This week the Lens of Truth takes a sneak peak at the Aliens vs. Predator demo for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms. We have to admit, considering previous “less than stellar” titles released from Rebellion studios, we were expecting another cookie cutter demo that would guarantee disappointment, but boy were we wrong. The Aliens vs. Predator demo from the get-go exceeded all expectations, so keep reading on to find out which version had us fighting over who gets to play next while the other version left us grinding our teeth in agony waiting for the next match to begin.
The Aliens vs. Predator (AvP) series has shown its face on multiple platforms throughout the years including a PC version and an Atari Jaguar version since its inception in Dark Horse Comics. The Aliens vs. Predator demo accurately encapsulated both the dark environmental feeling from the Alien movies and some awesome weaponry and stealth technology from the Predator series. Unfortunately, the entire demo experience was online only, which allowed you to choose from either a Marine, Alien or Predator and duke it out over a classic free-for-all death match. This unique three-way online multiplayer experience was simultaneously exciting and annoying, because it made matching up screen shots for our rollovers almost impossible. Nevertheless, our analyzer managed to capture some interesting differences between the two versions you don’t want to miss.
Graphics: The Aliens vs. Predator demo looked amazing throughout on both versions, displaying next-gen lighting and textures flawlessly. Honestly though, the sound effects in this game were over the top. Seriously, every sound effect that was in the movies, from the Alien’s elephant-like scream to the marines’ motion tracking system, carried over to this game perfectly. Also, each corridor you turned down showed off Rebellion’s amazingly talented art team; the attention to detail the artists managed to replicate from the movies is top notch. Texture quality between both versions looked on par with one other, but there were some noticeable differences between the two versions. For one, the normal maps and specular maps on the Xbox 360 version looked more polished in some areas. For example the normal maps on the walls in the Aliens’ lair looked more defined. Another area affected was the lighting system. The Xbox 360 version handled blooms and shadows more efficiently.
Performance: This category was more of a wash. The Xbox 360 out performed the Playstation 3 throughout. While both versions had screen tearing, the Playstation 3 did it more often. Fortunately, this was the demo, so let’s hope Rebellion studios fixed some issues before gold. Below is the complete list of stats.
| PlayStation 3 Frame Analysis | Xbox 360 Frame Analysis |
| Clip 1: Length of clip: 4847 frames Average FPS of clip: 29.85 Percent of torn frames: 27.66 |

| Global percent of torn frames: 23.50 Global average FPS: 29.74 |
Global percent of torn frames: 2.51 Global average FPS: 29.59 |
Matchmaking: This was an interesting category. During our experience with the demo there was a total of about ten or twelve games played throughout the night. The exact number is a little fuzzy, but what’s crystal clear is only three of those games played were on the Playstation 3. Literally, we waited until the last second of time allocated for this Head2Head to expire and amazingly our third attempt finally went through. We later found out that the PC and Playstation 3 both had a match making bug. The issue was fixed on the PC, but as of Saturday afternoon (2/6), the Playstation 3 still had this bug. With this all mentioned, as soon as we were matched in a game, loading as well as respawning were equal.

Roll over to see the differences. Notice the Xbox 360 version looks sharper.

Roll over to see the differences.
Conclusion: Just to reiterate, this is only the demo, but given first impressions, we had fun with this game. The super speed of the Alien, the cloaking features of the Predator, and the full arsenal of the marines just does not get old. When it comes down to a win, the Xbox takes it home for better graphics and performance. The Lens of Truth looks forward the full retail version of Aliens Versus Predator for a more complete analysis and for personal collections.

please do BIOSHOCK 2. After all it is released and this is not.

The PS3 version looks so blurry compared to the 360 version in that first rollover. I’m glad that you posted this though, because I’d forgotten that the demo was out. I’m gonna go and check it out…………

Wow, The PS3 only wins by less than frame.
You never took into account that the PS3 version suffers from much more screen tearing and washed out textures when compared to its 360 counter part.

actually, videogameszone is a much credible site than lensoftruth. videogameszone had done many comparisons than lensoftruth in the past, and all of their comparisons are accurately presented. I own both ps3 and 360, and i can tell u that the PS3 version doesn’t look as blurry as lensoftruth states. check the site, and u will know what I mean.

I actually tried to see your point but, your logic is clearly flawed. Frames per second is not the only factor that goes into performance (see the matchmaking issues above) and a .15 difference is really no difference at all. By the way, if you think that “videogameszone” is better than why are you still watching comparisons on LOT?

videogamezone.de is full of sh*t. They almost use it as propaganda against 360 versions these days. They just throw up screenshots with no explanation or stats. If i remember recently they did the same thing with Bioshock 2, claiming that the 360 version was far blurrier than the ps3, and we all know how that turned out. Oh, they also did the same thing with Dante’s Inferno and they ended up being identical! Lensoftruth is the most reliable site i’ve ever seen for comparisons, and ive even tried playing multiple versions myself and agree with their findings. And just by looking at your avatar pic and grammar it’s easy to see you’re just another fanboy. “i advice u to check ur recording tools”? Did oo undastand wot i sed?

Eurogamer covered Dante’s Inferno in their most recent face-off. Their conclusion was basically this: -
“As far as we can tell, the two versions of the game are like for like. Even the most pedantic of nit-pickers will be unable to take issue.”

Hey there,
First of all thanks for the head2head once again. Bit confused about the performance part thought. Framerate seems better on ps3 but screentear unfortunately also more present.
Also have to admit that the screenshot comparisons are a bit weird… only a handful really compare the same spot in the map… so very difficult to compare them.
Nevertheless keep up the good work!

Only Lens of Truth is stupid enough to confuse depth of field and/or distortion shader effects with “look, it’s teh blurrier!!!11″
Did they even offer the slightest semblance of an explanation as to WHY that one single screen exhibits an excessive amount of blurring in that PS3 shot? Just ONE single particular screen, and none of the others? Or did they just show you the poor representation of the PS3 version and say, “Hmm, look it’s blurrier. I wonder why.”
What a joke of a site.

For instance, they’re so biased, they didn’t even bother to mention how the PS3-version screenshot showed extra distortion and lens effects that are absent in the 360 screenshot.
If people come into a comparison expecting one version to fare worse, then it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy, and all possibility of an objective article has gone out the window.

The PS3 uses 2x Quincunx anti aliasing technique, which makes for a somewhat ‘blurry’ image – the Xbox generally uses 2x or 4x multisampling anti-aliasing – which is not as harsh.

Instead of bashing why not check the game out for yourself on your PS3 and Xbox 360. Oh wait you only have a PS3, that sucks.
FYI well I did and guess what the PS3 version looks more washed out and blurrier. Deal with it the NUMB NUTS.

Oh and the first image effect you referenced is in both version. If you played the game on the Xbox 360 you would have known that. That effect happens when the Alien is sprinting full force. You fail again!

Hey guys! Glad you guys posted this up actually. I was stuck between the PS3 or PC version. Though I knew the PC version would have the edge, I was hoping to get the PS3 version so i could multiplayer with some friends. But now looking at that massive screen tear I’m going to change my mind.
Thanks for the early Head2Head.

1st picture shows a lot more detail on the left wall on PS3 than the 360. The slight blur on the background is because the PS3 alien is sprinting while the 360 is not. Are lense of truth being biased towards the 360 again. I think so.
Second pic shows a lot more detail on the floor and walls on PS3. Look at the guys arm and gloves. You can see veins in his arms on PS3 while the 360s are more blurred.
I think that LOT didnt use the gamma correction on PS3 either.
ITS A FIX AGAIN.

LMAO at the delusional PS3 fanboys rolling up here again. Notice how they always claim to own both. If they did own both, why are they so upset about the PS3 version losing (again)? Google some of these guy’s names and you can see their fanboyism on either forums, especially monkeyspoon. What saddos. Guess they have nothing better to do than defend just one of the two consoles they claim to own as if their lives depended on it. Hahaha.

You lie to people on other forums to get them to buy PS3 versions of games even when they are vastly inferior, such as Ghostbusters. You are a lying idiot. Nothing you say has any credibility and on every forum you post on, people think you are a sad troll and a complete and utter tool. You have been doing this for over 3 years you pathetic little virgin. LOL. You really, REALLY need to get a life cos you are one of the most pitiful individuals I’ve ever seen on a games forum. Haha!

Haha. It’s hardly stalking. It’s always amusing to Google an obvious fanboy’s name, because you can see the raft of evidence that proves they are a complete and utter bell end, as is the case with monkeyspoon. lol. He’s so desperate to make the PS3 sound good that he will lie to people over and over again. That’s just pathetic.

See for me uncharted 2 was a much better game than KZ2, after beating it, I just never touched it again.
This game is amazing, after playing the demo I couldn’t believe how well they made it, way to go rebellion.
Which ever console your getting it for, you will be happy.
This is not a PS2 game in HD, you know what is? God of war collection (which i recommend to all who haven’t played GOW)
Don’t hate something without trying it. The demo is online only, you wont get a good feel for it.
Grow pplz!
Branch out, learn that there are others games out there other than KZ2 call of duty mass effect and Halo.
Seriously!

I’m the same with Uncharted 2, played it once, then some multiplayer, and haven’t touched it since. I really want to go back and play it on hard and crushing but, I’ve been too involved in MW 2 and Fallout 3 to do so. Also, I still have to go back and finish inFamous on hard and KZ 2 on elite lol.

You guys boggle my mind!!
“The demo looked amazing on both systems”…WHAT!?
Are you serious??
I’ve played both and the graphics are terrible, absolutely terrible! Blurry visuals, horrible textures, rubbish animations… not to mention the PS3 version looks considerably worse then the 360.
Considering the quality of consoles we have today, you would expect a whole lot more in terms of overall quality, a LOT more!
As it stands, it was fun for about 15 minutes but it quickly feels like a sub-standard floaty arcade hack n slash that quickly gets very boring after that.
I’m let down because of the huge potential this game could have had in today’s gen.
IMO they need to slow the pacing down big time, they need to really set a dank, dark oppressive ATMOSPHERE to induce a real fear from the player and give the hunters a chance to really hunt their prey in a gripping and satisfying way. As it stands the movements are choppy and clunky and floaty… I could slag this game off day but I’ll stop. So much potential…and we get a PS2 quality rubbish experience.
I came here expecting you to slate the game for being overall below average in EVERY WAY. Only to see you showering praise for ‘great graphics’…What!?!…
You must’ve been on something GOOD when you played this.

I saw it on X-play and was not impressed. Seems like a lackluster game that has been pushed out the door with very little hype or promotion.
