Lens of Truth takes Batman Head2Head inside Arkham Asylum.

The Lens of Truth is very excited to be able to put Batman to the test with a Head2Head in his new game, Batman: Arkham Asylum. We have to say, Batman surely put up a good fight on both systems, but  we are happy to say we believe Batman does better on one console. So watch the video and see for yourself.

h2h_batman_aa_00027

Watching the video proves that Batman: Arkham Asylum is one of the most nicely ported games for the current consoles. Overall, the gameplay seems the same and, for the most part, if you only had one console you shouldn’t feel left out. However the Devil (or Joker) is in the details and when you nitpick this game across the platforms, it’s a close one but we believe there’s a dominant console here. This was a tough one. The biggest problem was that Batman: AA didn’t run perfectly on either system. When one system seemed to be winning, the other system countered with its own advantage. For example, while the Xbox 360 had occlusion shadows (SSAO), the PlayStation 3 had more defined self-shadows on the guards in their interrogation cutscenes.

h2h_batman_aa_00112

Another issue came from the cameras as pointed out towards the end of the video. Although it seemed like both systems were rendering at the same size, the Xbox 360’s camera was zoomed in, in comparison to the PlayStation 3. This means that on the PlayStation 3, you could see your surroundings better, which helps out when you’re being attacked by multiple bad guys. A zoomed in camera may not be a big issue until you’re in close quarters and not sure where to go because you can’t see as much.

h2h_batman_aa_00017

Some issues just couldn’t be explained. As seen in the video, when you zoom in on the glass in PlayStation 3, the camera generates some odd artifacting. The Xbox 360 doesn’t have this issue, and quite honestly, we haven’t seen an issue like this before. The truth is that although this seems to be an issue on only one console, it’s only an issue when you zoom in on glass.

h2h_batman_aa_00120

Roll over image to see differences in shadows on the chest.

Roll over image to see differences in occlusion shadows.

Roll over image to see differences in cameras.

Roll over image to see differences in textures.

Roll over image to see differences in water (including bar of blur at bottom).

This race was so tight, we had to go back to the video again and keep a score card per shot. To our surprise, the score card sided in favor of the PlayStation 3. The PlayStation 3 won with better mipmapping, better overall shadows, better self-shadows, a better camera view, and better light sources. It wasn’t a run away win, though. It is important to note that the Xbox 360 won for the glass issue, occlusion shadows, motion blur, and we even gave a point to Xbox 360 for having a cleaner texture on the Wayne building. The PlayStation 3 wanted the win so badly, it got exclusive with the Joker and it’s really hard to say ‘no’ to a clown. Although the exclusive Joker played no part in the video Head2Head, we have to say that for your money, you’re obviously getting more on one console, and that’s the point of the entire comparison.

G R A P H I C S
PS3 - Win Although both consoles had issues, the PlayStation 3 had a few less and having a camera that shows more helps when being attacked from all angles, or if you need to find a place to hide. Xbox 360 - Win
P E R F O R M A N C E
PS3 - Win Both consoles dropped frames and there was screen tearing. It would have been nice to see one console with neither screen tearing nor frame skipping.
Xbox 360 - Win
C O N T R O L
PS3 - Win Tie. Identical controls.
Xbox 360 - Win
L O A D I N G
PS3 - Win Tie. The PlayStation 3 has a 1 gig install that took only 3 minutes and yet one could argue that with a mandatory install, PlayStation 3 should have performed better. However the latter could counter that if the Xbox 360 had a mandatory install it should have done better…which we know is impossible since not everyone has a hard drive.
Xbox 360 - Win
O U T C O M E
PS3 - Win Although we’re pretty sure you’re gonna be happy with buying Batman: Arkham Asylum on either console, we believe the PlayStation 3 is the better game even if it wasn’t a perfect win.

The fact is for a better GAMEPLAY experience the PS3 wins. in the end i’d rather see more of the game I am playing (and the joker). no or no?

Either way a game is a game. One as spectacular as this one has no virtual comparison. Free flow combat is spectacular so it shouldn’t really matter the system you intend to play on and the driving force causes a real reason to play. Instead of feeling an odd character we’re already familiar with the Dark Knight. But this game causes the gamer to get more involved and more experienced within the “nut-house”. Receiving a 91% on Game-rankings and coming with another sequel Batman: Arkham Asylum gives you a good feeling when you finish the game. Unlike Dead Space (which was a amazing game, a must play), this was like Resident Evil 4 when you’re finished you feel good that you’ve done something to help someone other then yourself. Unfortunately though once everyone is done we begin to realise its just a game, and we cannot experience those “blasting walls moments”, or “saving the girl” in real life. This drives us to purchase the sequel, to literally get away from life. Games like these are the best because they’re extremely addictive, no question about it.

    “Wheres your professionality went”

Maybe it went to the same place as your grammar. Besides, some of the screenshots look better for the Xbox and some look better for the ps3(i’d rather have a full image than an image with a bar of blur on the bottom half). The VIDEO shows the ps3 win. I think if you add the joker and sixaxis, the ps3 delivers more than just a background shadow. I’d rather have the joker than a shadow. Answer me this, what does joker’s shadow look like on the xbox? Oh that’s right, it’s not there, cause he’s not there!

The Joker is cool but matter not as the challenges were you can use them suck. The game is amazing but after I played the challenges once that was it for me. An really do people actually believe Joker is exclusive give it 3 months the the Darth
Vader and Yoda thing on SC4. And I played Joker on my PS3 the challenges still suck now if you would have told me I can use him in the game then that would have been an other story.

I actually just finished the campaign for Batman: AA about an hour ago. What a great game. I can’t stress enough how great this game is. Do yourself a favor and play it. The 360 is the console I played it on. But I did actually downloaded the demos for both the PS3 and the 360 when it released, to see if I could spot any difference. I wasn’t able to see any, but I didn’t have any video capture software to use. I just switched between the inputs on my TV while both demos were running. Didn’t work very well. :) But I kind of wish I would have noticed the 360 being zoomed in farther than the PS3. I’m not sure if it would have swayed my desicion or not, had I known… but it would have been nice to know there was a weird difference between the two. Only a couple times during the entire campaign did the camera ever become slightly problematic from being too close. It’s good to know that these games were very close, other than their own few graphical oddities. Thanks again for the Head 2 Head!

PS- I’m curious why the video looks so pixelated/jaggy. It’s almost as if there is no AA being used, which I’m pretty sure they both consoles use. My game doesn’t look nearly that pixelated, on either console. Is that just due to the method of video capture?

I enjoy these articles, but wonder why you guys always compare controls if they’re always tied? 360 and PS3 controllers both have the same number of buttons in (more or less) the same places, so maybe drop the category?

Even though I mostly agree with the verdict, I have to disagree with you on the verdict for Batman AA. I actually played both retail copies, first the ps3 and the 360, my ps3 version stop reading so I picked up the 360 version. So, to cary one, I disagree with you guys on the terms of graphics because I noticed so much anti-aliasing on the ps3 copy, and felt that the 360 version is smoother and ran a stable rate. Well that my two cents and continue doing what you guys do.

I agree with Garland and Richard Master. I use to love this website until I discovered Digital Foundry. Before this comparison was put up I still believed in Lens of Truth. But no more. You guys may have lost some of your Sony Fanboys by saying most games looked better on the 360, which they did. But you guys were telling the TRUTH! Now this comes along and EVERYONE, (Digital Foundry, IGN, Myself) believes this game looks better on 360. Because it does! Seriously, I know you guys used the Joker as a slight deciding factor and the camera zoom, which is so small of a difference that I can’t tell. But if I were to guess Batman1990 has the correct theory on the camera issue. I have played both versions, and the 360 is leaps and bounds cleaner and more pleasing to look at. So I do have to regret to inform you guys that I no longer will be taking your word for the supposed TRUTH. Anyone reading this go to http://www.eurogamer.net/digitalfoundry/ for serious information. Lensoftruth, you brought this upon yourself. Shame on you.

And whats with everything saying the camera is off on the 360? The PC version is just like the 360 version so its the PS3 that has the camera to far away. Mostly to hide how it not as good looking and so they can add blur to hide that fact.

“All you punks care about is how a game looks on paper”.Its quite amusing that you would say that, considering that how a console looks on paper is all Ps3 owners seem to care about. The fact that Ps3 has very few exclusives a free but inferior online system, and usually sub par graphics on games that are multiplatform, doesn’t bother them, as long as its written on a scrap of paper somewhere that it has more this and that they’re fine. But all I care about is games and the 360 usually comes out on top.Speaking of punks you come off as the most loud mouth arrogant person here,so please pipe down baby.

a note to add you can find he Limited Ed if you go to more than 1 store + there is a little fact that because of the install base lest limited ED versions are made for the PS3 on Batman the Collectors Ed was made about 65/35 that means 65% of the full total of limited ED were made for the higher install base of the 360. Same happened with Street Fighter IV and RE5 many others. Sorry was it not SFIV and RE5 other games that sucks balls on the PS3 sorry. Tempjf it’s funny how no one backs you up because you know that we are right. As for paper? what? what does that have to do with anything. I’ve PLAYED both. in MOTION. And collector’s edition? WTF does that have to do with anything. And just to piss you off I work at a gamestop in MO and we have a collectors edition for both 360 and PS3. We started off with like 5 for 360 and 2 for PS3 because like dark666 said, more people bought it for the system more people have. But 1 person for both systems didn’t pick them up so now we are stuck with those damn huge, useless things. but whatever, PS3 sucks, get over it, it looks better on 360 end of story. And this time if you respond don’t change the subject to something gay like, “well the graphics on (insert sony exclusive[what little there is]) looks better than ANY game on 360. Because that is arguable and will be beaten down buy REAL logic and has nothing to do with THIS game which you have been trying to defend on the console you wasted money on. LOL

What about Metal Gear 4 that never appear on X box 360 (could have but didn’t)? Does that make xbox suck? Thats so childish…

As for Batman AA, the graphics on Xbox are marginally better from what I have seen…more content is better than 1% better graphics…

Just because MGS 4 wasn’t on the 360 doesn’t mean that the 360 sucks.

Do you even know WHY MGS 4 couldn’t be “done” on the 360? It was because of the uncompressed sound. It was only because of that. It occupied most of the bluray’s space.

MGS 4 isn’t even ran in Real HD, it was only ran in 1024 x 768 (with temporal 2xAA). Go back & look through the link that I posted if you don’t believe me.

note to add the next MG game will be on 360 and don’t forget that the trick with bluray is that for games to load in less than an hour on the PS3 it has to be uncompress and funny thing is even with the all mighty cell games load faster on the 360 100% of the time.

Just played the 360 version after playing the PS3 version to death last month and the differences are unmistakable, the PS3 version truly rapes the 360 one. Visually it may not be a HUGE difference, but the PS3 camera is a major, major improvement on the 360 zoomed in shit. Couple this with the far better DLC on PS3, and there simply is NO question as to which version is superior here.

Surprised to see AA not mentioned, of which the 360 has 2xMSAA while the PS3 has none.

The 360 has a lower res making the screen look more zoomed in than the PS3, which would really get on my nerves in combat. Both games look great but there are some minor differences. For example, water effects look better on the PS3 while certain smaller details (logo on the guards arm for example) was less blurred on the 360.

Both versions has their ups and downs and they both look and run great. Still, the less zoomed in screen of the PS3 version is what seals the deal.
