As huge Neo-Geo fans, we were very excited when we reported this back in January as a rumor, and now that its official our Retro DNA is in over drive. Check out the official features and list of games.
Yahoo Games confirms ”One of the priciest consoles in video game history is getting a reboot…and it’s still kinda pricy. Releasing December 6, the Neo Geo X Gold Entertainment System is a handheld that plays classic Neo Geo arcade games. In addition to the handheld itself (which boasts a 4.3-inch LCD screen), it comes packaged with a standard-sized joystick controller, a dock that connects the handheld to your TV, and 20 pre-loaded Neo Geo games.
And it can be yours for only $200. Wait, really? Doesn’t that seem a little steep for a system that only plays games that are roughly two decades old? Maybe when you compare it to a new Nintendo 3DS (retail price: $170), but not when you compare it to the original Neo Geo home console.
Modeled after the successful Neo Geo coin-op cabinets, the home version essentially reproduced the arcade game experience in your living room. That was quite a cool trick at the time, made even cooler by the Neo Geo’s wealth of top-flight 2D fighting game franchises like Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown, and The King of Fighters.
But while the Neo Geo home console boasted burlier graphics than what you might find on competing systems like the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis, it boasted a burlier price tag, too: a stomach-churning $650 at launch. In 1991. I’m no good at math, but I believe that’s the equivalent of, like, $25,000 today.
The result? No one could afford it. Gamers flocked to the SNES and Genesis, and by the time Neo Geo prices started dropping, it was too late. By 1995, Sony and Sega were releasing new consoles capable of churning out cutting-edge 3D graphics, dooming the Neo Geo to niche gaming history.
At any rate, the Neo Geo Gold X is a legit release (it’s being made by Tommo in conjunction with SNK Playmore, the original Neo Geo creators) and packs a pretty nice assortment of games:”
- 3 Count Bout
- Art of Fighting II
- Alpha Mission II
- Baseball Stars II
- Cyber Lips
- Fatal Fury
- Fatal Fury Special
- The King of Fighters ’95
- King of the Monsters
- Last Resort
- League Bowling
- Magician Lord
- Metal Slug
- Mutation Nation
- Nam 1975
- Puzzled
- Real Bout – Fatal Fury Special
- Samurai Shodown II
- Super Sidekicks
- World Heroes Perfect
That sounds awesome, and now that this is official you can grantee we’re cracking open our storage “UNIT” to bring you more Neo-Geo classics. Check out our Magician Lord Retro Review!

“UNIT” In all honesty I’m more excited about that then the Wii U!
why, the Wii U will have all these games on it eventually. and then the Wii U2.. like joshua tree edition..
its a neogeo fans dream possibly, i would love this 13 years ago when neogeo pocket color came out.
and i love my NGPC but like a parent loves a special needs child
Thanks… but NO!
I have all of those game in my Laptop, my xbox 360 JTAG, and in my Iphone.
THANKS!!
An overly expensive launch price is also what caused the PS3 so many issues. Even I waited until the price drop.
$600 for the latest gen console, with PS2 b/c and the best Blu Ray player at the time was not really “overly expensive”. Sony was even selling it under priced. The real cost was $900. But it made sony winning the HD optical format, so it has been a good investment for them.
The real problem of the PS3 at the beginning is that it had no games. I ended up playing PS2 games for months. I bought the PS3 because my PS2 died.
Anyway, back on topic: who’s going to waste money on that Neo Geo junk? With few coins more one gets a PS Vita.
Blurry graphics, mono sound, and price is why i chose neogeo arcade over home console, plus theres more arcade titles than home port, which this thing probably wont match, I’ll probably guess it wont even have 1 complete franchise on it.
oh, and crappy emulated ports to current and last gen systems.. i never understood why newer systems after neogeo couldnt run neogeo games perfectly like capcom could.. another reason i went with neo arcade lol
The NeoGeo is the BEST console EVER made. –John Carmack
This would be great and all but the price is ridiculous and it is made by the same company (Blaze) that made the Genesis handhelds with poorly made hardware. If the emulation and build quality is great, then this would at least be pretty decent with the original style Neo Geo Stick and docking station combined.
Still, this really doesn’t offer all that much compared to open source and hacked portables. People are already playing “teh romz”. I am glad I still have my Neo Geo AES home system modded (component video, Unibios, stereo, LED reset button) with the main fighters and action games I like and collected since 1999. Everything else like Metal Slug 1 and 2, Pulstar, Last Resort, Sengouku 2, etc… I just play on my region modded Neo Geo CDZ I got in 2001.
I wish people would stop misreporting this. The Neo Geo X portable system is 129.99.
The Neo Geo X GOLD (which is the system, a dock that allows you to play the games on a TV and an old school Neo Geo Controller) is actually what costs 199.99.
