There’s been some concern over DICE’s announcement to include optional installs for high resolution texture packs on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 amongst console owners this week. The main issue being that both consoles could possibly drop frames with the texture pack enabled. Well today, DICE’s Johan Andersson clarified all such concerns…

So there you have it, the high resolution texture pack shouldn’t alter Battlefield 3′s performance on consoles in any way, seeing how the game was designed to use it. What remains to be seen is if texture steaming will be an issue. Well we’re only two weeks away from this one being released, and we can’t wait to see the finished product from DICE with our own eyes. We’ll see you on the Battlefield October 25th.

I will wait a full H2H before buy it. Lets hope the consoles dont have texture steaming problems or huge amount of screan tear.
there is no hope that this game will not have screen tear.
You’re absolutely right. All of DICE’s games tear because they don’t give a f**k.
Companies that actually care, are like Naughty Dog and Guerrilla Games…. they triple-buffer their games.
it would be impossible to triple buffer battlefield on consoles there is such things as limitations. killzone and uncharted don’t come close to the strain a game like battlefield produces, don’t compare linear games to open games makes no sense, make uncharted 10 times more open throw in 10 times the amount of enemies and destruction and i guarantee the game would not run, uncharted dnt do alot of things other games do, it focuses on stuff its good at, which is lots of videos, linear levels and scripted scenes.
@smooth.
Wow, dude… Have you ever played an Uncharted or Killzone game? Just how open do you really expect battlefield 3 to be, exactly???
@Bloodios.
corridor shooter…??? Really…????
yeah; “I’m not suggesting, I’m telling you…” You’ve never played any Killzone game to call it a “corridor shooter”…
@Smooth
Crysis 2 doesn’t have any screen tearing on the PS3 version and I think it looks better than Battlefield 3.
Like I said before… look at ALL of DICE’s games… they ALL have screen tearing. I will never trust a game from them.
Was Mirror’s Edge a technically demanding game? I think DICE just suck at programming on consoles.
they tear because there is too much going on for a console to render and process -_-
crysis 2 was pretty, yes. lots of destruction, no. scripted destruction, yes.
@MoneySha
Next to, say, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 ? Yeah, they are corridor shooters. You can deny the fact that I owned a copy of both Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 all you like, but I know it (and God also knows it) that I’m not lying. As a matter of fact, I had a lot of fun with the both the campaign and the multiplayer of both games (more in Killzone 2 though, since I didn’t like the handling of the guns in the Killzone 3 as much.)
To that end though, who cares if it’s a series of corridor shooters? I like them, and I bought them because they appeal to me. On the other hand, I have only borrowed the Bad Company games and never felt convinced enough to buy them for myself (Battlefield 3 might change that, who knows.)
Crysis 2 on PS3 doesn’t tear but bear in mind the following-
Sub HD
Crappy frame rate
TBH you get over screen tear after a while of playing it. Happened with BC2. What I can’t get over is the lack of distant particle and alpha effects(explosions). That gets to me. E.G. In BC2 firing mortars and not seeing anything happening except sounds. -_-
Firstly , as bloodios stated kz3 and uc2 are really very linear in nature, and this impacts highly on how they are able to produce an engine that’s able to run so smoothly and without tear etc. Bc2/bf3 engines are calculating much larger maps , with larger amounts of players and with vehicles and greater amounts of destruction, that’s what is punishing on the CPU . Uc2/kz3 are set in small areas ( comparitively ) and the CPU is only having to calculate a minimal amount of things going on ( albeit in fantastic detail ). There’s no comparison, and crysis 2 is also ridiculously linear in comparison and sub hd and with a ropey framerate to boot.
Bc2 was ridiculously good even with some screen tear and pop in , which tbh became a non issue , as there was much more important things goings on, like enjoying playing the game
I expect some pop in and screen tear on bf3 tbh, but hopefully minimal, and tbh, I couldn’t give a flying ferret either. It will still be a fantastic squad based game.
As for these texture packs, the textures hopefully shouldn’t cause too much stress on engine, as I don’t think it will be as heavy duty streaming of textures as in Rage, where the entire world is constructed of streamed textures, whereas this isn’t case in bf3. The fact they’re on hard drive should in effect lead to quick streaming and minimal stress on engine, possibly less stressful than having to stream lower res textures from disk and then generate them ( especially blu ray). Time will tell I guess.

I would also add KZ/UC games have been developed exclusively for one platform while DICE have to make a multi-platform game engine which has to take into account PC/360 in more or less equal measure. And I laugh at those who think KZ/UC aren’t heavily scripted and linear. Shove a mongoose from Halo in Killzone and each level would be over 5 mins.
But I would like to point out there’s nothing wrong with linear games, I love em as much as open world games. In fact I would rank Uncharted series as my favourite games this gen and that is imo a heavily scripted and small world linear game.
Heavily scripted? ovcourse it is lol its liek a 15 hour long movie adventure game, how could it not be scripted? with wondefrull scripted events and 90% even mroe wonderfull gameplay
Great game. Just as linier as Gears, its good, the way its meant to be played, you do come across as a bit of a fanboy trying to hide it though lol, and it does really show pal.
Justin, apart from calling me a fanboy (ahem and thats makes you?) I don’t understand the point you’re trying to make.
Then I guess it would be fair to say that I hope it doesn’t have too much tearing. Currently, the PS3 has a gross percentage of screen tearing, it makes me sick. The CEO from DICE said that’s not the final code, but we shall see. I am anticipating LOT’s analysis.
I love how people, confuse the beta of games with the final code… It just brings out and shows the true ignorants of most of you…
I think the beta was a mistake just because people don’t know what the term “Beta” means. They think that’s going to be the finished product.
Bla bla bla…. Bla bla vla?
How does the high resolution textures pack work anyway ? Are they already in the game and installing them will only help to significantly reduce the time the system takes to stream those textures in ? Or will the textures of the uninstalled version look somewhat like that of Rage, and installing the pack will help pump it up to something close to Uncharted 3 ’s level ?
its prob going to ask you for the first time u run that game if u want to install it and all it does is prob add alot more detail to the game itself im going to do it and if it causes screen tearing ill just dele it from my hd and go from there but dice is gonna make this game great bs there competing with cod and if they want to win with there 30 fps they need this to run perfect with the install
Think Crysis 2 hi res pack for th PC. Replaces the textures with hi res ones. Also I highly doubt the hi res pack won’t affect performance in any way.
well even if it’s crappy or not,i will buy it and
i’ve also seen the imroved ps3 footage on ign.(i know that the game won’t dissapoint)
Should be no problem on the ps3 but the failbox version maybe not. Tried the beta on failbox at my friends house and it looked horrible compared to the superior PS3 version and it struggled to maintain a stable framerate.
ok
Get lost sad act.
Bit OTT there, PS3FTW… then again with a name like that!
As it goes, the 360 DID have quite poor framerate in the beta compared to that of the PS3 and/or PC.
You do have to remember though, it was very old code and more than likely optimised for PS3 rather than 360 as it is EA/DICE we are talking about.
I’m quite sure the final code will run just fine.

GET THE F*CK OUT, AGAIN? good day to be a “xbot”, eh ps3 fanboys?
And what you gonna do? Sue them? Ooops you can’t you gave that right away to Sony. Next year you’ll be giving away your first born. Glad I chose failbox instead of superior ps3.
)
If I understand the story correctly, the attack happened through someone attempting a lot of username/password combos that they got from elsewhere. That’s why most of the log in attempts failed. So it isn’t necessarily the PSN’s fault here. Maybe the info was from the original breach, but if someone hasn’t changed their password by now, they are kind of asking for it.
As for the TOS, I’m hoping a significant portion of the PS3 fan base had enough reading comprehension and concern for consumer rights to send Sony an opt-out letter.
(Wishful thinking, I know)
Even if they never sue or have reason to sue, doing so merely preserves all the rights they had prior to the latest TOS update.
You suck dude, try harder.
DEVILTRY, you should learn to read before posting.
What has this got to do with Sony? Data was stolen ELSEWHERE and then used against the PSN to try and gain access. Same thing happens to millions of sites every day.
Difference here, Sony told us. Shows that the new software and security team they have is working.
So yes, it’s a good day to like what Sony have done.
Smooth,You shouldn’t dog on Uc it doesn’t need to have 50 players and non linear to be a great game.BF looks great ”Pc version owns RL” but yea layoff taking shit about Uc and Kz.
