We go Head2Head with Tekken 6 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.Which version will be the King of this Iron Fist in this Head2Head? Watch the video to find out.

Thanks to the fine folks at Play N Trade (Lake Mary), the Lens of Truth was able to get our fists on the new Tekken 6 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. As many of you know, the renowned Tekken series has always been a PlayStation exclusive, so it  has never been brought home on any other gaming console. Stick around because there can only be one Iron Fist champion in this arena!

Graphics: Graphically, the Tekken series has usually been a cutting edge franchise, raising the bar with every iteration. We still remember playing Tekken on the PS1 and thinking how awesome Namco did with the port from the arcade. Here at the Lens of Truth, we have always been big fans of the Tekken series and our anticipation to play this game was quiet high. Visually, both games look nearly identical. We really strained our eyes looking for differences, but we couldn’t see anything major. We even tinkered around with the motion blur feature in the game’s options to see if one looked better, but once again, nothing to write home about. With that said, Namco did a superb job keeping both games balanced in the graphics department. Even though they look nearly identical, it really is nothing to brag about. You’ll understand why later.

h2h_tekken_6_02

Performance: Not much to report here. Both games run at a solid 60 fps with absolutely no screen tearing; the truth of the matter is that this was expected. However, this is the first game we’ve run through our analysis which scored near perfect so it earns a little reward on our site for that.

PlayStation 3 Avg. FPS: 59.98 / Xbox 360 Avg. FPS: 60.0
PlayStation 3 Avg. Frame Tear: 0.0% / Xbox 360 Avg. Frame Tear: 0.0%

Loading: Here’s where things get interesting and where a winner was decided.  Surprisingly, the Xbox 360 demolished the Playstation 3 in loading times. Even when we installed Tekken 6 on the Playstation 3 it still loaded slightly more slowly than the Xbox 360 running off the disc. Since the install was not mandatory, we felt that an install for the PlayStation 3 would also require an install on the Xbox 360 (we like to keep the playing field as even as possible). The install for the Xbox 360 did absolutely nothing for loading times matching as if it was running from the disc. However, the install on the Playstation 3 did help load times and it would be beneficial to install this game on the PlayStation 3, but for Head2Head’s sake, the install still couldn’t compete with the Xbox 360’s disc speed. Why Namco didn’t just require a mandatory install is beyond us. Listed below are the load times for both systems, with and without installs.

PlayStation 3 Load Times (Not installed):
Time #1 (loading trophies, saved data etc…) 18 – 18.4 seconds
Time #2 (loading characters and preparing to fight) 16 – 18.8 seconds

Xbox 360 Load Times (Not installed):
Time #1 (loading saved data etc…) 0 – 0.3 seconds
Time #2 (loading characters and preparing to fight) 10 – 10.5 seconds

PlayStation 3 Load Times (Installed 4.6 gb):
Time #1 (loading trophies, saved data etc…) 1 – 2 seconds
Time #2 (loading characters and preparing to fight) 11 – 12.2 seconds

Xbox 360 Load TImes (Installed 6.7 gb):
Time #1 (loading saved data etc…) 0 – 0.3 seconds
Time #2 (loading characters and preparing to fight) 10 – 10.5 seconds

Roll over to see the differences. Here we compare the different HDMI settings between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Conclusion: In conclusion, the deciding factor was the load times so the win goes to the Xbox 360. Although performing the optional installation on the PlayStation 3 helped level the playing field, we here at the Lens of Truth stick with our “out-of-the-box” policy. Namco really shouldn’t have given PlayStation 3 owners the option to install; it should be mandatory. What concerned us the most about the PlayStation 3 load times was the online play. There will be a lot of waiting for challengers if you are paired with someone that hasn’t installed. In every other area ,both games played and looked identical and if it weren’t for the load times this would have been a tie. Unfortunately, this time around we were a little disappointed with the quality of this game, especially the graphics, and we expected a little more from Namco on this one.

G R A P H I C S
PS3 - Win Tie. The graphics on both versions look almost identical to one another resulting in a deadlock. Texture quality, lighting, motion blur and particles were ported over between consoles flawlessly. Xbox 360 - Win
P E R F O R M A N C E
PS3 - Win Tie. Again both versions performed identically maintaining a constant frame rate and absolutely no screen tearing to report, also the PlayStation 3 upscales to 1080i/p resolution. Xbox 360 - Win
L O A D I N G
PS3 - Win Xbox 360 won this category by sporting drastically faster load times than the PlayStation 3 version. This time around the PlayStation 3 version didn’t require a mandatory install, but Namco should have made it that way. Only after installing on the PlayStation 3 did the load times match the Xbox 360 version.
Xbox 360 - Win
O U T C O M E
PS3 - Win Out-of-the-box, the Xbox 360 version is our flavor of choice. If you do decide to install it on the Playstation 3, the load times will be decreased but be warned the online matches may take a hit depending on who you are paired with. Xbox 360 - Win

I am not sure what happened to Tekken 6. I am really disappointed on how the visuals look in this game. Some assets feel like they could have been ripped directly from the PSN’s Tekken 5. The ground textures are blurry, everything is highly aliased and really the only thing it has going for it visually is the motion blur. But, I am a Tekken fan for the roster and play mechanics. Just next time Namco, polish the game a bit more before shipping.
Xbox 360 - Win
Corey “…assets feel like the could have been ripped from Tekken 5
The Tekken series has always been one of my favorite fighting franchises, due to their outdoing themselves with each new addition. Unfortunately, Tekken 6 falls a little short, especially in the graphics department. I wish Namco focused on just one platform and delivered something a little more visually appeasing, but all in all, Tekken 6 is still a rock solid fighter. The Xbox 360 version is the choice for me, having half the loading time.

Xbox 360 - Win
Shawn “…Namco what happened?
I’m not into fighting games like this. I thought I was looking at DOA or Soul Calibur at first. The panda is weird though, but we all know how panda’s like to fight! So when everyone was unimpressed with this game, I went home. The load times is what really lets the Xbox 360 win, just like it did for Street Fighter IV.

Seriously, these xbots are so retarded, even Namco themselves said the PS3 version is better. Are you just too retarded to be retarded?

I know that doesn’t make sense, it’s because you are retarded that’s why.

Not many people uses fighting stick.
PS2/3’s D-Pad isn’t just good for 2d fighting game. Because in 3d, you’ll need to use the D-Pad in order to off complex moves. Sounds to me like you are a loser in fighting games if you can’t perform more than 3 different moves.

Anyway, how is the online for this game?

    • William Andrews WillyPS3 says:

From what I’ve read this is exactly what nameco said as well. The game play was generally better (for controllers and visually)to play on. Despite the loading times you think people were in no rush to play games, cause they expect loading times on all games, due to the fact that loading signifies some kind of processing is happening in order for a kick ass show to begin. Most of the people derive from the pc into consoles, we should be use with loading times, and the fact that you said installing brings it close to xbox should not be a reason to dock it, since installing would be the smart thing to do.

  2. Archimago Archimago says:

Just played XBOX 360 version tonight. Don’t really care which version better but I was VERY disappointed with the aliased graphics… Geez, looks like they didn’t even turn on the essentially “free” antialiasing on the 360! Ridiculous…

  3. Luís Luís says:

I was in shock when I saw the lens of truth result because I knew that even Namco themselves said the PS3 version is better and the Arcade Machine of Nanco 6 is a PS3 hardware based machine.
In every tech fóruns experts user said that PS3 visuals are better and 360 version has a lot of Aliasing but for lens of thuth it was a draw!??
I don´t like this game, I think this game graphics are very poor in both versions and respect lens of truth opinion but I don’t agree with this result.

  4. zord zord says:

oh come on guys… xbox win this match because of the loading times…

gonna buy this game for PS3 btw…

  5. zord zord says:

what i mean is that… 360 REALLY win this match(according to their criteria) loading for PS3 is longer than 360…

  6. xbot xbot says:

Can’t wait for Final fantasy XIII :D

  7. coffeerox coffeerox says:

Lens of Truth was very wrong here. The PS3 version is clearly superior, they didn’t take into account the other things that the PS3 excelled in. The graphics are definitely NOT the same. For a better comparison, go to Digital Foundry where they go indepth with what’s different between the two. Lens of Truth also blown the whole loading thing out of proportion. .4 seconds is not a terrible bit of difference, this should have been a tie. They knew it, we all knew it, but apparently LoT doesn’t.

  8. coffeerox coffeerox says:

okay to clarify, having the technical know-how to analyze both of them, the PS3 version is superior but what it looks like LoT did here, was a basic comparison and if I would have done it, I would have said it’s a tie.

    • junk3d junk3d says:

So the PS3 version is technically better because you get smoother visuals by disabling a feature, motion blur, that is on by default? Um, I think not. Out of the box this game is a visual tie. Time to move on.

And to save people the trouble, here is what DF had to say:

“Xbox 360 gets an enormous resolution boost to 1365×768, while the PS3 gets 2x multi-sampling anti-aliasing. In terms of overall image quality across the two modes and two consoles, the PS3 gets the nod in “blur off” mode thanks to decent enough upscaling based on an anti-aliased image, while in default mode with the motion blur active, the 360’s enhanced texture filtering gives clear image quality advantages.”

So yes, the PS3 wins if you turn off one of the key features of this marginal looking fighting game.

As for loading, it is night and day without the install and matches the 360’s speed with it. Namco shot themselves in the foot by making the install optional, it will be frustrating playing the majority of people online that have no clue that they should have installed it.

      • Ashdude Ashdude says:

Out of the box??? The PS3’s anti-alaising feature IS included “out of the box.” It is not a downloadable add-on. And this site is supposed to note marginal features. PS3 wins the Graphical category. Time to move on.

  9. miguel madigan stray says:

Hrmm… are Lens of Truth’s load time numbers on 360 with or without a hard drive? Seems like if PS3 games are scored lower for mandatory installs, performance on an Arcade 360 should be taken into consideration too, if it’s not.

I picked up Tekken for PS3, regardless… I’ve just been wondering for a while since my 360 had no HDD and it was a miserable experience on some games.

  10. Legileg Legileg says:

Tie in graphic? Are u kidding? Another LoT fanboy fail:

Just use your eyes and try to say that PS3 version is not better…

    • junk3d junk3d says:

sigh…it is sad that this has to be said again and again and again. Listen and comprehend. This game is visually a tie “out-of-the-box.” Which can be seen in every freaking picture on this article.

Now, when you disable the motion blur, which by the way is the only thing making this game look remotely current gen, that’s when the PS3 gets a visual boost. So yes, the PS3 version does look better with the motion blur off in the pictures that you posted. Nothing to be proud of really.

The amount of PS3 fanboys trolling this site lately has been alarming. But what is even more frightening is that they actually believe what they say.

  11. ps360menks ps360menks says:

    dear sirs,

I’ve been an avid follower of your head2head articles since you launched the site, and was very much anticipating your head2head comparison of tekken 6 as I am and avid fan of this game

I was curious though in your comments in the last paragraph about

\Unfortunately, this time around we were a little disappointed with the quality of this game, especially the graphics, and we expected a little more from Namco on this one.\

I understand that you meant about graphics, but Im just curious sir…what are the other aspects of the game that you were disappointed about? That you referred to it as \quality\?

thanks very much for reading my post hope to hear from you dear sir/s

    thanks^_^

  12. Yashamaru Yashamaru says:

I think that the verdict is totally biased. The PS3 version is better, look at those screen:

The PS3 version have more shadow at better resolution and more detail in the object.

    • sandwiches sandwiches says:

      LOL

This is the last screenshot you should’ve shown! The water for the PS3 looks completely horrible!

      • Yashamaru Yashamaru says:

Buy a new pair of glasses dude you need it ;) The water is the same but in the PS3 version is more sharper. If you say no is only because you are an xbot ;)

    • treopod treopod says:

nope you are wrong, the only thing different in those screens you showed are the contrast, which can easily be changed on the TV.

Also by judging from those screens, the ps3 version has more jaggies in spots.

I think it is you who needs glasses.

the ps3 version doesnt have any better graphics at all and the 360 version wins with load times.

      Good head to head, LOT

      • Yashamaru Yashamaru says:

Look closely at the self shadow of the object of the player. If you don’t see the extra shadow is only because you are an xbot ;) If the AO on other game is an extra and can detect the win the self shadow need the same treatment ;)

        • treopod treopod says:

Nah, the only reason you see it is because you are a sony-fanboy. ;)

They have the same shadows, only they are darker in the ps3 screens cause they have a higher contrast setting, you can easily change that. ;)

Also why are you ignoring that in the screens you posted, there are more jaggies on the ps3 screens?

  13. RAph RAph says:

vos screens le confirment, visuellement superior sur ps3
    ——————————————————–
your screens confirms it, visually superior on ps3

  14. augustoaag augustoaag says:

¿Why did you compared the “out of the box” load times in other games and in tekken you have the installed too?
¿Is it to help the ps3?

    • Corey Corey says:

We compare all games with “out of the box” settings. However, Tekken 6 is one of the few PS3 games that gives the user the option to install. So the game is scored “out of box” without the install on both systems (to stay consistent with previous Head2Heads). Then to give readers extra information we did the optional install on both systems.

And yes, the install on the PS3 helps the load times greatly. We demonstrate load times with and without install in the video above.

  15. TekkEn FaN TekkEn FaN says:

Well I have to say.. since I have a 360 I got the game for it.

Who cares which console is better?????(except retarded fan boys) For me both look the same almost, with PS3 being marginally ahead on the shot with lars with motion blur off. Otherwise it looked the same to me.

All I care about is that the EWGF and other moves work at the same speed on both……I was a little apprehensive coz I had Tekken 5 on ps2 and was dreading playing on the 360. But you know after playing for a few hours I nailed Heihachi’s EWGF at the same time as on the ps2.

SO FRANKLY – BEING A TEKKEN FAN IT DOESNT MATTER.

Though I do think players on the ps network would be better than on the xbox live……. Coz I remember I bought the 360 ONLY AFTER I was sure Tekken was not exclusive….. After all the 360 does have more games……

  16. Some guy Some guy says:

well this is not a site where you go look for game comparison, but those pictures do look legit, so…

    http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2009/10/06/tekken-6-ps3-vs-xbox-360-ps3-victorious/

It clearly shows PS3 has better graphic because of less jaggies.

  17. Garland Garland says:

Digital Foundry JUST had posted the comparison about this, & gave BOTH versions a tie:

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/xbox-360-vs-ps3-face-off-round-22-face-off?page=2

    Taken from B3D Forums here:

    http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=46241

    PS3 version: 1024×576 (2xMSAA w/o motion blur, no AA w/motion blur).
    360 version: 1024×576 w/motion blur, 1365×768 w/o motion blur (no AA).

In other words, they’re BOTH equal to each other. No version is exactly superior to one another.

    • Rude Sole Rudesole says:

Yea but DF never includes loading times or install size. Because the Xbox 360 is better no matter how you take it.

      • Garland Garland says:

PS3 owners get the ability to install the crucial game data to hard disk to speed up loading times. Around 3GB of space is required, and while the install is optional, it’s highly recommended because the loading times on both Xbox 360 and PS3 versions are something of a drag.

Wrong. They did mention loading times on there. Read it again.

  18. junk3d junk3d says:

Another site confirming the sluggish load times on the PS3 version (not installed). Seems they had some times upwards of 33 seconds versus 11 seconds on the Xbox 360!!!

Kotaku: Let’s Compare Tekken 6 Load Times

  19. kupomogli kupomogli says:

Doesn’t matter which version anyone gets as the online is laggy in both versions. The PS3 is sharper with less jaggies. However you need to do a manual install for the to get about the same loading time.

Turning off motion blur the PS3 version further surpasses the 360 version. If you have an HDTV that doesn’t require motion blur on or if you have an SDTV which won’t required motion blur on, then why leave it on?

With motion blur off the PS3 version looks better. With motion blur on the PS3 version looks better still. With no install, which I always do an install when given the option, the 360 version is much better.

Install the game, the PS3 wins. Don’t install the game the 360 wins.

  20. Pat Pat says:

Lens of Truth is getting a little biased.

The Lens of Truth screens confirms the visual superiority of this game on PS3.

  21. vince vince says:

i just want to say that this review should be a tie. if u maximize performance, the motion blur off gives ps3 an edge. then the load times gives xbox an edge. that cancels out..

  22. Jericho Jericho says:

    Best graphics: PS3
    Best load times: X360

But… this looks same like Tekken 5 in HD, it’s dissapointing. Tekken’s fans (like me) doesn’t care about it yes, but this neither is the best selling fighting game this gen (a.k.a. Street Fighter IV).

    Sorry my english…

  23. Da Da says:

PS3 lost you stupid piece of shit. Time for you to move on and let the adults do the talking.

  24. Danny Tan Burn_boy says:

    @ Da

Xbox won because of load times. Graphics wise PS3 > Xbox 360, Performance PS3 = Xbox 360,
