A statement made during a conference call to investors by Sony’s executive vice president and chief financial officer Masaru Kato has some people asking this very question…
Today during a conference call to investors , Masaru Kato made this revelation;
“For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life,” he said, “but this is a platform business, so for the future platform – when we’ll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that – but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there.”
Kaz Hirai, just a few months ago, has gone on record saying “a near-future PS4 or next-generation home console is not something that we are even debating now“.
What do you think? Is it to early, too late, or just the right time to begin development on the PlayStation 4? Let us know below.

I think in 2013 we will see the next generation home console, and i hope it don’t cost 599$ !!!
I think it is, and Nintendo’s announcement of Wii 2, will get both Microsoft and Sony thinking about future consoles sooner then they may have liked.
That is what im waiting for…
With Nintendo’s Project Cafe on the way Sony and Microsoft have no choice to start looking at the next generation hardware. Fall 2013 is my guess.
I want this console gen to last a wee bit longer
If the Wii’s new hardware is noticeably more powerful than current gen, Sony and MS will see a steep drop in sales, hardware and software.
As soon as one company makes a move all the rest will follow or else they will fall.
Finally the development of the games will see some improvement moving forward into new hardware awesomeness, as of lately it’s been quite stagnant.
of course the new playstation is in development, as is the new xbox and wii. Nintendo have always said that they are constantly looking at their next step and piece of hardware, thats how these guys work, but this doesnt mean its at a stage where everything is finalised specs wise etc.
It’s time to move on, These systems are all used up and nothing has blown me away since they were released. I think a $600 price point is not all that unreasonable considering the new video cards by Nvidia and ATI are $600 and $700 alone.
No $600 is for a dual gpu. A highend gpu costs ~$300 (GTX 570 or AMD 6970) not $600-$700. People really tend to make gpu’s seem expensive
they aren’t that much
you could get a 5770 or a gtx 460 for ~ 100-150 which is pretty good for a gpu that destorys consoles in terms of graphics in full hd
I didn’t say $700 was expensive, I was saying that’s the cost for the latest graphics card at the moment. I think that next gen systems may last with a GTX 580 but even that card is $400-$500 depending on how you shop. Still, I would pay up to a grand for a next gen system if i had to lol.
Wanna bet? The bet single video card on the market as o now is the ATI HD6990 it is $700. It had dual onboard gpu’s but it is still a single card and it has 4gb of DDR5 memory so an SLI setupfor it would cost $1400
The GTX 590 is the best card on the market right now. This has already been proven. The 6990 also sounds like an airplane taking off lol.
SLI is for nvidia. ATI/AMD has Crossfire/CrossfireX. By the way, ATI no longer exists, it’s only AMD now
Ahh yes good catch on the sli part, im atwork so i tend to not think when i post stuff on websites lol. I mean crossfire
Also according to anandtech and other computer hardware sites the hd 6990 has a slight lead over the gtx590
Only the very highest end dual GPU cards cost $600+. A very powerful single GPU card can be bought for $300.
I hope they reuse the cell but with 32-64 spu’s
The cell is extreamly scalable so they will have no problems with that. Plus a cell with 32-64 spu’s can easily do raytracing without the gpu. With a gpu, lol.
A new iteration of the cell would be nice in the heart of the next PS4. And maybe we’ll have backwards compatibility?
I think 2013 E3 they’ll announce the next gen consoles.
I certainly hope it’s not priced at what a 13 year old get’s for allowance. I’m hoping somewhere around $900, the more the better, I just want it to be the best it can.
………..wut?
Didn’t the PS3 originally retail for $599, and yet people lined up like crack head’s on welfair day. Of course they can charge an extra $100 to $200 dollars.
@Dale
Man you make no sense. The whole point of home consoles is quality and convenient performance at a reasonable price. If you really want to spend $900 on one just to have the best possible machine, just invest in a gaming PC. Why price something that will always be infirior the same price as something that will be the best no matter what?
My comment was rather extreme but it was to make a point, and that is I don’t want no tinker toy, I want a quality machine that will last for years.
so what? $799 $699
Plus it will set the bar higher for game developers, as it is right now, it is way too low.
The best possible gaming PC from 6 years ago was minimum $2k; right now, you get the same performance for $500 or less. Not a smart investment.
Just like PLATIBUS says console’s are always a better investment, I agree with that %100
That’s not what I meant. I was talking about PC’s only, nothing about consoles. For me, PC is always the best investment, but only within a price range. When it comes to gaming with a PC equipped with $1k worth of hardware , you can play all the current games with great quality, some even maxed out, at much higher framerates and resolution than a console can handle. Disregard the limitless customization possibilities that a PC offers, and the much wider availability of games, from this and past generations. It has been that way for a long time. I’d say that anything above or around $500 for a gaming console, as we know them today, is a bad investment. Those $500, plus accesories, price difference in games, and other console requirements puts their price equal to a gaming PC, without the countless benefits you get from the latter. That is my opinion, feel free to share yours.
My body is ready
I’m at a happy medium on this. I feel this generation has finally peaked out, but there is still much enjoyment to gain from both consoles. At the same time however, they are tapped now and late 2013 or early 2014 seems like the perfect time to bring on the next gen.
but is your body ready
lmao, I love how every time they speculate that a new console is in development, all these ridiculous fake pictures of it, looking insanely futuristic and over the top, begin to surface online. Oh, interweb, I love you. You entertain me <3
I’d love to see the integration of Stream Processors into the Playstation’s Graphics Card. With how well Optimization is getting, I’d love to see what developers could do with said technology because the main leap in hardware technology between DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 based cards is the integration of multiple Stream Processing units which can be assigned with different tasks within the engine. Combine that with an upgraded cell, or possibly a quad core or hexicored processor, and you have a seriously powerful console, not unlike project cafe.
@ DMANK1LLA
“I hope they reuse the cell but with 32-64 spu’s The cell is extreamly scalable so they will have no problems with that. Plus a cell with 32-64 spu’s can easily do raytracing without the gpu. With a gpu, lol.”
hahahaha this guy right ^^
You serious, poor programmers. Do you honestly think that they are going to make a system with 64 SPU’s when programmers are still having problems making games with 7. No dude, just no! It would be a near impossible task for at least the few years to make games even look good using 64 SPU’s. Whats wrong with just having a 4GHz i7 and a custom made GPU chip?? Why complicate things??
You know there are raytracing programs that run on multiple cells. Remember the demo using 3 ps3′s? thats only 18 spu running. With 64 raytracing is a definite while with a good gpu and ok processor not so much. And I read an article on their scalability and it’s really easy to scale the spu’s. http://www.signallake.com/innovation/nanda.pdf
this is one of them. Google cell processor scalablity
The guy who made this fan art.. What was he thinking..?
A piece of glass with a portal leading to the Nethers?
GENIUS!!
On topic, I hope Sony tweaks the DualShock design a bit..
Ages ago It did win an award for controller design but
I feel like the controller needs to be abit larger..
With more comfortable triggers.. and a more resistent analog stick.
The Dualshock 3 is a great controller, dont get me wrong.
But its 2011 and theres always room for improvement.
they can make it bigger for all i care, the controller is perfect for any hand formations. hell, using the d-pad with my index while my middle taps at L1 and my thumb moving my character, great way to maneuver in Demon’s Souls.
Damn, I hope we get at least 4GB of RAM in these consoles and I hope they are powerful enough to have native 1080p graphics at 60 FPS. I can dream right!!!
I really doubt that would be a problem with future consoles, with the right optimization current so-so hardware cand do that. Imagine what a couple years from now will bring us.
When The PS3 and 360 debuts, the hardware was foreign and actually ahead of what the PC market had, at that time not many people even had multiple core CPU’s. Now with new consoles on the horizon let us compare the current market from then to now.
does the progress of hardware and software’s development coincide?
Will we see the same advancement in technology as last gen? I don’t think it will be as revolutionary, I actually believe they will opt to use 2-3 year old hardware. And With that they probably won’t even touch the lead the growing PC market has.
i think its now or next year time for releasing a ps4 and xbox 720 because the games already moving to a next generation the engines have changed and they need more space for discs
Nah, only on 360, PS3 discs still offer enough space
The PS4 has been in “development” since December 2006
PLATIBUS your killing all my fun, I guess my opinion is I can’t wait until game development starts to move forward again, naturally that will speed up when new consoles arrive, thus higher quality PC games and the reason why I don’t want cheaply made consoles
I already own my next gen console it’s called a PC.
Im sure in the next gen many ps3 fanboys will move to the next xbox. The average winner of this gen.
I’m really upset because i just got my ps3 for Christmas, now i will have to buy another console, its too expensive, i wish they can cancel the new consoles, I’m not the only one, some say that they want them to cancel.
i dont want the wii, ps3, and the x360 to get discontinued.
the new consoles might fail anyway.
i’m planning to make a video game so i’m not going to make it to be on the new consoles, the ps4, and the x750
i’m going to make it on the ps3, and the x360, wii, maybe the wii u
i’m really upset about the new consoles
