It looks like Microsoft and Call of Duty aren’t the only ones who can play the “timed exclusive expansion” game. Tommy Rydling, Jr. Product Manager at DICE, has announced that PlayStation 3 owners have the pleasure of playing any “flull-blown” Battlefield 3 expansion pack before anyone else. The exclusivity deal will begin with the Back to Karkand pack, and will follow with all “full-blown” expansion packs on the system. Below is a little of what Rydling had to say on blog.us.playstation.
“But that’s not all for our PlayStation fans! You’ll be happy to know that beginning with our first expansion pack Battlefield 3: Back to Karkand (to be released later this year), all full-blown upcoming expansion packs for the game will appear one week early exclusively on PS3, brought to you by Sony!
As you may or may not have heard, Battlefield 3: Back to Karkand is a themed expansion pack containing four of the most loved maps from Battlefield 2, boldly reimagined in the Frostbite 2 engine. It also features new weapons and vehicles, unique in-game dog tags, new persistence, as well as new Trophies.”

Well,this is great for ps3 users since this is one of few times where content comes on ps3 before xbox 360. But fortunately it´s timed exclusive so the content will end up on 360 as well. The head to head will show which is the best version and that will be the best version. I have a felling this game will be a tie or a 360 win since DICE games has been better on 360 like BFBC2.

PS3

There’s also some quite noticeable texture pop-in, which is a little unfortunate. But the water effects are beautiful, the lighting and shadow effects are extremely strong, and overall it’s a lovely-looking offering.
Xbox 360
Alas, it’s the weakest of the bunch. That isn’t to say it doesn’t look nice. Even on Xbox 360, the Frostbite 2.0 tech is strong. Unfortunately, there was some noticeable framerate stuttering in larger outdoor areas during my time with the game. That’s the biggest hurdle Battlefield 3 Xbox 360 will have to overcome before release, lest it be a little annoying.
Lighting and shadows, as well as reflections, are decent but not quite as strong as the PlayStation 3′s, and nowhere near the level of the PC. There’s some foliage pop-in as well, along the lines of that in the PS3 version. Interestingly, texture pop-in seemed to be almost entirely absent, although said textures are markedly lower-res – disappointingly blurry when up close, in fact.
So there we go! This is, of course, an unfinished build of the game, so these things may change before release. Watch out for our full hands-on Battlefield 3 preview in the coming days. And in the meantime, make sure you’re following all the latest Battlefield 3 news right here at BeefJack!”

I have to admit I’m getting quite a bit jealous about the PC gamers. But what should I do? None of my friends is playing on PC and I don’t want to spend a huge amount of money for a new PC.
But I’m really happy that the PS3 version seems to be a good port

Hard drive install can improve loading times, and texture loading times , but couldn’t improve framerates, lighting etc
Interesting to see my prediction of 360 having slightly inferior performance was correct.( you can all bow to me now lol) . I said the edram necessitating tiling would lead to this issue.
Surprised about reflections though, guess edam is just too full to deal with reflections at same level of detail( same with lighting) whilst dealing with everything else , and performance would drop more at higher levels

game is released is month, and it’s highly unlikely there will be massive changes, as game will go gold in few days, a week at best. More refinement no doubt, but all the technical aspects of the game point towards a slightly inferior 360 version. the tiling automatically puts 360 at distinct disadvantage, as it looses benefits associated with edram.

I would worry more about your friend list if you will be playing bf3 online, as it’s team based (unlike cod) and thus, if ur friends will be playing on 360, you will get far more out of game through them, than you will with some flashier effects on ps3.

Personally not a fan of cod that much, but think people are waaaay over the top with hatred for it.
I really think it’s sp sucks, but the mp is fun in short bursts. However , I just find it too shallow to hold my attention, but if others enjoy that, then that’s cool with me.
Think most hatred stems from being ps3 fanboys angry at black ops and the likely borked port of mw3, delayed dlc etc, and the fact that bf3 will look better on ps3, so it’s a way getting one up on 360 fanboys.
I think most hatred for it stems from people with both systems…. but its just a poor money hungry game that makes tonnes of money but gets hardly any of it spent on it, with very expensive DLC and nothing really changed each year just the same stuff.
Before or after MW2 the amount of Money Activision made from COD if they really cared for their customers and the people who actually play the game and wanted to make the best game they can [like most devs and publsihers] it would have and very easily could have;
-Dedicated servers
-Properly priced DLC
-A new engine [not this updated 12 year old pos]
-Better performance [well under 600p and 40-50fps with 5 year old dated graphics and effects is very very poor]
-A new take on the franchise, not this repeated generic cr@p
-Vastly improved in every area, its hardly changed and its not exactly near perfection
-An actual well thought out campaign that doeasnt resemble the campaign from the last games by being the same repeated cr@p in a different scene
-And most ceretainly no subscription BS
But no what they are doing with all the money made unlike other good devs is keeping a very very high amount of it and spending litrelly hardly any on the actual game to improve it or change it which can be easily done. But no they are;
-The same very poor cheap P2P servers
-Very expensive DLC , half of which was probably mostly made before the game comes out
-The same 12 year old engine that is extremely out dated just updated and tweeked a little each year.
-The same severe sub HD with poor 5 year old graphics and effects and not even very high framerate, should be atleast 60 fps, not 40-50
-Doing exactly the same thing since 5 years ago and which gets extremely boring dull and dumb… might aswell be DLC for MW1
-Not improved atall just slightly changed
-Some more cheese generic boring poor excuse of a campaign thats rinse and repeat and looks as if it was made and thought out on a budget of $1000
-And some nice overpriced subscription to try and lure more dumb kids getting money from there mummy.
These are the reasons people hate COD, not because it has slightly delayed DLC they wouldnt purchase anyway [because they dont even liek the game lol]
And not because its ported to 1 system when they could just play it on the Xbox or PC, all version look like a 2006 game anyway lol, well it practially is just updated a little…

Microsoft can bully the small time XBL/PSN developers, as they need the money, and they can’t fend for themselves. Microsoft’s threats will actually influence their decisions.
However, with this being EA, Microsoft can do nothing. Regardless of Microsoft’s policy, Sony has this DLC, and Microsoft knows it. All Microsoft will gain from sticking to their policy and not allowing the DLC to be released on XBL is a lot of lost revenue and several million angry gamers.
I think that only applies to the core content on the disc.In other words, PS3 versions can’t contain more in-game content or an overall better experience than the 360 version. BF3 is going to be the same experience across both platforms, and recieve the same DLC, only PS3 gets it first. That’s Microsoft for you: Forcing devs to give in to their ways and deffending a poor product.

No, Sony doesn’t have similar policies at all. Look at Steam for example: Microsoft doesn’t allow Valve to put Steam on XBox Live.

The only policy Sony has is that if the game is a port it has to have something extra. This applies whether it’s on the 360, the Wii, even the original Playstation. It doesn’t matter how much or how little is added, it just has to be an enhanced port.

I’m curious why people keep on automatically assuming that Rage will be a 360 win in the H2H. 3 discs and no mandatory install kindof knocks it’s chances down really far. When installed, it’ll probably be better on 360, but LoT doesn’t do installs unless they’re mandatory because of their “out of the box policy”.

I think Id´s RAGE will be tie or 360 win( I think it might be 360 win since 360 is lead version). Both versions will be equal probarly. But I think I read somewhere that the ps3 version had wonderful framerate and great graphics but the texture streaming was a really bad problem. I don´t remember the site though.

Why do people try so hard to “try” to prove that their purchase is superior?
The XBox 360 is not better than the PS3 and the PS3 is not better than the XBox 360.
A developer can make a game look better on the PS3 or they can make the game look better on the 360… it’s up to them (the developers) on which platform is better.
So therefore, you can’t say “The PS3 is more powerful because Battlefield 3 has 3 extra rocks in it!”… I’m sure DICE can make the game look exactly the same on both platforms but it all comes down to time and money. How long do you want them to spend on making both versions equal? How much money do you want them to spend developing the game?
The bottom line is… it’s all about where they put the most effort… obviously they’re putting the most effort in the PC. The PS3 and 360 are secondary, but they’re probably favoring the PS3 a little more due to EA’s marketing and to get PS3 owners to buy their game instead of Call of Duty.
Battlefield is trying to do what Rock Band did to Guitar Hero… watch.
That being said… I’m still not convinced that Battlefield 3 is the holy grail of games and I’ll be buying Modern Warfare 3 on 360 (despite being more passionate about the PS3)…. because my brother and friends play on 360.

But i will have some things better on xbox 360 and some things better on ps3,just taking all the benefits that each console have.The xbox will have a better lighiting and better textures(maybe) because it has a better graphic card and the ps3 better physics because it has a better cpu(not now with the xbox slim models).

LOL, XBox 360 S has the exact same processor as the Fat ones. The difference is that now GPU and CPU are in the same pack, they are smaller and therefore they do not overheat like the old ones.
But the 360 cpu computational power is always the same.

The processor in the slims just runs on lower volts and is more reliable and gets less hot….. its exactly the same speed and power as before…. you can make a processor how fast or as powerfull as you want with its settings [its called overclockiing] a processor isnt just 1 speed you dimillo…..
the high the speed and power the more unreliable and hot the processor gets, so the console manufactures make the processor run as fast and powerfull they can but haveto be not too hot and reliable, and we all no the Xbox was never that reliable, so they made the processor more efficient for the slims so it runs at the same speed but is not as hot and more reliable.

There’s absolutely no point MS putting more powerful CPU in at this late stage of the gen. Firstly, a more powerful CPU would be useless , as devs couldn’t use it, as only few consoles would have it; thus have to code two versions of game. Secondly, they only put in new motherboards to save money , as the newer ones are a) cheaper to produce , due to changes they make to them. Making CPU more powerful would put costs up, not reduce them. Plus it would also increase the heat production , something they’ve been reducing over time, and thus would require a more powerful fan to be installed , increasing costs further.
So in conclusion . Shhhhhhhhh!!!

Whilst completely true that porting takes time and money, the issues in the bf3 port lie in the edram of 360. Theyve had to use tiling to fit image in framebuffer, lost a lot of benefits of edram that are there from staying at res of 1152 x 720p or under, and theres nothing left to push around lighting, physics etc etc, so cuts have had to be made even further than on ps3, which has been able to shift these things onto it’s spu’s freeing up gpu for other things, and overall maintain a higher image quality.
whilst ps3 and 360 are pretty much even , each has strengths and weaknesses, but each have pro’s and cons. In this case the ps3′s pros have led to a better looking game, whereas in other cases that utilise strengths of 360 like bayonetta did, with huge amounts of alpha, the ps3 cant compete(even if it wasnt a quick botched port), as it doesnt have bandwidth to cope with that amount of alpha.

No, the bottom line is, they have a better relationship with Sony, who helped them work on BC2 and their engine for ps3, which was lead format. MS is heavily in bed with Activision, so MS isnt interested in helping Dice produce this game, as they will fleece millions of cod customers this year anyway. Sony have more reason to get in bed with Dice. However, the reason ps3 version is better is technical reasons, not political ones. No amount of time or effort optimising engine further, is going to remove the obstacle of the edram and having to tile image, and thuus hinder performance slightly by eating up rocessing power, and give the 360 extra processing power to deal with lighting and pyhsics etc., which it cant deal with, as its already busy elsewhere.

great, who said it’s the holy grail, you either prefer the gameplay of bf3 or COD. no amount of flash graphics will change that. I could be playing La Noire with real life quality visuals, and it would have still bored me to death.
My point was…
Each console has their strengths and weaknesses, so you can’t just say the PS3 is better. They’re both very old machines and have nowhere near the processing power of a modern PC.
That’s why it makes me laugh when people are like “Yet another win for the 360 because it’s so superior to the PS3 and has better online”
By the way… what the hell is “better online”? I never understood that. I have both consoles and they both run from the same internet connection and I’ve never noticed one to have better online than the other.
If developers try, they can make both games on both consoles look exactly the same. We’ve seen it before.
I totally agree they can make games look exactly the game, but like you say each console has pro’s and cons, so if a dev has a image of a game in their mind eg bf3 using various lighting effects, open environments with physics, or bayonetta with huge amounts of alpha transparencies . Then issues arise. 360 can’t match ps3 in bf3 as discussed , and they can’t make the 360 one match ps3 one by trying harder, or spending more time on it, it’s physically impossible due to 360′s limitations.
Similarly ps3 can’t do all that alpha transparencies in bayonetta , even if they spent 4 years optimizing it, they still would have to make alpha low res, or framerate would dive horribly. Although everything else would be very similar.
Game that look the same tend to be developed in a manner that avoids weaknesses of both and caters to the middleground strength wise, so that other doesn’t suffer.
Better online? Seems to basically mean x game party chat, and tbh Xbl seems to have a better selection of games, but beyond that, I’ve never noticed differences either. Maybe you could talk about updates being painful on ps3 for both hardest and software,, but beyond that , can’t notice differences at all. Games play same online, demos download quicker for me on ps3, but same basically.

I guess it is plausible that EA is marketing to the Activision neglected PS3 users, but aren’t trying to completely alienate the 360 owners either and are only doing 1 week, possibly testing the waters.
They’d be suicidal to alienate 360 owners as Bc2 sold way more on 360 and this will do same tbh.
Every multiplat fps released sells more on 360, as it’s the predominant game of choice in USA , where 360 leads in terms of numbers. Japanese and eastern asians dont platform fps much and this is Sonys biggest user base.

2. Great to see that Sony realized that 360 owns COD and is responding, even though it’s only 1 week, may be a sign of more things to come in terms of Sony and BF.
3. Can anyone tell me why in the Head2Heads the 360 screens always look darker and richer then the PS3 screens, even though it’s always the opposite for my XB and PS and apparently PS3 is meant to be darker? (some comment I read somewhere idk)
4. Its a pity for PC to get caught in the crossfires of the XB vs. PS war and sucks that they don’t really have a giant company to fight for them like Sony or MS.
5. I own both consoles but I do prefer my PS3 because I grew up mainly playing final fantasy games and Onimusha games on my PS1 and PS2, although I do prefer the XB360 and XBL Interface over the PS3 and PSN’s, Bright colors etc, big square panels etc lol.
Reason ps3 pics are so light on lot shots, is because they don’t alter gamma settings on tv, they just use the settings they have and compare both based on that. Ps3′s default gamma settings are industry standard settings , but these look light unless you calibrate your tv.
360′s default setting is non industry standard and is overly high , as ms believe that on display in stores etc , this setting is much more appealing to customers.
Devs sometime match them up so both appear to have same gamma settings, but this is rare, for some unknown reason.

I have said this many times, I have all platforms including PC, and I have an opinion that is my opinion just like you have yours. I have always said both consoles are equal because they are [in their own ways, ultimatly the PS3 can produce a technically better game with its exclusive but other than that they are both better at different things an equal], but I prefer the PS3 becuase it has many exclusive some of which are my fav games, then I have a PC which I play Multiplats on 10x better than consoles, then I have the Xbox which has hardly any use for me untill I finish Gears because its got hardly any exclusive the last 2 years..

How are they equal Strutten?, have you ever read a tech analysis of a game on Digital foundry? If you had you would know that they arent equal at all, both have own strengths and weaknesses, so your comment is redundant. One has huge bandwidth available for alpha transparencies, other has very limited bandwidth available, but has huge amounts of processing power allowing for superior lighting and physics if utilised correctly. Very similar in capabilities, but very different entities ultimately.
Like I said, use your intelligence. Dice themselves stated lighting is better on ps3, so whats problem . Furthermore game is released on 28th oct, games normally go gold a month before release, to give ample time to distribute around world etc etc. So it’s unlikely much will change, and as we all know ps3-360 ports are relatively easy and quick to do.
Then you have the facts from the presentation, stating the game has been tiled, and its obvious this will have an impact on other aspects of game.
If you are unable to piece together these things to figure out whats what, well, then that’s your problem, not mine.
Ive defended 360 version all along, saying there would only be minor differences, but dice have themselves said, it would be superior on ps3 early on, and so it appears to be. Not hugely different, but different.

I personally don’t care which version is best, as I’m able to buy either, but all sources indicate ps3.

Dude you are clearly not qualified to discuss this subject. There’s been lots of articles and statements on this subject, which u clearly don’t know about.
I’m not being a fanboy on this matter.
Dice’s bf3 on consoles stated that 360 is using tiling, which is not a game ruining situation , but it’s a disadvantage no doubt, which is why games like halo, crysis 2 etc avoid doing so, and stay sub 1152x720p. This is as above that res tiling has to be used, and they lose many benefits of edram at this point. It’s also more CPU intensive , meaning performance is more strained. Unlike ps3 where lighting and physics is shifted onto spu’s whilst gpu does other activities, the 360 doesn’t have this option . In this particular case, the 360 is at disadvantage to ps3, but this doesn’t mean it’s disadvantaged in all cases, that’s not my point.
Dice have also stated that the lighting would be better on ps3, and there was quotes on this from devs.
On top of this ps3 version uses mlaa whilst dice were trying various forms of gpu based aa alternatives like fxaa , as they can’t use mlaa on 360, and even if they implement fxaa, it’s inferior to mlaa( only slightly tbh, but definitely inferior)
I don’t expect huge differences between two, but they will be there, and ps3 holds the advantage .
The info is out there if you actually are interested , and I could go into lot more detail , but it’s not a fanboy perspective I’m using here. It’s a factual based perspective. I own both consoles( see my post on the latest head2head, where i proved this to truhurts), so no loss to me which is better , but this genuinely seems to be a ps3 win in the making.
The comment I made about ps3 and 360 being similar and ultimately two different entities went over your head too it seems. The two are similar in capabilities, but also have different strengths and weaknesses( 360 has bandwidth advantage and can this do full res alpha textures ie smoke , fire, water in abundance, whilst ps3 can’t . See bioshock where water is less than half res in ps3, and uc3 and kz3 have used alternative particle based effects instead, Which incidentally plays to one of ps3′s strengths ie physics. The ps3 strengths lie in physics, lighting etc which are CPU based, and this is one reason bf3 is better on ps3, there’s huge amounts of physics being calculated in the environmental destruction , lighting requires physics too, then theres larger open environments and you have the edram issue )
So depending on what the devs vision of game is, the ps3 or 360 may end up victorious . Bayonetta can’t be mimicked on ps3 cause of huge amounts of alpha , but then 360 can’t mimic uc2 for example, at least not like for like.
so if mw3 comes out with ps MOVE support then the game will not come out for xbox360?
