6th picture, holy crap. 360 lacks AA?
ps3 gets my vote by a noticeable margin, but wow. i wasn’t really expecting the 360 version to have more aliasing than the ps3 o_o
that, and the desk looks weird in the 360 version.
If anyone votes for 360 or even a tie, they’re fanboys. As of writing, looks like over 10% of voters are one.
The difference is obvious and coupled with Steam support–PS3 wins hands down.
lol wut? look on 1st and 2nd picture, table without shadows, yeah on other pictures xbox looks more blurry and without AA, but imo Valve wants to sale ps3 versions with steam, so they did it this way, but i dont really care, gameplay itself is one that matters! And I love portal 1, this is must have on any platform!
but PS3 wins this one, and I am little disappointed, because graphics does not look very good (graphics I mean), and still it lacks AA on xbox 360?
Or they could be someone with a weird fetish for games without AA and worse graphics, less content and less features.
haha weird fetish for shit, nice i like that. i would give ya a thumbs up, that that’s been removed. yeah PS3 wins by a LANDSLIDE
what valve do? destroyed the Xbox 360 version of … why no AA filter? the Xbox 360 could have at least 2msaa!
if the valve has done shit with the Xbox 360 version I do not buy!
but has areas that the PS3 has no shadows, and the xbox 360 has.
where is it missing shadows… ? surely you don’t mean the desk…
I think PS3 is the obvious winner. On top of that, the PS3 gets Steam support and a free PC/ MAC copy, so I think it’s also obvious which version people should buy. Can’t wait to pick up my copy.
Ps3 version looks better, and it has better AA also, it seems like there are lower resolutions on some things on the xbox 360 version.
This game goes totally to the ps3, since u can also get the pc version
The tides sure have turned in this round…
My copy (PS3) should be here tomorrow. But I plan on playing it on PC mostly. Looking good either way though!
The PS3 easily wins this bout. Better lighting, AA, and SSOA effects seem to be the most noticable differences here.
PS3 is the clear winner hear, the lighting looks amazing. I’m so happy Valve is finally showing PS3 owners some love.
Valve’s very first PS3 game and they absolutely hit a home run. Cannot wait to see how Android spins this one. LOL
Cell-based MLAA on the PS3 = Zero jaggies (on most edges) = win for the PS3.
If you’d look at previous Valve games on 360 (Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, Orange Box), they look exactly like this. Meaning no AA, with simple edge blur.
Visual-wise, there seems to be several differences, though not really groundbreaking, clearly leaning towards in the favor of the PS3 version. AA and SSOA implementation seem more efficient in the PS3 version. I also spotted that several objects in the PS3 version seem to be rendered at slightly higher resolution than their Xbox 360 counterparts. Like I said, not really that big of deal but, there is one thing that seriously got me… the lighting…
Seriously, there seems to be something very wrong with the Xbox 360 version in the screenshot of the desk. It looks as though there’s a light bulb shining down directly from above the desk or something, because the pitch black shadow that was generated seems horrendously mismatched with its surroundings.
Now, I’ll wait for the performance analysis to finish up this requiem.
I agree the AA on the ps3 is nearly perfect showing good smoothed edges in the other hand Xbox shows terrible and unexplicable jaggies.
But in the lighting department, 360 shows more lighting sources, that’s why the desk on 360 looks different (not worse) and here it come the important thing… CAST SHADOW, if you look at the entire screenshoot y easely noticeable also on the wall.
BTW neither version support SSAO… maybe some people uses special fanboy glasses to see better lighting and better ( inexistent) SSAO on the ps3.
More lighting sources=more contrast betwen darker and brighter areas,
But nothing surprisingly after see how many pepople declare as a winner Homefront for the ps3 with less lighting sources, worts textures and overal worst framerate, maybe now is fancy to see games flatter due to less lighting sources…. mmmm
Fanboy glasses aren’t really needed when SSOA is clearly there…for both versions. Those who didn’t see it better double-check or consider buying a pair glasses for impaired vision.
Regarding the lighting, the Xbox 360 version has more light source? Perhaps to you it does. To me, it seems like incorrect lighting implementation. Here is how I see it:
-The setting seems to be around sometimes in the late morning or noon within a room that has the lights off. Both versions suggest the same thing, except that the Xbox 360 version seems to have some other direct light source inside the room despite no light is seen turned on.
-Looking at the window shades. The PS3 version displays a illuminated shade, showing that sunlight is being blocked…by the shade. For some reason we see a much dimmer shade in Xbox 360 version.
-If the sunlight outside, which being partially blocked by the shade, is the only light source that illuminates the room, then it makes sense to see a soft cast of shadow of the desk and chair to their side (given the direction of the light source) in the PS3 version, since the room is darken to begin with, differences in shadow can’t be too drastic. On the other hand, we have a pitch black mass directly right beneath the desk in Xbox 360 version, inside an already darken room no less. And the black mass/shadow is fixated right beneath the desk although there isn’t any strong light source above it, which makes it even stranger to not see any shadow to side, seeing supposedly the only light source that is from the windows at the far side of the room.
All in all, seems like a wrongly implemented light source on the Xbox 360 part.
But of course, the issue is very debatable, and I myself have to recheck that room once I got the game to see if the light source works like I speculated.
I didn’t want to offend yo (about fanboy glasses) but I’ve just finished the game and SSAO is totally absent in the game
As you can see in the prerendered shadow on the top of the room,(yes some environment shadows are prerrendered in to the texture) it should be 2 light sources, and one of them is missing on the ps3 version, that’s why one of them “fall” on the desktop that one is the reason of the desktop shadow ( too dark I must say)
I dunno if there are some other light sources missing in both version but as I can see in this one is clear missing one on the ps3
PD: GOTY
Hmm…perhaps I mistook self-shadowing for SSOA…I don’t know,…but the environment doesn’t seem flat like how other games that doesn’t support SSOA are…Then again, my technical knowledge are more or less limited…
That aside, I still can’t agree with your explanation regarding the lighting, especially since I just bought the game and currently checking out the room now. From what I see after carefully examined everywhere, there is no other active light source in the room. However the shadows were cast on top of the ceiling or anywhere else is work of the sunlight alone, with proof being that they all pretty much originate from the shades. With that, I’m back to what I said in the original post.
Although seeing the game in real life make me realize that all shadows are parts of the textures just like you said. So, I supposed Valve intended to only use pre-rendered shadows in this room which would make sense seeing things the way it is. Perhaps they forgot to disable the real-time shadow feature in this particular scene on the Xbox 360 version, which ultimately resulted to that big black mass…
Ps3 has way bttr AA and ssao n lighting
I really hate how scatter these PS3 wins are. I wish we just had a happy “This console always wins” type of thing to make it easier on me when it comes time to making a purchase. Also, it makes me mad that PS3 can get a win here, but not for that many other things.
Lol, outside of h2h there are lot’s of things the ps3 wins on…
Well said. Thumbs up.
wow claps to valve for the first devs to claim that the ps3 version would look the best on console and it did. my cred to valve went up. now to see if the performance holds up on the ps3.
this game is begging us to be bought on ps3 so badly :S
I saw both leak version on Youtube…
Both version seens has lots screen tearing, but 360 version seens has lover res and SSAO issue…
PS3 version looks good but how about loading time and framerate?
Whatever, I’ll expecting full H2H.
It isn’t just a lack of AA alone on the 360, the difference is so large it’s as if the 360 version is lower res.
The 360 version looks like a PS3 port. lol.
It’s kinda sad that valve would intentionally sabotage the 360 version just to appease the PS3 fanbase but it’s not really surprising considering their statements. Just goes to show the sad state multplat development is when they lead with such bias.
i dont see how you can say they sabotoged the 360 version. honestly there is alot more you can do with those spu’s in that cell then you think. they didnt sabotoge anything. they showed no reason to short side the ps3 cause of the 360′s shortcomings.
yep there is no reason for this game to look the way it does on xbox 360, it’s actually really bad considering the money they have made off the xbox platform u woud think there would be some loyalty. @StoneyYoshi the cell dnt come into this so be quiet fanboy. i will be renting this as i won’t be handing my money over to a company that has basically shown no love for the xbox at all. funny how all the ps3 fanboys will cry its cuz of the cell, just as well this game is more about gameplay than graphics. what gets me is that the xbox will probably sell more copies.
Bahahahaha.
Denial at its finest.
I find it ironic that people who label other people fanboys are usually the fanboys themselves.
@Allan: There is no such thing as developers intentionally sabotage a version of game when it’s their reputation that is on the line.
@StoneyYoshi: Don’t know about shortcomings but there have been more beautiful looking games on the Xbox 360 before, so it really doesn’t make sense that the system’s shortcomings would show itself now, in this game of all places (come on, the game’s visual isn’t really all that groundbreaking to begin with.)
My take on this:
Perhaps more time were spent optimizing the game for the PS3 version, and since Valve didn’t have enough time to optimize the Xbox 360 version more, we get the result that we see now. Not exactly all that bad, though…
dont be a douche lol
its not that bad, and they havent sabotaged the 360 version. Both consoles have their strengths and weaknesses, and if portal has techniques and effects that suit the ps3′s architecture better, then the ps3 version will look better. Theres probably apsects of it that look better than ps3 version on 360 too. Theyve probably built their engine with ps3 in mind and ported to 360, but even that wouldnt really explain differences, as games like vanqush looked equal on both and were ported from ps3 to 360.
Its simply that the ps3 has certain strengths and theyve been able to utlise them better in the design of this game (at least in these screen shots).if theyd led on 360 using ue3 , then 360 wins every time, as engines designed around strengths of 360, but in reality the ps3 should be better at lighting and physics etc, as it has more powerful cpu, but when games designed arounf 360′s gpu, there are issues on ps3, as it has poor gpu.
Here, they led with ps3, as if they led on 360, the ps3 version would be harder to port, so theyve done it to make life less difficult for themselves basically.
The differences are negligible, and certainly nowhere near as some ps3 ports in past, get over it, it still looks nice, and its not like this game is all about the visuals anyway
Yea because if the devs don’t use CELL the right way and use the Spe’s you get a gimped game.MLAA needs to be a must for ps3 games. It may look rough at times but i think it’s the best AA solution the Ps3 has.Next to the fact it gives the gpu more headroom which helps games look better.
I also think that the version of xbox 360 was sabotaged.
The version of the Xbox 360 was not to be worse than the ps3 version.
xbox 360 generally has at least 2msaa in their games, why Valve did not use the 2msaa?
xbox 360 even has games with 4msaa! the valve did a bad job on the Xbox 360 version, that is fact!
2x msaa even 4x isn’t better then MLAA.The Ps3 version would still look a bit better. If you go to eurogamer you will see the shadows on the Ps3 and Pc version’s look near the same. The desk pic still looked bad so no the 360 does not have better shadows.I know yall 360 fanboys are shiting yourself’s it’s ok deep breaths and let it out.Just get the Ps3 version over the 360.
Valve used MLAA on PS3. MLAA equals 16x Q CSAA, and it’s even better in some occasions.
So, deal with it.
Both versions are native 720p, but PS3 has its MLAA plus better lighting and a stronger SSAO effect. Also textures are better defined on PS3.
Even with a 4x MSAA XBox 360 couldn’t have done nothing against MLAA, which is the same algorithm used in God Of War and Uncharted 2, just to mention a couple of them.
a time ago I saw a video and read texts that were being done experimenting with mlaa on xbox 360, xbox 360 was able to use mlaa very well. in the case of Portal 2 xbox 360 it seems that they have neither 2mlaa … I do not know why?. now the question of SSAO is a miracle the ps3 version have SSAO,. SSAO in the XBOX 360 is better in most games but not this time, it is clear that the valve did a bad job on the Xbox 360 version.
That’s what appen when developer use the real power of the cell !?!??
@Lens-of-Truth:
I just stumbled upon this site and it found it awfully similar to the design of your site, are both sites related or something?
Oh wait, that’s not the question I want to ask. Here look at this:
gameblurb.net/featured/versus-portal-2-screenshot-comparison/
On the screenshot with the desk, both versions seem darker (especially the PS3 one) compare to your screenshots, and they claimed to have captured these using HDMI, Full Range at 720p. So my question is:
Did these guys manipulate their screenshots or did you guys not enable “RGB Full Range/Super White” for the PS3 version and “Expanded Reference Levels” for the Xbox 360 version while capturing these screenshots? Or… were these perhaps captured via Component?
wow those pics make 360 version look much worse than on lot. its literally like looking at a ue3 port from 360 to ps3 a few years back, almost low res overall on 360.
it feels weird weird lol
i thought as standard lot use default settings on both consoles, im fckd if i know why though, as it makes games look completely different. did u see the wwe game demo head to head recently, ps3 version looked like they were all anaemic and that the textures were inferior etc
Same as always with retail H2H’s, we captured both using HDMI and Full RBG with Super White enabled for the PS3, and Expanded set on the Xbox 360.
Maybe its there capture device? Not sure, but check back soon when we do our full in-depth analysis which will include more screens/roll-overs for you to compare.
I see. Alright, I’ll wait for the H2H then.
By the way, I just checked their staffs and surprised to find out Corey and Drew are part of GameBlurb’s staffs, with Corey being the founder.
Interesting stuffs…
Are you supposed to use Full RBG and Expanded?
A lot of people told me not to because my TV wouldn’t support it and it would probably give me “black crush”.
I chose PS3, but other than worse SSAO and worse AA looks like a tie.
It’s funny though how people are saying that Valve sabotaged the 360 version. It’s not sabotage. The game looks pretty much identical on the 360 except for the issues I’ve listed. Just like a lot of 360 games port to the PS3, it looks to be developed first on the PS3 and it was a port to the 360. But it’s a very good port.
Why are people crying about a good 360 port and the PS3 version slightly better? I mean can the 360 not lose once in awhile? Bayonetta, Red Dead Redemption, Ghostbusters. This port isn’t even remotely as bad as those and listen to everyone cry.
For the past half year or more, it’s either been coming up with a tie, slight win for the PS3, or slight win for the 360. That’s a win for everyone.
I looked at the other comparison that Bloodios linked and it looks like theres a noticeable blur filter due to the AA on the 360. Nevermind. PS3 wins not a tie.
Red Dead Redemption isn’t particular all that bad on the PS3. You want a bad one? Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Double Agent, inferior to its Xbox 360 in so many ways. Also let’s not forget about Sonic…but then, they’re SEGA’s ports…
red dead redemption was ok unless u compared side by side, and then it looked woeful with the lack of foliage etc and the clearly lower res(think its same as black ops on ps3)
bayonetta still reigns as king of f’ed up ports
Bayonetta never bothered me one bit on PS3. I played the demo on XBOX 360 and the PS3 version (with patch) and I can honestly say I only noticed the PS3 had a slightly lower frame rate and slightly longer load times, that’s it.
I would say Final Fantasy XIII and Red Dead Redemption are the biggest differences I have seen.
While low resolution textures and horrible QAA blur can be tolerated to some degree, the significantly low-resolution and pixellated shadows still totally tick me off every time I see it, and frame rate fluctuations are still present. I think if the PS3 version of Bayonetta was to disable AA, use A2C, and utilized the Blu-ray humongous storage space to replace in-game cutscenes with pre-rendered ones, the result would have been at least less horrible. That said, the translation of Bayonetta from Xbox 360 version to the PS3 version simply doesn’t work. I think Platinum Games simply has to remake the game from scratch exclusively for the PS3 if we are to expect its version to turn out decent.
I like the xbox 360 lighting…i think its better.
In what’s supposed to be better ps3??I don’t see it…maybe somebody could tell me…
its more realistic basically, the way that light would fall on a room given where the light source was etc.
it happens often in 360-ps3 ports like bulletstorm, but the 360 looks like ps3 version in these shots.
I agree in some ways it looks better, but technically its not better
yea…i think you’re right…
That’s annoying. I want to get this on Xbox to play coop with my brother on Live. But I have to say the PS3 version looks better in every screenshot. Quite a lot better, in fact.
I don’t really want to have to buy both. Tough decision.
Buy it for PS3, give the Steam copy to your brother and then play co-op.
i am going to do the same
I ended up getting the 360 version. I did consider the Steam copy, but my bro’s PC simply isn’t up to the task.
I have to say though, having completed the single player, the 360 version still looks and plays great, with a good solid frame rate throughout. I was also pleasantly surprised to unlock some neat avatar awards. The fact that PSN is STILL down makes me all the more pleased with my decision.
Screenshot comparison lol.
After crysis 2 and some of the blurry 360 shots that wasn’t in the actual game itself, i’ve come to the conclusion that screenshots offer the worst kind of accuracy when comparing two versions together.
Roll on the actual head to head itself when we can check out the framerate and such.
ANDROID123 IS A LIE!
ANDROID123 IS A LIE!
ANDROID123 IS A LIE!
android, u live in a place called denial, but u really have become the lovable comedy character in this place, unlike some of the moron fan boys. these shots are crystal clear, and the gameblurb ones are even more damning, but its not a game breaker either way.will u even be buying the game? im going to wait tbh, im going to play half life 2 orange box , as i havent played before and see if i like portal, as im not convinced ill like this at all.Despite graphics being better on ps3(lol) and the stellar review .
im off to sell my 360, as its gathering dust and money will go towards a gaming pc instead for my multiplatform titles. see ya lata pal
Lol, Andriod, your’e back! We missed you on the C2 vs KZ3 H2H where Crysis 2, your proclaimed graphical king, got its ass handed to it by a PS3 exclusive. Isn’t that just nice?
Sorry bro, but even if by some miracle of god, LoT manages to BS and make it seem like these 2 games are somehow equal, or that the PS3 version looks worse… It still boils down to the fact that the PS3 version comes with Steam Support, Cross-platform play and chat, and a free PC/ Mac copy of the game. Theres no reason on earth or heaven to buy this title on the Shitbox. Now, I know you don’t own both consoles, I would suggest you just turning away from this one…. Though I’m sure you weren’t going to buy it anyway seeing as it’s a thinking game.
Come on Android. Humor me buddy. I haven’t had a good laugh yet today. Tell me how this is going to somehow be a better purchase on 360. Come on. I’m sure you can come up with something in that flinstone little head of yours.
you can’t talk, you’re even more of a fanboy than him…
I chose to buy the 360 version and I have to say it is one of the best games I have ever played. And yes I own both consoles, but my brother does not. If you want some actual facts of the 360 version’s superiority, then you get Avatar awards, and you can actually PLAY ONLINE, since the PSN is still down. Not to mention I prefer the 360 controller for this type of game (OK that wasn’t a fact).
Don’t get me wrong, I would have bought the PS3 version if it weren’t for my brothers perpetual nagging. But I took a chance on the 360 version and I haven’t looked back. Sure the PS3 version looks better and the Steam support is great, but that doesn’t render the 360 version useless, does it?
Sorry to double-post, everyone. I just want to clarify that I’m not saying I think the 360 version is superior because it clearly isn’t. I know PSN will be back soon, but it has been offline since Wednesday, which would have been annoying for my brother and I. I was also pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of avatar awards, which in my opinion are awesome. Just because the PS3 version is superior in some ways, it doesn’t make buying the 360 version stupid.
Can’t work both ways Android.
Crysis 2 looks better in a screenshot comparison and you claim victory.
As soon as the PS3 looks better in a screenshot comparison then “teh screenshotz is a lie!”
Oh…and one more thing…
Watch this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpcQoATYgsY
There’s the spin! LOL
Good lord your insane, have your self committed already. Or do a nice FIY lobotomy, i heard it does wonders for minds like yours.
Wow I really didn’t see this coming.
I wonder if Valve use MLAA for tradicional MSAA method. If is MSAA its very strange ps3 got a higher level then 360, after all theses games its more them proved that 360 can handle MSAA much better then ps3.
Seeing this just make me feel more confortable for a hipotetical Half Life 3 soon, good job Valve, just make sure in your next game you get more parity, I’m a bit of shocked that 360 lacks in AA, this game don’t see that hot to justify that. I don’t believe in sabotage either.
Dude, Android123, ADMIT DEFEAT! It is NOT THAT HARD to do that. Stop being a stuck up fanboy and learn to tell the truth. Screenshot comparisons are way better than anything else. Stop making excuses to make you feel better. ACCEPT DEFEAT.
P.S. Video comparisons aren’t good at all!
Holy shit!
I’ll state this again I own both systems and the 360 version looks like crap.
I have to say the PS3 wins on this one hands down and you get the Steam Code for the PC version. How could you go any other way?
Really looks like Valve is loving one console over the other.
What I don’t get is the Halflife 2 engine has been around since before I was married and that was 6six years ago. How is it possible that it looks so bad on 360?
Newell said that Portal 2 would be best on PS3, I guess he wasn’t kidding!
Wow, the difference is extremely noticeable on this one.
Valve didn’t lie to us. The PS3 version looks great.
PS3 PWNS Xbox 360 version
PS3 version looks sharper and the shading looks more natural.
Look at the TV set in picture 4 and the also check out the signs through the portal on picture 12.
PS3 is the better version.
I won’t be picking up this game though because it’s not my cup-o-tea but I still like reading PS3 vs 360 articles.
I’m always vote unbiased. I give the 360 a win when it deserves it but the PS3 takes this one.
Nice job Valve!
The Ps3 version is sharper in every regard – better AA, better textures and better contrast (although the latter can surely be adjusted in-game, so it doesn’t count as much)
I’m thankful Valve changed their sentiments toward the PS3 and I’m happy to be picking this up for the Easter Weekend coming up – I can barely wait, 7-10 hours(!!!) of killing-free mind tickling gameplay. WINNING!
Clear win for PS3.
I was going to get it on PS3 anyway for the steam support. But this makes it obvious that I made the right choice.
I hope Valve continue this trend and make Steam support and good graphics a regular thing on PS3.
ps3 win here, I grabbed it today, waiting for the pc version to download:)
I have a fridge named lewis, i drive a carrot truck to Peru. Ok i must admit that fis heads are golden.
Have a nice dong.
Playing on the PS3 now. Valve have seriously outdone themselves. Visuals are excellent. The frame rate refuses to drop a single frame and there is zero screen tearing. There is no mandatory installation and loading times are speedy. Props to one of the greatest devs around.
Wow the Cows having a party here :O
but its soooo funny one of the few times they win a h2h they sounds like its the best game ever and when its the box we get bashed ?.. doesnt make sense just take a look on the other h2h im must say said .. but hands down ps3 wins this one
But You do know that we all are playing the exact same f**king game?!!?!
Xbox 360 Level 1 = PS3 Level 1 = PC Level 1
Xbox 360 Level 2 = PS3 Level 2 = PC Level 2
Xbox 360 Level 3 = PS3 Level 3 = PC Level 3
If you need me to keep going, you clearly need help. Geez, what happened to the days when we bashed games because they were actually bad and we didn’t look for every little minuscule difference which effects actual gameplay in no f**king way?
after reading the comments again , all i see ” The xbox version looks like crap whatt its minor diffences and u do even notice them while playing soo please all that fanboy is really getting boring !
you get a longer e-penis or something when your “favored” consoles wins a h2h ?
In true IGN fashion, both the PS3 and the XBOX 360 have exactly the same score in all departments.
Yet a multiplatform game that looks the SAME on both consoles have different scores.
Portal 2 PS3 beats the XBOX 360 not only graphically but in content aswell, and the differences are barely commented on…Can’t spell IGNorant without IGN.
But deluded brendude13, what is the ps3 version doing that the 360 version isn’t doing that warrants a higher score for sony’s creaking machine?
You get crossplay which is pointless to the majority of people and you get a pc version of the same game you’ve just bought on ps3.
It’s a nice extra and all but it shouldn’t put an extra mark on the review score just for that.
The ps3 version because of the extra’s will be the recommended version if you have both machines, but i very much doubt there’s much difference between the 2 versions of the game in question.
Look at all the massive high press reviews for the 360 version on metacritic. It hardly looks like the 360 version has issues now does it?
SHUT UP NOOB.
PS3 WIN 4EVER
You do realise that this H2H will be a PS3 win? Prepare yourself because it will be a shock for you. You are defending xbox like you were a GT5 fanboy. Hell, you are even worse than those deluded Real Carton Simulator fans. Just give up! Xbox IS DEAD! I’m not happy about it but this is the truth. M$ did nothing for 2011 line up to prove me wrong.
I really wish Lense of truth would bring back the voting system so I can dislike your posts so much they get removed.
Wow, a response from Android! ^_^
What is the PS3 version doing that the XBOX 360 isn’t? Graphically or content…ly?
Well first of all, Steam is coming to Playstation 3, not even I am up to scratch with the features that brings but I know it will include cross platform play, so I can play with my PC friends. It will including automatic updates. It will probably include exclusive / free DLC. Not to mention you get to have the game on another platform for free. Overall, I would say the content included in the PS3 version gives a huge boost in replayability and content, both now and in the future.
Wow, I didn’t even get onto graphics. IGN felt the need to rate the XBOX 360 version of Crysis 2 a whole point higher when it came to graphics. According to these screenshots, if IGN used the same scale as they did for Crysis 2, the PS3 version should be rated a whole 2 points higher graphically.
Just pointing out how biased and hypocritical IGN is with their reviews.
I didn’t say the XBOX 360 version has serious issues, it is just far from the definitive version. You are going to have a tough time swinging this one into the XBOX 360′s favour, that’s for sure.
Android. Android. Android…
Don’t you get it? You call people deluded, yet your the one claiming that getting 3 times the features and basically getting 2 games for the price of one, doesn’t warrent that version to be superior to the other. Not to mention, that version obviously looks better here.
As I’ve already stated… I seriously doubt your’e really a 360 fanboy, because what you try to claim is complete and utter ignorance and hypocracy, but seriously bro? The PS3 version is the obvious winner. Theres no possible way of proclaiming the 360 as the winner. Your’e just a fake. Lol…
Maybe the devs were too lazy to optimize their engine for tiling or maybe they couldn’t due to performance issues. My guess is that they chose to give priority to framerate and insure a perfect stability with v-sync on…
Anyway they did a pretty good on the PS3 version. I didn’t expect them to use MLAA.
It’s nice to see 3rd party devs finally using it…
think u misunderstanding what tiling is, and why its used. Developers ideally want to avoid tiling as it takes an image, splits it into two tiles, one of which always has to be kept in the framebuffer, meaning that performance takes a hit.
it really is quite bizarre why its this poor a port in all honesty, as cant say portal 2 looks a particularly graphically intense game, with only lighting and shadows, ssao, and of course the physics being demanding. Its only the lighting and physics which i know the ps3 has distinct advantage over 360 with, due to cpu power advantge, that i can think would have any sort of substantial effect on image quality/frame rate , and result in needing to pare back image quality to achieve better frame rate.
I know tiling is sometimes necessary to keep the games running at full 720p resolution because of edram limitations. And I know performance can take a hit doing so however Portal 2 is not very demanding in the geometry department so I’m surprised they had to compromise the IQ that much…
Maybe they’ve encountered another technical issue and couldn’t follow that route in order to achieve a more stable framerate (with v-sync).
Although the differences are small, the PS3 version is clearly better. Normally I’m of the opinion that most games (despite very small differences) are fantastic regardless of console, but considering the PS3 version ships with Steam support and a free copy of the PC/Mac version of the game, the PS3 is clearly the winner. I only wish I could use my 360 controller on the PS3 since I don’t really like the PS3 controller that much.
Does the game support the PS Move ? I think this is a very good alternative to keyboard and mouse on console.
unfortunately, no. valve has answered that on the PSBlog.
That would be pretty cool.
Dude, android123, stop making excuses. It won’t help your fanboyism! ADMIT DEFEAT!
While I typically buy multi-plat games for the 360 (b/c they’re usually better), I’m glad I chose the PS3 this round. Not only does it look better, but I’m also curious to see how the updates will work via Steam…
PS3 FTW…….AGAIN!!!! Sorry Xbox fanboys (android123). Its over. Now we are seeing the fruits of the the PS3′s superiority. New release after another. Sorry guys………..but it was always going to happen.
now when is that left 4 dead coming out for PS3 so we can see what that has to offer after looking at this and seeing how valve works on the ps3. haha but really they need to make a l4d game for ps3 or even just make a multiplat one
PS3 version looks a bit sharper and 360 looks a bit brighter.
I’m gonna give it to the PS3 on this one.
Make analysis on this game, can not wait
Something people need to consider – while this game is not the most graphically intensive game, what it is is a major improvement on the original Portal. That coupled with the need to render 3 scenes at any given time (camera for the player, 2 cameras for the portals) means that the game cannot employ all these fancy graphical whazzits. This is why I suspect they went with the art direction they did for the first game, and I suspect this is especially why the PS3 version looks better here – the machine can process a lot more than the 360 is capable of.
The only fact we do know for sure is that source engine is well and truly out of date , despite having been updated, but it does seem that there’s a lot of physics and fair bit of lighting , and this fits in with ur points about portals as the ps3 would be more adept at handling this side of things with it’s processing power, but still not sure why an updated but very out of date engine would really be that intensive
