Welcome back for another exciting Heads Up! First of all, Happy Thanksgiving to all of our fans and their families. Lately The Internet has been filled with speculation on the speed and power of Nintendo’s Wii U CPU. And without Nintendo releasing the official CPU stats most of the speculation out there is “he said she said”. Honestly, all that really matters is how does the Wii U perform when playing these games. Well we have that answer of course, and the outcome is actually satisfying.
So come join us as we “Plow” our way through Call of Duty: Black Ops II on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U to give you the “Heads Up” on which version out performs the other. Just remember, a Heads Up doesn’t have a winner or a loser – they’re designed to give our members a “Heads Up” on which version performs better on games that might have slipped through the cracks. In short, our members are the judge and jury on which version is the best. Heads Up winners and losers can be found on our Head2Head Index page. Check out the analysis below and enjoy.
Below are the videos and the frame analysis stats.
PlayStation 3 vs. Xbox 360 Analysis Video Above.

Conclusion: As you can see in the Analysis videos the Wii U holds its own in terms of performance. Although, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions have an overall slight advantage with frame rate, the Wii U has absolutely Zero screen tearing and a respective frame rate. Lastly, With all the speculation out there about the overall power of the Wii U, we’re actually really impressed with the Wii U thus far. Considering that developers have had over seven years to grasp the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 hardware we were expecting a lot worse outcome.
*To ensure color accuracy from the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U output, the PlayStation 3 has RGB Full Range set to "Full" and Super White "On", and the Xbox 360 has Reference Level set to "Expanded" and HDMI Color Space set to "RGB". Our capture card we have captured segments from the AVS HD 709 . Blu-ray, HD DVD, & MP4 Calibration suite.
As you will see, each system matches each other at the SOURCE LEVEL. No contrast or gamma settings are manipulated before or after capturing our images/videos. We strongly believe that these types of corrections are done on a individuals preference and should not be adjusted by us. Finally, washed out looking images that are due to contrast or gamma differences will not have any influence on our final verdicts. Please Read through our F.A.Q page if you have any questions or concerns.*

this shows which version is still most preferable…
also after 6-7 years into this gen i dont think we should worry about which version we are playing…
I am saddend.
Only a true benchmark can say how is the power of Wii U’s CPU, not the comparison of one the ugliest game of this generation, a game that after 6 years couldn’t achieve a 60 fps on PS3 !! OH wait ! do u wanna say that the reason PS3 can’t get 60 fps like a Xbox version, is because PS3 has a weaker CPU compare to xbox ??! nah i don think is the CPU, neither in PS3 nor in Wii U … The problem is the developers that focus their investment and optimizations on xbox, then port the damn game to other consoles, that’s other platforms don’t get the good performance on xbox. simple as that ….
Spot on bro, very well said.
People will say you sound like a BUTTHURT fanboy, but that is not true. You’re a loyal PS3 fan and you deserve 60 fps on the future proof bluray player. Plus we have the superior DPAD. I wish we had 3 DPADS because it’s so superior.
Your argument is solid except for 2 things. The facts that on PC it runs at 60 fps (if its optimized for X, it would play better on X for example) and the fact is simply that this game is running on an engine from 1998. the fact that ps3/360 have framerate drops is horrid, but the fact that the ‘next gen’ cant even keep up with this current gen is just downright sad, even more so if you include the quake 3 engine.
Yes, I know. “Wii U is new and different architecture”. Yes, its semi new, but its also based off the wii architecture and also has 4x the ram (1 gig! whoo, its like its 2002 again!) than the other systems and a 6 year older card. this is unacceptable.
you got to know that Nintendo didnt even bother to give any accurate specs to the public or developers. Most of the game developers are required to “guess” its performance on launch day.
Wow, how could people have picked the Wii version as second place on a framerate analysis, when the numbers are right there to tell you its running higher frames on the PS3? freaking fanboyism! Even when the proof is there, people deny it. Humans beings are unbelievable!
What does need to be done is to tell Treyach to get ride of the blur
Because frame rate difference is almost negligible but Wii U has ZERO torn frames, plus texture resolution is superior on Wii U.
What is being measured here is frame rate and tearing ONLY, not texture resolution. Vote accordingly.
I like to subtract torn frames from total frames to get an idea how many good frames a system can produce. If I subtract the torn frames from the global average fps we get: PS3 50.09, Xbox 55,73 and Wii U 48,39. This puts the xbox on top, ps3 second and Wii U last in regards to untorn frames per second. Some people hate tearing and others not so I think this is a good way to get an unbiased view by not taking torn frames into account.
i think because wii u have no tearing on the image.
imho it’s a good compromise of performance. Little bit low Fps but mor stable image.
The Wii U version was using vsync. By using my PC as a reference, I’d say that with vsync disabled (like on the 360), the Wii U would be pushing 80fps. Maybe higher.
indeed, with v-sync off the WiiU would be soaring overhead, it’s nice to see the port went fairly smoothly.
I think you guys are forgetting that in the Wii U the game is running in Full HD, 1080p. No, not upscaled X360 crap, the native one. That makes a huge difference in terms of performances.
Then let’s be serious. Nintendo’s consoles are 1/2 generation behind. When the new Sony and MS consoles will be out the Wii U will be good just to play Mario Bros and the old Wii games. But if these are the results that could still take a long time. There is too much to milk out from the current consoles.
@Michelasso
people said that about the 360 when compared to the PS3 at launch but it’s still current. also you have to take into account the price point at the moment, people don’t want to spend $500 on a console so logically microsoft and Sony are going to have to try and get into that range as well, which means the actual difference of capabilities between consoles is going to end up the same way the 360/ps3 are now with very minimal differences that barely effect the game.
@Michelasso
I’m having a very hard time trying to comprehend how 880×720 is equivalent to 1080p.
Source:
It’s pretty dissapointing to see how the Wii U can’t surpass a 6 years old HW, quite a shame Nintendo, i guess the rumors were true, watching the Frame rate fall to almost 30fps, not cool. If i have to say, Nintendo spent all of the budget on the controller and the rest, they chose the simplier HW just to try to match current gen.
I’d like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. I just want to give thanks to the Xbox 360 for being the most awesome console ever created and for being truly one of mankind’s most treasured technological achievements. The Xbox 360 is one of those creations that comes around only once in a lifetime and you should all be honored that you’re alive to see it in it’s full glory. Centuries from now, when our bones are nothing but dust, the Xbox 360 will still be revered and remembered as the console that ushered in a new era of gaming. As I look at my Xbox 360 I feel a rush of great joy coursing through my very soul, it envelops me in it’s magical aura and cleanses my spirit. Unlike the PS3, which leaves me feeling empty and soulless, like so many of you lifeless husks that pollute this site. I pity you all.
Anyway…HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
LOL what’s this? You can’t possibly be more disappointed than I am with the PS3 since launch. I think the system is a POS and is gimped for multiplats 90% of the time as evidenced here, Digital foundry, youtube, and all over the web. Sony is so far gone I don’t ever think they will be a market leader again.
And rest asssurd, Sony would have to be as stupid as sin if they don’t start charging for PSN next generation. Right now their gimped service is still shit and not worth a fuc*$ng penney though. And as long as they keep that archaic Controller design (which absolutely sucks for first person shooters) I will not be buying their next console.
Anyhow enough of my rant for today. I’m happy enough knowing that any gamer worth his salt knows not to buy multiplats with very few exceptions.

Okay LOT, what the f*ck is the deal here…?
Your website is the only one in my bookmarks that sometimes requires me to “update” my Chrome browser. Yet this exe that -automatically- downloads alerts Chrome as a malicious application. Chrome’s own browser update alerting itself? Yeah uh okay…
Sort this sh*t out. Not going to come back if this site is infected with malware.
Wii U looks like it has more detail and better color. What resolution is the Wii U running?
Is it 60 frames per sec online?
Wow. The Wii U has vsync. I read somewhere that the 360 version of Black Ops’ frame rate would drop to around 30fps with vsync turned on. Which is why they chose to turn it off. It’s amazing that the Wii U can run vsync and the 360 can’t.
So if thats true^ the best looking game this gen on consoles is UNCHARTED 2 and 3 which are triple buffered and v-synced.
So PS3 is even more powerful then if they switched v-sync off we would not only have the best looking game by far but it could also hit 60fps!!!
God of War is any equally gorgeous game with no v-sync and that runs between 35- 60fps so it kind of proves it!
Bothgames run native 720p too.
So all these head 2 heads like this COD BO2 can’t do 720p @ 60 on an aging engine?
Just shows devs don’t even try, they build for the easiest and lowest common denominator, the 360 and just give lazy ports to PS3!
they give lazy ports to PS3 because PS3 doesn’t get nearly the sales the xbox version does.
ASHDUDE
Turning off v-sync doesn’t = 60fps. There’s a lot more too it then that. Sometimes a developer will pick v-sync over soft v-sync because there’s too much screen tear that they would rather the frame rate suffer but keep out the horrific screen tear.
DMC4 is virtually v-synced on 360 and runs @ a rock solid 30fps. On PS3 is seems to be turned off and yet it’s still a bit less than 30fps but with 45% screen tear. Obviously there’s reason behind such crap performance (shit port, unsuitable game engine etc) but my point stands.
@Badassbab
I think you got Devil May Cry 4 and DmC: Devil May Cry mixed up. Aside from cutscenes, Devil May Cry 4 runs at a smooth 60fps on both versions (with some slight tearing on the Xbox 360 version.)
Hmm. Digital Foundry seem to disagree – a lot – with LoTs findings. Wii U drops down to very low 30′s and even in the 20′s at places – especially on some of the more demanding maps.
@Michelasso
Again, according to DF, all the versions run at 880×720. No difference there. In fact, considering the 7 year gap betweem consoles, rather disappointing imo.
DF downplayed vsync way too much. The vsync option always takes a big hit on my PC games. My frame rate in Starcraft 2 drops from 50fps down to 30fps because of vsync.
they announced during a nintendo conference that black ops II on WiiU runs in 1080P
I have to agree with aria 68″well said mate,Anyway’these call of duty games shouldnt be put into a head to head as we all know that microsoft puts it’s hands into its pockets to get the best looking and playable version”the Wii u console is buy far more powerful than the 360 and ps3″just give it some time and dont reliy on every port but more like the way the ps3 has gone buy blowing away the 360 with its mighty exclusives,This is the way Nintendo are going to go im sure’and rightly so.
360 wins again
Actualy Wii U version runs on the same 880×720 resolution of the 360, and its the only title on the Wii U that spot Antialiasing, I dont think this game do justice of the Nintendo new hardware but its pretty disapointing that Wii U can’t manage to get at least an advantage on frame-rate. I’m curious to see the Assassins Creed 3 and Batman AC comparison aswell.
360 wins again, now against a next gen console! Go go 360
“Next gen”
Yeah okay.
The Wii U needs a good exclusive game that takes advantage of it’s hardware. I’m hearing too much negativity towards it because of these low quality ports. I’m afraid as time goes on though and developers start to take advantage of the Wii U’s hardware that Sony and Microsoft are going to release there next generation console and once again the Wii will be far behind the competition..
@CHADWARDEN
Your are a Suck Sony Fanboy,stop it,a superior Dpad,sit down in your Dpad,and after all shut you mouth…..
MY pc with quad core 5ghz cpu and 2 gtx 680′s laughs at this
