Watch the video to find out which version of Operation Flashpoint – Dragon Rising wins this Head2Head.

Thanks to Play N Trade (Oviedo, FL) the Lens of Truth had the chance to check out the latest in warfighter simulators, Operation Flashpoint – Dragon Rising (OF-DR), which was developed and published by Codemasters.  The story takes place on the island of Skira where you, as the leader of a squad of US Marines, have been sent to single-handily stop an all-out conflict between Russia and China over oil reserves. So sit back and watch the video for our comparison results.

Graphics: We were a bit confused by this Head2Head. OF-DR was supposed to be the latest and greatest game powered by the EGO engine. As you may recall we covered the release of DiRT2 and were very impressed with the cross platform graphics equality that EGO delivered. Definitely not the case for OF-DR. The video analysis clearly shows how the PlayStation 3 had more issues overall with graphics. Even with the lower quality textures and half the amount of foliage, the PlayStation 3 could not keep with with Xbox 360’s perfomance. Although the texture quality wasn’t as lopsided as Ghostbusters, you could still see Xbox 360 having the slight edge here. It is also worth mentioning that the PlayStation 3 version of OF-DR seems to be running sub 720p.

h2h_ofdr_04

Performance: Hands down the Xbox 360 wins this category. At times the PlayStation 3 screen tore almost for the sake of tearing. From running, to panning the camera, to just shooting the gun, the PlayStation 3 had major performance issues. At times it tore every other frame. Quite disappointing considering EGO performed much better with DiRT2. Here are the breakdowns for performance:

PlayStation 3 Avg. FPS: 28.47 / Xbox 360 Avg. FPS: 29.35
PlayStation 3 Avg. Frame Tear: 36.58% / Xbox 360 Avg Frame Tear: 1.46%

But overall this game was glitchy. In a run through on PlayStation 3, Shawn unloaded a clip on a bad guy. But the guy didn’t drop. So he unloaded a second clip into the bad guy and he still didn’t drop. Turns out, the bad guy died standing up in a running pose. Something similar happened to Drew on the Xbox 360.  For a game totting it’s realism, that’s a rather odd glitch. Another glitch occurred when the AI started spawn camping. We’re sure the game is set to a difficult degree to force you to be more cautious, but having a helicopter hover over your only spawn point seems a little too malicious. Other glitches included sound issues.

Loading: PlayStation 3 gets the win in this category. Although there was a mandatory install lasting 4:50 minutes and weighing in at 2.6gb the load times were nearly ten seconds faster than the Xbox 360. In a game where death comes quickly, you’ll start to feel those extra load times.

Roll over to see the differences. Here we compare the different HDMI settings between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Conclusion: Let us reiterate, this game is not like the CoD or Battlefield series,  it is simulation based and plays more like ArmA. Overall, we didn’t have much fun with OF-DR. But if simulation is your thing, you will have a much different experience. So which version should you purchase? Hands down, the Xbox 360 version. With severe tearing, less foliage, blurry visuals and lower resolution textures the PlayStation 3 is clearly the inferior version here. You can tell that the developers spent far more time polishing DiRT2 to run on the PlayStation 3 than they did with OF-DR. Hopefully future EGO based games will match the cross platform quality that DiRT2 established.

PS3 - Win Xbox 360 wins this Head2Head. A game that wants to be realistic needs to have sharp textures, normal amounts of foliage, minimal screen tearing and frame drops. The Xbox 360 had all of these.

Overall I’m pretty disappointed with OF-DR. I expected Codemasters to deliver the same quality cross platform experience they did for DiRT2. But this clearly wasn’t the case. If I had, and I do mean had, to buy this game I would pick it up for the Xbox 360. Xbox 360 - Win
Corey “…I’m pretty disappointed with OF-DR
To be honest, I wouldn’t buy this game for either platform. Being spawnkilled by the computer after respawning at a checkpoint isn’t my idea of fun. If I had to though, I’d pick this up for the Xbox 360. The added vegetation and lesser screen tearing definitely make the Xbox 360 the way to go.

I’m not into super realistic simulators. They’re accurate to the point of boredom. BUT if I were forced to play one of these “realistic” games, I’d play one that’s based on how I actually see things. Since I don’t overly blink and see as much foliage as the next person, I’d go with the Xbox. It felt like the PS3 had exclusive rights to screen tearing.  But seriously I wouldn’t get this “game”. When you see Uncharted 2 come back here and comment about the Cell then.

      • Gorila_UNIT Gorila_UNIT says:

I have no doubt that Uncharted 2 uses the full of Ps3 as the rest of it’s exclusives but like I said it several times not everyone ca do what Guerilla-Studios did with Killzone 2 which after me is still the best looking game on all consoles.

Too bad multiplats are thousand per year while exclusives are 2-3 maybe up to 5 per year.

Which one do you think gets more played a game that’s on more that one platform or an exclusive?!

        Assassin Creed 2 or Uncharted 2 :D

        • jay fio Tempjf says:

It proves that the PS3 has the hardware to support these great looking games; and when a multi-platform game hits the shelves and the ps3 looks like a ps2 game then we wounder why? If it’s not the PS3 hardware then I wonder what it could be?

          Answer:

        • Rude Sole Rudesole says:

Uncharted 2 looks better than Killzone 2. Uncharted 2 is the best looking game on the planet, so if more people play Assassin Creed 2 rather than Uncharted 2, I say their loss. Trust me when you see it you’ll know why the PS3 is the real deal.

        • Gorila_UNIT Gorila_UNIT says:

Ps2 was hardware wise much inferior that the xbox 1 and yet it still had great looking games mhm like God of War 2 which if you own a Special Collector Edition like I do you can’t play them on your Ps3 … :D :D :D

          The answer:

          far superior NO
          superior NO
          slightly better YES

Uncharted 2 looks better than Killzone 2 you make me laugh :D

We’re actually fighting over which ps3 exclusives look better :D

Well i guess is a matter of taste when u judge and like some games over others. :P

        • Rude Sole Rudesole says:

“Uncharted 2 looks better than Killzone 2 you make me laugh :D ” My point was that ps3 has not hit it’s limit like the Xbox 360 has. Every time a new exclusive come out on the PS3 it raises the BAR again.

        • semi semi says:

to the guy saying the ps2 was weaker than the xbox think again. The situation then is much like it is now. The ps2 had a non-standard processor with different strengths and quoting clock speeds was what got most thinking ps2 was a lot weaker than the xbox… I think.

      • fedora fedora says:

If Uncharted 2 wasnt an exclusive, then veredict would be: Xbox360 LOL.

  2. consolefanboy consolefanboy says:

what is a playstation 3? people play games on this? i thought it was a bluray player, at least that’s what people bought it for right

    • consolefanboy consolefanboy says:

also PS3 does not win on loading.. that’s ridiculous… ofcourse the PS3 wins at loading times, because about each game there’s a mandatory installation, which ofcourse is used to fasten loading times… you can’t compare loading times when you do not install it to the Xbox 360 HDD

      • jay fio Tempjf says:

@consolefanboy. Listen, when the PS3 does a mandatory install it doesn’t install the entire game. If so then the PS3’s HDD would be 1\2 full with one game. A mandatory install installs various key components of the game which helps the PS3 utilizes thees assets\key components quicker. The Xobox on the other hand installs the entire game and not the key components. Now with that said it’s fair because the PS3’s “mandatory” install makes it part of the game and not just an option.

      • Rude Sole Rudesole says:

        @consolefanboy
Well I disagree because that’s a limitation on the Xbox 360 hardware. Not all Xbox 360 have HD so a mandatory install on the Xbox 360 is impossible to enforce.

        • jay fio Tempjf says:

Good point! I’m sure if all Xboxs came with a HD they would enforce the “Mandatory ” install. Hypothetically it’s a smart and obvious method to play a game, since your accessing the HD which is much quicker then the disk. Now a days it only makes sense.

        • GrandMaster R trademarked YakuzaElite says:

          @Rudesole
How is it a limitation on the Xbox? If games required to be partially installed on the PS3 and the loading times are not any better than the Xbox 360’s then that’s the Ps3’s limitation. Don’t you think a mandatory install on any system is a limitation of some sort? Plus, both systems are offering 250 gig hard drives, so there is more than enough space to have instillations on them.

  3. Daniel Daniel says:

Seems like “Codemasters” should master their coding skills a little better.

  4. Johnny 2.0 Johnny 2.0 says:

SO basically you install stuff on the HDD just to help the Blu Ray player run faster.

    Good point!

    • jay fio Tempjf says:

Helps with accessing files faster. Think about it, the PS3 don’t make you install anything, it’s written in the developers code. The developers make you install the games, and believe me they’re doing a crappy job at it. If they were using that feature properly you wouldn’t have such bad compressed textures and cut scenes that look like it was made for the 3DO?

  5. eric eric says:

the hd comments i see in here are true, but you guys also realize that 360 owners that have a hard drive, which is the majority can opt to install the entire game on it right?

i like my ps3 and all, but it freezes up all the time, i lag off of psn constantly, i have none of these problems with my 360. i am so disappointed in the ps3 over all. i say use it for movies and exclusives ONLY. even then though, no guarantees to get away from the ps3 freezing issues.

my ps3 was bought new in april and its been a nightmare with the lock ups. now i cant even log into home on it anymore, and yes i deleted it and redled it- still freezes.

    • jay fio Tempjf says:

And Xbox’s are perfect? hahahah I know people on there sixth one. Please I’ll take a freezing unit over a 5th RROD Xbox!

    • jay fio Tempjf says:

Right! yes you do have the choice to install it on your Xbox but that’s a system feature not a game feature. The mandatory install on PS3 games is written in the code of the game while the Xbox install is hardware related. All I’m saying is that it’s fair to give the win to the PS3 for loading since the mandatory install is written in the games code!

    • Rude Sole Rudesole says:

Yea I know some PS3 owners have had some hardware problems, but please don’t complain about the PS3 having hardware problems when I’m on my 4th Xbox 360. You may have to defrag your hard drive or something. Also like I said above not all Xbox 360 have a hard drive for an install, so devs can’t enforce them.

I do agree that all cross platform games should be owned on the PS3, but wait until you see Uncharted 2. Everything else just looks last gen.

      • jay fio Tempjf says:

hey Rudesole how do you know that Uncharted is so good? Games not even out yet?

      • eric eric says:

sorry i will complain when i contacted sony about my less than 6 month old console and it’s freezing issues they said it may need a repair. i haven’t hardly used the damn thing. also why is it there mister ps3 that it really started acting up with the latest firmware 3.1, and the home update???? can sony not code for their own damn system????

hows it more reliable if sony wants to repair it? if i get rrod it gets repaired, repair is a repair folks. good thing it’s under warranty, because no way in hell would i pay for a repair on a console with i’d say less than 50 total hours of use on it.

fact is i play my 360 more, its 15 months old no problmes, and it runs cooler than my 80 gig ps3. i also put my games onto my 360 harddrive which helps a lot, while ps3 owners have to install part and sometimes most of a game (devil may cry 4) and still have wear and tear on their optical drive.

for gaming purposes reliability aside, because they both suck on that in my opinion the 360 is a whole lot better GAMING console. i use hdmi on my ps3, and LOT head 2 head about call of juarez was dead on, the ps3 just produces blurry low res textures. i know i know , killzone 2 and uncharted 2 don’t seem to have this problem, but 98% of the other games on ps3 do, including metal gear solid 4.

just face it ps3 fanboys, ps3 isn’t the best designed console for gaming. slow blu-ray drive, coupled with memory issues, compounded by the fact that the cell isn’t great for gaming add up to another over-hyped machine by sony corp.

        don’t flame me, i didn’t design it!

    arstechnica.com (http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2007/1/17/6658/p2)
Admittedly, Blu-Ray looks dicey from several non-capacity angles. Blu-Ray movies require a 1.5x Blu-Ray drive, or 54Mbits/second. Sony announced that PS3 uses a 2x BD drive, which is 72Mbits/second or 9MB/second. The Xbox 360 uses a 12x DVD, which should give it about 16MB/second. That is significantly faster for games and will result in shorter load times. And that 12x DVD drive should be a whole lot cheaper.

(Note that the PS3 drive will do 8x DVD, and even that is faster than 2x BD.)

This is not good. One of the ways around this slow loading time is to enable a one-time install of many of the game’s assets onto the hard drive of the PS3. In the case of Genji it decreases load times from 12 seconds to 4 seconds, which is a significant improvement. However, if you buy and play a lot of games, that may lead to some troublesome data management, as even 60GB drives may seem small after installing a few dozen games. Who wants to install their console games anyway? Isn’t this one of the reasons we’re not gaming on a computer?

There is another way around this, if you’re a developer: use the extra space of the Blu-ray disc and make your data redundant. Put important game data on multiple places on the game disc, and that way you decrease the amount of space the laser needs to travel to load the data you use often.

According to this month’s Electronic Gaming Monthly, this is how Oblivion is going to get around the slow-loading issue with its PS3 release. Said Bethesda’s Todd Howard, “Drive speed matters more to me [than total capacity], and Blu-ray is slower.”

Of course, if you use data redundancy to boost speeds the way Bethesda is, you may very well eat up the extra space of that Blu-ray disc without being able to fit any more information on the disc than you would have put on a standard DVD-9. The advantage of the media is compromised, and all that remains is a higher price.
So there you go: you can either install game assets on the hard drive or place redundant game data around the disc. The problem with both of these solutions is that one of the advantages of Blu-ray become less compelling. Why bother with a large Blu-ray disc when you’re putting that data on the hard drive before you play anyway? You could have simply put that extra information on a DVD and then moved it onto the hard drive. The same can be said about the redundancy approach: why not just use a standard DVD and have it load quickly in the first place instead of doubling or tripling up your data on a slower but larger disc?

  10. Freezing Freezing says:

My PS3 freezes up all the time as well. It frozes several times at the same spot in inFamous (the bit where you’re trying to disable those balloons), and other games have randomly frozen as well (Burn Zombie Burn and WipEout HD being the main culprits). It’s really annoying. The 360 is a FAR better gaming console than the PS3. The only good things about the PS3 is the maybe 2 good exclusives it gets per year. Other than that you end up with shittier versions of games that you can play on a much shittier online system, and almost every game eats up 2GB+ of your hard drive.

They really should install the 360 version of this game to compare the loading times, or at least mention loading times from disc and when it’s installed. If it’s supposed to be an “out of the box” comparison then the PS3 loses, cos it took over 5 minutes to load due to a forced install. Once again the PS3 loses to an Xbox 360 Arcade though!

“Native 1080p non of the current consoles can do that not even the mighty Ps3″

Are you talking about GTA4 or games in general? Both the 360 and the PS3 have games that run natively 1080p.

The XBOX360 however pushes all games to 1080p from their original resolution. The PS3 only does so on DVDs or PS2 games(if you have a BC system.) So if you want a game to run in 1080p on the PS3 that isn’t natively in 1080p, you have to set your tv that way.

Every PS3 game that says 1080p on the back of the box actually runs 1080p as well. Every 360 game that says 1080p on the back of the box, err, every game, is falsely advertised because they don’t all run 1080p. The 360 upscales to 1080p for every game while you have to set your tv to upscale if you want the PS3 to show 1080p upscaling.

Don’t comment my english, i’m from holland.

Codemasters is prolly a little lazy or did’nt have much time to perfect the game. Cause obviously online is crap at any platform atm.

We all know the xbox 360 is a modded pc. we al know CM is a close friend with intel. They worked very hard to get fully potential out of ther I7 processor. And worked hard to get their game working for quad processors and dual processors are a major different thing. And since the X360 is a modded pc anyways, it’s very simple to port and program and port thisgame to the xbox 360.

Wich lead codemasters to have no time left for programming such a good game for the cell processor. and with the lack of time the cell processor is no use for this game and is hanging laid back.

My point is, thishas nothing to do with a manufacturing problem of any platform. Thisis all the developers fault named code master.

  16. Ninto Ninto says:

I like the work you guys do at LoT but I have a couple of requests, could you please provide input on how the graphics impact gameplay in any way, and if so how does it affect it on both systems for better or for worse. I don’t just mean that one has more foliage while the other or is shinier. Does the foliage really matter? For instance does increase in foliage allow more of a stealth approach on the 360 version as opposed to the ps3 one? It seems like it should but if the characters don’t crouch low enough or go prone it wouldn’t really matter.

For another example, I’ve read that the sniping is difficult because of the draw distance limitations. Is that true?

Perhaps I am mistaken though in thinking that you analyze gameplay in any way for these head 2 heads in regards to graphics.

Personally I don’t care either way who wins. I’d actually prefer no consensus if it would reduce the number of fanboys on both sides racing in to place their first comments to start another battle for these nonexistant and meaningless flamewars who spout nothing more then equivalents of “My system is the greatest and your system sucks.” Why does anyone feel a need to fight for a system, let the companies do battle for themselves and enjoy games and your life. Their competition is our win because that ensures that different games will come out for platforms and genres and graphics will move forward.

    thank you for your time

    • Biggie Biggie says:

That’s what they said they do, but the only time it has come up was in the Batman AA review. It would be interesting to know if they fell that the graphical differences have an effect on enjoyment and playability.

  21. Garland Garland says:

Once again, PS3 fails. Isn’t this surprising? LOL!

This is why I only use my PS3 for Blu-Ray & exclusives now. Ever since PS3 launched, it’s been proven time & time again that the 360 is the better gaming machine.

Plus I’ll bet you that the graphics in Uncharted 2 can also be done on the 360 in less development time & money, if given the chance.

  22. Wut? Wut? says:

Who cares? It’s a video game on two different consoles. I don’t understand why people compare the graphics, usually if you own a system, you buy the game for that system. Your main demographic is teenagers with no money. It’s not like they are going to go out and buy a whole other system just to get the “best” graphics.

And making a site dedicated to comparing screenshots is just overkill. Stop, please stop.

Wut? – If you don’t care, why are you here? Why do you want them to stop? It’s not cos you own a PS3 and the 360 constantly winning is annoying you, is it? ;)

As an owner of both consoles I like to see how they compare.

It’s insane that 52 people voted for the PS3 version, lol. They must think that if it wins the poll, it suddenly becomes the better looking game. Fanboyism at its worst.

  25. Theo D L1qu1d says:

I wonder how good this game is if my 360 RRODs….

I personally only use my 360 for exclusives and same with my ps3. I buy most games on PC, since the graphics are untouched by both.

In terms of over all power

    PC > PS3 > 360

In terms of production, in which case visuals turn out better

    PC > 360 > PS3

The PS3 Power can be at an advantage, but the process to take full control of the hardware is a longer road.

If used properly the PS3 can achieve a higher goal.

Over all it is a more powerful machine, if ppl can’t see that, they are blinded by fanboysim.

By how much we don’t know, but it is. Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 have been stated that they can’t be done on the other console.

Anyways looks much better on 360 here:)

    • Gorila_UNIT Gorila_UNIT says:

      I agree with you L1qu1d

Ps3 can do some very good looking games
but like I said up there not everyone can do what Guerilla-Studios did with Killzone 2.

Far Cry 2 porting to PS3 and 360 from PC. 360 needed 3 people to do the job while PS3 needed 14.

Cheaper and easyer to make on the 360 which one do you think today developers will choose?!
This is going to forever eclipse that extra power the ps3 has.

Both of them can render 3D games so stating that Uncharted of any other Ps3 exclusive is imposible to do on 360 is laughable :D
Possible but not looking as good as that’s realistic.

Fact is 2-3 good looking exclusives don’t make up for the hundreds of multiplats that look better on the 360…

      Peace!

360 is a good console, but its about as reliable as a Ford T-model.

The failiure rate is too much to even use a word as small as recall.

I would praise microsoft if they ever fixed the problem properly and offer the buyers a recall on the item, or atleast pay 50$.

Then I’d respect them to the max.
Till then, they are just money hungry/Lazy idiots.

I had no problems with my first Xbox, its still running todate.

    PS3 on 24/7
    360 2 hrs a day if any

Not trying to bad mouth the console on its games, because its library is epic, and the fact that I can play all my old Xbox games just makes me a happy bastard.
But my god….I fell sorry for elite buyers who paid full price!

    • Garland Garland says:

Um, they’ve been fixing the problem on RROD’s already. The newer 360 models are just as reliable as the PS3 is now. RROD will still occur, but just rarely.

      • Theo D L1qu1d says:

Actually no they didn’t Even with the Jaspers the Rate is extremely high for a 5 year running product? and it took em 4 years? give me a break 6-8 months of inconsistent gaming because of RROD and the wait for the refurbished.

I love both my 360 and ps3 but honestly each have their problems.

PS3 with lack of consistency in game quality (multiplats) and 360 with the constant whining like a b1tch.

        Frankly I miss my Dreamcast:)

“Actually no they didn’t Even with the Jaspers the Rate is extremely high for a 5 year running product?”

Spot the PS3 fanboy! What exactly is the failure rate for the Jasper revision? Oh yeah, you have no idea. Stop trying to divert away from the PS3’s extremely poor performance as a gaming box with lies.

    • Theo D L1qu1d says:

Give it time, remember the major thing they did on the Jasper was a die shrink and slight tweaking of the power rails.

And I’m no fanboy, I tell it like it is. What was the point of me buying the 360 since 2005 if I can just play it properly now?

Plus ppl are oblivious at the fact that RROD isn’t the ONLY problem the 360 has its one of many. Like the biggest issue with the CD scratching.
PS3 had a similar issue with launch ps3 where some ps3s had Blue Ray Drive failures.

What I do like about my 360 is the 3 yr coverage. Sony is 1 year, then ur screwed if you have to pay.

  31. Kevboard Kevboard says:

Next time, install the F****** 360 version! the loading time will be mutch faster, and its fair as long as the ps3 version needs to be installed!

    • Rude Sole Rudesole says:

Hey Numb Nuts not all Xbox 360 comes with a Hard Drive so installing the game in a comparison skews the results. And BTW unless the Developers optimized the game o for HD installs, it won’t make one lick of a difference. Halo ODST is the only game that I know of that is optimized for an Install. It’s says it on the back of the box.

  32. Lies Lies says:

“Hey Numb Nuts not all Xbox 360 comes with a Hard Drive so installing the game in a comparison skews the results. And BTW unless the Developers optimized the game o for HD installs, it won’t make one lick of a difference.”

Nonsense. Eurogamer tested the difference in loading times with games when NXE first came out. Here’s some of the results: -

Half-Life 2 – 22 seconds quicker to load when installed
GTA IV – 12.5 seconds quicker to load when installed
Mass Effect – 5 seconds quicker to load when installed

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/new-xbox-experience-dvd-vs-hard-disk-face-off-article

In fact every game they tested saw an improvement in loading times apart from Halo 3.

Lens of Truth should test the loading times when games are installed, because otherwise you’re just comparing an Xbox 360 Arcade to a PS3 – and the PS3 still loses most of the time, lol.

    • Rude Sole Rudesole says:

And what about Halo 3, whats happens when you install it.

      http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/932/932273p1.html

“But the bottom line is that, for games that were developed and released before Microsoft released specs on the new hard drive install feature, performance may actually decrease with full game installation rather than increase. Bungie is now recommending that you not install Halo 3 to the hard drive if you want the game to perform optimally. Will other developers come forward and do the same? ”

so there you go Numb Nuts.

  33. Lies Lies says:

BTW, if the PS3 version loads faster than the 360 version when its running from disc, but not when the 360 version is installed, then they can still give the win to the PS3 in the loading category for all I care. I’m just interested to see how much of a performance boost you get when installing the latest games. Nearly all of the people who care enough to read these comparisons are likely to have a 360 with a hard drive anyway IMO, so they’d find the data useful.

    • Rude Sole Rudesole says:

Yea but How many people with a Hard Drive can afford an 8 GIG install. Don’t know about you but with all my Xbox live games and demos I have about 300 meg left of free space. So yea an install on the Xbox 360 is just stupid.

      • Chrit Sengphrachanh fullmetal297 says:

The optional HDD install isn’t “stupid” just because you can’t save one game to yours. A game saved onto a hdd is proven to load quicker than running on a disc, and people like “Lies” who have enough space wants to know how much of performance increase one gets from these installs.
You on the other another hand want to deprive these people of this knowledge because you feel threaten of xbox 360 potential victories over loading times.

        • Rude Sole Rudesole says:

Maybe you didn’t get the point from my last 20 comments about this.

FIRST: The Xbox 360 Developers need to have optimized the game for an install to work correctly. Games like Halo 3 for example actually break when you install the game. But Halo ODST states on the back of the box that ODST has been optimized for an install.

SECOND: A mandatory install for the PS3 means exactly that, MANDATORY you can’t play the game without it so the Developers decide that the install is part of the game, and something MANDATORY is not an option and can not be weighed in.

LASTLY: The PS3 does not install the entire game only key elements of the game, but on the other hand the Xbox 360 installs the entire game. Also 95% of Xbox 360 owners probably only have an Xbox with a 20GB HD making an 8GB install impossible and stupid.

        • jay fio Tempjf says:

          Wow.. Someone hasn’t been reading!

  34. Lies Lies says:

The install is 6.3 GB, not 8 GB. I install all of the games I’m currently playing. In fact I have 13 full 360 games installed along with 57 XBLA games and a load of DLC and I still have nearly 9 GB left on my 120 GB drive.

Rudesole is talking sh*t. First he says that installs have no benefit when they clearly can make a huge difference, then he tries to claim that they’re “stupid” just cos he doesn’t have the room on his drive. lol. He probably doesn’t even own an Xbox 360, cos he seems to know very little about them and he’s clearly just trolling.

    Here’s how it compares: -

From pressing A to launch the game until the first intro graphic plays: -

    From disc = 23 seconds
    Installed = 13 seconds

    First level load time: -

    From disc = 45 seconds
    Installed = 30 seconds

A considerable decrease in loads times!

    • Rude Sole Rudesole says:

Well in theory having installed the entire game there should be absolutely no load times.

And again, lately some games on the Xbox 360 due in fact take advantage of an install so your other 12 games do nothing with it.

      • Rude Sole Rudesole says:

Oh you might be interested in this?

        • Lies Lies says:

Are you actually retarded? Halo 3 was the only game that had worse loading times after being installed. The article clearly shows that, you silly troll. Operation Flashpoint shows a vast improvement once it’s installed – enough to take the loading win away from the PS3, which is what you’re really annoyed about. LOL.

“Well in theory having installed the entire game there should be absolutely no load times.”

What theory is that? The “I don’t know dick about computer games” theory? Have you ever played PC games? They’re installed in full and they still have loading times. Stop trolling, you retarded PS3 fanbot. It must annoy you that the PS3 nearly always loses these Head2Heads to an Xbox 360 Arcade, LOL, but that’s just the way it is.

        • Chrit Sengphrachanh fullmetal297 says:

You are using baseless claims to make pointless arguments. I’ve been saving games onto my original xbox using XMBC and they load much faster than running on disc. Same goes for my psp. I’ve been making iso copies from my umds and they load much faster. Hell, I’ve copy and paste games onto my external hdd running it on my PC. Games don’t have to optimized to run on hdd.

I’m all for knowledge and would like to see lensoftruth include the hdd install in future HeadtoHeads. It wouldn’t hurt anyone to include this info, and the staff did say they want what’s best for gamers.

      • Rude Sole Rudesole says:

@Lies and you but buddy fullmetal297

Yea I use my PC for what is supposed to be used for, surfing websites and running paint. I play video games on a VIDEO GAME CONSOLE. So let me ask you why would I install 8GIG game to squeeze out 2 second faster load time you idiot. Seems point less to me.

And did you read this part”games that were developed and released before Microsoft released specs on the new hard drive install feature, performance may actually decrease with full game installation rather than increase”

        • Lies Lies says:

Ah, I see your problem now. You’re incapable of reading and comprehending basic English. Let’s just see where you’ve been wrong so far: –

Installing games on the 360 doesn’t improve performance – WRONG
The install for OF:DR is 8 GB – WRONG
The install improves loading times by 2 seconds – WRONG
95% of 360 owners only have a 20 GB hard drive – WRONG
Installing a game should mean no loading times at all – IDIOTIC

The install is 6.3 GB and results in the console being much quieter as the disc isn’t spinning in the drive, it means there’s less wear and tear on the drive, and it means there’s a noticeable improvement in load times, as I posted above. Stop trolling, retard. You don’t even own an Xbox 360. If you have to lie to make the PS3 sound good, it can’t be that great. It’s always the same with Sony fanbots.

        • Chrit Sengphrachanh fullmetal297 says:

Just arguing with this guy, Lies. Like all Fanboys, he won’t stop at nothing to get he wants. We all know his real intentions for not wanting to include the installs in future HeadstoHeads, and he will baseless claims and made-up statistics to fuel his selfish brigade.

I don’t about you Lies, but I am not arguing for the sake of arguing. Like I said before, I want to see these installs for the sake of knowledge. I and many other 360 owners actually want to see the performance increase for them.

i never cared about the RROD problem, but i knew one day it would happen. my system lasted 2 years, and got the RROD. not bad.. what was bad was microsoft sending me a unit that isnt compatible with my power supply. how am i suppose to hook it up with the hookups they TOLD me to keep? i got this back today and im still 360 dead.

but i just updated my ps3 to 3.01 after updating it last week to 3.00 and learned that update killed thousands of systems.

so who cares what game is best on what system if the damn systems dont work?

Remember some ppl still have their 360 from launch some how. So the test is can be luck of the 360.

But in all seriousness, the 4 year count that it took Microsoft to make a working product will have a major impact when xbox 720 or w.e will be released.

I still have my 2008 xbox working fine, but I also don’t tempt the Gods by only play here and there on it.

  38. Yorck Yorck says:

Apparently all of you didn’t understand the purpose of this site. This site’s intentions is not to create more confusion or make you argue which console is better. It is simply trying to help those with 2 platforms decide on which console should I buy my multi-platform game!! games nowadays are expensive and to know on which console they operate better is a gamer rights.

Now it is pity that first party games look great on the PS3 but multi-platform ones still look better on the 360. I’m saying so not because I’m on PS3’s side but because 3rd party developers do not know till nowadays how to program an engine or to write a code that its results look similar on both consoles.

Now I do understand that its impossible for a game to look 100% identical on both machines but it can look 95% identical and therefore I do not understand why 3rd party developers still failed nowadays to render textures at least decently on the PS3.

We all know that the PS3 can handle any high definition texture and sometimes even better than the 360 because of the more capacity that the machine offer and the more sophisticated architecture which allows many processes to run simultaneously using the 7 SPEs. However 3rd party developers do not want to spend more money on tools to get the most out of the PS3 (like 1st party developers do) and on top of that do not know how to tweak the hardware and especially how to use the SPEs.

Now I still think there is hope in the future if developers get serious and think about gamers and how much they pay to play their games, and start to tweak the hardware to at least know how to render textures on PS3 correctly and to raise the performance as well.

This is not of course because I prefer the PS3 on the 360 but because gamers shouldn’t be cheated further, paying 60 euros per game to get an inferior copy than the ones on the 360.

This site should educate you to address 3rd party developers to let them understand that we are aware of the differences in quality between the same product (however different console) which costs on both machines the same amount of money and especially that this amount is already high enough to let them understand that there is a lack in their performance and not the console’s performance!!

  39. Yorck Yorck says:

    It is about time!

  40. lens2 lens2 says:

Wait there, in previous comparisons it was a draw for hdd installs + waiting time versus loading time on 360 without hdd installs/

Now I see the trend is to always give the PS3 an advantage in the loading category because it will have a faster load time with an install compared to 360 reading of a disc.

PS3 will always win this comparison then.

    Highly unfair marking criteria.

    • junk3d junk3d says:

Not the case. There are MANY games in which the PlayStation 3 requires a hard drive installation and is either equal or slower than the Xbox 360. Very rarely does the install actually increase speed. Installation on the PlayStation 3 is a means to an end to resolve the slow Blu-ray throughput.

Also, let it rest on the “install to the 360 hard drive” issue. They judge games out of the box…plain and simple.

  41. Davo Davo says:

i still find it funny that most ps3 owners still believe the ps3 is a more powerful machine than the 360…..its not,for all the huff and puff around cell and blu ray (courtesy of sony marketing) time and time again it has delivered below par titles when compared to the 360.

Developers are not lazy…they are just dealing with inferior hardware and any game that you spend 3+ years exclusivly for one console is bound to look good..you could get a pretty good looking version of killzone 2 on the nintendo wii if developers spent the amount of time and money most sony first partys do but the fact that the 360 does it quicker, easier and better than the ps3 the fanboys dismiss it as lazy.

    • shakengandulf shakengandulf says:

      HAHAHA

    • THAT Davo? THAT Davo? says:

Cause it is. If you just go by raw processing power, the PS3 is slightly ahead. A million shoddy ports won’t change that either. I am also not sure where you got that 3+ years development figure from or why you think it might be relevant. Do you want to claim all PS3 exclusives took 3 or more years and games on other platforms never do? Or what else is the point of it? :>

That being said, exclusives on PS3, multiplatform games on PC. That way you have the best visuals and you cover most recent games. ;-)
