Welcome back for another exciting Head2Head! This week we take a closer look at Konami’s Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Demo for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Clearly, one version has the graphically advantage here but not without a hitch. Come join us as we compare one of the most anticipate game release this year.
We are completely aware that this is a demo, and the final build can change in may ways, but if this is any indication of the final build, the advantage looks pretty obvious. One thing to mention though, the install size for the Xbox was 1.9 GB while the PlayStation 3 version was almost double that, weighing in at 3.5 GB. That being said, was the size differences due to uncompressed audio files, HD Texture Pack, or something else? We will find out for sue when the retail version hit store shelves next month and investigate further with our full analysis. Until then, enjoy the screenshots.

*To ensure color accuracy from the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U output, the PlayStation 3 has RGB Full Range set to "Full" and Super White "On", and the Xbox 360 has Reference Level set to "Expanded" and HDMI Color Space set to "RGB". Our capture card we have captured segments from the AVS HD 709 . Blu-ray, HD DVD, & MP4 Calibration suite.
As you will see, each system matches each other at the SOURCE LEVEL. No contrast or gamma settings are manipulated before or after capturing our images/videos. We strongly believe that these types of corrections are done on a individuals preference and should not be adjusted by us. Finally, washed out looking images that are due to contrast or gamma differences will not have any influence on our final verdicts. Please Read through our F.A.Q page if you have any questions or concerns.*

The file size difference is due to the fmv sequences being uncompressed on the PS3.
ps3 is superior the 360 version looks blury but i thing there is a hair bug in the ps3 version
Code of demo is from early unfinished version – X360 demo is the same as the one that was relased with Zone of the Enders HD Collection last year.
And not “cut out” from finished game.
So not exacly useful for making conclusion about finished game.
@anonim1979
Not entirely true. The Xbox 360 version only looks blurrier than the PS3 counterpart during cutscenes, and this is entirely due the difference in compression quality the videos (every non-interactive cutscene is undoubtedly a pre-rendered video.) The videos of the Xbox 360 version were compressed at lower bitrate in other for them all to fit into the limited storage space of the DVD. The retail version is more than likely going to use the same set of videos so there certainly isn’t going to be any improvement there. On the bright side though, at least they weren’t encoded with Bink…
Well they had to *fit* those FMV on dics with ZotE Collection + Risng Demo. So they somewhat overcompressed.
If they will have more free space (and they probably will) on Rising DVD we might see higher quality ones IF they don’t go easy way…
The PS3 defo has the graphical advantage judging by these shots. Much sharper. Usually the other way around!!! Not enough to give it a win however. Performance matters.
These ”blurry” parts are pre-rendered cutscenes btw.
Do I need to remind you that this is a screenshot comparison, not a performance analysis? It’s always like this, a certain console is ahead in graphics but doesn’t get a vote because there is yet to be released a performance analysis. Do these comparisons even matter then? People that brush aside data that they find unfavorable to them are biased fanboys, no way around that.
ummm, do I need to remind you to read other peoples comments correctly before making yourself look like an idiot.
If you re-read what I said, it translates to “these graphical differences are not enough to garner a win. It all comes down to performance”
“These ”blurry” parts are pre-rendered cutscenes btw.”
Speaking of “brushing aside data”, you do realise that not all the blurry shots are cutscenes? Some are but not all.
Just accept it.
wow LOL. Sony better release that PS4 ASAP…because the PS3 just ain’t cutting it anymore. Xbox wins once again.
Seriously?
Nah.. He is an xbot troll. He is suffering for yet another great win for the PS3.
Don’t feed the troll, guys.
^THIS!
LoT: “was the size differences due to uncompressed audio files, HD Texture Pack, or something else?”
All of the above.
I totally agree; this is another epic 360 win. I don’t even need to look at anything console-wise, since it’s clear that the 360 is the best console ever. Textures are way sharper on the 360 images, anyone who says otherwise is just jealous that us 360 owners plays Alan Wake in full 520p resolution. Also, it’s ridiculous of PS3 owners to claim that games like Dead Space 3 sounds better in uncompressed 7.1 PCM, when the 360s compressed Dolby 5.1 is way better. Hah, once again the 360 shows that it’s the best choice. In the future, all games will be made for the next Xbox, and then ported to the inferior PlayStation. We don’t need stupid titles like Killzone, Uncharted, The Last Of Us, and God Of War, because they all feature really muddy-looking textures unlike anything on the 360. I only need to mention the insanely sharp-looking Alan Wake — another exclusive 360 title that PS3 owners will never get to play.
successful troll is successful. That made me lol.
The difference in size is mostly down to the PS3 version having higher quality cutscene videos. During gameplay though, both versions of the game are, for most parts, identical to one another. I personally would pick the PS3 version for the higher quality of its videos.
Not quite. if you notice the file size on X360 i just below the 2GB limit for XBL. That to me means that they had to compress everything that could be compressed to stay inside the boundaries. And still then it is quite scary that a small demo is 30% of the DVD capacity. The X360 is showing its limits and thanks god soon we should get a rid of it with the Next Box. No more multiplatform games dumbed down to fit in that outdated since birth POS.
That’s exactly the point Bloodios made. The FMV is compressed hence a difference in quality and file size.
This shows the true drawback to using outdated DVD tech. The ps3 version looks a fair bit sharper and the textures are of a much higher quality. In terms of in-game graphics, from what I can tell the ps3 has higher terrain textures though there seems to be some sort of hair glitch. The post-processing effects do seem to be more abundant on the ps3 as you can see in the closeup of they eye emitting the red lens flair to a much greater extent on this console.
Haha! What a surprise, PS3 is winner! After all, this is made for it originally. But It does look good on both systems.
Actually I was hoping for Wii U version to be announced too. But PS3 version is waiting for me.
But, as collecting purposes I’m going to buy both versions. And both versions of Limited Edition. US and UK version.
Try to enjoy this game, what ever system you use.
In-game 360 wins
360 version has screen tearing and low quality FMV. lol
PS3 is the winner here.
Hey…stop spreading lies. Everyone knows the PS3 is an inferior product.
Is that why the PS3 officially passed the 360′s lifetime shipment numbers? :3
Lens should make it clear when a screenshot is CG/FMV/Pre-rendered video but they never do.
I think it will be like Vanquish. PS3 fully v-synched while 360 due to soft v-sync will be slightly more responsive but tears. Looks like 360 will have compressed video too. Everything else though is practially a tie. DF says 360 has slightly better LOD but I personally haven’t seen any evidence of that.
It’s my personal belief in action games where controller response is key, developers should allow v-sync to be turned off as it increases lag which for the hardcore dedicated types is a hindrance.
ps3 version is supperior.
Metal Gear = PlayStation. Period.
Having played both demo versions multiple times I can confidently say there is virtually no difference between the 360 and PS3 graphics wise. The PS3 has a marginal advantage when viewing cinematics because the files are uncompressed whereas on the 360 I’m assuming they will be compressed upon release. I’m also guessing the 360 version will have multiple discs, whereas the ps3 will only have 1 bluray. However the ps3 has a major flaw (in my opinion), the controller. I’ve never been a fan of the controller, and I often find my hand cramping after spending just an hour or 2 with it. On the other hand, the 360 controller is very comfortable and I’ve never had any issues with it. During cinematics I’ve noticed that the ps3 looks sharper in certain frames, but overall it is nearly identical. I also noticed the PS3 version has a see-through hair glitch, not really sure why. I think I’ll buy the 360 version unless the ps3 one ships with Japanese voice overs.
Playstation kicks xbox arse again
If you own both systems I suggest you wait for the game analysis before purchasing this game.
I played the demo on both systems and found the 360 had way less bugs then the PS3 version.
Does anyone recall Bayonetta on PS3? Horrible when compared to the 360 version and it’s from the same developer.
This is not a Kojima game. Kojima just made the story and cut scenes. This is a Platinum game and they are more comfortable developing on a 360 just look at their previous games.
Ok,there is gonna be fanboyism either way.I have had both consoles. Most games look better on the 360.Hence better dev kit!Easier to program for. That was back between 2006 – current. Now if ps3 is programmed for first it can have a slight advantage sometimes.!Full or fmv looks sharper on the ps3 and killzone 3 uncharted 2 and 3 are great games.Alan wake a great game.Im going for content and releases and so on this is where xbl vs psn shows.Hands down xbl destroys psn.
LOL i really like reading what these nerds come here to say to defend the Shitbox version xD,you come here saying that the code of xbox demo is from early unfinished version ripped from ZoE HD collection…well..let me tell you that the PS3 demo is exactly the same size as the demo on ZoE HD collection xD so…its the same as the xbox version hehehe
UPDATE:
I recently had the opportunity to Play and Compare BOTH the PS3 & XBOX 360 Demos. Each version was Downloaded to the HDDs of each console, and the settings on the consoles and HDMI1 & 2 equalized as best possible. Here’s my definitive verdict on the differences between both:
1.) The reason the PS3 Demo of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is larger (file size), is because the PS3 version has (uncompressed) HD cutscenes, while the XBOX 360 version features (compressed) Stanard Definition cutscenes. When compared, the difference is positively jarring; with the PS3′s cutscenes looking almost indistinguishable from the in game graphics, while cutscenes on the XBOX 360 are blurry and washed out. Make no mistake; the PS3 version is vastely superior in this regard, and the difference IS very jarring.
2.) The XBOX 360 version is upscaled to 1080p, while the PS3 version is 720p (with no available up scaling). While this usually means the XBOX 360 versions is sharper – in this case, that isn’t so!? The PS3 version is actually ‘sharper” and has its HUD icons in the exact places as the XBOX 360 edition. The XBOX 360 is smoother (with less jaggies) thanks to the up scaling process of the XBOX 360 blurring the image ever so slightly. This usually means the 360 editions gameplay and menus, are somehow more defined while yet somewhat softer. The PS3 by contrast is much rougher and its gameplay a bit too harsh and sharp – to the point that I had to lower the sharpness setting on my tv to compensate and smooth the image. Doing this however, I was able to mimic the smoothing effect found in the XBOX 360 version – while maintaining the crisper level of detail of the PS3s version.
3.) The XBOX 360 and PS3 Demos feature different shadow effects – and god lighting that is slightly placed differently. For example; The PS3 version features Higher Resolution shadow mapping for Raiden – this is noticeable, as raidens shadows are more detailed and blockier in the PS3, while in the XBOX 360 his shadows are fuzzier and tend to dither. In constrast however, environmental objects (such as the casting of a bridge, or the branches of a palm tree) are much higher resolution and noticeable detailed in the XBOX 360 version – while the same shadows as lumps of pixelated shadow that resemble the outline of the object casting them on the PS3.
4.) The XBOX 360 version of Metal Gear Rising is noticeable brighter and has more vibrant colors. The PS3 version by the same merit, is very dark (even with the PS3s color gamut set to limited), and colors are actually much darker and prominate – the games palette is clearly ‘different’ between the too, as this isn’t just a result of rendering or RGB source inconsistencies. The argument now becomes “which is better: Bolder or Brighter.”
5.) Another Big difference in the too, is the Framerates of the too versions. In practice the XBOX 360 version actually runs a step faster than the PS3 version, both in Gameplay AND in Cutsceens. Rangeing Between 4-10 fps faster than the PS3 version. This gives the sensation while playing of a more responsive camera and slightly more fluid motion in the movie scenes. Alternatively, The PS3 version seems to run smoothly at the same 30fps regardless of scenes or how crowded the screen gets. It IS slower than the XBOX 360 most the time; however this can easily be explained by hinting to the fact that the PS3 version seems to have V-SYNC ‘ON’, while the XBOX 360 does not. I assume the developers felt that the XBOX 360 could handle the game engine better (as it did with Bayonetta) and they where for the most part ‘correct’: Metal Gear Rising runs almost entirely at 40 fps on the XBOX 360 with no drops in fps in my testing, and little to no screen-tearing. HOWEVER, it should be pointed out that I did encounter an instance of ever so slight screen tearing at one point in the demo. How will this reflect in the final product, I’d love to see – but one thing IS certain; thanks to the PS3 versions V-SYNC, screen tearing is almost guaranteed not to occur in the final product on the PS3.
7.) When installed on the HDD both versions loaded at almost identical speeds. One would assume that if the PS3s final version features a maditory (or optional) install that it will load faster than the XBOX 360 version, and equal to the XBOX 360 version installed on its HDD. However, if the PS3 version does not feature the option to install on a HDD, then it would make sense that the XBOX 360 running off a HDD would load faster.
8.) The controls on each version are primarily identical, sept for a mirroring of the RB/LB and RT/LT actions on the XBOX 360 version – which is pretty common on cross platform releases these days (Dead Space 3 being a prime example). I personally felt however that the Dual Shock 3 lends itself better to the action, and its pressure sensitive buttons feel more responsive and its Right Analoge stick actually appears to be more sensitive to when in the Slowmo sword cutting mode.
9.) The sound in both games is Dolby Digital (sorry no DTS on PS3), but it should be noted that the PS3 version seems to have the loudest Highs, and much louder a effects. The XBOX 360 more evenly distributes the sound and is a bit crisper, if less intense.
10.) finally I’d like to share a consern I have with the PS3 version if the Metal Gear Rising Demo: The noticeable light artifacting in certain areas and the random glitches that I could not replicate in the XBOX 360 version.
I noticed that the white cat that strolls across the beach in beginning of the demo would often freeze either on the beach or in the water and simply never never move again. I also noticed that some objects, such as barrels, would sometimes randomly fail to detect the slashes of my sword, and instead fly or roll across the screen, and would often fall through the floor? I tested this many times and it occurred not terrible frequently, but enough times to consern me about the issue remaining in a retail version. And lighting artifacts, such as a cascadeing, dithering, shadowy mesh effect is blatantly visible on the bridge to your right as soon as you land on the beach at the very beginning of the PS3 demo – a artifact (among many) not present in the XBOX 360 demo.
———————————
CONCLUSION: Both games have strengths and weaknesses. The XBOX 360 version is smoother, faster, and much brighter and colorful. It also features less artifacting and runs without a hitch.
The PS3 version has bugs and lighting issues, but its Framerates is locked which guarantees no frame-tearing, the controls are more responsive, the game is sharper (if to a fault), the colors are more intense but also a wee bit too dark. The only real big argument for one over the other, being that the PS3 version has HD cutscenes, and the XBOX 360 does not. Considering how many cutscenes PLATINUM Games cramed into bayonnetta, and Metal Gears History of heavily relying on them to carry the brunt of the gameplay and story; this may be the silver bullet in the argument of which system to buy Metal Gear Rising: Recengeance for.

Awesome breakdown Chris, thanks for that! So overall, Kojima Productions/Platinum Games knows their talents really well. PS3 = better visual rendering. 360 = better performance handling. If you own both consoles, it DOES NOT matter which you go for. I’m gonna go with the PS3 ver. for the trophies and better grip on the DualShock 3 (those and the previous MGS titles I have on PS1 and PS2).
Final version of both ps3 sharper cut seens . Both games look identical both are v sync but xbox has as much as a 10 fps lead which has got to be a winner who cares about cut seens now days .
