushing disappointment to him
The “Super Texture pack” that they were talking about is for Doom 4.
lol
I read the article when he posted it, but I didn’t want to burst his bubble.
He might be crying right now.
@cr@pdroid, $hittile, You two are such a fail, words cannot describe.
WTF?!
I thought you’d be spending every waking minute on the BF3 beta.
I’m shocked!!!
Havn’t got the beta yet you ape.
We’ll wait for the H2H Android and Reptile. Just get that moltrin ready to deal with the severe level of butthurt you’re going to feel afterwards.
Lol, Yup.. Get your @sses ready fellas
With Rage supposedly running at 60fps without frame drops, the best version will have better texture loading and less pop in. With Lens of Truth comparing both games out of the box and based on John Carmack’s quote of the 360 version without the disc install, sounds like this is going to be a PS3 win.
I think to be fair LOT will have to do a head to head one without install and one with install”this would br the right thing to do’and im sure they will.
I agree, since it’s a game that was designed primarily for PC whichever one has the game installed (even partially) on the drive is going to have an advantage. not to mention that Carmack has publicly stated that it’s meant to be installed on the 360. even if they have an “out of the box” policy I think they should make an exemption for this.
I’m sure they will install the 360 version this time richie.
Even if they add a little bit of info at the bottom of their rage h2h, something like ‘this is the results if you install the game to 360 hd’
You can install each disc separatly on the 360 version, they don’t need to install the whole thing in one go.
Just install disc 1 and compare those sections in the h2h between ps3 and 360.
Much more fairer than comparing a whopping 8gb ps3 hd game to a plain old dvd drive.
It’s over to LOT now to see if they make the sensible choice
imagine if PS3 got the win…………….I would love that for no other reason other than to see buying1999 tears of grief. That would be gold. I think buying1999 has a crush on Carcrash.
Where’s NIGEL?!
Did he get banned?
@reptile, Lol why do you care? You’re the one that’s suppose to get banned. Worry about yourself
Why do have to act like a douche all the time?
Poor genetic material?

Weren’t these dudes saying that PC things would be a lot better than consoles? Hmmmmm! Lot’s of hype for nothing?
On PC it will: render at a higher resolution, allow higher FSAA and AF, presumably support vsync and triple buffering (not sure if consoles will have it), and textures will be displayed at a higher resolution more frequently.
I love console gaming very much & my childhood gaming life started with cartridge gaming (forgotten what name already but sure know its more then 20 years).
6 years back bought Dell E1705 with 7900gs go for gaming. It served its purpose for 4 years. Too bad after that its awfully slow even for mmo game at lowest setting. Its a miracle it can last for 4-5 years. I owe it all to “console” coz console really helped gaming notebook to extend its gaming lifespan. Without console I may need to buy a gaming notebook every 1-2 years time due to the GPU cant handle the increasing processing power needed aka outdated…
I retire my E1705 already but still using it for other office application. Just bought a new gaming notebook at really cheap price & sure it will last me for another 3-5 years to come. Game at 720P for 2 years then downgrade resolution down the rod till its time for another upgrade lol.
Will probably game on notebook 60% of the time now due to convenience, time & work place portability. How I wish notebook can be just like gaming PC can keep on upgrading the GPU the way we like it… no need to buy new lappy all the time.
Be it PC/lappy or console I love all of em.
Lappy for portability coz i bring to work.
PC for raw power & multiplatform games
Console for complete ease of mind & exclusives
any word on the framerate? 60fps on both consoles?
That’s what everybody’s saying.
This is not bad news. In fact this is good news that textures is the same. But I am really worried about the framerate and resolution. Does Lens of Truth know anything about it? Because I am REALLY worried about it.
I haven’t actually read anywhere that Rage is 60 frames per second on PS3 yet, I’m hopeful it is but I haven’t seen that yet. Ive only read of the 60 hertz on all systems, has 60 fps been confirmed for Rage PS3?
If you go to youtube and type in “John Carmack speaks at Quake Con 11″, he says it when he’s speaking about the game and the difference of the game on each platform.. And he also mentioned it again in an interview after the conference; You should be able to see all of this pop when you type in (the above) keywords… But, I do specifically remembering him mentioning it was 60fps on PS3 and that the game is of “equal quality” on ALL platforms… “The poor guy has been repeating the same thing every time some one ask him about the game…”
Dont know why there isnt a super texture pack for teh PS3. I’m pretty damn sure it could handle it. Maybe their holding it back to make both PS3 and failbox versions equal. If thats teh case then I don’t want this game. Probably wont get time to play it anyway as I’ll be too busy playing Resistance 3, Uncharted, Team Ico collection and many more great Ps3 exclusives.
Just wanna throw it out there, there are now HD gameplay vids of Rage on youtube on both systems. I noticed in this http://youtu.be/O6yvW72A8q8 1st 20 mins PS3 video, when the player is looking up and down at around 2:30 on, there is a lot of texture pop in, and you can see this throughout the video as well. Seems like its a ram issue to me but idk. I noticed in a couple other play throughs on xbox 360, there was no texture pop in issue.
Im not trying to start a fanboy war, I’m just sharing this as I’m on my quest to purchase the best console version of Rage. Any thoughts on this anyone?…. Ram issue or the rasterizer issue Carmack spoke of?
And where are the links to the couple of XBox 360 play through, so we can compare them?
Well I thought the 360 Rage vids were easy for anyone to find, Gamespot.com has a dozen or so xbox 360 playthroughs, but none the less, heres a Xbox 360 playthrough from youtube for ya…. http://youtu.be/3LyTl2LRhqM
Also, there is a part 2 and 3 to the PS3 link I posted originally. The texture pop in continues in the PS3 version throughout and is way more noticeable I’m finding, throughout the PS3 version compared to xbox 360. Not sure why thats the case though.
I noticed very little pop in on the PS3 video you linked. Two small parts on the video. On the 360 video you linked which the player states it was installed, I only skipped to those two small parts so no idea if there was actually anymore pop in, I just didn’t want to watch the same thing all over again.
For a 20 minute gameplay video, less than half a second of texture pop in doesn’t matter one bit. Stop trying to make it sound like it’s more than it actually is.
Uhhh its a 20 minute video FULL of texture pop in. Every time he turns quickly, theres pop in. Throughout the whole gameplay. Please stop trying to think I’m flaming here or something, I’m not a fanboy because I own both systems. Just expressing what Im seeing.
