This has been a bad month for old school franchises and reviews. First we had Silent Hill Downpour not living up to expectations, receiving many average scores from gaming publications around the Internet.  Damn.

Next up on the list of disappointments is Ninja Gaiden 3, which IGN awarded a 3 / 10 saying the game’s combat has turned it into a Dynasty Warriors clone (many other reviews seem to agree). That one really hurts.

Finally, it’s Resident Evil’s turn. RE: Operation¬† Raccoon City was released yesterday, and if you haven’t heard it’s getting some pretty terrible review scores as well. Have a look below to see what a few sites are saying.

IGN – “The terrible AI, the lackluster locations and the complete lack of atmosphere or memorable characters destroy what could have been a brilliant offshoot. In the end, Operation Raccoon City is little more than a poor man’s SOCOM, and a destitute man’s Resident Evil.” 4 / 10

Games Radar – “Not only does Raccoon City not deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Valve’s zombie-killing masterpiece [Left 4 Dead], a number of poor design choices, narrative missteps, and technical issues combine to make this one of the worst Resident Evil games to date.” 3 / 10

Joystiq – “Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is everything I hoped it wouldn’t be: a mediocre shooter hoping to be bolstered by the Resident Evil name. It takes what is arguably the series’ best setting and wastes it, forcing players to plod through generic underground facilities and the occasional, oddly vacant street from one boring encounter to the next.” 4 / 10

We’re the first to tell you not to judge a game based on a review, but its the whole majority thing here that’s pretty unsettling. Good thing we’ll always have our old school classics to fall back on.
