Which version of Battlefield 1943 wins this Head2Head?

Welcome back for another exciting Head2Head; this time we focus our attention on Battlefield 1943. Battlefield 1943 is a lot like Battlefield Bad Company: they both use the Frostbite Engine and they both have destructible environments that can be literally leveled to rubble. So which version can claim conquest and superiority over the other?

bf_1943_07

Battlefield 1943 consists of 3 maps which are all based on islands and are different enough to make each map feel special. There is an additional map which will be unlocked once the community reaches 42,000,000 kills. Each and every map is massive and would take minutes to travel from one end to the other, if not for the well-placed vehicles. When the level starts, it does so with you either on land or a aircraft carrier, the latter includes a few stationary AA guns and two airplanes, which are very much a first-spawn first-served kind of deal. Then, hanging off the side of the carrier, are landing crafts which can be used to ferry people to the shore.

bf_1943_10

Both version seem to perform identically, keeping a consistent frame rate with no noticeable frame tearing on the screen. Both versions were missing any type of anti-aliasing whatsoever, creating for some very jagged edges. Again, there were no signs of any differences when it came to lighting and physics; both versions managed to stay on par with one another. Finally, the level of destruction was absolutely awesome, and absolutely the same across the board. We consistently tested this theory by tossing a grenade into a building’s window and then stepped back to watch the entire structure explode into pieces tossing tons of wood chunks and debris all over the place.

The graphics were good considering the entire download comes in at around 565mb’s, but Battlefield 1943 did have some issues to talk about, and one version had a few more. First off, there were occasional pop-in issues, especially with shadows of objects, which was not limited to one version but the Xbox 360 version did handle their shadow LOD’s more efficiently. A perfect example of this was seen while driving the boat under a bridge. The Xbox 360 version had the bridge shadow cascading down on top of the water and was clearly visible the entire time, but the PS3 version only appeared when the boat was literally inches away from the bridge.

Another area where the Xbox 360 differed again was with the texture quality and resolution. The Xbox 360 version looked more detailed and polished when compared side by side to the PS3 version. For example, the entire ground texture on the PS3 version was missing a very noticeable normal map texture that the Xbox 360 version had throughout the entire terrain. Not only was the normal map missing on the PS3 version, there were certain textures that seemed to be half of resolution of the Xbox 360 version was displaying (please refer to the tank rollover above).

Away from this Head2Head, Battlefield 1943 was a lot of fun to play, especially online. The price reflects tremendous value as it provides one of the best multiplayer experiences around. While the graphics weren’t Killzone 2 in any way, Battlefield 1943 was no slouch by any means. Considering the cost, simple gameplay, high replay, and the small download size, Battlefield 1943 just set the bar as to what digital distribution should be.

the problem is the game developer. not the ps3. they don’t want to spend the time to make games for ps. if they make the game for ps3 1 disc not 3 like the xbox needs. ps3 is always been better than xbox.

This comparison was accurate for the most part, but the 360 version did have some noticeable instances of screen tearing that I didn’t see in the PS3 version. Since screen tearing is my worst enemy, I preferred the PS3 version even with all of its other faults.

I have both consoles and the PS3 is not “far superior”. That’s a joke. The 360 tends to outperform it on most games. The PS3 might have 2 or 3 games that arguably could be considered to be slightly more advanced than any game on the 360 so far, but that doesn’t make the PS3 far superior.

In fact, if I had to take an average of all the graphics I have seen on the two consoles I would have to say that, if anything, the 360 has the superior performance.

Actually psykosonikninja, PS3’s hardware is “far superior” than the 360. Most multiplatform games are outperformed by the 360 and not the PS3 because, as it was already proven/established that PS3 is difficult to develop on due to its complex architecture, and developers are used to the 360’s hardware because it came 1 year before the ps3, and many developers got used to 360’s architecture. And the reason why I claimed, and why it was already proven that PS3’s hardware is “far superior” than the 360 is because there is not even a single 360 exclusive, that looks as good as a PS3’s exclusive. And besides exclusives, there are also factual evidences that prove that PS3’s hardware is superior.

And how could you possible say “there is not even a single 360 exclusive, that looks as good as a PS3’s exclusive”, Gears of War 2 looks 99999 times better then resistance 2. Now stop saying bull s**t stuff, and acting like it’s fact.

Oh, and on, off, rgb, high, low, can’t create the missing shadows, the missing normal maps, raise texture resolutions. Either it’s there or it’s not.Here….it’s not on PS3. Deal with it.

Actually it won’t. a 256×256 texture will always be 256×256 no mater how much resolution your T.V. can do. So as I said before it will not fix texture resolution that can only be done with the original source image file. So you change and adjust all the setting in the world and it’s not gonna fix texture resolution.

Actually paradox, PS3 owners don’t regret having the PS3 as their primary system, because it has far more exclusives than the 360 and even some multiplatform games are outperformed by the PS3 such as wanted and oblivion and more. and actually, 360 owners should regret having a 360 as their primary console because of its “issues” and i strongly believe you know what I’m talking about, and not only that, it barely has any exclusives coming up in the future.

This article is completely pointless considering its a ported game… unless this game was developed from ground up for each console then there really is no point comparing the two versions… please stop making articles like this just to attempt to get more people to visit your website… its just sad and quite frankly stupid.

Trying to compare consoles based on a port is useless because ported games are programmed by people who’s purpose is to only make sure the game will work on the machine its being ported to. Their job isn’t to make each game work to it’s optimum performance…

The point is to inform those of us that own both consoles so that we can make an educated decision as to which version to purchase.

This site is precisely why I own Prince of Persia, Chronicles of Riddick and Mirror’s Edge on my PS3 and Bioshock, Ghost Busters and Red Faction on my 360 and not the other way around.

I’m glad a site like this exists so that when I decide to purchase a multi-platform title I choose the best version.

Frankly, the only reason to be upset about it is if you only own one of the two consoles and you feel like your console of choice is getting a bad rap. In that case, get over it. They’ve both got their advantages and disadvantages and (other than RRoD issues that I’m bitter about) they’re both quality consoles.

Exactly, because they didn’t, if they had set time apart to develop an engine that specifically utilized the PS3’s hardware (Uncharted2 for instance) then I guarantee it would have been the superior graphical version of the game… But that is not the case.

Games like Resident Evil 5, Blazblue, Street fighter 4, all play superior on the ps, have you guys ever tried to play a serious fighting game on the 360 pad? if you have and say it plays fine, then it’s stated, you are bribed by Mr.Gates.

I really have to question whether this site has their PS3 set-up properly, because 1943 on my PS3 does NOT have these washed out colors you’re showing. This site has an obvious case of not turning on Full RGB, it’s obviously still on limited. When you are going through HDMI Full RGB should be set to “ON” not limited. 360 has the setting on by default, so for fair comparisons it should be “on” on PS3 as well. It seriously makes a HUGE difference in both color and texture quality in ALL games. If you don’t believe me, look at this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HvdRfUmoqQ
It clearly shows how HUGE the difference is even on an older game like Assassin’s Creed when you turn on Full RGB. It totally looks like a different gen game. Like the difference between a PC and console port. HUGE. Not only do colors look WAY better, but textures ALSO look WAY better.

Until this site (and gametrailers) turns on Full RGB on PS3, they are doing nothing but spreading dis-information to the consumer.

Well, look, I apprieciate you saying that, but since I can’t see your PS3 for myself for confirmation I just can’t buy it 100%. Not when your colors look SO washed out compared to what I see when I play (not only in this, but especially in your Ghostbuster comparison where it doesn’t even look like your playing the same game as me. Hell, that even looked bad compared to the Gametrailer comparison which showed the games looking nearly identical beside for some colors). And your blacks look so grey, and your colors seem to bleed into each other as opposed the color seperation I see on 1943. It seems especially obvious in those wood and the ground textures, which seem to have no deffinition in your PS3 pics, and bland color, while that same area when I play looks just like the wood in your 360 pics. Though saturation is lower. But it’s just your blacks look so bad, that the textures don’t pop, like they do on mine, and in your 360 pics. It seems like a telltale sign of limited RGB, so I hope you understand why I don’t buy you telling me it’s set to on.

Now, I’d like to know something else. How are you even capturing this (or any of these games you compare) on 360 in 720p? I don’t understand how you are stopping your 360 from automatically upscalling to whichever your screens highest resolution is, which in a 720p set would be 1080i? My 360 NEVER plays in 720p, it’s always in 1080i (my highest resolution), or 1080p on my friends TV. 360 upscales everything, how are you getting it to stop at 720p? I’d love to know since I’d rather my 360 stay in 720p when I use it.

Thanks for the post. Please check out our About Us section as it has more details and diagrams to answer your questions.

As for the Xbox 360 720p setting. Simply set 720p as the output in the display properties and it will force an output at the resolution. We do all of our captures at this resolution, so if the system was trying to output a 1080i/p signal our capture card would display black (as it is expecting a 720p signal.)

          Hope this clears things up.

          @Larryl

Obviously you are looking for justification that the PS3 version was worth you money, and the short answer is yes. But the fact is the PS3 version does look like what you are witnessing here unless you change you TV video settings. I have both version of 1943 and compared them for myself, and again got the same color and texture results LOT did. Now I know LOT captures all their feed directly from source video so adjusting TV saturation and such settings don’t come into play with their Head2Heads. But I’m sure if you played around enough with you TV settings I’m confident you could achieve the same color display as the Xbox 360. Now that being said the missing normal map and half texture quality is something you have no control over no matter how much you play with your TV settings. If you read the article they never mention anything about color differences just the facts about texture rez. So I recommend you buy the Xbox 360 version (if you have an Xbox) and compare them for yourself, and then you might find the answer your looking for.

I guess maybe the short development time forced the PS3 port to be rushed. What are your thoughts LOT? You’ve seen DICE’s work as well, any suggestions?

What I want to know is this. How do you manage to get exactly the same image in a multiplayer game on both consoles with everything nigh on 100% perfect in agle and everthing else? You either took a bloody long time setting each and every screenshot up or you used the same console for both images with a slight movement between the two to make it look like they are different and then doctored the pictures to make one look better than the other. I own the PS3 version and my son owns the Xbox 360 version and looking at them both I can’t see any of the problems you suggest here. In fact they look pretty much the same……and as for the washy brightness problems you have in some of your clips….how about turning the brightness down ffs.

For all of those who’re making up ridiculous accusations about using the same system, or intentionally setting the settings down, get over it. This game is nicer LOOKING on the 360.

It’s still the same game, however. It doesn’t matter. Buck it up, be a man, and move on. No one’s going to try to argue that Uncharted 2 looks better on the 360, because it’s just not the truth. So stop arguing for something that’s not true.

    Caid.

360 will win most multiplats for quite awhile. I’m a dev and it’s easier to harness power from it.

But when you write decent code for the SPU’S, the ps3 has quite a bandwidth and shader advantage.

Most devs don’t use this, because most time was spent just getting the versions near parity. I’m guessing the shadow is a big here, or something they didn’t finish on the PS3 version.

Ultrashadow 3 tech on the PS3 is fine for quite an amount of shadowing.

Most devs teams that have really started to push in the PS3 area, have noticed that there is so much shader,cpu/gpu time to be gained and streaming from blu-ray is only just getting started. I’d have to say, Crysis more or less full up would be possible on the PS3, slightly less fx on 360.

You guys are always on the ball with these things, giving us what we want. Nice comparison, would’ve wished that in this day of age ps3 and 360 would be the same, considering the ps3 has more under the hood, but you can blame laziness on the developers for this.

At the same time, for almost double the price for the ps3 you could say “why not at 512 ram instead of 256 Sony”.

Either way, I think this game is a must buy for either console, especially if your a 1942 lover. I bought it for ps3, but am going to also grab it for pc when and if it comes out.

I know I see one Lens of Truth Staff always in game on ps3, but I’m not gonna say who;)

Awesome job guys, oh and to the ppl posting, I think instead of criticizing on how they did their work is really no ur place considering all money is out of pocket and its free, unlike IGN which charges and doesn’t even do a good job.

As for the whole Crysis talk, yes it would be more capable on the PS3 when it comes to Physics, shadows and lighting, but the 360 has a stronger V card, which gives it an advantage for shaders and most of the time for textures (Vram).
    From my knowledge.

What I like about the ps3 is that its best friend is the CPU:)

I have both and other then the missing shadows on the balloons, they look the same.

But you guys have to remember, ati cards have never rendered at the correct colours, hence the slight red in every 360 game.

    This site lies!

They have not used HDMI for every comparison, they only started using it on prototype which is only a month or 2 old!
Shadows are missing from the xbox version of prototype all over the ground but they call it a draw!

Untill they re-do all the previous games in HDMI then these are NOT proper comparisons!

I am not saying ps3 would win, but the games look nothing like the low contrast washed out images published on here!

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    • Corey Corey says:

Unfortunately that is not a feasible option and wouldn’t change any of our outcomes. Every Head2Head prior to Prototype was done on equal terms – 720p component. We are aware that the PS3 cannot reproduce the color range (over component) that the Xbox 360 can without the developers fine tuning their rendering code. So, we don’t dock points off the PS3 for this issue. We do however dock points for textures being lower (half) resolution, which is something an HDMI cable simply cannot fix.

Just to emphasize that it is possible for colors to match between platforms over component, here are a few Head2Head’s that demonstrate that fact:

      Dead Space
      Fight Night Round 4
      UFC 2009
      Soul Calibur IV
      Street Fighter IV
      X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Also, Prototype was a tie. If you want better shadows with some frame rate issues buy the PS3 version. Or if you want blocky shadows with a consistent frame rate and less tearing buy the Xbox 360 version. Everything else was the same.

Also see our About Us section for more technical information as to why colors vary on different displays.

So if it was over HDMI it would have better colours and would be sharper!

How can you give an accurate head to head when the PS3 is at a disadvantage?

As all PS3 owners will justify, the screens I see on here (pre- prototype mainly)look washed out, blurry and with poor contrast. As much as you say it doesn’t affect your judgement, it is hard to belive you as how do you know the issue isn’t there on HDMI therefor giving incorrect info, and if you do know it isn’t there then you are showing incorrect images and anyone visiting the site looking for a console would clearly go for 360 as it looks better in your screens!

So all in all this is not “the lens of TRUTH”!
It is “The differences between ps3 and 360 using component”
With small print of “ps3 will look sharper, clearer, better more vibrant colours, HD sound and better contrast when used with HDMI”

This is NOT what we see at home

There are a few things you are failing to recognize. First, the images you are seeing on your monitor will not match what you see on your TV. Second, all of our Head2Head’s have been done on equal ground whether it be component or HDMI. And third, even over HDMI color will vary from game to game unless the developer spends the time to color correct the ported version.

Liqu1d, what does hurricane Katrina have to do with anything.. Kill Zone was as nice looking game no doubt, but to call it the reigning graphics champion is a stretch. The game had very nice lighting and just enough post effects to blur out the crappy low resolution textures on everything. Resident evil looked much nicer, hell lost planet, arguably gears 2, the environments in assasin’s creed, mass effect, force unleashed, kingdom under fire 2, all are on par or better than killzone, and at least the characters in those games look human. also if they were to port the game to the 360 they could make it look better, because as any developer will tell you its just a better console.

Anyone who knows anything knows that Killzone 2 has the best graphics of any console and they are only getting better!
Devs are only just begining to stream from blu-ray and make use of SPE’s.

Uncharted , GOW3, HeavyRain and GT5 will blow the competition further away.

Remember 360 uses PC code and devs have programmed them for years.
PS3 is 3 years old, a pain to program for but has caught and arguably surpassed 360 already without using a lot of power and tricks/shortcuts that they will find!

360 have superior GPU (ATI custom chip with 10 eDRAM with FSAA and huge bandwidth). CPU is not everything. You FAIL, sorry sir

I played through the last half of Killzone 2 and I think its graphics were mediocre. It had its moments but I think even drakes fortune looked better than that overhyped short game where all the people look like mutants. GOW3 looks really fun, but pretty bad graphically, heavy rain looks really nice for a game that is almost entirely an in-game cinematic. And as you can see from this site pretty much all multiplatform games look better on the 360. Any game that looks good on the ps3 could be ported and look better on the 360. listen to the developers the ps3 isn’t as powerful and its hard to program for.

What is up with all the folks complaining when a 360 version of a game wins a head-to-head? This is a good thing to know which is better, and to know how it’s better and by how much of a margin.

I own both systems. Most of my purchase decisions for cross-platform titles have come down to online or not in the past. If it was online it was 360 hands-down. Single player only went to the PS3. It was a PS3-owning friend that sent me to this site to begin with, and I love the head-to-heads. They offer just enough information to make an informed decision about which version to get. They never slam one system or another. They break it down, tell you were the differences are, let you how significant they think the differences weigh on the entire game and more.

Forget the whiners, Lens of Truth. Just keep up the good work.

How much fanboys are going to exist in this world, this is a site only for “no fanboy” for people that has both consoles and need help to choose the better version to buy a game, because fanaticism is a mental illness that blinds they and close their mind that’s why they are very very stubborn. always they are in opposition to that one who does not think as him though it is true or no.

many games like PES 2009 (best control), prototype (best shadows texture) and SFIV (best control) are better on PS3 many others like resident 5 (best textures, more objects in screen and best constant framerate), Marvel Ultimate Alliance (best framerate and more effects), Ghostbusters (best resolution, best textures, and best framerate) without mentioning the deep colors of any games like Pure and RE5 in PS3 that are not possible of being equal to the 360 version even you adjust the color TV settings to max, and switch the superwhite on and the rgb option: full.
