UPDATE: Sony has officially announced God of War: Ascension. The description below comes from their official Youtube page which reveals the game is a prequel.
“God of War fans rejoice! Infamous Spartan warrior Kratos is preparing to return to the PlayStation 3 system. This brand new trailer marks the official unveiling to the world of forthcoming game, God of War: Ascension.”
“The most ambitious God of War adventure in the series so far, God of War: Ascension takes us right back to where it all began. Discover the origins of Kratos as he takes his first steps on a now legendary quest for freedom and vengeance.”
ORIGINAL: That big announcement Sony was teasing the other day — one many thought to be regarding a new God of War game — turns out to be, a new God of War game, as revealed by web retailer Amazon. The best part is, it’s coming to PlayStation 3.
The (accidental) reveal gives the game’s name — God of War: Ascension, a trailer, temporary box art, and the brief product description seen below. The official announcement from Sony should come later today. If so, we’ll update this post with additional details. In the mean time, enjoy the trailer below.

This is just sad… Kratos already destroyed the world and now we get to go back in time a 3rd time. Does this mean inferior mechanics or is Santa Montica Studios ready to take a dump on continuity by having this “pre-God of War” Kratos fight titans if it is “Ambitious” as they claim it to be. That must mean they’re trying not to fuck it up without Jaffe… again. I mean hope is what comes from Kratos who kills everyone and Zeus, the worse evil is only evil because Kratos opened Pandora’s Box even though he committed evil acts beforehand (Deimos, Prometheus tortured, Daedulus, etc) I call BS! I liked the series for it’s simple yet epic story and well-rounded gameplay but since 3, this series is dead to me. RIP Kratos.

Hmmm, this is strange. I thought he already avenged his family and found redemption after GOW3? I’ll wait for an official announcement from Sony before getting to excited. Even so, how much further can they stretch this? But i do have faith in Santa Monica.
Not sure if this will turn out good or bad but I personally think they should’ve just end the series at third installment. Well, this issue aside… I think there should be a God of War title (Slaughter of The Gods would have been a more fitting name in my opinion) for the PlayStation Vita at some point… just to boost the sale of the system.

I’d prefer it to be a prequel over a sequel anyway. It would be stupid to continue a story that has already ended, and we know little of Kratos before GoW1 started other than he was a Spartan general with a family. God of War 3 was a great game so I am unsure why people are complaining. People seem to be getting upset with Santa Monica for making a new God of War. They haven’t quite milked the franchise yet guys, so stop acting like they have.
%SPOILERS% Are you saying that creating a character (Deimos) for a sake of one game only to be in one game isn’t milking? He was brought up vaguely in 3 and never spoken of before. It seems like they’ve lost any path to go with the series. Deimos was kidnapped as a child and died 10 minutes after Kratos found him. How is this not milking the series? In the orig. God of War, Kratos past is explained well to keep you in suspense but we already know what happened. He was a power-hungry tyrant after gaining Ares Blades of Chaos up until he murdered his family as was set up by Ares thus began Blades of Olympus>GOW>GOW2>etc. All I can see them doing here is shoehorning Stig Asmussen’s detrimental story plots (or lack there of) to shape the story in the way he sees it. (Full of Deus ex Machinas) Mario can be milked effectively because it’s premise is so basic that believability can be manipulative at a whim with very little or no damage. In God of War which has an actual plot, can only be manipulated so many times before Cohesive Narrative is crossed, destroying any impact it could have had. If this isn’t the milking the GOW franchise then I don’t know what it.
I think this isn’t a prequel. I have a feeling this is a real sequel to the GoW trilogy. A prequel would probably be on the PS VITA.
Maybe this is about Kratos trapped in hell (again.. lol).
There, he mets gods/people or whatever and learns about some kind of secret. He travel back in time like in GoW 2 and tries to learn the truth about whatever shit this is about.
Or if it’s really a prequel, it is also nice.
Save a sequel for PS4 maybe?
Kratos did avenge his family in the third game. Did you guys listen to the trailer? The narrator is just telling you the basic stroy and then says there was a time when Kratos wasn’t a god. Hence, before he became the God of War. I think this is a good direction. We don’t get to play as some hack n slash monster anymore. He’s not going to have powers. It’s just going to be a normal guy named Kratos this time.
Just to clarify. Im still really excited about a new GOW game and im sure it’s still going to rock. Just a bit confused about the story side of things. But all will be revealed in good time i suppose.
Prequel, family vengeance, blah blah. who cares! its a new GOW game, and one thing is certain. Its going to be AWESOME! GOW3 was one of the best games I have EVER played. Cannot wait for this. Just shut up Sony, release the game, and take my money!

I think it will be good even if it might be a forced addition. I don’t really care that much about milking as long as the games are good and lots of effort has been put into them. GOW Ascension can hardly be called a 1 year rehash like MW3 so can it really be called milking? I guess we’ll have to see when it comes out whether it’s good or not. I’ve never been much for story consistency since I rarely notice these things but let’s hope it all makes sense in the end. Heck, I just liked killing stuff in spectacular fashion.

Finally a reason to turn on my ps3 again.
