Welcome back for another exciting Head2Head! This time we will be looking at this year’s new Assassin’s Creed title. Over the series’ lifespan, there has always seemed to be a little bit more going for the 360 version in the past. Overtime however, the PS3 versions of this series have gotten a little better with each release. Could this new entry be the game that matches or even surpass the 360 version, or will this old habit of shoddy porting die hard? Lets put this “Revelation” under the lens and discover what lies beyond in both versions.
Graphics: This category seems to tell us that the Assassin Creed devs may have had a revelation of their own during development. For the most part, the game looks pretty identical. There are however some spots on one console that looked rather washed out due to the gamma levels. To our surprise however, it was the 360 version that had this problem. It is also evident that the gamma isn’t the only thing that leaves the PS3 version looking slightly sharper. Some details are just outright better on the PS3, though most of them will have to be seen pretty close up to notice. For example, if you refer to the ninth rollover on the second page, you can clearly see that the shoulder pad on Ezio’s outfit has a little more detail overall when compared to the 360 version. These close up details are pretty easy to overlook in most parts, but it is still a clear advantage that the PS3 has in the visual category. Many spots will look the same during game play, but at the end of the day the visual detail found within the game is indeed better on the PS3 without a doubt.
When we look at anti aliasing, things seem pretty equal across the board for MOST parts. Most noticeable jaggies will be present on objects off in the distance and on some of the shadows. There are a few spots where one console might hide them better than the other, but they exist on both sides and pose no real advantage what so ever. The shadow quality of both versions is also pretty equal, though there is a difference that boils down to personal taste. This would be that they are more pronounced on the PS3, but softer on the 360.
As far as pop ins go, they both stream textures pretty well overall. Same goes for fade ins and draw distance, so there is no real advantage on either console in this aspect. All in all this is probably the most equal Assassin’s Creed game in terms of visual quality thus far, but the PS3 will be commanding the overall advantage here with sharper textures.
Performance: The performance aspect of the game was pretty well matched, but unfortunately that doesn’t mean they were perfect. The targeted frame rate for the game was thirty frames per second, and both game remained close to it for the most part. However when the action heated up or if a lot of distant scenery was shown on screen, both versions began to drop frames and tear on a slightly noticeable level with the extra stress. While neither game dropped to an unplayable or even annoying level, it did appear that the PS3 always seemed to drop an extra two frames more than the 360 version. Furthermore, while both games had tearing, the PS3 version also had a little bit more. Overall the performance was matched pretty well this time around, but the 360 edges it with a slightly smoother experience.

Loading: The loading times were also pretty even between both versions, and fairly decent as well. There were some spots where one version would load quicker than the other by up to five seconds, but these instances can be found on both sides. At the very least here, you won’t have to wait much longer to play based on what version you buy. It is worth noting that these times are based on the 360 running off of the disk, while the PS3 version has a mandatory install of about 3.8 gigs. If you don’t have a hard drive on the 360, you have nothing to worry about here. If you plan on playing it installed on your 360 anyway, then the results of that option are pretty obvious. All in all however, loading ends in a tie with no issues found on either version.

Epic win for the 360 version of this game on digital foundry indeed.
I knew the ps3 version scraping a tie here was too good to be true lol.
It’s better on 360 as we always expected.
Nothink more too say -> Face-Off:
But make no mistake – this is still a fully featured Assassin’s Creed title with a lot of gameplay to enjoy, so which console version gets the nod? Well, in visual terms the gap has narrowed once more to the point where image quality comparisons are basically pointless, but things are certainly different from a performance perspective. Here, across the run of play, it’s clear that the Xbox 360 version has a consistency in terms of frame-rate and controller response that seems to be lacking within certain map areas on the PlayStation 3.
Better FPS and Response with same Texture Quality = xbox360 WIN
Actually I have to disagree with DF this one. The texture differences are easily seen in the rollovers and DF made no mention of it. Also if you look at his comparison video, there were a few spots where the 360 dipped down below the PS3 version (360 was in the teens in fact for a sec). I think he was just trying to please 360 fanboys, for what reason I don’t know.
I respect both LoT and DF, but when you actually look at all of the evidence it is clear that LoT is the one that hit the nail on the head on this one. Saying that “neither version can be considered better than the other” is more accurate than giving the 360 the nod when it has frame rate and tearing issues of it’s own (sometimes worse than the PS3).
As far as I can see, verdict = Tie
I think you’re talking about the wooden coach cut scene, the 360 version does drop a bit more than the ps3 there.
Once the main game starts though, the more important gaming framerate is definitely more consistant on 360.
There’s one part where the ps3 briefly drops to 16fps whilst walking about the town.
It looks like the 360 gets a 4-6fps advantage where it matters.
Funnily enough i think page 1 of LOT’s screenshots favoured the ps3 version but page 2 favours the 360 more.
There’s a lot of cut scenes in their comparison shots though(especially on page 1).
I’m sorry but none of the screen shots look better on the 360. I will go as far as to say they look the same in some spots AFTER limbo, but there are a few that sport SLIGHTLY more detail on the PS3.
As for the performance, you make a vary valid point but they are still too close overall to merit anything other than a tie. They both drop below each other but the 360 does seem to have a few frames more in the open areas, like you pointed out. The way I see it though, this is no more an advantage on the 360 as the minor visuals are on the PS3 (which LoT did mention as well).
But you know, that is the thing about games that are a true tie due to pros and cons. Some gamers will hold one value over the other and everyone will have their own opinions. When you look at EVERYTHING however, this can be nothing other than a tie based on logic. As far as personal opinion and what a gamer holds more value in, to each his own. I feel this game is a true tie but I can see why PS3 gamers feel it is a PS3 win as well as 360 gamers feeling they edged it with performance. No matter how you slice it, a tie will always be where people disagree the most.
I’ve got no problems with this being a tie here on LOT.
I know you think the performance is close enough to merit a tie, but 4-6fps advantage pretty much sums up most cross platform games on 360 or ps3(either way).
La noire won on ps3 with a 4fps advantage, i know it had a few extra minor graphic effects, but it was nigh on identicle on 360(great port in fact). I did get it on ps3 though
Tiny differences have declared many a winner on both sides in the past.
So i’m not surprised digital foundry gave the 360 version a win(he preferred the framerate, controller response and less tearing of the 360 version).
Nobody has mentioned that the guard in the screenshot page 2 is fat and detailed in the 360 version, and is thin and with not a lot of detail, at least in the face, in the ps3 one
Looks like a tie to me.
PS3 is sharper, clear ps3 win here.
For me, they are the same, even the DFoundry review says it, the only difference i see is the bloom effect that is only present in the limbo stage, and only in some cutscenes, on the other part i see better or sharper textures in the 360, look at the pauldron pic, everything looks better, the hood, the skin, the beard, all the details, and the pauldron in the ps3 is full of “artifacts” those that appear when something is sharper than normal, the pauldron on the 360 looks clean and nice, well defined, like i said, i only see the 360 version brighter in the limbo scene (according to DF, 360 and ps3 manage weather effects different, maybe this could be the case), maybe the ps3 looks better in cutscenes, like it does in Mortal Kombat, but in gameplay this game looks better on 360, i have both consoles, three if i count that crap named wii…anyway Like someone said, you wont spot this differences if you have a 52″ hdtv sitting far, maybe if you sit 5 inches from the screen you could discover interesting shit like WOW LOOK HE HAS BETTER WRINKLES IN THIS CONSOLE!! My top console is ps3, im a fanboy of sony since the psone, but i can’t see any sustancial difference here, same res, same textures, and only different lighting, if we the ps3 users wanna feel joy for that, HUZZAH!, anyway i got it as present for the 360 and since i have all the past titles in it (Cause past ones really have a difference), imma deal with the BLOOM effect that ruins the entire game on 360, because BLOOM is what makes a game good or bad!! (sarcasm)…
i cant believe how sad the SDF sound on here, the way they are crowing about a sony victory smacks of desparation! the sdf will always will the fanboy wars on these forums as all the xbots are HAPPY gaming or have social lives, check post counts and you will see that its mainly sadstation owners who troll and are constantly looking for affirmation of their consoles superiourity LOL. After all these years they have finally got one, WOOPIEE, i own both consoles, the only thing i use the sh*tstation for is singstar for the kids, ive played all its aaa titles but have always traded them for xbox ones, so sorry guys but i still dont get it.
TRUTH: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-face-off-assassins-creed-revelations
have any of u “xbots” still have a launch day xbox 360 that hasnt blown up? cuz i live in greenville sc i have 5 friends who had 360s 2 with elites and 1 with a halo 3 elite and all 5 of them got the rrod…….hell even xbox “slims” fail 24% of the time but i have a 40gig ps3 i got in 2007 that i have never cleaned and use hardcore that runs like a peterbuilt i have a 250g 360 but im scared to play it more then i have to(first day i got it i was thinking “bad idea” cuz it sounds like a pc thats frying its motherboard supper load)
and omg when i found out ffX IIV was only 420i on 360 i almost shat on myself woundering 1)how could sq enix let FF get muilt-plat(only reason i got my ps3 orig was for FF)2) how could they release something that bad it just makes them look bad
I have a 2005 xenon working without problems. Next.
just though of something that buging me its XIII not XIIV math was my strong point to (not saying much for me)
EASY WIN 4 THE MIGHT XBOX 360!!!
the numbers say ur lieing(im not how would i now) but ill say this ur extra lucky cuz 52% failure is a huge hurdle u have jumped over the past few years 2008 was a monster year over 70% of 360s failed in 2008
Cool to see that they managed to make the PS3 version this good.
Anyways, I started loving this series when Assass II came out, Brotherhood was also good.
Thought the first one was shitty and Revelations killed it for me.
Hope Assass III will make me love this franchise again. Hope it’s in Japan, China or something like that.
Reading some comments I think Ubi should develop a new AC series for XBots only: Asinine’s Creed!!
love this from skyrim from a well known ps3 only fanboy- November 16, 2011 at 9:01 pm
Everyones PS3 games look a lot better than LOT’s screen shots. It’s been a hot debate in many a past article. The conclusion is the washed out look is irrelevent as it can easily be fixed by adjusting the brightness and contrast on your t.v.- samchez
in a way i agree with him, funny when after so many years a 360 game looks washed out, and now all the sudden the sony fanboys come out in droves waving their fanboy flags, but umm can’t i adjust the brightness on my tv for this game just like i have to do countless times on my ps3? umm yea thought so. but with less tearing, and a better frame rate, this is a 360 win, or a tie, not a ps3 win.
have to end by saying i really hate how hypocritical the sony camp has become this gen. i love both my systems, but i swear coming online and seeing the idiotic “flip flop” hypocracy from the sony fanboys makes me wish sometimes i didnt own one and like it as well.
I doubt the framerate tearing isn’t anoying in the ps3 version and in my opionion the glossy textures in the xbox version look overdone.
In this battle, the Ps3 wins.
