We go Head2Head with WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.Which version do you think gets the Smackdown in this Head2Head? Watch the video to find out.

Thanks to the fine folks at Play N Trade (Oviedo and Lake Mary), Lens of Truth was able to get our hands on WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. WWE SmackDown vs. Raw is a professional wrestling game developed by Yuke’s, and published by THQ. WWE SmackDown vs. Raw is the eleventh game in the WWE SmackDown franchise, and is the sequel to WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009. For the first time in the WWE SmackDown series this version implements the Havok game engine that should greatly improve with the game collision detection between wrestlers and ropes in the ring.  So which version of WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 should you lay the SmackDown on? Read on to find out.

Graphics: Our first impressions on the graphics for WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 were that they were a little disappointing. Let’s get this out in the open: neither version is rendering anywhere close to 720p. And judging from our screenshots, it appears that the PlayStation 3 version is rendering at an even lower resolution than the Xbox 360.  Other than the rendering resolutions, there were some other noticeable graphics differences between the two versions that we need to point out. The first thing that really stood out was the differences between the character models in the audience. While the characters closer to the ring were clearly polygonal, the background characters were made using either a billboard or render to texture procedure. The Xbox 360 version had the more detailed and a smoother approach; each person could easily be made distinguishable from one another. On the other hand, the PlayStation 3 version of the audience looked very jagged and almost unrecognizable in some spots. We are talking NBA Jam quality background characters. The next area of interest was noticeable after being tossed outside the ring. The camera automatically pans overhead of the players to make things easier to see by giving a bird’s eye view of the ring and the arena floor. Here, the Xbox 360 version seems to have an occlusion map, and higher detailed specular and reflection maps throughout the entire floor. And lastly, shadows are rather inconsistent in WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 for both versions of the game. Sometimes we would catch the characters self shadowing on the PlayStation 3 version and not on the Xbox 360 and vice versa.

Performance: Both versions performed equal to one another and we were a little surprised to see how well the game ran. Screen tearing was completely absent on both versions, all while maintaining a solid frame rate throughout. Furthermore, both versions also handled the max number of wrestlers on screen at once (6) without a hitch, all while following through on their promise for more precious collision detection between the wrestler and the environments.

PlayStation 3 Avg. FPS: 47.79 / Xbox 360 Avg. FPS: 47.78
PlayStation 3 Avg. Frame Tear: 0.0% / Xbox 360 Avg. Frame Tear: 0.0%

Loading: Load times were impressive on both versions, drop kicking in around 8 seconds on the PlayStation 3 and 9 seconds on the Xbox 360. At first, we thought that the real loads times were masked behind the character signature electrifying entrances, but after further investigation their entrances could be completely skipped if you so decide and the quick load times remain. Finally the PlayStation 3 did require a mandatory install of 3.2 gb and took around 7 minutes and 34 seconds to install, but if a mandatory install is required to ensure equal load times across platforms, then we’re all on board.

Conclusion: WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 is a game that should have been visually polished a bit more on both consoles before shipping. Graphically, it is not that impressive, but if you are a WWE fan there will be plenty to like outside of the presentation. However, for this Head2Head it all comes down to visuals since all other categories where on equal ground.  And for that the Xbox 360 version is the winner due to having slightly better visuals.

PS3 - Win Xbox 360 had a more detailed environment and audience. While the graphical differences never affected gameplay, the Xbox 360 did have a more overall polish to it. But to reiterate, neither version is visually impressive.

Yet another game not to buy. If wrestling is fake, then clearly making this game look realistic is pure irony. But if we’re trying to make games look real, I’ve never met a crowd of blocky people. Not that there’s anything wrong with them, in fact I support the blocky lifestyle, I just prefer not to see them in my game..if I buy those games. Xbox 360 - Win

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 was pretty fun, especially the bitch smacking fight Corey and I had, but really THQ? What happened to the Playstation 3 audience because I know the Playstaion 3 could easily do it. The NBA Jam audience just killed my experiences… so Xbox 360 version for me. Xbox 360 - Win
Shawn “…It was fun but what happen to the audiences on the PS3?
I have never been a big fan of the WWE series, so this isn’t a game that I would go out and purchase. But I was curious to see how this game stacked up compared to WWE Legends of WrestleMania. I am not sure how THQ managed to do it, but both versions of WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 are a step down in graphic quality from Legends. Pretty shoddy considering how far we are in this generation.

The PS3 version is a joke in comparison.

It’s rare that I’m interested in owning a game that looks better on one system or the other, but this is one of the games I wanted to get that the 360 version walks all over the PS3 version no contest.

Doesn’t matter much as you can’t tell the difference while playing the game as they’re the exact same, but I’d have liked to have a better look to the game if I was to pick it up for the PS3.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen THQ create a poor port of the Playstation 3. I think the 360 had an advantage with Legends game.

Honestly, after a series of their games, it seems like they really don’t care.

I think that because the engine was tooled to run at 60fps they had to comprise some of the graphical effects on the ps3 version to keep that frame rate.

But its kind of disgusting that so many trolls vote for the ps3 version despite the obvious differences between them.

Whether the game was tailored to run at 60fps or not (it seems to run at around 50fps for both of them though according to the performance data), I’m sure if the PS3 was developed properly they would still have been able to run it at that frame rate.

But I assume you mean the engine was tailored to run on PC or 360 architecture, not the PS3s which is correct.

And yeah, it is sad that some people think the PS3 is better (based on the votes).

Just to be clear, this game runs at around 60fps during the actual gameplay and 30 fps during the in-game cinematics. Kind of odd that they chose to switch up the fps like that.

Yet again PS3 owners get the short end of the stick yet forked out more $$$ for their system…

    • NoBiggie NoBiggie says:

who are you blaming? b/c it really isnt Yukes fault, its more expensive and more difficult to develop for and the game even sells less copies on the platform.

blame sony for making a non-straight forward console for third party developers. Then keeping most of the developer secrets to just their own first party.

You’re right. The only thing the ps3 has going for it the first party titles (which I think are slightly overrated bar a few) and free online play and possibly Blu-Ray for movies.

I never thought I’d see the day of Nintendo-esque graphics on any next-gen system, but the PS3 just proved me wrong with the crowd visual. This system is only good for blu-rays and exclusives, period. I was almost embarrassed just for owning one when I saw the crowd!

it runs at 60fps and in HD resolution. something no nintendo console could ever achieve.

OK, so the PS3 version is just a polished turd. The crowd looks like garbage, but hey it runs at 60 fps! I’m glad you know that no Nintendo console will ever be able to run at 60 fps too, you’re a knowledgeable guy!

I’m tired of people calling developers lazy. Game developers have deadlines to meet and are paid x amount of money for working on games with set tools. They don’t make bank like most people think. It’s the damn higher ups who make the damn money! When you guys get a job in the field developing these games, then u can tell me developers are lazy by you guys getting games to look better on a console with inferior hardware.

A lot of the LoT guys have and do work in the industry. And Uncharted 2 proves the PS3 hardware is not inferior. It could have looked better.

        +1 for you.

Uncharted 2 just proves that if handled correctly, the Playstation is capable of technicalities that have yet to be seen by other consoles this generation.

And TonyP you should read their FAQ. Majority of the team has experience or has worked on video game developments before. I’m sure they know how time managment is handled amongst developers.

Btw LoT, I still think it’s a good idea to make articles that explain what AA, Shaders, SSAO, normal maps do. Hell I’m even willing to help with writing them if you want.

PS3 fanboys makes me LOL. Seriously, 3rd party developers shouldn’t have to keep wasting their time, money, & resources just to make PS3 versions of games on par with the 360 versions (or even better than the 360 versions, for that matter). Especially when the PS3 is STILL being stuck in 3rd place, development costs keep rising, & that PS3 versions of games really don’t sell very well compared to 360 versions. They don’t have the kind of money to waste just trying to make PS3 versions look on par with 360. That’s why you see most games being multiplatform.

Even when PS3 reaches it’s full potential, & by the time that happens, both Nintendo & Microsoft would be out with their next gen consoles that would make those PS3 graphics look very dated. Guaranteed.

Sony made their console hard for developers to develop on for PS2 as hard enough as it is, but then they intentionally made it worse for PS3. Maybe they should learn their lesson not to make their console so damn hard to develop games on. That’s why so many 3rd party developers hated developing games on that machine. Plus a more better GPU & more RAM would be a big help.

        • Garland Garland says:

And before anyone says that “the PS3 is catching up & will overtake 360,” & “There are really negligible differences,”, etc., know that the difference isn’t negligible; it has been quantified quite a lot since the launch of the systems and it still happens today, just not as big a difference now as it used to be.

Also, if you think that PS3 is succeeding now, but just wait until Microsoft lowers the price of the Arcade model to $150. Then you’re going to be going “But, but, but…Blu-Ray! Free online! Built-in Wi-Fi!,” etc. The fact is, 360 is more popular, has more exclusives, & is a better gaming machine than the PS3 & it has been proven time & time again. Sony were the ones who had to wind up dropping prices & releasing more SKU’s just for them to play catch up in the sales department against 360 & they’re still doing it now, & yet, they haven’t come even close to tie in with the 360 let alone the Wii (especially in Japan). Plus both Nintendo & Microsoft are raking in the money off of each Wii & 360 being sold, while Sony has lost billions (they now lost about what, $5 Billion in the gaming division so far?).

And the Arcade model is actually more popular than most people would think. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have discontinued the Pro model. Not everyone cares about online, etc., or else all 34+ million owners would be on X-Box Live right now, etc. They just want to play games.

You’re definitely not a 360 fanboy are you.

Previously, early in both systems lives it was worth getting a 360 over a PS3. Now it’s not so much. The only games I’ve owned for the 360 that haven’t been ported to the PS3 were Gears of War, Test Drive Unlimited, Dead Rising, Dead or Alive Ultimate, and Dead or Alive 4.

Even how good Dead Rising, the Dead or Alive series, and the Test Drive Unlimited(360 version > PS2/PSP versions) is the PS3 exclusives being better are one of the reason why I enjoy the system more. The fact that online is free and just as good as Live is the second reason. Cross game chat and listening to any of the music on your system while you play another game is not worth $50 a year. So you’re bashing the PS3 for having free online(and wireless, but who cares about wireless btw. wired ftw,) yet if I spent $50 a year from when I first got my 360(which I no longer have,) to now, I’d have paid far more than I did for the PS3, even at $599.

Considering this game IS still using an engine that’s over a decade old, I can’t say I’m all that surprised.

They probably use the PS3 version to port down to the PS2 version, which is a train wreck of glitchalicious freezing.

After all this time THQ/Yukes have no excuses. Now that THQ has the license until 2014 maybe, just maybe they’ll finally build the game from the ground up on current gen consoles…. Yeah, right.

PS3 version supports 6 players offline, which makes it better in my book. Having 5 friends over and some beers makes this game really enjoyable.

Yeah, the 360 version looks better, but a couple of my friends would have to sit out, so that’s why the PS3 one gets my vote.
