i think the PS3 looks slightly, i mean slightly better. but then again its like they forgot to add the top layer of the ground to the PS3 version, but in multiple screens on the first page background objects look better…….so a Tie it is
no i feel that the xbox version has aliasing issues ps3 has some missing terrain and a softer look (mlaa). Otherwise a tie it is.
360 in literally every single screen. All you have to do is look at the first screenshot and tell it’s a 360 win. If you need more clarification there are others but the victor isn’t going to change. Atleast when it comes to graphics, the 360 has the best, which is basically saying it has terrible graphics but it’s the better of the two.
first screenshot xbox = aliased mess
360 wins on looks. Need to see how they perform before I choose which version to not buy.
Hahahahah.
First Duke Nukem and now Alice.
Makes you wonder, what’s the point?
Playstation has better anti-aliasing on that one, think it’s a MLAA type, but actually both versions are very close.
Outdoor pictures look better on x360 and indoor look better on PS3 imo.
Just watched a PS3 gameplay of this game… terrible screen tearing on the PS3 version guys. Sorry to have to tell you that.
I wasn’t planning on getting this game in the first place, but the screen tearing kills it even more for me.
360 wins i think
Look closely at the first and sixth shots. The 360 version has sharper and more detailed textures. Also the PS3 version is missing terrain in every outdoor shot it seems. Visuals go to the 360 hands down.
On a side note, both versions look like shit…
Having extra yellow fluff on the ground doesn’t give the win to the XBOX 360 hands down.
The XBOX 360 version suffers from terrible aliasing.
I call it a draw.
360 no doubt. Anyone who says otherwise is a fanboy.
The Xbox 360 version of the dresser next to Alice looks horrible in the first screenshot, that coupled with the aliased edges makes the whole thing seems way uglier than its PS3 counterpart. On the flip side, the PS3 version of Alice has this weird implementation of shadow, looks pretty unnatural if you ask me. This particular problem also shows itself in the eighth screenshot where the PS3 version of the white cat has pixelated self-shadow, as opposed to the smooth and soft look of the Xbox 360 version.
Overall, the Xbox 360 version seems to exhibit more details in terrains, clothing and such, but they only seems to be most apparent while Alice is in a location surrounded by nature. When in the urban areas though, the differences are a lot less obvious, and even in some occasions, like in the third screenshot on the second page, where details from a further distance seems more visible in the PS3 version.
Anyway, the differences are definitely there, but I don’t think they would compromise the overall quality that much.
Let’s see what the performance analysis has to unfold.
On the side note, I wonder if Lens of Truth will also be doing a Head2Head of American McGee’s Alice now that it’s available for consoles.
Sry LOT, but im full of SCREENSHOTS.
I loved the washed ps3 colors. Xbox 360 win ofc.
Hey TheTruthHurts, thanks for commenting.
Sorry for the delay fo our usual full analysis H2Hs, but we have been really busy keeping up with E3 and everything. Also it is important to remember (as it states in our FAQ) that we currently run this site out of our own pocket. We do our best to keep up and most of the time pull it off, but you cannot forget that we all work full time jobs and have families to support as well.
Anyway, needless to say, things are starting to calm down so you can bank on seeing some full H2Hs of some of the bigger games very shortly.
They both look very similar but it seems more time was spent optimizing the Xbox 360 version. The PS3 version looks a little more darker and washed out but suits the art style of Alice: Madness Returns.
it looks like the res is sharper on xbox, but lighting and background objects are better on playsation. so, pick your poison, i guess?
@ “TheTruthHurts”
Didn’t see you in the Duke Nukem Forever “Head-to-Head”… I guess you realized, that “truth” would really, “hurt”, so you came running in this Head-to-Head like a scared little school girl, boasting about a game no one’s even heared of nor, will even care to play… Why don’t you go check out the Duke Nukem Forever Head-to-Head and see how your precious “sexbox” got it’s ass spanked!!!
no one cares to play duke nukem forever, this game on the other hand is playable and has a great artstyle.
or is kinda crap if u read most reviews, and by great art style , u mean like a 2007 360 game, i agree. Ive seen better looking games on a wii (artistically speaking). Both games are pants
but there is one painted wrong…
But I will say onething for the happy of the ps3 fanboys… im going away of this site… this site got boring without real H2H.
bb… im full of ss h2h.
Noooooooo please don’t leave us truehurts, how will we live without ur intelligent, insightful comments ?
In duke nukem both consoles are crap, go on, buy it lol
Now back to alice, if you like washed colors, less detail, less shadows, go for it again LOL. If u wanna make some fun, at least be smart, you got self pwned kid.
Lol everyone is going to be too busy enjoying the Uncharted 3 beta coming up while you can continue playing with your master chief action figures in your playhouse.
I have to say the missing terrain textures and detail on the PS3 version is strange, and an obvious win for the Xbox in that department. Some images (eg-the cat) are better on the PS3 though. it would be an exact tie……….if it wasn’t for those missing terrain details.
anyone who say and vote that ps3 win is a great solid ps3 fanboy!
i think ps3 use antialiasing and it menages better some scene, but xbox has a better graphic
translate.google.de/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.videogameszone.de%2FAlice-Madness-Returns-PC-233627%2FSpecials%2FAlice-Madness-Returns-Grafikvergleich-zwischen-PS3-und-Xbox-360-Version-824457%2Fgalerie%2F1518574%2F&sl=de&tl=en&hl=&ie=UTF-8
More screenshots, where ps3 colours been adjusted, and it looks much better, and bizarrely the 360 version has strange red hue to it.
Will look at these closer later, but probably give it 360, although like duke nukem on ps3, I’m not sure I’d want to claim this win lol
This looks like a bog standard ue3 game on both formats, with little attempt to make use of ue3 on 360, let alone optimise for ps3, so choose ur poison.
Anyone know if games any good? I heard bad things about this
xbox has no antialising so ps3 wins for me.
Men,games starting to look exactly the same on both consoles. remember the days where the xbox could win the most of the head2heads?
First screenshot on the chest of drawers in the background favour the ps3 version, but on the same picture you can see on alice’s clothes that it’s sharper looking on 360(blurry on ps3).
Just swapping between the 2 screens over and over again shows that.
That’s as close as the ps3 gets though, the outdoor scenes look far better on 360.
Ps3 one’s a bit messed up lol.
It’s not a big deal, the game is average.
This H2H look like XBOX 360 VS PS2. Bayonetta style.
Whatever makes you feel better, “TrueHurts”…
I thought the same exact thing about the Duke Nukem Forever face off. lol
Except a bit more PS2 vs Sega Saturn.
I’m surprised anyone can give the PS3 a win here. There’s one shot where it has better aliasing. Other than that, we have better shadows on the 360 in one shot and the missing outdoor textures give the game a completely different look. What looks like a colorful environment in the 360 version looks drab in the PS3 version. Some seem to write that off as it somehow fitting the tone of the game, but come on… At least in Ghostbusters they had a low-res texture rather than just removing it entirely. This one doesn’t seem like it’s even close. I have to wonder how widespread the “missing textures” issues is throughout the game.
After closer inspection(cant see clearly on iphone screen) its pretty clear that 360 wins overall. It has horrible AA(or lack of)on 360, but little else seems to favour ps3. The lighting seems better on 360, although without seeing where light sources are, its not easy to be certain, but im guessing the 360 version incorporates better lighting and possibly some sort of ssao missing on ps3 too.
Im not convinced by colour of 360 version, if the screen-shots i posted link to are correct(sites usually very reliable), but then there is clearly some low res textures being used , especially in connection with alpha effects(the water effect is hideous)and also some textures not there at all, but the majority of two textures seem same.
By all accounts, the game is not great EG gave it 5/10 ( whole 2 more than Duke Nukem)and it looks like a bog standard game all round, but if u want to enjoy the bog standard game, and want the most complete bog standard experience, then 360 is ur choice.
Now, im off to look at a game that isnt crap, so i can forget about this and duke nukem forever lol
360 ALL THE WAY!
Unreal Engine always looks better on 360 and that’s a fact. Anyone saying both is a fanboy.
Peace!
Castlevania seems to be the ue3 engine exception and this was heavily optimised and led on ps3,, otherwise , it’s pretty clear that ue3 favours 360. Would be interesting to know if they led on 360( think we know answer already though lol)
am i the only one that thinks this games is just fucked up?
In what sense? If u mean it looks awful visually and as a game , no! Lol
If u mean In a twin peaks kinda f’d up, then I’m guessing no still , it looks kinda twisted
What’s up with the ground texture in the ps3 version? That looks wrong.
It’s kind of a trade off here, The 360 is slightly clearer but has a lot of aliasing. The PS3 has some blur to it as usual with the UE3 but has a lot less aliasing. I for one can not stand aliasing, Those jagged edges just make games look bad.
Slightly clearer? I’m still perplexed at these comments. Can some of you not see all of these missing textures in the PS3 version? How the water is completely flat and lifeless? How these forest environments look like the PS3 version is taking place in an alternate “dark” world version of the level? The tradeoff isn’t between “slightly clearer” and “less aliasing”. The tradeoff is between “fully textured environments that drastically alter the look of the game” and “less aliasing”.
I mean, look at the second pic on page 2. On the PS3, you’d think that the water was mud. Can you see the waterfall? Slide over the XBOX 360 image and there is no comparison. They are two different scenes.
Yes, in the less colorful, drab environments, the PS3 does look superior. I have no idea how much of the game that involves, though. Because I’d rather be looking at those outdoor/forest environments in the XBOX 360 version than those environments in the PS3 version. I’ll trade the AA for those missing textures any day.
I’d trade the game for one that isn’t shit on either console if I was you lol
It’s not all the textures that are like that , many are like for like, and game doesn’t look so bad in other screenshots I posted, but there’s little doubt those missing textures and low res one are a major blot on what’s already an ugly game.
The lack of AA is lesser of two evils IMO , but if I’m buying a bog standard game like this, I should be prepared for a crappy looking game.
You could say the same thing about the AA – in most of those screenshots, there is no noticeable difference. There are a couple where there is. I’ve seen videos of the game running and whatever AA issues the XBOX version has aren’t as noticeable as the missing textures in the PS3 version.
I’m not really debating the overall look – I’m debating how anyone can get themselves to the point of thinking the PS3 version is anywhere near the realm of superior in this case. People seemed to be in an uproar when the PS3 version of Ghostbusters had low-res and missing textures. The screenshots here are a more extreme version of that and some people still think the PS3 version looks better? Did EA send out some shrooms as promo items?
Can’t argue too much with that, I’m no fan of jaggies, but take few jaggies over missing textures and some muddy ones , any day. If I actually wanted this game and picked it up for very cheap, those things wouldn’t put me off on either version, but no way I’d pay full price for either version as they stand.360 gets nod for me , followed by a thumbs down for being a crap game lol
Having viewed the videos of this game, I have to take back what I said about this being a terrible looking game , it’s really not that bad , and is actually quite unique and quirky, and possibly even kinda attractive. Not changed my view on game itself though, still a bargain basement buy at best for me
Chill out brandon, The game sucks on both systems in the end. Do you really think that anybody is going to notice the differences when playing the 360 version and then going to the ps3 version? The only thing that’s going to stand out are the jaggies, which are much less on the PS3. Also how do we know that the textures and the waterfall were fully loaded? There was also no performance analysis done either so right now no decision can be made of what version is superior to the other until the full head to head has been done.
Look, I’m just stating what I can see. No need for me to chill out. You seem to be the one with the problem. If the game sucks on both systems, what are you doing here? You seem to be pretty invested in something you seemingly have no interest in. I’m so glad for you that you would prefer to have missing textures over more aliasing. Great!
Believe me, I already considered the textures loading in late (conincidentally, in every screenshot they took). That’s why I looked at gameplay videos on youtube. The PS3 version is fully loaded (or “not” loaded as the case may be). Those textures never come in. The scene with the cheshire cat from the beginning of the game is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ja55DaqY9Xg . Notice the completely drab environment behind the cat.
The XBOX 360 version of the same scene is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pH5iYqM0eOg around the 25 minute mark.
What is even more odd is that I don’t think those textures are missing for any good reason. At least, not because they needed to remove them due to any performance concerns. That ground texture that is missing in these screenshots will come and go over various sections in the PS3 video. It’s present ALOT of the time, so the issue isn’t quite as bad and I’ll admit it doesn’t have a huge impact in the overall look of the level since it’s there more often than not. It is very strange that it goes away at times, yet is always there in the XBOX version. It looks WRONG in some cases because there is no transition at times between a section of the ground that has the texture and one that doesn’t. You get a hard line break in the texture. I would say the XBOX look is what is intended. I have to wonder if the PS3 version can be patched….
Well i just took a huge crap and feel a whole lot better.
Apart from the AA, the 360 looks the better of the two such as in the textures, shadow filtering, water resolution and lighting though the the lighting could be down to different implementation and it maybe the PS3 has the more realistic version of it.
360 has sharper textures and better lighting
I just noticed that they used the XBOX 360 (or, I suppose it could be PC) screenshot on the back of the PS3 case. They show that shot of the Cheshire cat with that colorful ground texture which is completely missing in the PS3 version.
Yeah, I looked at those youtube videos some more and I’m changing my tune. Some of you I’ve been arguing with are right. This may be closer to a tie than I thought.
I think it’s incorrect to call that yellow/green texture “missing” since what they have in it’s place in the PS3 version IS fully textured. It’s just… different. I can’t say for sure which is right, beyond the screenshot on the back of the boxes showing the XBOX “look” (unless that is from a similar looking, but different, area).
Either way, given that that texture isn’t unused throughout the entire level (or hardly any of it), it’s not really an issue, IMO.
It still looks like the PS3 has slightly lower res textures which is more apparent in some of those water effects. I have a feeling we’ll find that it’s another case of the image being softened to reduce the aliasing. So, the trade-off is really as small as less aliasing for a softer image in the PS3 version.
By the way, after analyzing those videos, I really like the art design and don’t think it looks THAT bad at all.
I’m a PS3 guy, but you’d have to be retarded to call this even close to a PS3 win.
I’m still amazed at how companies can release such a piece of crap for one system and not the other. Then, the killer is, they charge the SAME price for both versions of the game.
So, yeah, I’m mainly a PS3 gamer, but I’m not going to sit here and talk about how one part of one screenshot looks a little better on the PS3.
Congrats 360, you got another one.
The funniest thing about PS3 vs 360 is that it’s up to the developer to make both systems shine. It’s not because one system is better than the other. If a dev tries hard enough, the game can be the same on both (dead space 2, need for speed hot pursuit)
XBOX 360, definitely! Some PS3 screens has more realistic shadows and ALL PS3 screens has Anti-Alising but NO TEXTURES? Unacceptable!
to me this is a tie because even though the 360 looks more detailed the edges are to rough and it looks really shinny even though it has better shadows than the 360 but the ps3 looks blurry but it actually helps it compare to the 360′s side and it looks more detailed on the background
please run off with “ps3 less aliassing” thats bs, the xbox is the one with the jaggy edges
Looks like crap all around. Used under twenty purchase for me
I hate H2Hs like this.
Now I can’t decide which one to buy ):
Better AA and cleaner look, or extra floor textures
