Epic has announced plans “unveil a preview” of their next-generation game technology, Unreal Engine 4. The “unveiling” will take place at this year’s GDC in San Francisco, Develop Online reports.
Epic says “space is very limited, and appointments and non-disclosure agreements are required to see the Unreal Engine 4 presentation” and that preview will be available to “select licensees, partners and prospective customers”
In development since 2004 and masterminded by Epic founder Tim Sweeney, Unreal Engine 4 will more than likely support the PlayStation 4, Next Xbox and Nintendo’s Wii U. GDC 2012 begins March 5th.
Is anyone else excited to see what this engine is capable of? Let us know below.

Kindof odd… Wasn’t the UE3 unveiled only a couple years ago? I thought that engine was supposed a lot of juice in it, based off that Samaritan demo.
The first game using UE3 (Gears of War) was released in November of 2006. 5 years is a long time for an engine, even with all of the enhancements it has undergone. Looking back and watching the SAmaritan demo that you referenced should be plenty of evidence why UE4 is needed. The demo looks good but not a lot better than some of today’s best games. To make the leap to next-gen visuals they are going to need to make some pretty drastic changes.
I am looking forward to see what they have cooked up this time. The next 2 years are going to be a lot of fun to follow because of all of the new advances that new engines and consoles will bring.
They said origianly they were gonna put Gears 3 on the UE4 for next gen, this was in 2008 or 2009.
Hmmm. Maybe they are gonna have one of the best engines at the start of next gen and then let other developers surpass it, meanwhile they have licensed it to lots of other companies. EPIC want this to be very powerful (like UE3 was when it first released) and easy for people to develope on it, so they can make a buttload of $.
It’s a good plan, i don’t think they wan’t to make it to expensive and powerful (like cryengine 3, id tech 5 or frostbite 2) but just enough (more than most) so it is reliable.
Hopefully it doesn’t have mad texture streaming issues. Although, playing as a TMNT for the first 10 seconds of a round in gears has always been funny lol.
and guess what sony will have the best engine once again ummm the one in Uncharted and Killzone totally burn all other engines on consoles imagine if SONY had devs make games for a PC that would be EPIC!!! well hopefully the new playstation will be stronger than the PC being sold like when the PS3 came out and totally was ahead of PC stats in 2006 remember those days LOL SONY has cash to make a awesome engine but why doesn’t microsoft make a engine oh right they don’t care about quality the last exclusive GOW3 is running on the UE3 engine that is hella old ewww WTF!!!
