According to recent articles from both PSM3 and Xbox World magazines, this is what PS4 and the next Xbox will be capable of in terms of visuals…
With the help of Codemasters’ lead artist Mike Smith and Dead End Thrills techmaster Duncan Harris, both magazines show us not only what PS4 and the next Xbox will be capable of in terms of visuals but also in terms of scale, lighting, landscapes, AI and procedural generation [says the report from CVG]. Even more interesting is that the screenshots running in PSM3 are from tech that echoes reported specs of the PlayStation 4. Below is a quote from Smith:
“If you look at the amount of effort that goes into lighting at companies like Pixar, we’re quite some way away from being able to leverage that control. (But) once we have a toolset to do that, art directors can go crazy.” said Smith.

So what do you think? If these two screens are any kind of representation of what the “next generation” of consoles will be capable of are you impressed? Let us know below.

Nothing PC’s can’t do already.
That lady bug is from a really old Radeon demo. It can NOT run at 60fps, or even 30fps, on the upcoming console hardware (@ 1080p) if it can at all. For those who don’t know, Radeons are a series of video cards made by AMD (formerly ATI).
The rumoured GPU the Xbox 720 will use is a Radeon HD 6670 which is a low end card from the 6000 series from 2010.
Neo Cyrus, who made you the expert? You seem to have no idea what writing software for hardware and for APIs like Direct-X means in terms of performance penalty, overhead, etc.
Get back when you have some exprience with assembler and Java/.NET
Sadly I don’t give two shits about PC exclusives besides Diablo 3. So do many gamers.
Devil it’s more like you don’t seem to understand how much more processing 1920×1080 takes than the standard 960×540 used on consoles now which is sold as “720p” (it’s internally stretched to that). But hey, don’t let reality keep you away from your delusions. Enjoy your low resolution aliasing and 20fps.
That first screen is actually from an ATI demo though like Neo said. I have it installed.
im starting to think so what?; games are already taking 3, 4 years to make, and this will go up to 10-15 years if you are reaching the full potential. we should be happy with games like unchartered 2 and 3. i aint waiting 10 years for a game to come out.
I’m not ready to spend all that cash for next gen, i’m still very happy with the work that devs are still cranking out on the current consoles
How exactly is adding more vegetation or high res lady bug going to make a game more fun?
Seriously, I play games on the PC and they aren’t more fun than the console counterparts. Plus, PC games aren’t that amazing looking to me anyway. Yes, I crank the settings up to the absolute highest but there’s a certain point where I just don’t see much of a difference between the different settings. I think PC elitists only play games based on how good they look. Do they even play the stupid games… or do they just walk around and look at the textures?
When I’m playing a game on a console, I focus on the game, not the graphics. Yes, I admire Uncharted 3′s graphics but the story is so much better than most games out there right now… not even considering the graphics. If other companies could get the gameplay and story right, we’d have a lot more fun games instead of the same old generic shooters that claim to be the best looking games, but not very fun to actually play.
I for one like to play games on the PC simply because I can pretty much make it run the way I want it to. I also have a Ps3 but there are sometimes performance issues and there’s also the lack of a mouse. Take for example Assassins’s Creed Brotherhood. For some unexplainable reason it lags heavily on my Ps3 in Rome and I don’t know how to fix it. I also had problems with really low frame rates in Lost Planet 2 and Dark Souls. These kinds of problems directly affect the gameplay. At least on PC you can disable V-sync or lower the settings. This is pretty much my reason for playing on PC but as long as a game runs well and is fun to play I have no problems playing it on consoles. I even find some games better to play with a controller.
I play on PC (and stand beside it through thick and thin) rather than consoles for the following reasons (Yes, I know there are SOME exceptions to the list im about to post, but the heavy majority falls under both consoles and titles for them)
: Free online
: Better graphics (including sharper textures, much higher AA, Actual scalable graphics, Dx10/11, ect)
: Mods
: Better overall communities (applies both to the overall players you will encounter and the communities that keep the game alive well after the game launches. unreal tourn 1 still has active servers. Some guy just modded elder scrolls 3 to look better than skyrim)
: The ability to chose my server
: more configurations (includes controllers (which the sheer ammount of key assignments we can place on the controllers makes them far better than the console counterparts, K&M layout, flight sticks, ect)
: Better sound (almost all current console games are set for 5.1 when PC can crank them up to 9.1 or higher. While this varies from game to game, most games have the PC releases sound unlocked for sound cards)
: Multi function. (yes, xbox can listen to music when playing games in most cases, but theres no denying the amount of things we can do while playing a game or even in general.)
: Better online experience (good example of this, but not the only one, is BF3. Consoles are cut off at 24 while pc has 40 more players per server. it makes a huge difference in the game)
: Faster patches (This one is a 50/50. because the PC has no overhead saying the patch has to pass through sony/microsofts quality tests, we can get it up to 4 weeks before consoles. The reason I give it a 50/50 reason is because 8/10 times, the publisher will withhold all patches until they can release them at the same time.)
There are more reasons, but this is a good amount to show why PC is better than consoles and why we stand by them.
And honestly, if thats the best the next console cycle can do and people are amazed by it, then gabe newel was right. Consoles are holding back progress in both graphics and ideas.
Let’s see, for my gaming device I couldn’t give a damn about other purposes it can deliver. IT’S. A. GAMING. DEVICE. If it can make coffee too – nice, but still a non factor for a gaming device.
Better online experience? With Battlefield 3? My ears are bleeding from coworkers’ complaints about cheaters.
Keyboard + mouse as in offering more customization with buttons? There are two games I need my Razer Naga’s extra 14 buttons – WoW and SWTOR. For anything else – mouse can go fuck itself. I have enough buttons on my controller and their placement make sense. And I despise mouse for gaming. Right now with controller I can sit on a sofa, I can lean all the way back on my sofa, I can lie on my god damn sofa and still play perfectly. While with that god damn mouse my hands are LOCKED onto table. screw mouse
Better sound? 9.1 vs 5.1… Okay, this argument is so dumb that writing a counter argument is a waste of time.
Faster patches – slower DLCs. Considering consoles have only one hardware configuration to test and have less bugs, I’d go with faster DLCs.
Bunny, how can you enjoy all those (very arguable) beautiful pluses if on PC you’ve got half of the AAA games? hmm? Not to mention the indie games often consoles exclusives.
well…there are SOME games that need very good graphics, Skyrim for example where immersion is a big part of the game, but theres just a few games where immersion is highly enjoyed and still is not necessary, im playing skyrim on the ps3 and enjoying every second of it
i mean, yes, the eye candy is great but for a few seconds then you start playing the game
SO modded Crysis 1 and an 3 year old AMD tech demo
The last of us trailer looks just as good as that….
true that, nothing crysis, unchartered, killzone, heavy rain, kara can’t do…and the last of us trailer/game.
I’m expecting much more from next gen consoles than what is being rendered in these screens.
If it’s not a hupe leap graphically, then whats the point of releasing new consoles?
killzone, heavy rain, uncharterd 3, kara, crysis, the last of us on ps3…can emulate that, and vid games should be more about gameplay…
the move from SD to HD is good enough for me. (ps2 to ps3).
Forget next gen, the ps3 has plenty of horse power in it. We just need more third party devs to stop bein lazy and use the ps3 to its full potential instead of putting the xbox 1st
.
lol the forest picture looks like a chapter 6 in uncharted 3 or the last of us trailer….
Spending money on upgrading PC’s is all the rage nowadays, So I’m damn sure there is enough people out there including myself that throw $300-$600 at a new console. Hell the more expensive the better, I just don’t want some cheap tinker toy! The bar should be set high.
I am honestly getting sick of the PC gamers arguments. Most of us don’t want to spend a fortune in a power machine, especially a desktop. Many of us bought a laptop already because we need them to be mobile. So to spend another.. what? 800-1000 euro just for the HW is pointless. Unless, like many PC gamers do, one plans to get the game from free in the bay full of pirates or any other Torrent Shop.
Also with consoles we get games the PC gamers are crying for. Demon’s and Dark Souls in terms of combat mechanics are for sure much better than any PC game. Graphically they still deliver a lot, because even if a little sub-HD they are ARTISTIC. And those are just two of the many. The list of consoles only games is too long.
Do multiplatform games generally look and perform better in powerful PCs? Sure. It’s like to ask if the is Pope Catholic. But do we need that extra polishment? Not me. Better performances yes, in some games. Tearing and frame rate drops with the graphics usually limited to 720p @30 fps are the plague of this console generation. Maybe if MS waited another year instead of pushing the market we would have had HW more in line. Still with many games they do an excellent job, especially with the console exclusives.
In any case my mind words: Next gen MS and Sony consoles will be the last one. For a very long time at least. The human eye at a distance can’t really go above 1080p. 60 fps is more than enough. Pure realism doesn’t matter. Stylized games at 720p with the right number of polygons often look much better than very realistic ones. At that point the pro PC fan base will be dead. Because the battle will be on the IPs and services. Not to mention the user friendliness of starting the console and its games with a controller and not with the ugly keyboard.
PS: This is a copy ‘n paste of a comment i wrote in another article. I just feel it fits in here perfectly.
consoles are holding the pc back
