While I was hoping this comparison would be out before the title hit shelves, I made an educated guess going with the DinoBox as all the preview videos and demos were running on it.
Glad I was correct.
Lead Platform is PS3 according to GamesRadar:
http://www.gamesradar.com/prototype-2-review/?page=2
“This game was reviewed on PlayStation 3 as the lead platform.”
Ah well. According to DF I was wrong. Damn I wish the bastards would post the comparisons BEFORE the release date!
lol
Virtually identical, slight gamma difference and sharpness in favor of the xbox 360.The game looks so old,i would have expected better of the sequel though.
virtually identical, possibly some sharper edges on 360, but more jaggies. other than that hard to really see much in it apart from gamma differences.
according to a poster on EG ps3 version tears less and better frame rate.
“Btw for those interested. I’ve had both versions of the game, 360 and PS3 run side by side on identical monitors and was completely taken by surprise to see the PS3 clearly edging the 360 version.
The 360 tears in the upper half of the screen and has a weird “striping” artifacting on the building textures. Stranger still is the unstable framerate in the 360 version. The issues aren’t game breaking but the game looks and runs noticably cleaner on the PS3 which is also fully v-synced all the time. I’m very interested to see how Digital Foundry explains this
Anyway, with the current lack of a Digital Foundry comparison I hope this helps multiplatform owners.”
Not identical. You can see Xbox360 has more emphasized sweat drops on the character’s face as well visual effects around burning objects, but not on ps3.
If it were up to me I’d pick the version with the best framerate as I do not care about visual effects. I own both, ps3 and 360, but I bought the 360 version.
What also matters is the effective draw distance. Like if you stand on a building, pick up an object and throw it as far as you can. See whether it reaches as far as it flies or disappears eventually. That issue has to do with system memory allocation. Would be interesting if anyone tested that.
I would say that it’s a TIE!
Here’s hoping for a PROTOTYPE 3!
agreed, def a TIE.
Bender, this game is miles better than the first graphically, go back and play it to see for yourself.
hopefully they do make another one, so far im at 16hrs played and 48% done with the story, plus RADNET keeps me waiting for more stuff to do, as well as the DLC, cant wait.
this is a great game and a great sequal, it improved in every aspect of the first
This is a tie. Some screens look better on X360, some on PS3. But Some people say that performance is better on PS3
Not much in this at all. Xbox is a tiny bit sharper, but PS3 has much better lighting. So far, judging by these shots the lighting makes it a PS3 win for me…….so far……
Well as per usual the SUPERIOR Xbox 360 is sharper, more detail, not blurry, better shadows, etc. So far judging by these captures it’s yet another easy Xbox 360 over the over priced internet ready blu ray player.
“Xbox 360 is the BEST console EVER made.” –John Carmack
lol, you sh*t stirring bast*rd!!!
@Buying
It looks great in still screenshots on 360, moving is another matter. Screen tear galore and frame rate all over place
360 greatest ever console for still screenshots!
(chill out people I’m only teasing the troll, I dont actually have anything against 360)
This game is more proof if needed, that each has pro’s and cons, but the engine is usually biggest determining factor in quality of game
@samchez77
ROFL.
come on man..lighting is better on xbox! take a look and c that most of the ps3 pix have no shine effects on the objects and the xbox is slightly sharper ,the ps3 have so slightly better aa barely visible.
hohoho!!!
360 version looks sharper
You must be some sort of scripted bot.
Makes me all fuzzy inside when games look almost the same on both systems.
A great tie is my opinion.
Aside from the Xbox 360 version looking ever-so-slightly sharper, both seem pretty much identical to one another. Let’s see what the performance analysis has to show.
@Lens of Truth
I would like to request a Head2Head for Ridge Racer Unbounded and Skullgirls.
Same here. Very close, 360 slightly sharper in some places.
so no body can see the missing lighting effects on the 360????
@sanchez, im curious about the lighting, as i spotted it too, but never was convinced it was actually better lighting in all shots, and not just slightly different screenshots. ‘unless they’re identical shots i’m not going to make that claim, but yeah there are instances where I thought ps3 had more realistic lighting
xbox version is muddy and pixelated while ps3 has high guality textures, super lighting and nigh on perfect performance
You’re so bad at lying it is not even funny. Everyone says it is a tie, then you come up and say something ridiculous. You know, just because you own a ps3 does not mean you have to defend it every single time. It does better sometimes, and sometimes 360 does better.
They look exactly the same. I heard the 360 version doesn’t perform as well but lying about textures and lighting isn’t helping your cause.
I bought the PS3 version. There is absolutely NO screen tearing. I have the most sensitive eyes to tearing and you can trust me when I say this game doesn’t tear a single bit on the PS3 no matter how much chaos is on the screen. I’m a happy PS3 owner!
I did see some rather bad videos on youtube of the 360 version. It tears almost constantly during free roam. That would make me physically sick. I’m glad I don’t have a 360 anymore
I got the PS3 version aswell, no screen-tearing as far as I’ve seen and I’ve played it for a couple of hours. Saw some Xbox 360 videos and there was alot of screen-tearing, especially when you’re gliding through the air.
I understand your hatred for screen tearing. Its what ruined Assassins creed-brotherhood for me. It would be awesome game otherwise……it was a screen tear fest.
Very close. Xbox 360 version slightly sharper here and there but PS3 only owners aren’t losing out in any way, and with an apparent better framerate PS3 is probably the version to get. But lets wait for a performance analysis.
I voted tie, The ever so slightly sharper 360 version probably would not be noticeable during gameplay. I also have read that the PS3 performance is much better than the 360 version. For me, It gets a tie in the visual department but on the performance side the PS3 takes the win.
So the PS3 does perform better?
I’ll hold off on a LoT performance analysis or a Digital Foundry one. Either way, it doesn’t look like a bad purchase either way.
Its using a modified version of the saints row 3rd engine… obviously PS3 edges this win.
Prototype 2 uses Radical’s own Titanium 2.0 engine, not a modified version of Saint’s third engine, which was just an upgraded version of Saint’s 2 engine I believe
You got owned
360 wins again
Judging by the stuff people are saying about the frame rate, I’m going to lol when you’re nowhere to be seen in the performance analysis comments section.
It’s funny you say that because the minute I started playing the game I thought “This looks and feels a lot like Saint’s Row The Third”. Not only does the framerate and motion blur remind me of SR3, but also the SSAO, Animations and the fact that there’s no tearing on the PS3 version but tons of the 360 version.
I don’t know if what you said is true or not, but if I were guessing, it DOES look/feel like the SR3 engine.
The only thing that does not remind me of SR3 is that P2 is WAAAAAAY more fun and interesting to play than that piece of crap SR3 game. I didn’t really like SR3 very much. Too goofy for my tastes.
Sharper textures on 360, better lighting on PS3.
for anyone who cares, this is the posters more detailed analysis of game.
I have had both version of the game literally running side by side on identical HP x23 LED 1080p monitors both hooked up via HDMI 1.4 cables. The game was fully installed on the 360 ‘s HDD.
To my surprise it was the PS3 version that edged the 360 version.
For some odd reason the 360 has a dipping framerate, most noticeable during ingame cutscenes. Also the 360 version tears pretty bad. Not Resident Evil 5 bad, but still noticeably so. Texturework also favor the PS3 version. Your character Heller looks pretty much identical on both platforms but the ads on city walls are higher res on the PS3.
To top things off there is some strange artifacting going on on the 360 build. The walls of buildings show what can best be described as a flickering diagonal linear pattern. I’m not sure what’s causing that. Could be some shading gone wrong but it’s odd looking.
What the 360 does do better though is dept of field. There’s a better contrast to the image, but in all honesty that’s the case for 99% of multiplatform titles.
I’m honestly not biased towards either console, I’m a true multiplatform gamer but the PS3 version of P2 looks noticeably cleaner than the 360 build. (which is still very acceptable btw)”
Very helpful comment. The guy was very thorough for a video game forum/comment post..
essentially a tie, but the 360 has a slightly better aa filter preserves very tiny marginal more detail.
that aa filter, does seem less adept at edging on 360 though, the jaggies are more prominent.
I’ll be honest, I dont care which is better, as I personally dont want the game, unless it’s going cheap. Give me infamous over this any day of week.
Lens of truth please hurry with the analysing I want to buy this game but I wanna be sure that it doesnt have tearing
What’s the matter with my eyes? Every screen shot is blurry. Oh wait, that’s was the PS3 version I was looking at! Whoo! My eyes are just fine. Thank God.
It’s unfortunate that the PS3 didn’t have a better graphic chip since it came out a year after the 360. It’s unfortunate that in order to eliminate the jaggies on the PS3 they must have a couple of the SPUs/SPEs reprocess the image which unfortunately causes the graphics to blur slightly as a trade-off. I wish they had a better way. I know many other games–PS3 exclusives– don’t seem to have that (I don’t think).
I wonder if they had to reduce the number of graphics on screen or the number of enemies on screen for the PS3 version for the sake of performance like they did with Ninja Gaiden Sigma II (reduce the number of enemies, but increase their health), Bayonetta (still performed horrible vs. the 360), Red Dead Redemption, Oblivion).
Don’t let these comparisons spoil you’re fun if you chose the “wrong version”. Rarely is the defects in one version really noticable or game breaking when you’re playing the game.
Recent 360 games have been using FXAA nowadays which blurs the image slightly. It ain’t no issue exclusive to the PS3.
What Ninja Gaiden Sigma lost was gained in other areas specifically in image quality. Higher res textures and a higher res game overall.
FFXIII sucked on 360. Portal 2 was a blur fest on 360. Saints Row the Third, Duke Nukem Forever, plus many more and now Prototype 2 (apparently) have performance issues on the 360 compared to the PS3 version.
Also Oblivion was superior on the PS3 for a good while what are you talking about. lol
There, silly 360 fanboy troll post easily debunked in a matter of seconds. Try again.
@CERNAML,
In regards to your trolling response,
I don’t know what you were looking at, but the PS3 version is blurred compared to the 360 version.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 came out a substantial time later than than Ninja Gaiden 2 for the 360 so you would expect some improvements, but because the PS3 doesn’t support the polygon count that the 360 has, they had to reduce the number of enemies on screen and that might be true of other games.
And yes, they’ve had to reduce the amount of graphic on screen for some games so the PS3 wouldn’t suffer performance wise or due to the PS3′s memory limitations.
You’ve only mentioned a small handful of games where the performance on the PS3 might be better, but at the expense of blurred out graphics 100% of the time throughout the game. Most of the time, the 360 version outperforms and looks better with fuller colors.
Compare NHL12 and FIFA for the 360 and PS3. The PS3 version will make you puke with it’s half-baked sickly colors and plenty of jaggies. And those are games from the present and not from 4 years ago.
Like I said, it don’t let these comparisons ruin your fun no matter what version you buy, you really won’t notice the differences most of the time, they are seldom game breaking, so don’t the the comparisons spoil your fun. I played through Saints Row 3 for the 360 twice and I didn’t notice any screen tearing. If it was there, its not noticeable or detracts from the game at all. I played the PS3 version of Rage and thought it was great. I didn’t realize how inferior it was to the 360 until I came here.
Many many mulit-plat games for the PS3 are inferior to the 360 in image quality and performance. It’s only in the past couple years the PS3 versions have improved significantly.
@twisted xbox, theres no doubts that each console has its pro’s and cons and the majority of issues are to be found in the simple fact that whichever console is primary port ie engine is designed with it’s architecture in mind, then that is the strongest version.
However your claim that mlaa causes blur is bogus, if they use fxaa then maybe there is some truth in that the fxaa process on the ps3 is slightly less refined due to having to be done on the gpu, but the mlaa process doesnt blur , it’s actually equivalent to about anywhere upto 16 msaa when used in God of War 3 and at it’s lowest 4 msaa. The issue with the process is that it doesnt like long thin lines, and we get pixel crawl. It’s also cpu intensive and if not careful can impact on input response times. Blur, no!
Ps3 has poor bandwidth compared to 360, and issues can arise with large amounts of alpha textures, such as fire water, and foliage (see dragons dogma) and there are no doubt other areas where it’s weaker, but again, it seems these issues are minimalised if the primary port is ps3 and then transferred to 360, and this seems to be case here, unless it’s just simply that the nature of the game itself suits ps3′s strengths more.
Majority of games are still designed primarily around 360, and when they arent they tend to be even or in favour of ps3. Surely this suggests the key thing in most instances is the engine itself.
I think it’s fair to say, overall the 360 is the more balanced designed gaming console, but there’s no doubts each has own strengths and weaknesses. All depends on what is being asked of them with the vision of game devs, and more importantly how they are being asked to do it ie the game engine.
“I don’t know what you were looking at, but the PS3 version is blurred compared to the 360 version.”
What is? Prototype? I didn’t say anything about Prototype. But I will say that the frame rate is supposedly superior on the PS3.
“Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 came out a substantial time later than than Ninja Gaiden 2 for the 360 so you would expect some improvements, but because the PS3 doesn’t support the polygon count that the 360 has, they had to reduce the number of enemies on screen and that might be true of other games.”
They had an entirely different team and director working on the Sigma series. I bet you that if both versions were developed in parallel, they would be so much closer than the two different games we have now.
“And yes, they’ve had to reduce the amount of graphic on screen for some games so the PS3 wouldn’t suffer performance wise or due to the PS3′s memory limitations.”
I can only think of a few open world games that needed to do this. And it’s usually caused by poor coding. Streaming tech is getting better and memory limitations have become less of an issue for that.
“You’ve only mentioned a small handful of games where the performance on the PS3 might be better, but at the expense of blurred out graphics 100% of the time throughout the game. Most of the time, the 360 version outperforms and looks better with fuller colors.”
First, you only mentioned a small handful as well. There are many more games I could have listed. Second, NONE of the games I listed are blurry compared to the 360 version. You’re out of your mind if you thought that. They are flat out superior in both image quality, performance, and possibly even when it came to content on disc.
“Compare NHL12 and FIFA for the 360 and PS3. The PS3 version will make you puke with it’s half-baked sickly colors and plenty of jaggies. And those are games from the present and not from 4 years ago.”
lol Don’t even bring up EA Sports. They are the most incompetent out of all of EA when it comes to PS3 ports. EA has been doing a damn swell job lately with multiplats. You’d think EA Sports weren’t even under EA’s umbrella at all.
set all the stupid fanboyish stuff aside. THIS IS A TIE. Maybe we need to wait for a performance review.
@twisted
I’m not sure it’s the ps3 pictures that are blurry, I think you should lay off those adult websites, it’s affecting your vision. Lol
I used to have FIFA on 360 before I got rid of it, and now have it on ps3, and honestly, you can hardly notice any difference when playing. That’s the problem with spending your life on a website trolling, you forget that when playing games, most these differences are not noticeable.
I suggest you actually play some games, you might enjoy it, and not be worrying about minute differences
You’re probable right about the FIFA series. FIFA is supposed to have better graphics than PES. I played the 360 versions of PES 2009, 2010, and 2011, and the PS3 versions of FIFA World Cup ‘South Africa and the demo for FIFA 12. PES on the 360 blows away FIFA on the PS3.
I played NHL 2K9 on the 360 religously and the I bought NHL 2K10 for the PS3 and gagged and wretched and couldn’t stomach it.
I played EA’s NHL 09, 10, 11, and 12 on the 360. I played the demo for NHL 12 for the PS3 and gagged and retched. Yes, sickly colors and lots of jaggies. I wouldn’t be able play the PS3 version and enjoy it knowing I should have bought the 360 version.
I played the PS3 version of F.E.A.R 3, RAGE, Soul Caliber V recently and had no problems with them even though they are the inferior versions.
No, I don’t visit adult websites.
Yes, you need your eyes checked PS3 fanboy SUARE207. The PS3 version is blurred out, especially when you compare it to the 360 version for referrence.
PS3 fanboy SUARE207, you and all the other PS3 fanboys need psychotherapy. You guys are always in denial of the truth about the PS3′s shortcomings even when the evidence is right before your eyes and the evidence speeks for itself.
Have fun playing the game no matter what version you have. It has an engaging twist to the story, but the missions are repetative and it’s not nearly the roller coaster ride the first on was. If you don’t have the Radnet challenges, get those if they offer them as DLC in the future. They add challenges to the game (they are those Gold, Siver, Bronze jumping and racing event side quests that the first game had.
eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-face-off-prototype-2
just so i can say I told you so.
Theres a mild fxaa causing some minor loss of detail, but less jaggies and pixel crawling.
Exactly like i said at top of article.
Im not even remotely unaware of ps3′s shortcomings, but if this fxaa here bothers you, I take it you didnt play portal 2 on 360? and you certainly shouldnt play this as this has screen tear and frame rate issues on 360.
My point is that the loss of detail is minute when viewed from normal distances and not up close like on a pc monitor, and doesnt affect game in substantial way. Get over it.
minor screen tear and frame rate drops are worse, but even they are pretty minor and wont ruin the game for people.
There are always good and bad ports, and ps3 gets more bad than 360, and for most part it gets the inferior version. How much is to do with ps3 hardware issues and how much is related to publishers not giving devs budgets to fully optimise an engine, is hard to gauge, but we get idea that majority could be improved with a bigger budget, as when ps3 is lead format, it’s usually very adequate and can even favour ps3.
I have stated several times that 360 is overall the better hardware, because of it’s unified ram, and simplicity to program, along with larger bandwidth, but both have pros and cons, as is exhibited when ps3 ports end up better, like this game, where the ps3 frame rate is better and also has vsych engaged, so no screen tear.
So each has shortcomings , not just ps3, but usually engine is deciding factor above hardware
@TwistedXbot
Soul Caliber V inferior on the PS3? LMFAO!
You are quite the funny one.
Im an xbox36o only owner. In this battle, the 360 is more detailed and vibrant on all aspect. The 360 wins.
Head 2 Head Record Battles
360/ps3
Sniper Elite V2 – PS3 Wins 0-1
I Am Alive – Xbox360 Wins 1-1
Prototype 2 – Xbox360 wins 2-1
360 fanboy, youre indeed a 360 fanboy, if you look at what people who actually own the game, or have made the performance analysis, the frame rate and tearing on 360 makes any deficit in image quality the preferable of two, plus there’s supposed to be some strange textures floating around on 360 version. You can call it a win if you like, and it makes you feel any better lol, but the real purpose of these articles is to give people who own both consoles the info to choose best version, or to help people avoid buying bad ports, and in reality, with the screen tear and frame rate drops, there’s no way you can recommend this as best version. However it’s far from bad on 360 and owners of either can buy this knowing they not getting totally screwed. Whether game’s any good is different matter
PS3 wins this one dumbass. Locked vsync, higher FXAA settings(means less jaggies visible) and STILL 4-5 frames ahead of 360 during battle gameplay.
Well the monkeys voting 360 due to partiality just made themselves look even dumber. DF’s verdict is in and PS3 wins. Overall performance and graphics as well. The ever so slightly softer look on PS3 is a result of FXAA not weaker textures. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-face-off-prototype-2
It’s a win for ps3 for sure, on a game not half bad for once.
It’s no mass effect 3 for stunning quality, but it’s better than the recent ps3 wins(mostly rubbish games).
If it is running on the saints row the third engine, it looks like there’s a cross platform engine out there that actually runs better on ps3 for once.
Let’s hope we never see it used on another game lol.
Droidy what in the hell are you talking about? I’d like some of whatever it is you’re smoking. Prototype 2 is running on an updated version of the Titanium engine which showcases notable upgrades in graphics over the last Prototype such as deferred lighting and SSAO. Prototype may not have the smoothest animations but it is damn good looking game visually. You’re always at DF. Haven’t you read their face-off yet???
