Welcome back for another exciting Head2Head! This week we put Spicy Horse | EA’s Alice: Madness Returns for the PlayStation 3 & Xbox 360 under our lens (or should we say looking glass). Which version is the true Queen of Wonderland? Jump on down the rabbit hole with us to find out.
Graphics: The visuals of Alice turned out to be a pretty clear cut category. This is one of the few games out there in TODAY’s market that feature differences that anyone switching between console can see easily. For one the PS3 version of the game seems to be missing texture details on the ground while outdoors in random spots throughout the game. It really isn’t anything small either. The PS3 version looks rather dull in certain spots with no grass details, missing foliage, and in some spots seems to have inferior water effects. In all honesty it looks like some of the outdoor scenes take place on either stone or dirt surfaces (which some PS3 players may argue they prefer). Luckily it doesn’t plauge the entire game so some areas are worse than others. The 360 on the other hand looks very vibrant and colorful in all areas, which adds to the overall charm of the game. Furthermore there are a few spots indoor and out that sported slightly sharper details on the 360. It isn’t to bad, but it is there and you can see it clearly in some of the rollovers. Shadows seem similar for the most part, but as you can see from the rollovers, it would appear that the 360 version also has softer and more appealing shadows in some spots.
The PS3 does have one very distinct advantage however. This would be the Anti Aliasing method implied in each version. In fact the 360 version seems to be missing AA altogether as there are several jaggies when compared to the smoothed out PS3 version. When it is all said and done however it is the 360 version that comes out on top. Even with the AA problem, the 360 version still sports sharper textures and softer shadows. Also from a technical standpoint, regardless of whether or not you prefer the look of the PS3 version, the missing outdoor textures is still something a little extra that the 360 has to offer in the visual field.
Performance: On the performance side we have a much better result. Both consoles handled the game well when it was all said and done, but there were slight advantages toward the 360 version. The PS3 did manage to run the game at 30 FPS for the most part, but there was a slight amount of screen tearing to be found. The 360 version on the other hand ran the game flawlessly with no screen tearing at a solid 30 FPS throughout. Even though the differences are very slight, no screen tearing is still better than even a little bit of it. However seeing as how the differences are so small that they won’t go noticed by the human eye, we are going to call a tie here.

Loading: This category may seem deceiving based on the averages. As you can see the PS3 version had and average load time of about two seconds faster than its 360 counterpart. When you look at the individual samples however, things aren’t so clear cut. Both versions have had instances where they load up to four seconds faster than each other and a few were too close to even matter (like 1 second). With that in mind we feel the best verdict for this category is a tie, seeing as how the load times for each version are rather inconsistent throughout.

i heard this comes with the original? in what way? downloadable arcade style or on disc? nice head2head i almost went with ps3
yeah, its come with the original but its almost unplayable, i really suggest search the info on wiki if u want to know the history of the first game…
off topic: I purchased the ps3 version )’=. Next time i ll wait the H2H
bizarre the original is a pc game yet the pc version of this doesnt come with it. i have the original i just cant play it on my current pc. i guess i could try to patch it, and .. i hate pc gaming.. by the time i get it to work i wont play it
LOL the pc game doesnt come with the first game??? omg thats funny as hell n so ironic. By the way, i just gave up alice mgee )=
Definitely a 360 win. Regardless, this game isn’t about graphics. They’re shit in either version, but the emphasis is much more on a grim story, and both obviously deliver that. It looks like another game where the dev simply got lazy when porting to the PS3.
PS3 still gets the graphical kings of the year: Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, and Killzone 3, as well as the superior console version of Battlefield 3. So enjoy the win, Xbots.
Actually this game is all about graphics since its all about the art lol.
I’m going to get this on ps3, which is ashame because i prefer my ps3 when it comes do Download content. (Alice 1 Download)
I have 596 on my psn list and like 4 on my xbl list of downloads LOL.
Clearly I have a favorite.
Once price drops, I’m going 360:)
@DIAL
ROFL funny how the “game isn’t about graphics” when the ps3hdwii gets it’s ass kicked there fantard.
Face it the record shows that the PS3HDWII is completely INFERIOR yes INFERIOR yes INFERIOR to 360 when it comes to pumping out eye blistering graphics using it SUPERIOR yes SUPERIOR unified RAM, embedded 256gb/sec dram, and VASTLY SUPERIOR GPU. Compared to 360′s GPU the RSX performs like an old Tandy TRS-80 ROFL. Oh and lets not forget how the DEVS are to blame for all the LOSSES the PS3 high powered calculator has racked up against the 360 ROFL. PS3 childern have used that EXCUSE from the get go LOL. You should at least try to be original for crying out loud. Oh and as far as graphical kings go that remains to be seen, or are you going to start using the “You just wait,” PS3 child’s argument that we’ve heard a thousand times before LOL? As for the win??? Yeah we “xbots” will enjoy it and have been enjoying it for about 6 years now LOL. Win after win after win after win. Lazy developers ROFL..NOT!!!!
@buying1999
Even after all that garbage you just wrote, you still fail to realize that 360 has yet to produce one single exclusive that can out match PS3 exclusives… The only reason why 360 fan-nerds like you come to these types of websites and celebrate over multiplat-360-wins (when we all know that it basically come down to developer talent) is because all 360 exclusives look like pure utter garbage in comparison… Yeah, exclusives; the games that are designed specifically, utilizing the particular platforms capabilities. Let’s take a long walk over these few little “facts” I threw together: Killzone 2 > Halo 3… Uncharted 2 > Alan Wake (Hell, even Uncharted 1 owned that game)… Metal Gear Solid 4 > Splinter Cell: Convinction… Both inFAMOUS > Both Fable 1 & 2… Killzone 3 > Halo Reach (Lol, Halo Reach had such garbage graphics, Lens of Truth even did a comparison between Halo Reach and Resistance 2); A three year old PS3 exclusive killed 360 fan-nerd’s fps king!
You see where I’m going with this, right? You can spout GPU numbers all day long but, it doesn’t change the fact that 360′s “superior” GPU still isn’t enough to dish out better looking games than anything design specifically for PS3… And that’s a fact ALL 360 fan-nerds are gonna have to bite down on, PERIOD!!!
@Moneysha ROFL! Spoken like a grandmaster PS3 fantard. Congratulations, you just rehashed the same tired ps3 fantard defense that we’ve heard on these sites for 5 years now ROFL. Developer tanent?? ROFL. So I guess you’re convienced that the only developers that are really talented are Sony’s exclusives developers??? ROFL Oh that’s good!!!! ROFL
So what if Sony has great exclusives? 99% of available software is NOT EXCLUSIVE!! Of this 99%….98% are leagues better on 360 ROFL!! Oh I know your butt hurts over this but that’s a FACT and PS3 fantards, like yourself, are going to have to bite down on it PERIOD. Oh this is just too easy.
Dialga I can tell you’re already frustrated about this if you need to involve irrelevant games to make yourself feel better.
Do yourself a favor and buy a 360, that way you have both and can play each console’s awesome exclusives.
People misinterpret my post. I wasn’t saying graphics are irrelevant because PS3 lost. I was saying they were irrelevant simply because that was obviously not the focus of the dev. My point is, compare this game to games like Gears, Killzone, Uncharted, God of War 3, Assassins Creed, etc., and it becomes obvious that this game doesn’t even come close to any of those, graphically. For a 2011 title, it really doesn’t look that great, so matter what system you buy it on. I’m sure if American Mcgee wanted it to compare with those games, he would have made sure it happened, but he didn’t because that wasn’t the focus. I realise this is a flat out win on Xbox 360, and accept it. I’m just pointing out that it would be stupid for someone to purchase this game solely on the basis of graphices (even on PC).
“PS3 still gets the graphical kings of the year: Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, and Killzone 3, as well as the superior console version of Battlefield 3. So enjoy the win, Xbots.”
I’m sorry but that last statement just makes you less credible and less to be taken seriously. The fact that you stated “ps3 still gets the graphical kings…” indicates that you’re trying to justify ps3′s loss on this one. And saying “enjoy the win, xbots” also means you’re irritated/frustrated about the loss if you bring fanboyism into the topic.
I understand that the graphics are nothing special but it’s art direction is definitely unique.
the best graphics of the year of the consoles is Forza 4 and Gears of War 3 fact
I really am not sure how it can be said that the PS3 is “missing” that texture. We aren’t looking at a blank space with no texture in the PS3 version. The PS3 version has a “different” texture, but it isn’t necessarily “missing”. I mean, the XBOX version, by the same token, is “missing” the PS3 version’s texture. I initially had the same reaction when I assumed the entire look of the level had changed (as is described in this H2H), but upon watching the entire level play out, it really told a different story.
And, honestly, to say “most” outdoor scenes take place on stone or dirt surfaces in the PS3 version is an ENORMOUS exaggeration, which anyone who wants to take a look at any walkthrough videos on YouTube can see. For the most part, the PS3 version has that same yellow/green ground texture the XBOX version has. There is no way it is “missing” that texture due to any technical limitation given how it’s used in the large majority of the same places the XBOX version uses it in. I do find it odd that they didn’t apply the same texture to the same spot and it may very well be a mistake. Had “most” of the outdoor scenes in the PS3 version REALLY been that same stone/dirt texture, I’d agree – there would be no contest. That just isn’t true, though.
There are definitely places where the XBOX seems to have superior water effects. IMO, this is really superior water effects (more noticeable in some areas than others)/softer shadows vs anti-aliasing.
I also notice that the XBOX version is being listed as running up to 1080p. REALLY???? I find that hard to believe that it’s running the game at a 1080p resolution. If that’s true, I’m getting the XBOX version. I can’t imagine, though. It might be upconverting a native 720p res to 1080p (which anyone’s display device will be doing as well if you have a native 1080p display), but those specs read like it has a resolution advantage over the PS3.
Come on guys… I just watched the H2H video. In your own video wouldn’t you say that at least 95% of the time the textures used are exactly the same between the two versions? There are very few times within your own video where this different “stone” texture pops up in the PS3 version and not the XBOX version.
“And, honestly, to say “most” outdoor scenes take place on stone or dirt surfaces in the PS3 version is an ENORMOUS exaggeration”
I see what you’re talking about. The seventh picture clearly shows them having the same floral ground. The picture without the flora is posted at least twice. hmmm. Xbox version still looks more vibrant but I gotta go with the free Alice bonus. Xbox wins in graphics but I’m going PS3 this time.
LOT display what resolution the game will scale up to, not the native resolution. Since the 360 has a dedicated hardware scaler all 360 games will upscale to 1080p if 1080p is activated in the settings. FYI the native resolution is 720p on both consoles.
It’s just irrelevant what it will scale up to. Native res is the only thing that matters. ANY game will scale up to whatever your display’s native resolution is. The only difference is whether the XBOX upconverts and sends the display a 1080p signal or if it sends it a 720p signal and your display upconverts to it’s native res. Saying the XBOX has a resolution of “up to 1080p” is kinda misleading, IMO.
The PS3 doesn’t have a dedicated scaler, it’s GPU based so it has to be programmed in. It will only scale the game depending on what is activated in the settings and what the programmers have allowed it to scale to. In this case the game will scale to 720p which is it’s native res anyway. On PS3 it is always best to play the game in it’s native res as the GPU based scaler isn’t that great when used. See Crysis 2 or Dead Space 2 for example. They both upscale to 1080p on PS3 but look better when played at 720p.
I agree it would be nice to actually have the native res listed instead of the upscale res. Although again that can be misleading cause a lot of the time programmers upscale resolutions in-game. Halo Reach is 1152 x 720 but upscaled to 1280 x 720 by Bungie.
IMO the lack of a dedicated scaler is just another way that the PS3 is INFERIOR to 360. The misleading argument is invalid. The maximum ability for each console should be taken in to account for these H2H articles. Now something that IS misleading is the fact that the MANDATORY 4 gig install required for this games isn’t even put into the equation for the loading times??? Hello? Oh and how the hell is the performance on this H2H a draw? Clearly the PS3 had tearing as denoted by the test results where as the 360 how none. 360 won that part of the H2H also.
Just another in the ever growing list of victories for the SUPERIOR true gaming machine that is the 360.
@ BUYING1999
First, if the maximum ability of the console should be taken into account… let’s talk about the 360 game’s audio quality… or lack thereof. Let me guess, sound is not an immersive aspect right? Compressed audio is not a big deal right?
Second, you remind me of Al Bundy. Holding dearly onto PAST accomplishments while completely overlooking/denying RECENT decline. Get with the present times… your growing list of victories for this year now amounts to a whopping 3 titles. It seems like the list of mulitplatform victories are becoming like the list of exclusive titles for the 360… pretty much non existent.
This is a question directed at the LoT staff… purely out of curiosity. Why isn’t audio compared in H2Hs?
@Robbie Ok I can go with the audio but if we start doing that then we need to take into account whether or not a game needs a “MANDATORY” install or not and the maximum scaling ability of that game on the systems they are on too.
Question to the staff…..Why isn’t the MANDATORY install of PS3 games taken into account when doing the loading comparisons? Clearly it should be.
@ BUYING1999
The purpose of these H2Hs are to compare the games, not the consoles. A PS3 game install (whether mandatory or optional) is a function of the game, not the console. The developers specifically code the game to be optimized with the install. This is native to the game disc, therefore it is taken into consideration. This is not the case for the 360. The GAMES themselves do not contain the code that gives you HDD install, therefore it is not taken into consideration.
This is also the reason why many people feel that stating 360 games as 1080P without mentioning upscaling, is misleading. The resolution native to the game itself is not 1080P, nor is it meant to be. LoT claims that these H2Hs are vanilla, uncompromised… whatever is native to the game itself is compared. Yet, they list stats (for 360) that occur from hardware enhancements (upscaling)… contradicting the concept of a native, uncompromised comparison.
You are wrong, this game is about visuals (more than anything).Besides it comes with something very different, that its really why i really apreciate it the most.
Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, killzone 3, battlefield 3 thats ur best shot???? you are a fanboy, but you fail as a true ps3 fan cuz obviously u dont even know what ps3 has to offer (valkyria chronicles, Folklore, Disgaea, little big planet, etc) a lot of genres to choose but u only talk about shooters with nice Graphics, which i must say its so funny, if u are a graphic whore just buy a pc ¬¬¡
360 wins for sure, even if graphical differences are a few textures here and there, it matters in a game like this. I’ll definitely be getting this when it drops in price. looks cool.
To sum it up, the 360 version offers a better gaming experience, enough said.
@Lens of Truth:
Any chance of you guys working on a Head2Head of American McGee’s Alice, since it is now available for consoles and all. Also, how about putting out a list of which Head2Head (Screenshots and Performance Analysis alike ) Lens of Truth will be working on next like how you guys did back in the old days?
The 360 version is better overall, That missing grass/bird poop looking stuff just makes this a clear 360 win. The performance even has a better average of 30fps on the xbox.
This makes little sense to me – the dev managed to pull off full AA for the ps3 edition, but skimped on a lot of important textures. Why not just skip AA like on the Xbox and go for parity. I’m willing to bet textures are cheaper to implement than MSAA or similar. This should probs be adressed with a future patch.
I SAY NEITHER GET THE WIN TILL THE PC VERSION IS SHOWN CUS WE DONT KNOW WHICH VERSION MIMICS THAT VERSION BETTER.
CUS REMEMBER PPL THOUGHT BRINK HAD BETTER LIGHTING ON XBOX TILL PC SHOTS SHOWED UP N THE PS3 VERSION LOOKED MORE LIKE IT INCLUDING CRYSIS 2 PS3 LIGHTING BETTER I IMITATED THE PC LIGHTING.
SO TILL I C PC SHOTS OF THE SAME SHOTS OF THIS GAME I CANT SAY WHICH ACTUALLY LOOS BETTER
The 360 version is closer to the PC version. I know this because i have the pc version.
Nobody cares about PC here, so please do the PC addicted fanboy somewhere else.
Lens Of Truth is all about console and PC has nothing to do with this.
I’m not about pc so mauro go stick a d!(k in yo a$$. And Unscarred i can’t take ur word 4 it so yeah. I have 2 see 4 myself so till then i may give 2 xbox but barely in a scale of 1 to 10 I give ps3 a 6 n zbox a 6.2
THE WATER EFFECTS ON XBOX DUE LOOK MUCH BETTER.
THE PS3 VERSION LOOKS LIKE IT USING QUINCUX AA CUS OF THE BLURRYNESS
It would seem picture 11 has an interesting comparison. While the Xbox 360 version has proper textures and shadowing, the PS3 version is more clearer and sports better lighting. I’ll still get it on PS3 but when the price drops. The reviews have been mixed to say the very least.
I dig the PS3, and I know how much LOT loves the Xbox, but I have to agree. Xbox FTW for sure. Vibrant graphics and detail are important in a game like this. *takes hat off*. The PS3 developers sure stuffed this up.
Yep xbox takes the cake on graphics this time. Unatural vibrant colors works for unnatural games.
actually, after watching the video, that “missing” texture is not “missing” at all. It just chops and changes from stone to floral ground giving more terrain variety, whereas the 360 version is consistent. f*ck who knows. Pick your poison. Really fella’s, an Alice game????. lol. Give me God of War!
xbox360 wins here no doubt.ps3 has some mising textures but it’not really bad.texture resolution looks the same.same performance.
it would have been a great tie if textures weren’t mising on the ps3.
Wow… a perfect 30 frames per second. That’s something I almost never see with console games. The xbox version without question is better.
The df face-off just went up too, and comes to similar , but slightly different conclusions .
They say the AA is mlaa on ps3 and produces a cleaner looking game, but the lack of AA doesn’t substantially effect the look of 360 version.
The ps3 version is obviously missing a few textures as shown above, and some lower res textures ( water one we have seen) , but that again it doesn’t overly affect look of game. Both versions suffer from some compressed alpha texture issues, with shadows sometimes glitching in and out of view, but more so on ps3.
Ps3 version has better lod’s with some slight texture loading issues on 360 that don’t affect ps3 .
The frame rate is main difference in report, with both having a fairly steady 30fps when all is quiet, although ps3 drops occasional frames and tears bit more( both tear) , but when in battle with multiple enemies ps3 drops more significantly than 360 version, and tears more.
So overall , same conclusion , a 360 win, but some other factors explained , that lot didn’t cover, and complements the ones they did.
A fairly standard , bad ue3 port basically , that’s not exactly cutting edge on either platform, and whilst looking better on pc version apparently has some issues on that too, suggesting a bit of a craply programmed game .
Of course none of the above changes the basic gameplay , which is still not great by all accounts, with most reviews I’ve read saying it gets dull quickly.
Onwards and upwards
As much as I hate to say it, the Xbox version is much better. I don’t see how the PS3 can miss such big portions of flat textures. But everything else goes with it. Shadows, reflections, colors. This is like Ghostbusters. Some developers should just avoid to make games for PS3 if they are so bad. They are better patch it because this is non sense.
geez , theres some drama queens on here, its not that bad, and certainly wouldnt ruin u enjoying the ps3 version, if game was any good, or u actually happened to be one of few that like it. your’e viewing a very short bit of the game, with all the major differences highlighted in some shots, you wouldnt care that much whilst playing it
grow up people, great graphics dont make a great game, they can enhance an experience , but remember a few years back we were all looking at games far worse than this and enjoying them
eurogamer.net/videos/alice-madness-returns-ps3-360-face-off?size=hd
hd video comparison, ps3 version isnt hideous, just lacks some of the bells and whistles
Crushing defeat for the ps3, normal service has been resumed it seems.
The king of the console multiplatform gaming is back with an epic victory(hopefully we’ll get a dirt 3 h2h next).
It doesn’t matter if this Alice game is just above average, what matters is it’s running on UE3, showing us a glimpse of so many future games coming up that’ll use this cool engine.
I can’t wait for mass effect 3 lol.
Ue3 is a terrible engine, with the 360 version of this game and many other ue3 games having texture loading issues.
what matters, Id argue, is that this game running ue3 has been poorly optimised on both formats(a ue3 game on 360 with no AA, that’s shocking, with exception of Gears 3, which I can forgive, as its at least impressive looking)
Ue3 requires good optimisation as standard, on both formats. Me2 is heavily optimised, Castlevania was heavily optimised and Me3 is heavily optimised(and ps3 led by all accounts) Its not a good engine, but its cheap and cheerful, and allows certain features “out the box”
Unless we get more devs leading on ps3 with ue3 , which they do seem to be doing more these days, then 360 will always win these head2heads. It does seem that its the more low key titles that are getting the 360 leads and advantages these days.
also, dude, we all know 360 dirt wins, surely if u love this game that much, u should be playing it, rather than going on about it every post lol
It’s always the fanboys that favour the ps3 that seem to dislike UE3.
What a surprise!!!!
It’s not perfect but then again what middleware engine is?
It does a decent job supplying superior 360 versions and that’s good enough for me lol.
As for the 360 missing AA, i’d rather have the additional added graphic effects and less screen tearing thank you very much.
u missed my point about the AA dumbass, its shocking that a dev cant implement it into a 360 game when it comes almost free as a result of edram. This shows a lack of optimisation of the engine on their behalf.
i dont think i need to defend my criticism of ue3 as the fact that devs have to optimise it heavily in cases such as mass effect 39Gears 3 is obviously heavily optimised too), shows how bog standard it is. If optimised , its a good middleware engine, and once again, we have to come to point that, the ue3 as a piece of middleware is effectively designed around 360 hardware, so to call it middleware is a bit of a false term almost. It is the 360′s primary engine, as epic were actively involved in the design of 360 architecture and its tools.
as for it producing 360 ports that are better, it indeed does, unless it is led on ps3. as castlevania shows, ue3 can give good results on ps3, but requires optimisation.
Most major ue3 engine games are ps3 led these days, or are only slightly inferior at worst. this is a second tier game that clearly is lacking in gameplay as well as optimisation, so i honestly dont care if its a 360 win or not.
ps u missed the point i made about textures not loading too(another ue3 trait, synonomous with Gears 2 for example)
I didn’t miss your point on AA, i stated that i prefer the 360′s method used on this game than the decision they’ve taken with the ps3 version.
If it was a choice of AA or missing graphic effects and more screen tearing, i’ll take the 360 version any day of the week.
Of course they could have included AA on the 360 version, possibly the res would have dropped if they had included it.
It’s a simple design choice they’ve taken here on the 360 version, fill it with extra effects and leave AA out.
The ps3 version took the AA route whilst missing some graphic effects.
Bad choice i say!
I’m sure your ps3 fanboy deluded ways will disagree lol.
Yes I do disagree, because I don’t think it was a choice of choosing AA or ….. It was simply a cheap way of not having to optimise the game further. There’s ue3 games out there far more demanding than this one that run well and have AA .
Furthermore u did miss my point about the texture loading, as it’s inherent problem of ue3 not a platform issue. The ps3 version probably just reduced it via install .
Therefore it wasn’t a case of them improving frame rate etc, by not sorting it out, it’s just an inherent engine issue, that can be minimalised with good optimisation . They just have automatic advantage on 360 as a whole , due to nature of ue3 design.
So I am not being a deluded fanboy at all, just pointing out the facts about ue3 and this game, which clearly isn’t a big title and will have had a small budget and thus small amounts of optimisation , and hence a quick ps3 port, and bugs on both, which are indicative of being developed in short period of time on a piece of “one size fits all” middleware.
I’m surprised you mentioned the slow texture loading on UE games again as the ps3 seems to be the least affected of the consoles by it.
Like i said it’s not a perfect engine, but clearly going by the amount of developers using it, it’s heavily favoured for good results across the board(probably ease of use might have something to do with it as well).
I see little on the horizon that’s going to replace its use in many games so get used to it lol.
Maybe the frostbite 2 engine will prove to be a good alternative, but first we need to see how battlefield 3 ends up running on 360 and ps3 and how different games(non fps)run on it(need for speed is using it i hear).
Interesting times ahead.
like i said, im not a fanboy android, im just making observations from what ive read in articles etc.
if devs do optimise ue3 theres no doubt its a good engine, and like i said, and u commented on, it seems to be fairly easy to use, and its certainly more ps3 friendly than in the past with changes theyve made.
I can see more devs leading on ps3, especially if using ue3, but theres no doubt MS made the smartest move early on in gen, by making sure the 360 was suitable for use with ue3 engine and generally easy for devs to get best out of it.
Unless they are in the hands of a competent developper and actually show the rare PS3 superior version of UE game.
These PS3 droids all say the same thing developer this lazy that. OH and “PS3 should have been the lead on this game and they would have been equal.” ROFL well yeah I agree with that last one. If a developer programs for the least common denominator (PS3) then it’s much easier to port over to the 360. They get into trouble when they bring to bear the advanced capabilities of the SUPERIOR 360 hardware and then try to port to the paultry abilities of the PS3. That’s when you start seeing dropped frames, torn frames, missing textures, blocky shadows, missing or weak ssao, etc. Just the facts. I know PS3 fantards hate it but that doesn’t make it any less true.
I see buying1999 has crawled out from under his rock again , maybe he should slither back under there , where the rest of his slimy friends live.
If u had a clue buying about game programming , had ever read any technical articles , and what DEVELOPERS say, then you would know I’m speaking the truth, so it doesn’t matter what your retarded fanboy opinion is, I prefer to deal with facts, and opinions of people whose opinions count and isn’t based on some retarded love affair with a brand.
I did not now Castlevania:LOS used UE3. I thought it was a pretty stunning looking game (despite no AA) and it does have a performance advantage on the PS3. Just shows with very good optimisation and artwork any game engine can produce stunning graphics. Bioshock Infinate uses a heavily modied UE2.5
Very very good performance on both consoles. Don’t often come across that on consoles. Very surpirsed to see the 360 fully v-synced with no frame rate hits, that’s quite rare. Bit strange the PS3 has those missing texture details.
Seeing as this game is basically all Art – there’s no way someone can justify the Ps3 version being better.
And as for Android, I’ve only been on this site for a short while and you’re already starting to annoy me/ Dirt 3 looks nicer on 360 but has random freezes throughout
It is my job to annoy.
You’ll get used to me lol.
Dontcha get tired people not liking you? D:
You’re mistaken. Most people on this site love fandroid (closet 360 fans). It’s me, they hate lol.
@Dialgamarine
Eh, there’s worse on this site.
“It’s me, they hate lol.”
At least now I know none of the stuff you do is serious.
@ Linebarrel
“At least now I know none of the stuff you do is serious.”
Or he/she could be taking it serious and just lying about it.
It is his job, he doesn’t lie lol, it’s just lucky he’s so f***in good at his job lol
Think you overestimate ur significance tbh dialga lol
Yeah lol, I got used to Android a long time ago. It’s all in good fun though.
Well it’s running Ue3 engine that alone put 360 ahead. It’s a shitty engine for a shitty console. You have zero life and make some of the most dumbest comments i have ever seen. This game looks bad on any console or Pc so don’t brag it, might not be as bad as duke nukem but it’s not far off.Get a life scrub.
@TheToastyn00b
There’s one fanboy in particular for the PS3 that will soon begin to rag you even further than Android. Android is not a bad guy lol.
Just read the DF H2H and they have found tiny bits of screen tearing on the 360.
360 WINS!!
Flawless Victory!
I voted for the 360 although I won’t be picking this game up anytime soon. I’ll wait till it hits under twenty dollars used.
Graphically ps3 has the edge, thanks to implementation of pseudo-MLAA.
I prefer have no jaggies throughout the game than occasionally better water, due to higher resolution of the effect.
Textures are identical (despite lot says).
The performance is the really field where 360 has a small advantage. It is really 30fps rock solid with v-sync always enebled. PS3 version is good as well, bot not as solid as 360 version…
sorry for my english i’m italian
A slight win for 360 for me. PS3 version looks pretty solid, and doesn’t disappoint, but 360 still has the edge with slightly better textures and visual flare here-and-there. Either way, I won’t be playing this game.
the first picture with the grass says it all: xbox win lol. how can they not include grass on the PS3?? not cool
They did include grass on the PS3. Again, some of these screenshots are VERY misleading since it reads like that appearance is the “norm”. If you were playing the game and ran up that stone texture, it would then turn into that “grass” texture you’re thinking is not included. The “grass” texture is present in the PS3 version in almost all of the exact same places it is present in the XBOX version. You can see it in other screenshots in this same Head2Head as well as the video they posted.
I had the same reaction to the initial screenshot comparison. Then I watched the full level play out on both versions and it was WAY less of an issue. This texture difference is so miniscule, you would be shocked what a big deal is being made of it. The Digital Foundry face-off gave it a more appropriate weight.
I’m not saying the XBOX 360 doesn’t deserve a win for other reasons. But, this “different” texture issue is so minor it is irrelevant… at least, based on this one level that is being used for comparison purposes. I have no idea what is going on in other levels.
yeah, i was just paraphrasing. obviously the ps3 version has grass in it. but significant textures were missing on the PS3. Very rare, in fact this is the only time, that 1 screenshot tells me which console won the H2H. nbd tho, cus this game isn’t all that hot anyways
It also seems like these comparisons solely stuck to the beginning of the game. Given how much the PS3 version is getting dinged for switching terrain textures occasionally, I have to wonder what other levels look like. All of these comparison screenshots/videos are from VERY early in the game. Are there any other instances where the XBOX version has different textures than the PS3 version in other levels? I mean, not every chapter takes place in a forest.
Oh how I wish I can edit those annoying little bastard typos in the article. Just something that makes me go “Auuuggh” lol. No one’s perfect though, probably just simple mistakes.
Although I have a bad habit of rereading every post I make about 5 times to make sure I didn’t miss anything to the best of my ability.
I was watching the Digital Foundry video and the second screenshot on page 2 of this site supports this – it’s funny, that “stone” texture everyone hates on the PS3 also appears in the 360 in some areas and the PS3 version seems to have more detail when it comes to THAT texture.
There are definitely some oddities where some liquid objects are missing their sheen in the PS3 version (even though those same objects will have it in other areas).
This seems like stuff that COULD be patched, although I’d be shocked if they ever supplied one.
A 360 win but a minor one at that. The different textures which seems to be the main basis off the 360 win just appears to be more off a curiosity than anything else. Almost like when they were doing the ps3 port they tried to mix things up a little. As many people have said before the video shows the ps3 has the same grass textures present in most other parts off the game so its not like they have been omitted for performance reasons.
Different textures aside the ps3 does have AA applied which gives a better image quality compared to 360 but then 360 does have some minor graphical bells and whistles over ps3. 360 also gets the nod in terms off performance but only by a whisker.
As said a 360 win but only a minor 1
Disappointing for PS3 owners. Thankfully I have a 360, but that doesn’t matter because I’m not at all interested in this game for any platform.
Isn’t it annoying how people try to defend their system and say that their system is more powerful? It’s not the system that pumps out the graphics… it’s what the DEVELOPERS do with each game. Smart, talented developers can get the most out of both systems (or at least achieve parity… ex: Dead Space 2, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, Modern Warfare 2, and Burnout Paradise to name a few).
I’m sick of hearing that the 360 has “better graphix” because that just means the lazy developers built the game upon the strengths of the 360 and then made a shoddy port over to PS3 making the PS3 look like the inferior platform. I believe BOTH gaming systems are excellent and the developers should provide the same experience on both, but we all know that at the end of the day, it comes down to time and money. What system will the developer spend the most time with, what they’re most comfortable programming on and how much money they have to make the most out of both systems.
It’s quite a shame really.
I think this had to be said because I’m sick of fanboys ruining everything with their useless “in your face! my syztim iz da bezt!!” without any real knowledge about what has to be done behind the scenes to get that image on your screen. People are clueless… really clueless.
I agree. You should also tell that to all the PS3 fanboys who keeps bragging about PS3 having better looking exclusive games when it was quite clear that it was Sony’s own developers who have put time & effort into making their exclusive games look better than any 360 game up until now.
Now, games (or upcoming games) like Crysis 2, Gears of War 3, & Forza 4 proves that the 360 can very well equal to PS3 in terms of power.
^ Well said.I agree. It’s quite fustrating really. Some people really don’t have much else to do with thier time, and just don’t get it. I pity people like Android123, who obviously doesn’t have much else going on in his life!!! Oh well, what ever flicks ya switch, and the light is on and burning bright for Xbox fans on this one……….
No surprise that the dated engine runs better on the dated console. When developers actually develop their own in house engine, we clearly get better results on the PS3 as seen in many head 2 heads during the first half of the year. Duke Nukem Forever was probably just a fluke though. LOL
Anywho, this game certainly does look very interesting and I really want to try it out. Won’t be going for the PS3 version. That leaves the PC and 360. The PC obviously offers the superior experience but my 360 is starving for games. Maybe when this gets a nice hefty price drop I’ll consider it for the 360. So far it’s been very hard to justify that 360 purchase with the lack of exclusive games and all the relevant multiplats winning on the PS3 lately. /buyer’s remorse
And here comes the crybaby excuses when a ps3 loses another h2h, dated engines, dated console, ps3 version technically better in all areas(some deluded fanboy on eurogamer believes).
Just accept the defeat with good grace(like i always do on the rare occasion that the ps3 wins lol).
Why so salty, bro? And why make such flat out lies? D:
You crawl to your imaginary PC when your precious 360 gets stomped all over by the PS3 during all the relevant big name multiplat face offs. Lol Hell, I even see deluded 360 fanboys downplay the game themselves such as Portal 2 and LA Noire just because they’re better on the PS3. LOL
Anyway, enjoy your winnings. I’m more interested in the relevant multiplats for this year.
Portal 2 was always going to be the 3rd best version on ps3 after the pc and mac versions because of the heavy investment fatty gabe put into it lol.
LA noire is incredibly close for a game that was originally a ps3 exclusive, i’m holding out for the recently announced pc version(my imaginary pc will love that).
Hopefully the framerate dips on the struggling console versions will be wiped away on the pc version.
And what of the other 2 highest metacritic rated games of the year so far(mortal kombat and dirt 3).
I think you know the answer to who wins those
Mortal Kombat:
“Overall, NetherRealm has delivered a solid multi-platform release, and a convincing, entertaining reboot of the Mortal Kombat franchise. Minor graphical differences may favour the 360 version, but in terms of an actual purchasing decision, the PlayStation version gets the nod. Owners of the Sony console get an additional character in the form of God Of War’s Kratos – expertly integrated into the Mortal Kombat storyline, which is far more important than a few graphical niggles that are likely to go unnoticed by most people.”
” the PlayStation version gets the nod.” :3 Tee hee
Dirt 3?
PC version, duh. Trololololol
And although I love the new Mortal Kombat reboot and have been enjoying Dirt 3 immensely, they aren’t the highest rated multiplats of the year. lol Those go to the ones I mentioned earlier. The better-on-PS3 (compared to 360 at least) Portal 2 and LA Noire.
And remind me what version of mortal kombat won the h2h here on LOT? lol.
If you’re happy with your Kratos character compared to weaker visuals on the ps3 version then so be it.
There’s even a stage on the ps3 version that runs at sub-hd i believe to keep the framerate up
Full 720p on the 360 version.
I’d say MK and Dirt 3 are quite relevant releases that are better on 360 than ps3 lol.
” the PlayStation version gets the nod.”
;3
And that came from someone who EVERYONE accuses of being baised towards the 360. LOL
Anywho, relevant or not, the highest rated multiplats are better on the PS3.
‘the highest rated multiplats are better on the PS3′
Barely! But whatever rocks your boat lol.
The highest rated multiplats are even better on pc once LA noire arrives on a system that can do it justice
I just noticed…
“And remind me what version of mortal kombat won the h2h here on LOT?”
You sure like to back those certain H2Hs up… until Crysis 2 is brought up and you guys cry foul play. LOL
Anyway, I would have to say that the definitive and highest rated multiplat of the year goes to Portal 2 on the PS3. Not only does it feature the best graphics on console, it also comes with the superior of all superior versions for free and features cross platform play!
DDDD Bestest bang for the buck I have ever seen from an ex-PS3 basher. LOL
Also, Let’s hope LA Noire isn’t as botched as the PC version of GTA4.
GTA4 is actually very good on pc, you just need the rig to run it
It does struggle on slower systems, but the graphics and framerate are well above the console versions on a decent pc.
Completed Episodes From Liberty City just the other week on pc finally and it was far more enjoyable than the console versions.
Just don’t expect 60fps out of it lol.
Watching the comparison video @ Eurogamer, I noticed the texture loading issue the 360 version had at one point of the video? About 28 seconds into the video, you clearly notice bad texture loading twice around the window at the top of the house. I wonder if there are more instances through out the rest of the game.
I can’t believe people would say the PS3 version is better, when clearly the 360 has the advantage here. Both in performance and visual quality, the Xbox is superior. And the statement that the PS3 is only worse, because the developers haven’t fully utilized it’s potential may be true, but it doesn’t matter WHY the PS3 is worse – the fact is that it IS worse in those cases. I don’t give a damn what’s the reason.
Having played both versions I’ll say this. PS3 missing textures throughout the game is a load of crap. It’s one texture in various spots in the first area. This whole head2head takes place in the first area. For the rest of the game it looks near identical.
In the first cutscene when Alice falls into wonderland on PS3 her hair skips around (Also in one other cutscene later in the game) but is smooth on 360. IDK if this is still the case though as I haven’t finished it yet. The PS3 version ran like complete garbage when this game first came out, I put the game down for a few days and picked it back up and instantly noticed it was running much better. I believe it received a stealth patch, as there was a ton of slowdown and tearing originally as well.
360 get’s the win here. The only significant difference is the first area, but it is very noticeable.
I own the Xbox360 version (I really enjoy this game). But there is an annoying graphical flaw that bugs me. I think it is the Unreal Engine.
The textures slowly pop-in over surfaces. Not only can this be seen in the game (during action, not just chapter loading), but also the menu. Change Alice’s dress and often the textures come in slowly (milliseconds, but noticeable). When it happens, it pulls me out of the gaming moment – I like to remain immersed in my game.
Is this true on the PS3 version?
LoT, please add something like this to your comparison criteria.
LOL, the PS3 version looks incredibly washed out in comparison to the 360 version, & has even more framerate drops & screen tearing.
Oh, for those that keep saying that PS3 still has the upper hand on graphics in the exclusive category, not anymore. Gears of War 3, Forza 4, & the 360 version of Crysis 2 would like to have a word with you on that.
That was a straight up graphical beat down by the 360. Woah…never seen the ps3 look so bad as what I just saw in this analysis.
