Welcome back for another exciting Head2Head! This week we clash swords with Namco Bandai’s SoulCalibur V on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Its been quite some time since we’ve put a SC under the Lens, with the last one being Soul Calibur IV back in 2009. Let’s see how the series latest entry stacks up…

another case where the 360 version is slightly darker. im sure if you adjusted the gamma (in the game options) just a modicum, they would look exactly the same.
No it is NOT another case.
In this game colours and gamma are IDENTICAL as they should be.
If only all PS3 games were done as such there would be no need for having two sets/channels in TV one for proper ports and exclusives and other for bad ports with washed out picture with special settings trying to fix crappy picture.
You do realize that the wrong gamma comes from the XBox 360 colour output, as it’s been already proved by many articles, don’t you?
The correct comment should have been:
“If only all XBox 360 games were done as such there would be no need for having two sets/channels in TV one for proper ports and exclusives and other for bad ports with washed out picture with special settings trying to fix crappy picture.”
PC, Samsung Blray Player (the one from PS3 too) – all of those have good colours. Two TVs (plasma and LED LCD).
And PS3 exclusive games and those good ports too.
I have and can use calibration videos and pictures.
Only those ports on PS3 in like half of them them have washed out picture.
So please stop going Sonydefenceforce retarded denial over this…
360 is a bit sharper. Look at the picture with the soldier wearing a chain mail!
That may be true in a still shot, but in game, the likelihood of anyone noticing that while they are moving is very, very slim. As the poster below said, this is an “Epic tie.” for sure. Props to the devs on this one.
No, it’s not true at all.
Read DF face off: the two games are identical from every point of view.
I have to agree. The Xbox version is a little sharper, as is usually the case in these comparisons. This is a great game and ultra smooth.Getting a game to run at 60fps at 720p on the ps3 is quite an achievement. Kudos to the developer.
“The Xbox 360 is the BEST console EVER made.” –John Carmack
In the particular chosen frames chosen from each console, it appears as if the detail of the chain mail on the 360 was slightly better. However, when you watch the cinema on both systems, the chain mail is equally well-rendered. Props to Namco for doing the multi-console thing the right way. Finally a game that is (or should be) pretty much free of videophile nitpicking. Anyone who wants to think one is better than the other, enjoy your fanboydom.
Epic tie.
Saw the face off earlier at eurogamer, it got an easy tie.
wow, everything is Epic to you,
but I like it.
OMG, Android not being an Xbox fanboy!!?? :O this must be a hell of a dream that I have right now!
Sigh….. where are all these fanboys coming from. Its a tie, but then again you can’t win an argument with any of these fanboys. Seriously you have to worry about the difference of the chain mail? why?
While I like any other person is sick of all the fanboys, I think it’s valid to see the chain mail, it’s an anomaly that shows us there’s a difference, which is why we’re here. I voted Xbox win, because of that, and to me what seemed to be slightly better lighting, other than that there’s basically nothing, and it’s a very very narrow Xbox win imo.
I actually think this ones an xbox win, look at the first not per-rendered screenshot. you can clearly see the xbox has a much stronger anti-aliasing. also the chainmail shows that the textures on the xbox are slightly higher. so until we get the full h2h this, in my opinion, is an xbox win.
Why would anyone vote for eh $hitbox version when teh PS3 controller is teh best for fighting games. Plus the game looks better on teh PS3 anyway. Online is where this game is supposed to be good and in that case another epic win for PS3 seeing as xbob lag cant run for 5 minutes without disconnecting.
Shame there isnt any exclusive characters this time around like teh last game or all teh recent fighting games that have come out on the PS3.
Do you actually ever read the stupid BS that you type? You make fanboys look like real gamers.
That’s not how you spell ‘the’.
@PS3FTW
“Why would anyone vote for the $hitbox version, when the PS3 controller is the best for fighting games?”
There are plenty of aftermarket controllers/other options available.
I use the Sega Saturn controller for fighting games.
Stop trolling bro!
I actually own both consoles, and must admit the Xbox’s controller is so much more comfortable, the only people I hear say the opposite are people with smaller hands.. I guess this is you then? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xu_bE7g2wqM
But seriously notice how this guy constantly gets a few thumbs up, are there really some of you that are so sad you think he makes any kind of sense?
i disagree. I have big hands and i preffer the PS3 controller over the 360 controller. Matter of preference is guess.
Amazing Tie! If someone said otherwise they must have Fanboys vision on.
Can we have a Syndicate Demo Screenshot Comparison?
A tie. This is what we like to see from devs. Good job.
It’s a tie. Enough said.
A performance analysis would’ve intrigued me, but to be honest, I’ve already grown too weary of this series to even care.
A screenshot comparison for the co-op demo of Syndicate, please.
What do you think regarding Syndicate, Blood. I assume it’s slightly sub-HD on PS3, at least it looked that way to me. I dig the sci-fi art direction though, no issues there.
Would’ve loved me a SP demo, but the Co-op one just confirmed I want the game d1 anyways.
That’s also the impression I got from playing it. The image seems a tad blurry (even worse when upscaled to 1080p) and the way the pixels “crawled” reminds me a lot of other sub-HD titles that I’ve played in the past. Of course, I do hope that I’m simply imagining things here, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out to be true (seeing that the PS3 versions of titles developed by Starbreeze Studios have all been running at sub-HD resolutions.) Now, while I did a enjoy the demo a whole lot, I think I’m going to wait for some reviews first before deciding whether or not I should buy this game.
DF’s analysis concluded they’re identical in image quality (720p, lighting, motion blur, etc.) and performance (60 fps throughout with the odd, unnoticeable dropped frame here and there). Only difference is seen in the respective AA implementation: FXAA on 360, MLAA on PS3, without any blurring.
Boils down to controller (if no stick available) and network of choice, as online is such an integral part of the experience.
A very close result Namco’s engineers should be commended for.
I thought my pc was not reading the pics properly. some of the pics didn’t change at all between ps3 to xbox 360.
they did a great job. i’d call it a tie.
but, as you said, it boils down to the controller. i don’t have any fighting games on the xbox, its a simple rule. for me to buy one on the xbox, it would heve to be a generational difference.
Man I really hate siegfried’s new character design. he doesn’t even look european anymore. now he just looks like a blonde mitsurugi, ie a japanese guy. gay.
why do all these games look better on the ps3?
They don’t.
This is a perfect tie.
whenever chain mail is rendered on screen, it looks alittle more defined on the 360. not sure why, but maybe its a higher res texture on there or more normal maps.. whatever the case in general the games look identical, its really difficult to tell them apart. great job namco-bandai and team soul
The only difference between these, as another poster has mentioned, is the technique used to implement anti-aliasing. The textures, lighting, resolution and polygonal geometry are identical. The PS3 verions AA creates an overall smoother image at the cost of softening some fine details, more noticeably the chainmail on some characters. A super-slight advantage goes to the 360 here, which manages to do a fine job eliminating jaggies with minimal sharpness loss. However, this difference during regular play is easily negligable making this a tie in my opinion.
Just I/me(?) prefer the Dreamcast version?
They made a Dreamcast version of Soul Calibur V?
If a developer will say something like: Damn, the PS3/Xbox 360 is not capable enough/it’s hard to develop games on it, I’ll gladly show them this game. Seriously, there is barely a difference between them! The textures are also identical on both which is great. Glad to see developers finally know how to develop games on the PS3 properly.
A great tie. I wish all games tied, because there would be no need for mindless arguing. Then again… this website probably wouldn’t exist either.
On the second picture with the slider. One the ps3 version the dude looks like hes high.
This is the closest multiplatform game I’ve ever seen without question – they are literally identical. It’s a great game, too, one which I wholly recommend to everyone!
I have learned that I cannot play this game without arcade sticks.
this year’s best tie, as should be
This is not a tie, the X360 is sharper. Are people blind?
Im not saying its a big deal but there is a diffrence if you have eyes that work.
Watch the digital foundry comparison if you look close enough the ps3 version may look a little sharper and more colorful and maybe better effects so give it up even android thinks its a tie.
There is only 1 single picture where any difference is noticeable, the one with the soldier.. This with the pciture with open eyes in the X360 and closed in the PS3 makes me wonder how LoT took the shots.
when in motion, you will never notica a difference. even from a distance you can’t. either way, it’s a win for both systems.
they match in both mediocrity and averageness
For everyone saying this is a tie (and you don’t have to take my word for it) I played this game on xbox360 for a full week (enough to at least complete the story mode and do some leveling up) and then finally purchased the playstation3 version of the game and i can tell you right now that there is DEFINITELY a visual difference… Even pissed me off because i do most of my online gaming on PSN. For some reason even though they both run at the SAME EXACT frame rate and resolution its almost like the PS3 version isn’t as smooth or something. This is VERY ironic considering the fourth game for both systems were EQUALLY on par with each other. HUGE disappointment…
Did the PS3 have controller lag?
the differences are so incredibly negligable, that it can only be a tie at this point. I do see some slight extra detail on the Xbox though, especially with the chain-mail. Non of which would be noticable during gameplay in any way at all.
Unfortunaly, 360 got this victory (graphics). But let’s not forgot that the PS3 controller is much better for this kind of game than the 360 controller.
I think it’s a draw.
