With the endless amount of rumors circulating in the gaming press about the “Next Xbox“, “PS4” and even the specs of the Wii U, it’s refreshing to see Quantic Dream’s David Cage basically say, we don’t need ‘em.
In a recent interview with Develop Online, David Cage was asked about the technical limitations of the PlayStation 3, and about “the next generation of consoles,”
“To be honest, I’m not that interested in technology or the next generation of consoles,” Cage said. “If we could continue with PlayStation 3 for another five years it would be fine with me,”
“Are there technical things I can’t do on PS3? Honestly, no,” he claimed. “The limitation is much more about the ideas we have”.
Quantic Dream revealed their new engine at GDC 2012 with their “Kara” demo. The engine is built to run on the PlayStation 3 and will be powering the studio’s next game — a game we hopefully hear more about at E3 in June.
Would you be happy with PlayStation 3′s graphical capabilities for the next five years? Give us your thoughts below.

Umm. no… Time for next gen. Consoles are holding back pc graphics at the moment and I would like to see that change. Nintendo really needs to do this. When you get used to playing at 1080p/60 on a PC that is setup like a console with a 55 inch screen, xbox 360 controller, nice racing wheel etc, you have a good idea of what the next get will look like. Anyone that doesnt want to see that I would say is spouting BS.. Why doesnt he ask his artists the same question ? I am positive their answers would be different. The last thing any good game artists wants to see is their vision distorted with anti aliasing and other crap. Bring on 1080p/60 ! It is overdue.
What’s holding back PC development is piracy. Do you think publishers will invest millions in PC specific development for it then to sell only a few thousand copies because everyone else pirates it. That is why PC get bad console ports = cheaper to make.
yeah, consoles are the culprit for crappy PC games. That’s why the so long awaited Diablo III looks like junk. Even a PS2 can probably run graphics like that!!
Actually the system to have the most pirated games is the 360. Piracy is nearly doubled on the 360 than it is on the PC. MICHELASSO, I usually agree with your points but this time you’re dead wrong. Games like Crysis and the Witcher 2 have some of the best graphics of any game to date and they started out on PC. Diablo III on the other hand was never meant to be a graphical marvel, It’s more like a Warcraft style game which has more to do with best performance over visuals so a wider range of computers with less power can play the game. I personally don’t even like Diablo III.
Patrick Bach, Asked specifically whether he feels if consoles are holding PC gaming back, Bach replied “Yes, Absolutely”, and added “That’s the biggest problem we have today”. He went on, saying that most games are made for the lowest common denominator (i.e. consoles), and that console games are generally ported to the PC with some higher resolution textures. Bach stressed that DICE is doing the opposite with Battlefield 3 — the PC version is the lead version and the console versions will be scaled down, as opposed to console version being scaled up to the PC.
@Billy Wrong. The problem with PC gaming is that it is too expensive and complicated for the average user. Unless you know how to build a pc yourself, getting a hold of a pc strong enough to run top of the line games would be incredibly expensive, and there are a lot of other problems that come along with pc gaming. Many of the top of the line games need the user to download new patches or update their drivers manually. This makes it hard for pc gaming to go mainstream. Not that many people have rigs good enough to run BF3 at the highest settings. Why would most developers bother making a game of that graphical quality even though the majority of people won’t be able to run it.
@ Michaelasso
You retard
Diablo 3 is a Blizzard Game and they don’t push PC Graphics cause they want their games be playable by as much people as possible.
Guess why D3 is the fastest selling PC game of all time?Hell it could even compare to Call of Duty Console Numbers.
PC Gaming is held back cause most developers have no skill and those with skill are rare or work for Sony(Naughty Dog and so on)
Look at Battlefield 3 on PC and see how much difference exists between consoles and PC.
EVERY GAME could look at least like BF3 on PC if they would make their games specific for PC hardware.
DICE has with BF3 a game where they can afford it cause MILLIONs of people want to buy their game…
But all those crying developers can’t build good games so they get pirated.
Why did million PC People buy Skyrim?Cause of the mods where the game gets twice as big(300 more enemies, thousands of new weapons, new dungeons, new quests) and looks allready like TES6.
But not thanks to Bethesda – They screwed PC Gamers over and brought faggy 360 graphics to the PC Version…Thanks to the Mod Community the game looks like a PC Game.
But not everyone has luck like Bethesda…Crytek with Crysis 2 got what they deserved.
Didn’t unleash the Power of their Engine till they patched the PC Version.Had the worst MP designed for Call of Duty faggots and got what they deserved > Low sales and massive pirating.
And everyone who doesn’t see how much better the PC Version of BF3 or The Witcher 2 look is a blind moron.
The 360 Crap Version of Witcher 2 isn’t even LOW PC Settings.
But they did a good job and developed the PC Version at first and brought one year later the version for the poor kids.
Consoles hold back PC Gaming…Better Console hardware = better graphics in general.
What a steaming pile of bullsh*t.
I really beg to differ. This gen has really been maxed out on both PS3 & 360. As much as I enjoyed Heavy Rain (one of this gen’s most original titles which I still own and never dared to even think of trading in), they are really talking out of the buttholes. This gen is nearly done. It’s time to move on soon (2013).
How do you know its been maxed out are you a developer. Lets wait and see what this years E3 brings i think there is still potential
The 360 is maxed out.
The PS3 is still getting pushed with The last of Us and other Sony Exclusives.
standard knee jerking, brains not engaged responses .
he’s not saying that he can do 1080p, 60 fps, 16 x aa etc etc on ps3. he’s making a point that there’s enough power to make games that are innovative and creative, and he can do everything that’s needed technically to make good games. More power will allow higher definition textures, more fps etc etc, but wont bring with it creativity and good games automatically.
if anything, developers are going to get less creative, as publishers wont sanction creative ideas, in case they fail, as developing games next gen will cost fortune, meaning less profit and even possibly losing money if a game flops, so expect to see more and more generic, blockbuster sequels.
Devs are not excited about next gen hardware as a whole, as unless they have a huge ip sequel in development, they cant get them published, and publishers are forcing them to make games more generic and with less creativity. hence the move towards mobile phone and indy gaming, where theres lots of money to be made and some creativity.
im actually more excited these days about the idea of devs using wiiu for indy gaming as its cheap to program for than ps4/720. hopefully will be some genuinely creative games.
As for console gaming holding back pc gaming, its more that cost of development holding back pc graphics. The whole gaming industry and model is messed up right now. It costs far too much to develop AAA games, with average(not AAA, RDR and GTA reportedly cost 100 mil) games costing 30 million dollars minimum, with publicity another 10 mil minimum. developing games that would stretch pc’s would cost even more, and then you have issue of making sure most pc’s can run them anyway. How many devs have games that will sell enough to justify costs?? Thats the issue now, costs are too high, and only a handful of big ip’s sell enough to make it worthwhile, so publishers keep trying to aim games at consumers which resemble those huge selling ip’s. hence endless list of fps’s.
i want the new gen consoles to come faster … i want a mind fucking blowing consoles, actually a new gen consoles might as well reduce the game development time.
Hmmm. Not sure about this one. With most games looking familiar and similar these days I think maybe it IS time for next gen as nothing has really broken any boundaries in the last 12 months or so.
But on the other hand, I like the way this guy thinks. An old school developer. He obviously understands the term “software bloat”, where developers ideas get lazy and they just rely on new-tech to get the “wow” factor, instead of new ideas and engines within the current scope.
This guy’s full of it. Anyone can make a nice looking demo. How about making it run at 1080/60? Yeah, didn’t think so David Cage…whoever the hell you are.
It annoys me when devs and people say that. sure it can keep making games, but most games these days are pushing game graphics real hard(except cod) and the consoles suffer. with games being at Sub hd reso with Input lag(bf3) and horrible frame rates (crysis) and screen tearing (all) and limited player count (all) yes we need an upgrade. I want to play battlefield 3 on ps3 at ultra hd at 60+ fps with 64 players with no input lag or screen tearing and 3d at 120fps (60 per eye) would be nice.
How about a decent walking mechanic? They couldn’t even get that right.
