Head2Head

Update: After some re-analysis of the footage, it seems that our numbers were inaccurate during some terrifically “tear-iffic” scenes.  Special thanks to ps360 for pointing this out!  That being said, the analyzer has been re-tooled and is now better than ever.  The stats and links below have been updated to reflect the new, accurate video and footage.

Head2Head – Bayonetta Analysis: We go Head2Head with Bayonetta for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

This week Play n Trade (Lake Mary), supplied the Lens of Truth with retail versions of Bayonetta. After being scrutinized for the demo, the Lens of Truth team decided to hold off until the final version was out, to ensure a complete analysis. Watch the video and read on for our complete findings.

Graphics: The style of Bayonetta can be summed up as hypersexualized. There’s just no hiding it. Bayonetta doesn’t just happen to be the epitome of every female game character, she embraces it, and even licks it. Textures on characters, such as Bayonetta, look sharper on the Xbox 360. Although the Playstation 3′s texture are of good quality, when comparing to the Xbox 360, you can tell certain aspects (such as normal maps) look better on the latter. Overall, however, the textures look very similar and although better on the Xbox 360, this won’t be terribly distracting. This is because the Playstation 3 has a bigger issue to deal with. When compared, the Playstation 3 has a flatter look. The Xbox 360 pops with color and becomes a very vibrant scene, which compliments the characters and music. Having a flatter look makes everything in the game look dull.

Performance: As mentioned before, Bayonetta‘s publisher, Sega, was heavily criticized for the poor port when the demo was first shown at the trade shows. With Bayonetta under the gun, Sega should have stepped up their efforts to make the game a perfect port. However, the retail version suggests that Sega simply wasn’t interested in saving face. The performances are almost polar. The Xbox 360 runs at up to 60 FPS, while the Playstation 3 runs at only 30. When playing, you can actually feel the difference. The Playstation 3 feels like a more slowly-paced game, where as the Xbox 360 keeps the fast pace, further tying together the hyper-speed to the hyper-style. But keep in mind neither console ran at full frames. Despite having the potential for running at 60 FPS, the Xbox 360 ran more at 46. The Playstation 3 did not fare better. Its potential 30 FPS, actually ran more at 26. The Xbox 360 also had about 13 percent of torn frames, while the Playstation 3 had over 42 percent. The analyzer showed that in the end the Xbox 360 performed better. However, overall this game was a very unstable. And it also showed how different these games were under the hood.

Loading: This game redefined loading. We typically focus on load times between levels, but Bayonetta, once again, was unique. With the game-play, anytime you collected an item, the game would pause and an image would display across the entire screen with a description. On the Xbox 360, this was quick and smooth. With the Playstation 3, this would also require a loading progress bar before the image would appear. But the loading issue wasn’t only with objects. Even when you went into your menu, the Playstation 3 would pause to load, while the Xbox 360 would jump right in. We wondered if an mandatory install would have cleaned up this issue on the Playstation 3 and which leads us to wonder why Sega decided against a mandatory install for the Playstation3.

Load Time 1: PlayStation 3 – 21 sec / Xbox 360 – 14 sec
Load Time 2: PlayStation 3 – 32 sec / Xbox 360 – 16 sec
Load Time 3: PlayStation 3 – 43 sec / Xbox 360 – 19 sec
Load Time 4: PlayStation 3 – 48 sec / Xbox 360 – 19 sec

*To ensure color accuracy from the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U output, the PlayStation 3 has RGB Full Range set to "Full" and Super White "On", and the Xbox 360 has Reference Level set to "Expanded" and HDMI Color Space set to "RGB". Our capture card we have captured segments from the AVS HD 709 . Blu-ray, HD DVD, & MP4 Calibration suite.

As you will see, each system matches each other at the SOURCE LEVEL. No contrast or gamma settings are manipulated before or after capturing our images/videos. We strongly believe that these types of corrections are done on a individuals preference and should not be adjusted by us. Finally, washed out looking images that are due to contrast or gamma differences will not have any influence on our final verdicts. Please Read through our F.A.Q page if you have any questions or concerns.*
