+ GOOD:
  • Upgradeable Weapons
  • Alfred Ashford
  • 180 degree turn
- BAD:
  • Some extremely long load times
  • Using the X button to walk up small stairs
  • Steve Burnside in battle mode

Resident Evil Code: Veronica begins with Claire waking up in a military prison. Soon after her arrival the base is attacked by an unknown group. In all the commotion Claire is able to escape her captors. After a CGI movie the player is thrust right into zombie filled action. Claire must escape the prison utilizing all her puzzle solving and zombie killing skills.

Code: Veronica was the first RE to take place in multiple locations. The first half of the game or Disc 1 will take Claire from the prison, to a military base, then to the Ashford family residence, and finally to an airport. Most of Claire’s quest takes place in the Ashford family’s home. This is by far the craziest family I have encountered in a game or even other media. They make the “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” family look like the “Brady Bunch”. Throughout Claire’s romp through their home she will be greeted by brother Alfred and a “Psycho” like appearance of sister Alexia.Claire battles her way through the lunacy and terror of the mansion only to escape in a cargo plane which crash lands at a secret Antartic base.

This is where Disc 2 begins and the player gets to use older brother Chris. He has been searching frantically for his sister after receiving a call from Leon. As usual Chris has greater endurance and can handle the firearms much better. As Chis you must battle your way throught the base to meet up with your sister and defeat the Ashfords as well as stopping Umbrella.

Unlike other REs you do not have a choice as which character to use, but they are story specific. Claire, Chris and Steve Burnside are all playable characters at there respective plot points in the game. The pacing of the story is excellent. This is actually a good thing since each character has distinct skills different from one another.

Being the fourth installment in the series CV brings out some technical changes as well as enhancing old ones. Code: Veronica was developed simultaneously with RE 3 Nemesis. Playing both games one can see the similarities. CV keeps the newly instituted 180 degree turn which allows the player the ability to quickly spin and run for cover. This was exteremely important in RE 3 in escaping the Nemesis as well as being the only way to defeat oune of the bosses later on in CV. CV also keeps the explosive barrels and the ability to use parts to upgrade your weapons and storage space. Code :Veronica’s developers added a majotr upgrade to the game itself. This was the first RE to use 3D backgrounds not prerendered ones. Game wise CV introduced the explosive arrow crossbow and the anti-BOW rounds for the grenade launcher. The player can also dual-wield pistols to target multiple enemies or do extreme damage to one. As with all RE titles the speed at which you finish the game grants all types of unlockacles. Weapons, costumes, and even the extra Battle Mode is here. Even beating Battle Mode with the five characters has its own unlockables.

Overall
REC:V was the first RE not to be built for the Sony. Capcom created the game specifically for the Dreamcast. Although some problems arose the game was finally released in 2000 one year after RE 3. Code: Veronica brings in my opinion the best RE adventure to date. It may not have the action of RE 4 or the initial shock value of the first RE, but the story, gameplay, and Alfred Ashford make this game a true treasure. If you can’t dig out your Dreamcast, I highly recommend picking up the PS2 version. The added cut scenes in Code: Veronica X just add to the overall excellence of this game.

What an awesome RE! Seeing the Ashford kids pulling the wings off a butterfly is still one of the most disturbing CG movies I’ve seen in a game, also one of my favorites. :)

Awesome review and video, I loved this game. I can’t remember can you move while you reload or shoot?

You know RE5 looks better than killzone 2. Just admit it, you’ll sleep better.

You can’t move at all just like RE5. The controls are basically the same since RE 3 Nemesis. I think thats what all the fuss was about with RE 5 the control just felt antiquated when the demo came out. To someone like myself who grew up with the RE series I’m glad Capcom didn’t change it to the run and gun style. Although I really did enjoy Dead Space.

I agree with you for the most part, but the fact that the enemies can move and shoot but you can’t is stupid. And I don’t mean having Chris run and gun but slowing moving when firing would have made this game AAA and feel more natural. And come on at least allow players to move out of harms way while reloading. BTW Jaime the characters are the best I’ve seen but Killzone 2 destroys this game in every other technical aspect.

I know I just wanted to get you fired up on a KZ 2 rampage.. Anyhow, I’m really frustrated with the controls but I’m still having a great time with the game. The characters and environments are visually incredible. However, I can’t help to think how good this game could be if the controls were just a little more fluent. I know they wanted to stay with the RE style but they could have balanced the control better.

I’m thinking of getting this game. I’ve now played Resident Evil 5 (which was great) watched RE: Degeneration, RE, RE: Apocolypse and RE: Extinction (all were good except the last one) and I think I’ve got a bit of a RE fever coming on.

The intro has only made my urge to play the older RE games even stronger! Thanks for putting it up, it was an interesting watch.

Oh and on the other debate here, yeah, KZ 2 does kill RE 5 visually but in the cutscene department there’s not much of a contest (in my opinion) and also storywise RE 5 blows KZ 2 away. However, both of the games have pretty awkward controls (RE 5 is a little clunky at first, and so is KZ 2 because the guns seem ‘heavy’).

If I were to recommend to anyone one reason to get a PS3, it’d have to be for Metal Gear Solid 4. Or maybe God of War III.
