We go Head2Head with Street Fighter IV to see which console can perform a better Hadouken.

Capcom has  finally released Street Fighter IV after a slight delay in production. We sat down with SF4 for the Xbox 360 and PS3 and had to admit, it was sure worth the wait. With high definition, super fast moves, and a great new style, SF4 can easily allow itself to be called a classic upon release.  But before we can crown the game a total success, we had to look at the game on each console.

Load times come in at a blistering 8 seconds from when you select the level to play to in game match on the Xbox360. But when it came to the PS3 times more then doubled. The average load time from level select to in game match was over 20 seconds. While these numbers aren’t huge, it can certainly add up over time and matches since we’re sure you won’t be playing only one match. When SF4 was installed onto the PS3’s hard drive, the load times dropped to 8 seconds as well, but the install time was over 10 minutes and took up around 2 gig’s.  SF4 did not have an install on the Xbox 360 version. We’re just not sure what’s wrong at Capcom camp. Soul Caliber IV, a more graphically intense fighting game, load at the same times on both systems without an install.

When it comes to quality SF4 is top notch but once again the PS3 got gimped. To start with the PS3 only supported up to 720p while the Xbox 360 could perform at 1080p, upscaled of course. While in game we noticed that the PS3 had no anti-aliasing. Jaggies were everywhere and it wasn’t pretty nor acceptable. It was also noted that certain textures were blurry on the PS3 although characters were not affected. Our biggest issue came from boats in the background not casting shadows. We couldn’t explain it. There were other minor mishaps on the PS3, such as missing specular highlights on the waterfalls in the South America Pitch Black Jungle stage. Just sloppy overlooks on the port team. But the one thing the PS3 team did right was matching the Xbox 360 and PS3 colors. Typically one is either washed out and the other too dark.

We tested the Mad Catz controller for the Xbox 360 and found it superior to the standard controller. However PS3 mopped the floor in this catagory. Thanks to PS3’s USB ports we were able to hook up the Street Fighter 2 Anniversary arcade stick. It’s nice to have an arcade stick built for a previous game to work flawlessly with newer releases.

In the end the win goes to Xbox 360. We have to say though the PS3 was very close, and we know that if you have this game on the PS3 you’ll still be very happy. These companies need to step up though when it comes to porting. Double the load time unless the game is installed is just plain lazy. Missing boat shadow is also lazy. Lower textures, lack of antialiasing and no option for 1080p is down right an insult to consumers. You can’t look at these faults and say PS3 just isn’t capable.

G R A P H I C S
PS3 - Win Slightly sharper textures, boats with shadows, and the ability to go 1080p gives Xbox the easy point. Xbox 360 - Win
P E R F O R M A N C E
PS3 - Win Once this games gets running hold back, it’s a blast. It’s a tie here. Xbox 360 - Win
C O N T R O L
PS3 - Win The PS3 has the better d-pad out of the box and also has the ability to attach USB devices such as the Street Fighter 2 Anniversary Arcade stick. Xbox 360 - Win
L O A D I N G
PS3 - Win Xbox can load a level in around 8 seconds without a 2 gig install. Xbox 360 - Win
O U T C O M E
Xbox 360 - Win In the words of the famous announcer, “PS3…YOU LOSE!”. But really it’s Capcom that should lose this Head2Head. Porting a game is obviously become secondary. These companies need to step up and stop screwing the consumer. You don’t wanna mess with a Street Fighter fan who just got gimped. Xbox 360 - Win

Good comparison BTW. The Xbox 360 barely wins but It does win. On the other hand I do own the Anniversary arcade stick and PS3 being compatible with this controller or any USB controller is a huge huge plus for me.

I guess the PS3 needs an update to make hardware upscale, the apparent “superiority” of the 360 its the fake upscaling besides that the shading is clearly superior on the PS3, the “washed out textures” of the PS3 is the lack of upscale resolution, tsk… I guess many fanboys will write dead threat answers for this.

I am going to have to disagree with you on the washed out textures being due to the upscaling. All of our comparisons are done at 720p, so no upscaling is involved. Capcom actually did a great job matching colors and contrast on the PS3, it is only slightly different. This was very close in the graphics department.

  3. Todd Pappacoda diabetik jedi says:

I have to agree they were a little lazy when porting this game ,not that the ps3 version is bad but the 360 wins this round ,not putting either system down I own both they just need to port games better and not be lazy on any console.

I can’t say I’m surprised tht tha 360 won tha head2head. Not 2 sound lik a biased 360 fanboy but 4 sum reason most games on both consoles end up being better on tha 360, jus look at bioshock, tha orange box, etc. BTW any1 tht doesn’t hav this game needs 2 get it asap, its great 4 sf veterans n newcomers alike

The small graphical differences and mandatory install to make the load time bearable certainly detract from the PS3 version, but it still wins IMHO. The 360’s d-pad is simply too wieldy and unresponsive to handle SFIV; the ability to play with a fighting pad on the PS3 right from the outset makes this a clear choice in my mind. The graphical differences favor the 360, but smooth and fluid controls matter 10x more than slight texture pop-in. PS3 wins hands-down.

O M G!I can’t believe that all the ps3 fanboys just cant accept the fact that they get an inferior(even by a pixel)or,at best, the same version of a game!2years since lauch, and all excuses on the “3 times more powerfull then the competition”starting to fade…and they still dont get it…Getting a ps3 is not a next gen console, its a next gen player!!Sure,i admit that first party titles are usually top notch,(since the studios r expirienced, and took VERY long time to produce good results)but come on…5-10 titles tops,is nt a very good number..Also,on graphics,we ll see gears of war 3,and the long awaited Alan Wake, which was at e06 best graphics game(better than the so famous killzone2 trailer, which is nt exactly,on par with the actual game, but, damn close nevetheless),and then we can figure ou who actually wins..For now i play my cheaper, smoother framerated, and without blurry and washed out textures on most multyplatform games,on my 360..I hope someday ps3 can do the same

Just 2 make some things str8,I am not paid,I am not blind, and I am not foolish enough 2 support company that promised xbox live in Greece(and still have nt got, officially!!)or a product that makes you worry whether u play 4 an hour,or 10 hours str8 and hope not getting red lights flashing…I have my share of complaints for the M$ console as well!!But,i think Sony made(or tried and trying 2 make)a fool out of me and everyone, when they started blaberring about:1)”true next gen graphics(comparisons anyone?)”,”1080p all games”(yeah……right…i wish it had more than 30 upscaled games that output 1080p without hiches, while all 360 get the upscaled treatment seamlessly, and guess what…it is a big deal!)dual hdmi output(they apparrently took one out…cause, while the machine”was”capable,it cost 2 much, even more than 600$ maybe?)better online expirience(they r getting on it,hope they reach xbox live on ps4..)”sick”-axis controls without vibration(they got that fixed..so,older ps3 users..spend 30-40bucks more for another controller as well 2 keep up..)Super texture quality cause of the amount of data on the blue-ray(should i type Blu-Rry instead?)disk,”Hdmi 1.3 connection providing unparralel depth of color”(they forgot 2 tell washed and rinshed out as well…)and all that, with no AA,but the poor man Anti aliasing quin-sucks!!!way 2 Sony…Way 2 go!!The only reason 2 buy a ps3 r some of the exclusives, which i hope someday this year they will come out, hopefully good..cause resistance, motorstorm, prologue, lair, haze and Mgs4(yes,not that incredible graphics,on a game 5hours gameplay,30+hours cinematics..)failed to get a hold out of me..

They never said that all games will be 1080p, just that all PS3s are capable of displaying it. Because at the time the 360 was not. If you feel cheated by false promises that were never made, you are a fool.
Sadly, the 360 is also not the cheaper console. I would have went 360, if they had cheap non-european copies running on european consoles. But often they are regionlocked. That and the cost of a Live Gold membership are putting it in a higher price range. Okay, back when I made the decision the UK wasn’t as screwed as they are now, so today I guess I could get cheap UK copies. Leaves Live costs and the lack of 360 games I can’t have on PC or PS3, even if the PS3 versions are slightly worse at times. Maybe with the next Xbox…

Not to mention the fighter pad that we reviewed already. They have the same fighter pad for both systems, and personally I’d rather use it than either of the native controls. Taking these and the Hori sticks into account, I think controls start to become moot and graphics take more priority.

I agree Corey. I think we all have the right to know which one is worth our hard earned money. Fortunately, I own only an Xbox 360 so I’ll be getting the better version. With that said you guys better be wearing your RYU head bands!!

I disagree Jaime, just because you own the Xbox 360 doesn’t mean you have to buy only for that console. If the Ps3 won, you’d buy the Ps3 version. Not owning both consoles is a cop out.

  10. Jim Jim says:

While I agree that we do have to know which version is best, there is also other factors. It has been proven that ports to PS 3 are mostly inferior to X-Box 360. It doesn’t mean that X-Box is the superior system, it means it is accessible for the developers to bring out its full potential. PS 3’s potential has not yet been fully realized and honestly never will be unless there is a dedicated team. X-Box 360 is a great system for all to create games but do not blame sony for an inferior port if the developers do not want to put in the effort. It is fustrating but please do not unfairly roast a system due to laziness on someone else’s part. Just enjoy the damn game. This is nothing new.

    • Jaime Jaime says:

Well I disagree. Sony needs to be more involved in there products. It’s a direct reflection on there system when a game looks inferior no matter how small the differences are. I know if I made a game system and developers were making crap ports for it I would want to know why. If it’s laziness then that needs to be addressed. If the system full potential hasn’t been tap yet then why? Sony needs to step up to the plate and demand answers, because like I stated before their laziness or whatever, is a direct reflection on the hardware of the PS3. It makes the system look inferior because the products being developed for it look inferior.

      • Rude Sole Rudesole says:

Man you hit the bull’s-eye on that one Jaime. Since the release of PS3 Sony has marketed the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player not a gamming machine and consequently loosing important exclusives titles like Final Fantasy prove it. Just look what’s going on right now with Killzone 2. This game may be the greatest technical achievement to ever come to any console, and I have not yet seen a single commercial. Sony needs to really focus back on making great games like they did with PS2.

No matter how hard you try to discredit the ps3…its a well known fact among us real street fighter fans that the game will not play as good on the xbox 360 cuase the directional pad is terrible…theres is not a HUGE enough difference for me say “I’ll opt for bad controls on the 360 just cuase the visuals are 2 percent better. which is why when i ask every hardcore street fighter fan what system they’re getting it for they always say ps3

Personally,i did nt try to discredit the ps3(obviously,it does a good job by itself…)The controls is something that fortunately, have many solutions for everyone(others have small hands, othes big, others want with fans to prevent hands from sweating, others have pink color(!)others have turbo enabled, others have bigger sticks etc etc…hope u get the point)since many third party have their own reliable and sometimes, better and not expencive mostly..So,if i am a true hardcore(apart that i can master it with these fuzzy d-pad u say, which i agree also)i think i can spend a buck or 2 to buy something that will make my life with my favourite game a lot more joyfull…But guess what,i cant change the game itself and all its problems…and having second rate(even marginal)…is an issue,I d take the ps3 version only if i had ps3….ONLY!If i had both,i d still take the 360,and buy a worthy controler, since, the live expirience,is still better…Since i own a 360…maybe i should get a controller..hmmmm..

A hardcore SF4 player, who actually cares about controll, doesn’t take the controller into account. No matter which system you buy it for, there’s no way in hell you’re playing it with the stock controller! Yes the PS3 D-Pad is far supirior than the US 360 D-Pad in SF4, but it’s nothing compared to the Mad Catz fight pad or just about any arcade sticks (or a hand made stick which most hardcore players use).

Is that even a real comment. I mean come on you are good because you beat the CPU on hard with Zangief. How about you actually try and fight a human opponent. Anyway….what can anyone expect from twin brothers who hide behind bad internet service as their excuse for not getting the beat down!!!

i have both versions and i prefer the ps3 version. the graphics on ps3 match the arcade closer than the blurrier 360. the cut scenes are crystal clear thanks to the blu-ray, 360 has more self shadowing, but most of tit flickers and looks annoying. for ps3 is a perfect arcade port. for 350, its been consolized too much, and has effects that don’t need to be there, that actually hurt the look of it. finally, the ps3 does load a tad faster after the install. there’s a longer pause after selection on 360. sure its half a second, but its noticeable.

to each their own, i guess, but your post reeks of purchase justification even though you say you have both.

personally i’ve played both too, and on an hdtv the ps3’s lack of detail in some bgs, the odd drop in res to 640p (from 720) during ultras/wins/intros, and the lack of AA (for more edge jaggies) on the ps3 make the ps3 look less attractive than the 360, which has the constant 720p and constant 2xaa.

very interesting comparison, and a great game nonetheless.
