Come join us as we “flamethrower” our way through Aliens: Colonial Marines on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 to give you the “Heads Up” on which version out performs the other. Just remember, a Heads Up doesn’t have a winner or a loser – they’re designed to give our members a “Heads Up” on which version performs better on games that might have slipped through the cracks. In short, our members are the judge and jury on which version is the best. Heads Up winners and losers can be found on our Head2Head Index page. Check out the analysis below and enjoy.

*To ensure color accuracy from the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U output, the PlayStation 3 has RGB Full Range set to "Full" and Super White "On", and the Xbox 360 has Reference Level set to "Expanded" and HDMI Color Space set to "RGB". Our capture card we have captured segments from the AVS HD 709 . Blu-ray, HD DVD, & MP4 Calibration suite.
As you will see, each system matches each other at the SOURCE LEVEL. No contrast or gamma settings are manipulated before or after capturing our images/videos. We strongly believe that these types of corrections are done on a individuals preference and should not be adjusted by us. Finally, washed out looking images that are due to contrast or gamma differences will not have any influence on our final verdicts. Good god, this game is TERRIBLE to an extent where I don’t even care for the analysis because the graphics is truly dated. Duke Nukem is better than this.
Yep. The outcome is irrelevant. This game is total crap. really buggy, last gen graphics. Only for die-hard Alien fans due to the accuracies with the movie’s.
If you go by DF comparison:
PS3 – higher resolution (720p) but 20-30fps framerate and soft vsynch. Heavy action, flames, smoke, etc. = drop of vsynch and animation diving into low 20fps.
Better filtering but slower assets loading (pup-up) and some lights missing. Ocassionaly some better textures.
X360 – 640p unlocked framerate average about 40fps (up to 60 when looking at blank wall), no drops below 30fps, no vsynch at all.
Choose your poison:
- slightly cleaner with less tearing, but with framerate drops PS3 version
OR
- slightly blurrier with more screen tear, but more fluid and playable X360.
Spoiler: They chosen X360.
PS.
Game suxxs anyway.

They chose Xbox360? what a joke. No surprises there however. I trust this site more.
Well as long as you go through empty corridors PS3 is one to choose.
But when the shooting starts both tears the same, but X360 has more responsive controls and framerate above 30fps unlike struggling PS3 version.
And this is – last I checked – FPS game with a lot of shooting. They chosen version that plays better most of the time.
@Lens of Truth
Since you guys have already given this game a Heads Up, can I expect the analysis of the Wii U version to be added in at a later time (after the said version is released)?
Yes sir you can count on that!
@Shawn
Thank you! By the way, since the Wii U version of NFS: Most Wanted is coming out in March, perhaps this is a good time for you to go back and do a three-way comparison of the game? Given Criterion’s well-known dedication to platform-parity, I am rather curious of how the Wii U version is going to turn out.
Are you guys at LoT really making an H2H of a game that has a metascore of 46-50? What’s the point on it?
First on Digital Foundry and now here. Why this crap instead of Dead Space 3?
Well, even without a Head2Head, with Visceral Games being the developer, the game is already well expected to be parity across platforms (PC not included.) So, it might not be too exciting I suppose…
In demo I see lots of new things like bokeh depth of field, screen space reflection, some post-processing anti-aliasing (maybe FXAA) and propably slightly lower resolution (can’t tell for sure because of full HD screen). I want to know more about this game. Any tech article should be intresting.
Oh yeah, we’re back baby!! Another XBox win, the PS3 didn’t even stand a chance. PS3 can’t even get the horrible games right, what a joke of a gaming system.
What ?
@mik3
Don’t feed the troll.
All hail SCREEN TEARING!wtf 50% how is this even possible?
Screen tearing 50% + is the result of poor or no double buffer implementation
**The more you know!**
Turns out that Gearbox was so behind in development due to way too much games to make on their plate, that they got desperate and hired a development team called ‘Time Gate Studios’ to finish up the game. Instead of just adding on to the original engine, they redid most of everything and poorly at that. They also caused even more delays with their incompetence in programming. The main concern was SEGA getting on to them on the constant delays that Gearbox “scared” and didn’t want legal actions taken out on them. So, they just released it as is. Yep, they F$%^ up!!! Please don’t pay full price for this game. Make an example of this poor judgement. They need to learn hard from this mistake.
IT is what it is If you guys wan’t a taste of what next gen engines will be like get yourself a ps3 and play some uncharted god of war the last of us when it comes out.
First time I’ve voted Don’t Care, Terrible game on any platform.
I was so looking forward to this game. You have no idea.
After reading the numerous reviews I still had to give it a try. Therefore, I rented it and man I want my money and my 4 hours back.
Gearbox should be a shamed of themselves and don’t get me started and their CEO Randy The Bullshiter Putchford. The asshole went and tons a podcasts and interviews and went on about how great the game is. I hope Sega sues his ass for this piece of garbage.
F’you Gearbox for Duke and Aliens.
Whichever console wins, we lose.
What a shame:{Ive been waiting for a good version of Alians since the ps2 days,O well,Just have to wait and see if someone can make a good version on the next gen now:{uuuffffff
I don’t get it. The only difference I see is that the door on the xbox version is more background lit…Oh, and there’s a planet instead of a ship on the screens.
They should have compared the best screenshots of BOTH PS3 and Xbox to the playable demo they released a few months earlier… That would have been a H2H to remember.
I bought this game a week ago for the PS3, I’m a fan of the Alien franchise,.I really like to see the story of this game and I would say that they really F*3d this game up. But I am happy because I waste my money,.and I would like to buy the XBOX 360 version also…
