Head2Head - Red Dead Redemption: Lens of Truth takes a wild ride out West to see which version of Red Dead Redemption wins this Head2Head. Stick around to find out which version should be outlawed!

Lens of Truth took a look at Red Dead Redemption in this Head2Head, presented by Play N Trade, Oviedo, FL. With Rockstar’s long line of open world games, this western based game pushed the genre into the seldom charted era with the style, story, and gameplay you’ve come to expect from the creators of Grand Theft Auto. So saddle-up as the Lens of Truth circles the wagons and analyzes Red Dead Redemption.

Graphics: The overall graphics for Red Dead are quite solid. There never seemed to be a loss of quality in textures from main characters to sub characters or from major environments to inconsequential buildings. The level of quality never wavers. However, from console to console we found differences. We found that while all textures and models looked nearly identical, the Xbox 360 presented at a higher resolution. This led to the overall quality looking slightly better. However, this also helped PlayStation 3. Although resolution was lower, it made shadows softer, and helped give better depth to distant objects.

Performance: While our analyzer was not stable enough to handle Red Dead Redemption, we were able to confirm that the game ran at 30 frames per second on both consoles. We did not see any major screen tearing. Frame rate dipped from time to time, but seemed consistent on both consoles. We believe that the Xbox 360 performed better in a different way, a way that our analyzer would not have noticed. We noticed that shadows had a better draw distance on the Xbox 360. It’s not that shadows were void on the PlayStation 3, it just seemed like the draw distance was shorter, and so in shots such as the ferry boat, you can see the shadows from the docks on the Xbox 360, but not the PlayStation 3. This would come from that the Xbox 360 was able to load more objects per area as well as shadows. This would explain the more obvious difference between the two consoles: the brush. Clearly, the Xbox 360 has twice as mush brush on the ground than the PlayStation 3. Although the differences in foliage is not as obvious as in Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, it can still be seen in the video and rollover images. This led us to believe that Rockstar optimized the PlayStation 3. They traded out extra brush for equal performance rates.

Loading: Although the PlayStation 3 came with a typical mandatory install, the install was rather small. In five samples of load times, the PlayStation 3 loaded faster than the Xbox 360. The differences are significant enough to believe that the samples are not just flukes.
