Holy crap. They are identical!!! Nice job From Software!!!
Agreed!
I LOVE ties!
Makes my problems of choosing which platform to get this game that much easier!
Too bad it’s just head-2-head on the graphics dept.
Can’t wait to see how they perform!
UPDATE:
Digital Foundry did a comparison:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-dark-souls-face-off?page=2
GRAPHICS: TIE
Image quality on both platforms is ostensibly identical, while performance is an apples and pears situation. Neither the 360 or PS3 version can definitively claim to have an absolute edge here.
It appears a post-processing filter running on the PS3 version is affecting the clarity of certain text elements, such as the Estus Flask notification in the bottom-left of the screen. As with most filters working indiscriminately across the whole frame, text and HUD elements often get caught in the line of fire, although it really only seems to have affected the text in this case. On very close zoom, this filter is also the likely cause of a very subtle softening to the definition of distant textures not evident on 360. These are nitpicks more than anything, and are only evident when closely scrutinized next to images of the rival version.
PERFORMANCE: 360
Interestingly, destroying multiple crates or urns – a physics-based task which should favour the PS3′s more powerful CPU – incurs frame-rate drops down to 25FPS, while, the 360 version typically gets away unscathed.
During the boss fight demonstrated in the video below, however, destruction physics on the asylum columns have a dramatic impact on both consoles, with the PS3 version even nose-diving down to 10FPS for a spell. On the flip-side, Microsoft’s console appears to have its own specific issue with the volumetric fog used in the doorway barriers, which is unusual given that this should be handled by its more proficient GPU.
Dark Souls’ liability to drop frames in this fashion is made evident much earlier on, with the combination of multiple assailing enemies and a fire-breathing wyvern in one sequence consistently causing drops to under 10FPS on both consoles. Also considerable is the way each version takes a jarring hit during actions involving particle effects, such as lighting bonfires, exploding fire bombs, and bleeding out from a series of arrow strikes, with the PS3 shedding a few more frames in like-for-like cases.
FEATURES: PS3
As a side note, it’s worth pointing out that the 360′s native party chat feature is blocked during gameplay. Much like in Demon’s Souls, both versions of Dark Souls deliberately eschew any direct communication in favour of its own messaging system, which offers pre-defined phrases This is a design choice that, as with the anonymous nature of its co-op play, is set in place to enforce a strictly singular experience, and is unlikely to be rescinded through an upcoming patch. It’s a curious choice that deprives the 360 version of what some may see as a default advantage.
How is features a PS3 win? It’s a tie because the developers deliberately blocked party chat on 360.
Performance is not a 360 win. I read the DF face off too.
They both have pros and cons.
The two versions of the game are an almost perfect match.
1st let me say that i respect eurogamer just as lens of truth, and i don’t know if the person responsible for writing that eurogamer article is a developer or not. let me analyze this statement–”Interestingly, destroying multiple crates or urns – a physics-based task which should favour the PS3′s more powerful CPU – incurs frame-rate drops down to 25FPS, while, the 360 version typically gets away unscathed”.
this is where this writer is wrong, probably because he’s not a developer. the triple, dual threaded, general-purpose core processor of the 360 is actually better suited for ai and physics(collision detection, firing a gun, calculating the path of a projectile, ball, or any object; and any types of algorithmic based physics). example halo reach. halo reach may not have the best graphics compared to other 360 titles or ps3 titles (uncharted, killzone, god of war, metal gear solid), but i dare any ps3 title pack as much individually intelligent ai (not dynasty warrior, god of war, dante’s inferno type ai or any games like them that just use a cluster of 3d characters governed by one or a few ai sources) or physics.
take note of how grenades bounce, how vehicles, bodies, weapons and individual fragments react to an explosion, and just how unpredictable and beautifully random each kills and deaths are. a vehicle or object catapulpted by an explosion can kill someone just as much as a plasma grenade thrown at a gravity launcher can stick someone halfway across the map. even how the warthog drives and reacts to bumps and explosions while being driven to it being lifted off the ground summersaulting many times over in mid air before finally landing on the ground flipping a few more times and lastly ceasing motionless upside down. anyone who plays halo will understand this.
the cell’s advantage is in graphics rendering, helping the rsx gpu with graphics calculations evident in games like UC, KZ, GOW, MGS4. with 360 having 3 dual-threaded general purpose cores to ps3′s 1 general purpose core and 6 spe’s the 360 is better suited for ai and physics where the cell has an edge. this is the reason why he wonders how the cell dips in frame rate in physics-based tasks. if anyone wants to question me i have links that i can provide to back up what i say.
ow my god,360 wins again by far, cant believe it …………lol i’m just kidding. i’ve never seen a tie like this before.but the votes prove that there are more ps3 fanboys then 360′s on this website.come on people, enough is enough.
Ooops, sorry mate. I thumbed you down as a compulsive anti fanboy reaction after reading the first line. Only later I’ve seen you were joking.
Yup, I agree. Apart from slightly blooming differences, when present, the only thing that changes is the frame colour, from red to green. Amazing. I wonder why it shouldn’t be the same for most games. The two consoles in terms of HW are pretty much equivalent.
If this were a PS3 EXCLUSIVE it would look so much better. The 360 is holding mutiplatform games back!
Bull$hit. Demon’s Soul has similar problems (played it and liked it a lot notheless) and is PS3 esclusive.
As much as I prefer the PS3, you are a f*cking retard, you should just gtfo of this site and find yourself a better website to type your bullsh*t in.
This is the fist true tie i’ve actually seen. there is no damn difference what so ever
Now this is one talented developer. No shortcuts, no short comings. If only EA were the same. Sigh… Guess they talk more.
OMFG. i see people still using lot for false comparisons lol, mostly xbox people im guessing that loves to use these comparisons, just to let u all know, lot has been proven false as lots of people who own both consoles like me do comparisons that are lagit, loads of game comparisons on this site are false, ive tested lots of games myself which most of them turned out totally different to these lol
Both this and Demon’s Souls make extensive use of the 4 shoulder buttons for combat. The 360′s bumpers would be questionable I would imagine.
I played the original extensively and picked this up on both consoles (though I haven’t played the PS3 version yet). I’ve had no problem with the bumpers whatsoever to be honest. I HAVE had significant problems with the 360′s crappy d-pad however. When I go to select spells especially, I often change weapons or shields by accident at the same time. About 1 time in 10 since I’ve learned to be very careful with it, but it was a non-issue on the PS3′s superior d-pad.
Things are really looking great for multiplatform these days. Great job From Software.
I want to see the performance.
@
Pornstorestiffi
No you don’t lol. See Eurogamer for the DF analysis . Both versions performances are kinda sucky
I’m scared… xD
Good job to see parity across platforms
Please forgive me, but looks like crap in both consoles, c’mon this game looks like a ps2 one…
Just play the game. You will never find another game this epic and hard with the selection of games we have today. All you get are dumbed down shooters that takes 6-8 hours to complete, with little to no skills required. Man, i miss the omega weapon days!
I hate shooters, i enjoy them very occasionally, im not saying this game is bad, for those that thumbed me down like idiots XD, just saying that for this console generation im surprised that the game looks this bad, and call me a graphic whore if you want, but quality means to polish every aspect, Skyrm will own this game so easily just because of the atmosphere that good visuals can create for the player, just look at those corpses and the 7th pic of the guy with the helmet, geez really looks like ps2, like it or not
I never liked Demons’ Souls graphics either. I guess it’s part of the atmosphere. Too bad I could never get into the game, it just looked ugly and really annoying to me.
Dark Souls doesn’t look good close up. However, once you start exploring dungeons and fight bosses, it’ll start to shine. The Japanese have never been any good at polishing their games (Kojima being an exception) and tend to recycle material a lot but at least they stick to proven formulas most of the time.
DF gave it a tie. 360 had slightly better performance while PS3 had better volumetric fog
Not quite, the volumetric fog didn’t look better on PS3 it’s just that it affected the 360 frame rate.
Oh I see, well it’s still a tie!
So who screwed what up try to get on the site and it says i’ve been banned so I have to go around and go onto a subpage in order to get on here, But yeah this is a clear tie, i’m glad they didn’t screw it up by making it multiplat.
Sorry about that Permafrost, we’ve been getting tons of SPAM lately, along with the site taking some heavy traffic. If any member sees that message it is 100% an error. Bare with us, we’re fixing some problems now.
Don’t feel bad, me and Aaron got the ban hammer as well. This is is getting to be a bit of an annoyance.
It’s all good, kind of caught me off guard.
100% tie.
I can’t even see anything to complain about on either versions.
Looks like they done a great job here.
If the game’s as good as demons souls then count me in.
My oh my, Android, you really seem to be praising the PS3 games these days. See guys, I told you Android wasn’t that bad a guy. Also, this game is better… MUCH BETTER.
@ANDROID123
The game actually runs at a lower resolution than Demon’s Souls one (1024×720 2xMSAA vs 1280×720 no AA).
But overall the game is pretty much a good improvement and it’s better than Demon’s Souls in many way.
First of all Dark Souls is a sandbox completely free roaming, and the game world runs just once without having to load any more during the gameplay.
360 wins here.
In some closeups you can see that the 360-version is (very) slightly sharper than PS3-version.
Can´t wait for the framerate analysis thou.
lol Nope. Not really… at all.
Looks great! I already preordered the limited edition for PS3. Can’t wait for the Head2Head Performance Analysis of Dark Souls!
WTF is this?!
There is no way they’re the same ! What kind of low have you reached now LOT ?!!!
Definetely a tie, great job From Software.Performance will be deciding factor.
An easy tie. I thought it was going to be a PS3 win due to the first game being a PS3 exclusive and the engine being a Sony developed one. Notice the small disc space used. 360 has no compression worries.
I did notice a couple of things (with help from other members on DF). PS3 version has PCF shadows so shadows look less jagged up close while the 360 has slightly more pronounced specular maps. This could be because according to DF the PS3 is employing some kind of post processing filter which can affect clarity somewhat.
Also oddly enough according to DF the 360 version performs better when breaking things (CPU task) while the PS3 performs better in volumetric fog (GPU task).
Demons Soul Framebuffer- 1280 x 720 No AA
Dark Soul Framebuffer- 1024 x 720 2 x MSAA (Both versions) PS3 get’s added post process filter.
Both versions v-synched so no screen tear but choppy frame rate at times.
i love how you have a negative rating when you have the best and most technical comment here. Nice job : P
Demon’s Souls had frame rate issues as well when breaking things. They didn’t bother much, though. Actually they gave more time to watch out where we were ending!!
As long as it is screen tearing free I am happy. I simply can’t stand the tearing.
Big respects to Software for making this near identical.
And that’s BIG. Like this Big….
…imagine I’m holding my arms apart.
I’m imaging the five dollar footlong taunt.
I found the PS3 version to have a tad sharper textures in some close sections… but to be honest, why nit pick?.. if you have time to nit pick when a game is pretty much the same on both platforms then you cant enjoy games, can you?..
Holy sh*t… That is by far the most visually equal multiplatform game that I’ve seen.
If this isn’t a tie. Maybe you are just a fanboy or need to get your eyes checked
Es bueno saber que se realizan trabajos tan buenos como estos.
Así es como deberían ser los multiconsola y creo que todos esperamos juegos de la misma calidad en ambas plataformas.
the graphics are so identical they look like the same screen grab. the only difference I could see was a little more bloom on the spirit glow on the PS3 version! Closest I have seen yet. Look out LOT, you might be out of a job!!!!!! lulz, just jks.
SAMCHEZ77 you always see a ps3 advantage in ANY game. Grow up. This site dont have room for fanboys. Not anymore. Its a TIE in graphics and win in perfomance by xbox (source: df)
No, it’s not a win in performance for xbox (source: df).
@mauro
no? ps3 drop to 10fps in some “heavy” areas.
anyway I will wait for LOT full H2H to judge and buy the game.
@MARCIO
PS3 drops when you brake some objects, XBox 360 drops when volumetric effects and fire effects are in place.
They both drop badly in very crowded situations. This is it.
The two versions are in fact a match.
Marcio, calling ME a fanboy and then hitting back with an “XBox Wins comment” ohhhhhh the hypocrisy. And to clarify things a little and put you in your place, I actually said they look identical. I noticed a difference with the spirit bloom, but said DIFFERENCE!!!! Not improvement. Wake up kid. And FYI, thia site is ALL ABOUT the fanboy. The way we like it.
FIY I will not waste my time reading your commentary =)
But remmember, dont brake any objects when playing ^^
It’s nice to see parity becoming commonplace…I’m going with the PS3 version for the superior sound.
Yeah me too, when you have a decent 7.1 surround system like i do, then you realise how important quality sound is, and how much it adds too and improves the gaming experience. I could never go back to just “stereo”!!
lulz. Why would anyone thumbs down that comment??? Its fact pure and simple. Play Dead Space 2 with the sound through your T.V. then play it on a 7.1 surround system. Then you’ll see what I mean Xbot.
The xbox does also support surround in every game. Can’t see why this comment should be directed at them.
XBox support basic 5.1 surround.
It does not support uncommpressed audio, DTS, 7.1.
So, that’s why he directed the comment to xbox fanboys.
Mauro,
Samchez said 2 channel tv stereo sound as if the 360 doesn’t support 5.1 surround sound. In fact 360 supports 5.1 Dolby Digital and 5.1 WMA Pro. And anyway there’s no sound compression in this game for the 360 as it uses only about 4GB of data so the difference in quality would be small unless you have a really good set up to take full advantage of LPCM.
Anyway as default for virtually every game PS3 will have better sound options and quality while 360 get’s cross chat and custom soundtrack. It kind of evens itself out.
How can cross-game chat compare with superior audio?
Also, this game has no cross-game chat enabled, so I really can’t see your point.
And speaking of audio compression: it doesn’t matter how much space the game is going to use, because XBox 360 cannot output uncompressed audio. This is due to both technical and copyright issues.
Don’t get me wrong: when I play with my 360 I hear a really good audio, no doubt about it. It’s just that PS3 has more choices and also outputs a more polished and defined sound.
I didn’t mean the Xbox only has 2 or 2.1 channels. I am very aware of the Xbox’s sound capabilites, although inferior. I was merely stating the importance and difference good sound in a game makes compared to standard 2 speakers on your average telly or stereo. Thats all. 7.1 DTS is amazing. Custom soundtracks are lame. I used to do that with the PS1. Got old real quick.
if we are going to make a big deal about better sound for the ps3 then we should make a big deal about most xbox 360 games having faster load times when you install the game all the way which LOT does not take into account when doing their head2head. You know, just trying to be fair and everything…not a fanboy.
@Lens of Truth
I’m a bit curious about the 7th and 8th screenshot (on the first page). It seems that the edges of the shadows in the PS3 version have this soft blur which made them look a bit more appealing than the the Xbox 360 counterparts, which is sharper and more jagged. Now what I found strange is that the way the shadows in the Xbox 360 version are filtered seems to bear a strong resemblance to the PS3′s PCF method. So what happened there, did you guys got the screenshots mixed up, because usually, it’s the other way (Xbox 360 version has softer edges, while the PS3 version is sharp and jagged).
there are shadows? no, seriously, i really never noticed o_o
It’s impressively close. From Software did a spectacular job on this game.
Also, I can’t access the homepage because I’m ‘banned’ – why is this? I’m assuming I’m not banned because I’m here now and I don’t think I’ve ever broken the rules.
Hey LoT staff. Here’s the Epic conculusion to that LLP trailer that Sony teased not too long ago. You should definitely check this out, and possible post it. One of the best ads ever created.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdWkKKSckNk
Mega Tie, Uber Tie, Ultra Tie, Never have I seen anything that has this much tie in it, This games tie is equal to a 1-1 score, that’s how tie it is.
Now why can’t big name developers pull this quality porting off.
now this is a great cross platforn game. they are both identical. but performance wise, we will see.
Wow this is an extremely close comparison, Tie.
i dunno.. i say ps3 because when you look at the ps3 shot the “ps3″ logo is at the upper left of the screen making it easy to identify what system you’re looking at. with the 360 roll over their icon is on the top right, causing your eye to do a .1 second search.
maybe i’ll get 360 because i wear glasses and could use the ocular exercise
Ahahahahahah best comment posted on this site. +1
Ive never seen a tie so tight!
developing as its best!!
here’s a really tight tie
http://images.cheezburger.com/completestore/2009/12/16/129055009234763056.jpg
I got on here, and noticed the Dark Souls Head2Head. I was honestly expecting the PS3 to be a slight winner here.
I never curse or anything, it’s against my moral code and religion to do such a thing, but hot damn. This is the utmost identical game I have seen since Dead Space 2. This might actually be better. This is how multiplatforms graphics should be done. If they both perform well, then mother of god.
PS3 got screwed it could have been so much better with all that blu ray space and its the same as ONE xbox DVD. Oh well im probably getting it on 360 anyway since my bro got it for PS3 : P
And yeah i am having a hard time in Demons Souls, to anyone that has played is this one easier in any way, or at least more accessible. I am totally ready to die either way
Demon’s Souls didn’t utilized all of the BD’s storage capacity either. As matter fact, the game’s size was even well within the old 6.8GB limit of the Xbox 360 DVD.
Although if Dark Souls was another PS3 exclusive, I think From Software certainly would’ve been able to smooth out the performance, and utilized the extra time to further optimize the game. And even though the result wasn’t bad, I still think the choice of AA for this game wasn’t a wise one, seeing how 2xMSAA consumes quite a lot resources (definitely not advantageous for PS3 version.) MLAA would have been a much better choice, as having it implemented instead of 2xMSAA would have benefited both the game’s graphics and performance. I would have also complain about the sub-HD resolution, but seeing as the game’s textures actually seems more refined than its predecessor’s, perhaps the choice wasn’t really a bad one. Beside, performance also could be benefited from the sub-HD resolution.
Also, perhaps an option to disengage V-sync and let the screen tears when performance is overstressed would have been nice. Now, normally I’ll try to avoid screen-tears as much as possible, but if I have to choose between that and having game running at less than 10fps, then I’ll gladly choose it.
They are equal in graphics. Tie. But performance is better on 360 but trust me, this game might have the worst framerate I´ve experienced on both ps3 and 360. Btw , Lens of Truth, give us your head to head of RAGE now because the game releases tomorrow in Europe and I don´t want to buy the worst version.
The worse version of Rage so far is the PC one.
When they’ll have sorted out graphic drivers issues and streaming bugs then PC version will be the best… probably.
Damn!! practically identical if only every multi-platform release looked this close it would go a long way in stamping out stupid fanboyism..
If the monitor was untouced ie, contrast, color brightness etc, the X wins by a scratch. Where the corpse is laying on the dungeon floor, the red in the rib cage is a little more so on the Xbox than the PS3. In the corners of some of the shots, the PS3 Version is a little more pronounced than the Xbox which looks a little less or washed. This is a too close to call, but if you were to hold a gun to my head, I’d flip a coin.
Can’t notice any diffrence!Just like dead space 2 and Dante!
I friggin’ love how this game looks but the fact that it’s incredibly retarded hard to play makes me not even wanna touch it. A game can be hard but this game, like the first, just likes to punish you. Certain developers in certain countries…like to hurt players, and those players take it, gladly, in the butt.
But, I might take it right in the butt just to see the hot visuals. Pooo!
but… it hurts so good o_o
the PS3 version looks ever so slightly better. what are the screen tearing and framerate comparisons though?
Well I say its a tie in performance cause
From DF:
“During the boss fight demonstrated in the video below, however, destruction physics on the asylum columns have a dramatic impact on both consoles, with the PS3 version even nose-diving down to 10 FPS for a spell.”
DF,DOES NOT mention the frame rate for Xbox when doing a spell. And finally for conclusion in DF:
“In the final conclusion, image quality on both platforms is ostensibly identical, while performance is an apples and pears situation. Neither the 360 or PS3 version can definitively claim to have an absolute edge here”
If anyone even watches the videos from DF, the frame rates are rather…well, really apples and pears…
Whatever the case, I am enjoying my Dark Souls
It’s also worth mentioned that the PS3 multiplayer component is populated by both US and Japanese markets.
Given that a fair amount of the games ambience comes from the multiplayer functionality, it might be worth reviewing sales figures on both consoles (and both markets) to see if there is a significant change in online player base.
Please LOT Staff come up with the analyse of Dark Souls we’re waiting for it.
thanks.
LOLZ. PS3 fanboys fail.
Yet again. Their theory that this multiplatform will run better on PS3 b/c of the Blu Ray, or not compressed, and b/c it was made for PS3 therefore cant run on 360… yet fails again. Its the same.
I guess they never learn? Look at ALL these comparisons, 360 either does the same or better. Freaking learn.
Playing this game on both consoles for a couple of months there is a clear winner in my mind. Performance/Tie, Graphics/PS3. Camera/360. I’d rather play it on the 360, but it appears more detailed, graphically, on my Playstation3. Go figure.
