So which BETA comes out on top in the performance department?
Welcome back for another exciting Head2Head. Today we take two exclusive giants and compare their performance differences. Keep in mind, these are both BETA versions and we are fully aware that many things might change when they hit store shelves this Fall. Nonetheless, we just couldn’t resist. We’ve been waiting for this a long time and we’re really excited to see results, aren’t you just a tad bit interested? So stick around while we put Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and Gears of war 3 under our lens.
Below are the results of our analysis. As you can see by the video, both games ran close to 30 FPS. Subsequently though, Uncharted 3 did appear to dip in the low 20′s at some points in the video. On the flip side, Gears 3′s frame rate was much more consistent, managing to stay closer to that 30 FPS mark, but not with out a hitch; when it comes to screen tearing, it’s a completely different story. Its obvious which version had less tearing. The data provided showed that Uncharted 3 had almost zero screen tearing while the Gears of War 3 screen tore almost 5 percent of the time. Some pretty big differences if you ask us. Check out the stats below.

Again, we know these are just BETA demos, and we can definitely except to see many updates before these two get released. We are huge fans of both the Uncharted and Gears of War series, and each BETA has blown our expectations out of the water. We hope you enjoyed watching this as much as we did making it, and make sure to check back when both games are released for some more “odd-ball” Head2Head fun.

You LOT guys must enjoy baiting flame wars like this, lol. Interesting comparison though. Surprised at the screen tearing on Gears. Seems Uncharted has no screen tearing at all, but a slightly lower frame rate. Both of those can easily be tweaked by release time.

the site isnt called “lensofxbox360.com” or “lensofps3.com” this is what they do. some people just take it wrong and go crazy with it. i mean, single console owners do.. and i think they are being compared because they are the most anticipated games this year for each system (not hard to come up with that mystery)

Well the tearing will obviously be corrected before release on gears but the detail of gears’ environments was much higher, the amount of alpha was much higher, the amount of polys on the screen was much highter, I mean gears is just SUPERIOR here. Of course there wasn’t any tearing on uc3 because of the really low framerates and dumbed now effects that I just mentioned. Face it. 360 could run UC3 at 60 fps easily but ps3 would choke down to 10-15 fps trying to run Gears.
textures? Uncharted 3 has the best textures on console IMO. UC2 would be top 3 still IMO again. Gears 3 does look amazing, glad to see an exclusive on the xbox side that competes now. last time that happened was in 2006 lol, when the little brother was born. hehehehe, good times
Maybe if UC3 was being run in 360p for Xbox. How many exclusives on xbox are sub-HD?? Quite a bit. Now, how many are sub-HD for Ps3? None.
However, I must say, I cant wait for Gears 3. So far it looks amazing, as does Uncharted 3

actually resistance 3 is sub-hd, rachet and clank crack in time, rdr and gta4 on ps3. while the 360 versions are 1280×720 full hd.
also not all ps3 games support 1080p upscaling such as god of war 3, majority capcom games.
Dude naughty dog chose ps3 over xbox for a reason. dont get me wrong i love gears playin it since 06 and cant wait for gow3 but the clearly ask “which game PERFORMS better” not graphics or detail and as of right now its a tie with no frame dops but tearing and vice versa for uncharted. but i can tell you right now the 360 could not run uncharted no less at 60fps thats rediculous. but you are probably right when you say ps3 cant run gears, i’ll agree with that. but thats why the devs make it a console exclusive and not multiplat because those devs (epic and naughty dog) know how to work there games on the single console their games are on. imagine if you handed epic the story and writing for uncharted and handed naughty dog the story and writing for gow, it would be completely different and i dont think either game would be as ground breaking as they are today. all im saying is the devs chose their console and wanted it exclusive for a reason

I’m suprised that you were suprised by screen tearing in gears of war 3… because the first two had plenty of it, so I don’t see why it’s a suprise. Uncharted 1 had lots of screen tearing as well, but they completley fixed that with uncharted 2, and apparently 3 has none either. Not flaming just mentioning that the first two gears had plenty of screen tearing so it’s not a suprise.
gears 3 looks much more fun, with a lot more effects going on. The movement of characters also seem more fluid and natural, whereas in uncharted3, all the characters assume the same stiff position when shooting and look kinda awkward.
The movement animations look a lot more fluid in uncharted though. I’m not a big fan of the hunchback slow jog movement in gears.
open ur eyes, AINSLEY. I hope naughty dog corrects the character animation in multiplayer, it looks awful compared to uncharted 2′s character animation in multiplayer.
Uc2 also droped frames and tore in the beta , so expect this to be tidied up tbh, and I’d imagine gears 3 will be ok come release date too. Not sure on release of gears 3 , I think it’s august , and beta is month old at least, so they will minimise tearing, and uc3 not out till October or summat , so good few months left to amend those dropped frames.
That’s interesting because I didn’t notice any tearing in the UC3 beta… and let me tell you, I am the first person to notice this sort of thing. I specifically look everywhere for it, and I saw none, although I am prepared to admit that maybe I missed a spot, but I highly doubt the final release will have any at all, since they completley obliterated screen tearing for uncharted 2. By the way, anyone who uses the word fanboy I consider a biased person and always disregard their opnion. I can’t wait for both of these games by the way, I prefer UC3 though, I only like gears for the campaign single player and co op… the player vs. player in gears 1 and 2 were horrific.

What happened on that last uncharted clip?
The whole thing was running at around 20fps, but it didn’t seem all that different form the previous 2, which were near perfect 30fps.
It’s a bug. Happens at completely random times. The beta locks up your system very frequently as well. =\
If it’s a bug it really shouldn’t be included in the analysis, since it will definitely be fixed once the game comes out.
It didn’t seem like a bug since there was a lot going on in the screen. Explosions and shooting everywhere.
it was fixed on day one of the beta at like 1 in the morning. haven’t had a hiccup on the beta since.

But IMO I just had more fun with the Gears beta. With so much time to polish, it’s only logical they’ll be tweaked by release. Same with UC3′s framerate.
1) Beta so yeah…Both games are from devs who know their hardware better than any other Dev….Naughty Dog masters the PS3 like no one else and Epic is somehow pushing the 360.
Probably both will be running better than their Beta Versions
BUT at the End > Uncharted 3 will win cause of more power and Naughty Dog has a lot more time left.Uncharted 3 is already yet looking better and has 2 months more time till releaseday than GoW3

As far as multiplayer goes.
The single player will be interesting though, they’ve had so long to work on gears 3 and i’m expecting an epic campaign with stunning bosses aplenty being thrown at you.
Uncharted 3 will no doubt be great in single player as well, they might have to scale back some detail though as the framerate struggles at 18fps in the final clip.
I’m sure they’ll get it up to 19fps by the time the retail release comes around lol.
Just get both consoles and you’ll know what you have been missing.

I think the framerate hicup in Un3 was a bug (a fluke) because I’ve been playing the beta and I haven’t seen anything like that. It’s really smooth 100% of the time.
Also, why did LOT say “almost zero screen tearing” about Uncharted 3. It’s Triple-Buffered V-sync… it should have NO screen tearing. “Almost” is not the same as “always”.
something is definitely awry , as I didnt see framerate drop from 30 for 3 clips, or a single screen tear, then it couldnt get above that 20 mark in clip 4,even when there was nothing going on , on screen. Very strange. id have assumed some sort of error of some kind, and done another analysis. I never saw framerate drop once in my playthrough

Good one, Android…though we both know that clip seems might suspicious compared to the smoother clips with similar visual stressors(explosions, gunshots, numerous players,etc). If we disqualify that clip, U3 vastly outperforms Gears 3.
Gears 3 Beta seems to have a framerate hovering around 25 FPS during firefights with screen tearing present at 11 percent. This is a bit rough…but it’s a beta and all .
Uncharted 3 (minus clip 4) has a rock-solid 30 FPS with ZERO screen tearing.

I’ll just buy both. These are 2 franchises that can’t be missed out on.
Why would they leave out Trenches and Oldtown when they are graphically leaps and bounds ahead of Checkout and Thrashball? LOT even said themselves those maps were by far the best looking. I just don’t want a comparison of the worst looking Gears 3 maps and then everybody thinking it holds true for every section of the game.
Why doesn’t LOT do Uncharted 3 co-op gameplay versus Gears 3 co-op horde mode?
This will be Killzone 3 vs Crysis 2 all over again. Uncharted 3 will win hands down, although I’m getting Gears 3 also.
Win in what way? If Uncharted 3 manages to edge out Gears of War 3 in graphics than what kind of an accomplishment is that? What is the point of looking better if there isn’t a whole lot going on? It seems kind of odd to me that people can’t put two-and-two together and realize what each game is doing and then compare that to how they look.
Funny how it takes a 3rd party developer to get the best out of the 360 since Microsoft’s 1st party studios fails at doing so.

It was beta tbf, as was uc3, and epic effectively are first party devs as they were involved in development if 360, and ue3 is heavily in favour of 360 architecture.
Both look great IMO , and gears 3 has more alpha effects in play, but no aa, whilst uc3 has a mlaa based alternative AA , but less in way of alpha.
Each to their own in terms of which people thinks look better IMO .
Just watched the video and clip 4 looks like a bug/glitch that made the framerate drop to 20fps. The reason I believe it’s a bug is because the previous clips of the same map were fine.
I’m sure this will get sorted before the game ships. They’ve still got about 3 months of coding to go.
Both games are going to have bugs… they’re betas afterall.
Naughty Dog isn’t going to let their game drop to 20fps (they’re perfectionists).
During my time spent with the beta so far, I haven’t seen the framerate drop at all. (by the way, I can’t visibly see the difference between 29fps and 30fps, but I definitely can tell when a game drops to 20fps).
Both gears and uncharted are some of the best games on the systems, but I have to say, after playing them all through multiple times – Uncharted completely wipes the floor with gears. As for the betas
I’ve only played UC3 and it’s awesome. Gears 1 & 2 weren’t great online at all so I’m not that bothered how it turns out.

Metacritic disagrees with your assessment of the respective series. Gears of War 1 and Gears of War 2 average a higher combined score as opposed to Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2.
I’m just trying to balance out the fanboyism, so forgive my intrusion.
That’s funny, seeing as Uncharted 2 has a higher score than both Gears 1 and 2. Uncharted 1 only has it’s low score simply because the present gaming industry simply doesn’t appreciate single player only titles, and lack of online multiplayer does affect alot of judgment now adays. Regardless, Uncharted 1 was a fantastic game.
It’s funny because I clearly said average combined score. I know shocking right. I stated it that way because I know people would bring up the one-hit wonder Uncharted 2, and then say the entire Uncharted series is higher rated even though it is not.
If I’m honest, uc1 wasn’t a great game, it was very good, but not great, uc2 was polished within an inch of it’s life, and just bettered uc1 in every way.
Gears 1 was much better than 2 as a campaign IMO, the 2nd one just didn’t feel like the game had progressed , and just felt like more of same.
Batman Arkham Asylum is single player…yet it has better score.
Im not saying Uncharted is bad, that’s far from the truth, but that’s not the reason(no multiplayer)
Bioshock and Assassin’s Creed 2……that is all

Your comment is misleading and full of fanboyism. You only mentioned the combined Metacritic score in an attempt to make it seem like the Ge0W series is better. Here are the facts.
- GeoW 1 was rated higher than UC 1.
- UC 2 was rated higher than GeoW 2.
- GeoW 1 was rated higher than GeoW 2. Seems like they headed in the wrong direction as sequels should improve the game.
- UC2 rated higher than UC 1. They headed in the right direction, the sequel improved every aspect of the game.
I thought you were arguing against me for a second until I realized you only elaborated on my point. Gears of War is a higher rated series on average, is it not? The details are obvious and not needed. I was not manipulating nor omitting information and my point still stands.
Gears 1 was great and Gears 2 was a let down. Gears 3 however, has drastically improved from Gears 2. Uncharted 3 on the other hand, at this point in time, is pretty damn close to Uncharted 2. Some aspects are even worse such as the performance, lag, controls, and graphics for the most part.
So with Gears 3 making dramatic improvements over its predecessor and Uncharted 3 making small gains if any, which series is truly heading in the right direction?

I was not arguing your point nor agreeing with it. Just pointing out that there is no merit in weighing an average of only TWO games. GeoW having a better Metacritic average for TWO games means nothing when both of those games are below UC 2′s score. Now if you were weighing an average of a handful of games that would change things since it would give it more merit. Basically, TWO of anything is not enough to gauge overall quality… which is why your comment was misleading.
You are right though… GeoW 1 was a great game. GeoW 2 only scored as high as it did because of the name. GeoW 2 was just more of the same, the only notable difference in story was Dom’s search for his wife. It seems they are continuing this trend in GeoW 3 with Marcus searching for his father.
GeoW 3 does improve upon GeoW 2, but not to the extent you are making it out to be. Take the visual fidelity for example… though improved, by no means is it dramatic. The fact that UC 3 even slightly improves on UC 2 speaks volumes considering UC 2 is better than both GeoW titles. To be honest, visually UC 2 is more appealing than GeoW 3 IMO.
OH CMON!! Both are awesome!! but to me UC3 looks more fun… Didnt play it yet…

Man these are interesting comments. I guess you should get off LOT because they are apparently lying. I mean the endless forum topics, posts, reviews, and Youtube videos of the Uncharted 3 beta dropping frames and freezing are all staged of course. While the almost non-existent performance issues in Gears 3 (Except when people are chucking smoke grenades and blowing each other apart in one area) is just a cover up by Microsoft. It is so clear to me now that your one exaggerated experience reflects the game as a whole. I admire and respect your input.
Give credit where credit is due. The Gears of War 3 beta did maintain better performance, regardless of the reasons why Uncharted 3 could not. We all know this will change so calling foul at this point in time is moronic at best.
The Uncharted 3 Beta had it’s issues Day 1, when the Beta hit North America, and a few million people flooded into it at once. Naughty Dog noticed the problem instantly, and within a day, put out one patch that fixed every issue it had, and now the Beta is running perfectly. You obviously havn’t played it yet, and get your false info from forums, and use it to attack people, hypocrite.
Interesting. So you believe LOT did their entire analysis within a day, and the gameplay videos on Youtube were all also released day 1 as well? The forums on Naughty Dog’s website, while clearly having time stamps, were obviously planted by Microsoft too.

Trust me I’ve played gears probably more then anybody on LoT. I played it competitively on Gamebattles for years! The framerate would drop very bad on trenches and old town to the point that i had to stop playing. Uncharted on the other hand was just unplayable period with it’s freezing and random lock ups until the patch that came out the other day. I’ve said this before and I’m saying it again, Gears 1 is the best gears out of all of them. The rest are no good and not nearly as fun as the first one.

Uncharted has better textures, and much more interactive and cinematic environments. On top of that, the use of the PS3 MLAA is going to ensure that the game looks and runs great. The customization is awesome, the power plays make the matches much more interesting, and the game modes, along with the updated cinema, are all good fun. Naughty Dog did it again, with a very fantastic title.
Gears looks alright, but there are no drastic changes to the competitive multiplayer. It’s still a: pick your oily meathead, grab a shotgun, and run around f*cking everybody up. It’s good fun, but in the end, it’s the same Gears of War we’ve played this gen, in terms of competitive multiplayer.
All that being said, I will give credit to EPIC for Horde 2.0. I’ll probably be playing that alot more than the competitive multiplayer, provided it doesn’t lag, like Horde 1.0 did. Not to mention the single player will probably be pretty decent, given all the time that EPIC has had to develope the game.
It doesn’t sound like you have played the other Gears.Lets just say that you have, you wouldn’t have liked it because it is one of the most skillful shooters this gen. Im not even saying its the best, but definately one of the most skillful. Why do not as many people play gears and killzone, because they cant jump right in and be good at it like COD.
Trust me, i have recommended Gears 1 to many many friends. they go online, get 0 kills and 12 deaths for 3 days staright and quit. it takes about a month to get into. gameplay wise you mentioned? any gears veteran like myself will tell you the second was miles away from the first. much much slower. the third is way faster and takes way less skill. hence why the third is so popular among ppl who never liked the first 2. Besides, the third is way more of a retro lancer then shotgun now. each map plays different. checkout is the shotty map from the beta.
And yes, They showed the maps that had the crapper graphics by far (to the eye). Uncharted 3 has better graphics, but it would have been fairer if they showed the colourful old town
I think Gears 3 muliplayer is better, but cmon guys. This was asking for performance. I voted Uncharted 3, it clearly has better performance. I had pretty much none whatsoever in gears 3, but i had no problems at all with UC3.
People who say Gears gameplay has been the same online since the first is proof they have either never played them, or quit very early because they were asking themselves how they were dying so easily. When i first started gears 1, it took me a good month to be able to hold my own against the majority of players. It is a very skillful game, except for the third which is very fun in its own right. I can also back this up as veteran gears agree, and my friends who sooked off gears 1 and 2, they loved the G3beta and were getting kills.

Yes Dylan! my point exactly, Gears 1 required skill to be good at it. When they added stopping power to gears 2 everybody started using the lancer and hammerburst. That’s when it became not fun anymore. Gears 1 was just so fast paced and the movement was perfect, I hate how they had to go and change it in gears 2 and 3. If they didn’t change the movement i would be playing gears 2 right now!
I should play with you some time. Gears 1 was the best. Gears 3 was very fun. i got like a 3.4 kd overall, no bot farming either. nice to see some fresh meat coming in to the series. Let us veterans wish they never pre-ordered gears 3. HOO-RAH

Don’t forget the Smoke grenade knockdown before the patch. Good thing they saw it was crap and removed it. Like many others have stated GeoW1 still reigns supreme over Geow2+patches. I can’t judge about Geow3 haven’t played the beta, i like to avoid beta’s. I wish they went back to the roots and made Geow3 like GeoW1, based on other comments that’s not gonna happen sadly. I will still enjoy the MP but never as much as i did with Geow1.

If it were like Gears 1, i can gaurantee you that it would have only 50,000 preorders, as opposed to over a million. People are to used to playing games like COD that my mother could play and get used to within the hour (she has never played games)….

Yes, I have played previous Gears titles, and yes I played the multiplayer for both. Gears 1 is one of my favorite games this gen, though I really didn’t care much for Gears 2. The multiplayer for Gears is fun, in my opinion, but it’s nothing that really sticks out. I mostly enjoyed the story. I would have liked Gears 2 because of Horde mode, but it just lagged too much everytime I tried playing with 4 people, and I just got bored.

i agree with your statement 100%, even tho i never played any gears game i do i agree that killzone is requires a great amount of skill, in my opinion killzone is the most hardcore game this gen, why? because the game was just though, that campaign on elite took me 1 month to finish, 2 weeks to get to the last level and one week to finish the last level and radic, the game also requires you to be among the best players in the world for a trophy, but only the hardcore got it, as a killzone veteran killzone 3 really was made more noob friendly like cod (just like gears according with your experiences). i dont like when the words cod and hardcore are in the same statement because cod really is not hard, watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mvBmDvt71E
Yeh, everyone that i played Gears with over the years had great respect for killzone. even those who didn’t also have ps3′s were wanting to save up so they could play it. Just dissapointing when great games don’t sell that much (killzone 2 and 3) because other than the fact not many people knew about the 1st, it wasn’t as simple as shooting first like COD.
I know consoles deserve their exclusives, but i’d like to see killzone go multi-plat, maybe next generation if the xbox upgrades the dvd crap. at least for guerrila, i’d like them to gain more public recognition.
I am very suprised that every fanboy on this page including me has some respect for the other console. I have PS3 only and I have never played any gears, but I’d like to. But if it comes to Uncharted I’ve played two previous games and I love them. I wasn’t playing a lot multiplayer in Unchated 2, but I think it will change with Drake’s Deception.
I play beta a lot and I have to say that it’s way better than Among Thiefs. It still take some time for me to find a match, but it’s worth waiting for it. All in all I can’t wait for UC3, Naughty Dog is one of the best developers in the world now (as Epic Games) and they just can’t fail, I think, that they will even make a better game than we expect.
Uncharted 3 is triple buffered hence no screen tear. It does have latency implications which is not ideal for multiplayer but it’s not too bad. Graphics wise I think this round goes to Gears (not based on this video but on having played both) but I suspect come final release time Uncharted 3 will end up the better looking single player.
mlaa? I’d rather keep the aa method from uc2 because I had no problems with jaggies, but hey if mlaa could make it better then be my guest.
Uncharted and Gears are similar, but Uncharted is altogether the better game.
Uncharted 3 beta is amazing. However, even after the patch I’ve still had it glitch in one match and then turn black during the airplane takeoff cutscene on the airstip, and then after it synced up I’m guessing, the airplane cutscene was just two propellers taking off.
Anyways. The first three minutes of Uncharted 3′s Airstrip while you’re either in the trucks or on the plane is amazing. I like both the Chateau and the Airstrip, but the Airstrip wins overall.
