Review

“Welcome to your doom!

F A S T F O C U S

+ GOOD:

  • Incredible sound effects in 1989
  • Transforming into wild animals is cool.
  • Decent arcade conversion for its’ time.

- BAD:

  • Only five short stages.
  • The three ”basic” attacks are boring.
  • Boo to the enemies, they stink.
altered_beast_01.jpg altered_beast_03.jpg The story of Altered Beast has you playing as a fallen centurion. At the game’s start you are commanded by Zeus to “rise from your grave” in hopes that you can rescue his daughter Athena from the evil demon god – Neff. That particular line, “rise from your grave” happens to be one of the only memorable things about Altered Beast. Oh and of course Neffs’ awesome “Welcome to your doom!” line which he’ll yell to you in each stage ending boss battle with him.

I know, lines of speech are the only memorable things in an otherwise average game, why? Well, when you first powered on Altered Beast and heard Zeus beckon those words to you in crystal clear sound (which wasn’t really that crystal clear), you had to be impressed. I for one couldn’t believe my ears. The best sound effect I had heard in a console game up to that point was “We’re bad!”, from the Data East NES game Bad Dudes. When I heard and saw Altered Beast over a friends house for the first time, I knew it was almost time to put my ole favorite, the 8-bit NES on the shelf, and begin saving for Segas’ new 16-bit machine.

altered_beast_11.jpg Now onto the gameplay of Altered Beast. It’s a conversion of Sega’s side-scrolling beat-em-up released in arcades in 1988. Sega kept it as close as they could to the original, leaving the arcade’s 2-player simultaneously play intact. Unfortunately, this does not improve the game in any way. It’s often too crowded on the screen as it is. Your character is huge and so are your enemies giving you a cramped feeling while playing. You move left and right and have three buttons, punch, kick and jump. Not too much combat here for a beat-em-up that’s for sure.

In each of the game’s five very short stages you’ll face the same five or six fairly lame undead creatures. Within each stage, you’ll have to obtain three “Spirit Balls” (or power-ups) from defeating three white two-headed wolves. The first of these power-ups will give you “giant-man” strength. The second grants you “superman” strength and the third will transform you into a mighty Altered Beast, giving the player some extremely powerful abilities and a very cool transformation screen. The five transformations include the Werewolf, Ware-dragon, Ware-bear,Were-tiger, and for the game’s finally you’ll finish off Neff using the Golden Werewolf.

Overall

That’s basically it for Altered Beast. Originating from the arcades there’s almost no replay value. The game is very short. Not being able to move your character up or down in the field of play makes it easy for enemies to inflict the common cheap hit. Its’ graphics were amazing when released but were quickly put to shame by other games on the system within a year. Its’ sound effects however will always be remembered, as well as the games “transformation screen”. Both had major impacts on the gamers who experienced them. The game is available on the Wii Virtual Console, but for the $8.00 price tag, its not even close to worth it. If you really want to play it, the recently released “Sonic’s Genesis Collection” (Xbox 360 & PS3), and the PS2’s “Sega Genesis Collection” from 2007 are both much better deals. Now Altered Beast…back into your grave!

This game was awesome. :P One of my favourites from when I was a child. Morphing into those big beefy guys was cool!

    • Aaron Aaron says:

Yeah, it’s got that nostalgia factor going for it for me as well. It’s just as the Genesis got more and more games, I realized AB was nothing special.

I’ll never forget it though! :)

  2. Mark Rozen Lavron415 says:

This was the most awesome-ist game ever! When I was a kid, I was all over this game! It was fun to shoot fireballs from a wolf or a bear or something…I don’t remember though…hmmm

  3. Jason Jason says:

what a game! only 1 question though, why doesn’t his head grow?

  4. Corey Corey says:

“Arise from the grave my son.” Ah, the most memorable muffled voice of all time.

  5. John John says:

I played this game in the arcades first. I thought the game was pretty awesome on the Sega too, but I don’t think I ever got past the second stage.
