If you think Sony’s PlayStation Vita had a rough launch think again.
According to latest sales figures released by Sony, the PlayStation Vita has sold more than 1.2 million units worldwide since its launch in Asia on December 17th. Below are a few quotes from president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., Andrew House.
“PS Vita was designed to deliver the ultimate portable entertainment experience, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the reaction we’re seeing from consumers and the pace at which PS Vita is selling,” said House “The market has responded and there is clear demand for a mobile device capable of providing a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real-world context. To sustain momentum, we’re working closely with third-party developers and publishers to ensure the best games and franchises possible will be available on PS Vita, and our software line up for the remainder of 2012 will have something for everyone across the globe”

Great news. Hopefully the device continues to sell well in the west. Already purchased mine, and it is awesome. It’s very clear that Sony put a lot of time and effort into it. Currently playing Uncharted: GA, and it is nothing short of a full fledged Uncharted title. Hopefully Sony continues to put AAA titles on the system, in which case it’ll probably eventually surpass the 3DS. That would be awesome.
The only real downside to the device is that it’s connectivity with the PS3 sucks at the moment, but that can be easily fixed by a few firmware updates.
surpass the 3DS? probably not. considering that the worldwide total sales of the 3DS are nearing the 20 million mark for one year, 1.2 million units for the first 3 months is not what would be called successful, let alone a 3DS killer.
most of the problem is probably how Sony is jabbing US customers with additional forced purchases (no psp discounts or transfers, proprietary micro sd cards at prices that make the xbox 360 blush with no internal memory (I’m sorry but $99.99 for a 32 GB micro sd card is insane, you could get something similar with out the sony proprietary connector for less than 40 bucks on amazon this very second!), and the fact that a lot of the games currently up for download are ports of iOS games that have been stuck with a far higher price tag with minimal changes, not to mention you can’t actually use the 3G to play online which makes the 3G almost pointless) I don’t think anyone on a budget is able to afford paying 250 for the base unit, then another 25 dollars for a special memory stick (at least the 3DS came with a 2GB stick that didn’t have any proprietary junk on it), then another 50 bucks for a game for a handheld. it just isn’t reasonable. (also the vita is region locked as well so that’s also a heavy turn off for a lot of psp users since a lot of the best psp games usually come out first in japan)
“also the vita is region locked as well”
Uhhh??
thanks burito, for covering a point of view that’s been in 100+ articles already… poorly.
Im sure it will continue to climb throughout the year, as more games come out for it and its online features grow. I foresee some good sales around Christmas this year.
i love shooters… though i’ve never played COD. i duno why, just never have. anyways, a COD/PsVita package is will sell at least another half a million… i’m 28… i dont have that much time to play video games otherwise id own one already but i feel like it’s a perfect way to appeal to the younger generation… (most of whom,i feel own xboxs… not dissing xbox…)
“and the fact that a lot of the games currently up for download are ports of iOS games that have been stuck with a far higher price tag with minimal changes….also the vita is region locked as well so that’s also a heavy turn off for a lot of psp users since a lot of the best psp games usually come out first in japan”
1) a lot of the games are ios ports? ok… if 2-3 out of 20+ launch games is a big amount then you are right
…
2) basically,the 3ds IS region locked,the psvita is not…
Good for Sony, I hope this device continues to sell.
I’m glad to be among the 1.2 millions
I can’t wait for burning skies!
@BIGBURITO You are the biggest idiot ever. At least get your facts right. Only thing I agree about is the memory price but other than that, everything you said is just straight out of your 3DS ass.
Lol what ? actually most of it is true tho.. it is just that expensive pretty sick for a handheld imo .. still an awesome one thats for sure, im sure it will continue to grow as more games comes out etc.. but you cant deny that it isnt expensive. so talkin like an douche isnt going to make you “cool”..
OT: Thumbs up for sony nice handheld no doubt !
Almost everything he said was false. What else is true except that the vita is expensive for most people?
You can play 3G online but is depends on your plan. But yea it still kind sucks.
Region lock? lol, Obviously been living under a rock.
iOS Ports? only about 3-4 out of 30+ games…
Expensive games? Most games are at the 30-40 range and some under 20, only 2 games I have seen with 50 price tag are Golden abyss and UMVC3, the biggest Vita games right now. 3DS games are at the same price at around 30-40.
since the n64, i’ve gotten every system at launch. psp vita is first time i did not.
Really?
You got the Tapwave Zodiac, Nokia N-Gage, Mattel Hyperscan and Tiger Gizmondo all at launch and skipped out on the PS Vita?
Very interesting…
