Lens of Truth’s defense against “Head2Head: Ghostbuster” Allegations

icon1 Drew | icon2 News | icon4 June 16, 2009 |

UPDATE: Comments on the recent Game Trailers comparison video can be found below.

There’s been a lot of hype on the N4G News postings/comments section with various allegations against Lens of Truth’s methods and credibility.  We take pride in our work and constantly strive to be the unbiased news site that you, as a video game consumer, come to in order to answer the one basic question we all ask ourselves whenever a new multi-platform game is released: “Which of these games is worth my $60?”.  With that being said, we’d like the opportunity to address some of the various claims against the Head2Head we performed on the new Ghostbusters game.

CLAIM: “This post on Polycount from Terminal Reality’s lead character artist explains why there was so drastic difference between the PS3 and 360 versions texture quality.  Lens of Truth made the comparison using the pre-release copy of the game which had texture quality lowered.”
http://n4g.com/News-347268.aspx

RESPONSE:
We were fortunate enough to be sponsored by Play N Trade for this particular Head2Head and were able to snag their customer demo copy of the game before the release date.  This does not, however, mean that we used a “pre-release copy” or some other beta of the PS3 version of the game.  The version we used is the same retail version that is being sold in stores.

Furthermore, we’re not sure it’s fair to accept a forum post as authoritative evidence on any matter, regardless of what forum it is and whose name is in the signature.

CLAIM: “MS paid them to do that because Ghostbusters is one of the biggest games of the decade and a huge threat for the 360’s succes[sic]. ”
http://n4g.com/News-347268.aspx

RESPONSE: The “Lens of Truth” website is an independent site, primarily funded by a group of game developers/enthusiasts and generous donations from our fans.  Aside from user-submitted content, our site is built during our SPARE time.  While it would be a glorious (and blasphemous) event if Microsoft paid us to skew our Head2Head, the truth is best stated by another N4G commentor:

“LoT is not that big of a website, not that well known. It is more something like the HHG site. Why would MS waste money on that?”

CLAIM: “…as a lot of the time on these comparisons, they don’t look like what they do on my TV.” Some have even claimed that it’s our AV setup that leads us to draw “faulty conclusions”.  We’ve been accused of skewing our TV settings or in-game video settings in order to make one system look superior over another.

RESPONSE: Take a look at a diagram of our capturing setup:

lot_capture_flowchart.jpg

All of our Head2Head captures are done via component cables @ 720p. The reason that our comparisons are done with component video is because of the PlayStation 3’s HDCP on the HDMI output. HDCP is a form of digital copy protection which makes it impossible to capture with our hardware. In order to neutralize the possible processing effect that various TVs could have, we place the capture device between the gaming systems and the TV.  The only settings that could affect the quality of the video are the in-game video settings, which are always left as default.

Additionally, several other sites have come to the same conclusions that we have:

http://www.gamezine.co.uk/news/ghostbusters-ps3-960-by-540-360-720p-$1304198.htm
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/06/ghostbusters-graphically-youll-want-to-stick-with-the-360.ars

Even IGN mentions that the PS3 “graphics seem to be a touch dumbed down…” (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/992/992699p3.html)

UPDATE:  Game Trailers just recently uploaded their comparison video of Ghostbusters. While we feel the video is good for showing the overall feel of Ghostbusters on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, they failed at focusing on the issues between the two versions.  It should also be noted that the video that Game Trailers is displaying on their site is sub 720p (960×540) whereas our video is full 720p (1280×720).   To show that we’ve achieved the same quality of capture on the PlayStation 3, we’ve taken two shots from their video that match up with our footage.  Note that our images had to be sized down to match the resolution of the Game Trailers images.   Also note that these images are pulled directly from the high quality download versions on both sites (Game Trailers = Quicktime, Lens of Truth = H.264 AVI).

In conclusion, our goal is not to mislead gamers.  Every member of our staff is a gamer too, and we believe that every gamer has a right to know which console sponsors a better finished product.  Every aspect of our site is designed in such a way so as to compare two very different systems in a completely unbiased way.  If you feel we’ve made a mistake, please let us know.  We have no problem with admitting when a mistake has been made.  With that being said, after several re-verifications, we firmly stand behind the conclusions previously published in our Ghostbusters Head2Head.

We hope this addresses some of the various concerns regarding our Ghostbusters Head2Head and the quality of our work in general.

As I’ve been telling you guys over and over again keep up the good work. There aren’t many honest sites to be found like yours. I’m glad to be part of this community.

As i’ve also mentioned Sony should not have allowed a game to be published in this state and consumers should not be mislead believing this game is being run on 720. I think this is the lowest resolution on PS3 game to date.

Sony didn’t publish the North American release, Atari did. They’re only shown bits of the product during development and do not have the benefit of comparing side-by-side to an Xbox 360 version before release date. SCE is publishing the exclusive European release.

See, this what happens when ps3 fanboys hear their precious console is not out preforming the 360. They will get hostile and will make bogus claims such as is getting paid by M$ or they are pro-xbox. I’ve seen the live comparison and known without a doubt that you guys aren’t lying.

Remember when the exclusive Haze? PS3 fanboys had to vigorously promote the shit of that game and made those EXACT SAME CLAIMS to those who gave it a bad review saying “they were paid by and/or made by M$”.

I can really respect a site who responds this maturely to the user’s responses. Honestly, I can say I am technically what one would call a ps3 fanboy. But I do believe your comparison. I have absolutely no reason not to. The real focus of this issue should not be your site, but the devs. I’m sorry to say, but the focus the devs put specifically on the ps3 version of this title * which I think had to do more with Phil Harris * is what makes this comparison tragic. I disagree with Gametrailer’s comparison videos because not only have I had my own completely different experiences with the games they compare, but I believe we all know about their famous mistakes. I respect you guys for what you do. Now, the main goal you need to do is focus the attention away from your site to the devs. Good luck

Dude shut the hell up…this is not about trying to upstage the 360, this is about false claims from a developer that touted that the PS3 version will be amazing and that they where thrilled to work with the hardware and knew how to tap into it when after all this time it was a blatant lie…everyone knows by know what the PS3 can do, so I’m not even gonna justify that with game examples…what is the kick in the balls is that this is a Sony pictures production movie/game and they actually let this game go thru Q&A looking like this, its not that its horrific, but come on….don’t LIE TO THE PUBLIC!

So get a get a clue dumbass, not everyone is thinking MS has something to do with it.

Well, since Gametrailers only gives you a 540p movie, how could you see a difference in resolution? That would mean that they leveled the playing field, in the resolution aspect.

Do you think that this site just made up those pictures and their video?

I’m sure that the game looks fine on the PS3. That doesn’t change the fact that its lowere resolution, is missing effects, and has lower res textures than the 360 version. This happens over and over, yet people always cry fowl.

I only have a ps3 but that doesn’t mean I am not frustrated with the quality of some multi platform games compared to the 360. That is not to say that I always check (when I have the chance) the games myself before buying them but most of the time your head-to-heads give a good indication of their quality.

I think you do your job unbiased. For me the fact that little differences, in how both machines handle textures and aliasing for example, are generally neglected in your conclusion, speeks for itself. Generally, the distinction between little nitpicks and game-changing differences is made well!

I’m not saying the PS3 is the beall and endall of gaming. But to release a sub standard game is poor.

I’ve seen the game on 360 and although it looks better then PS3, i don’t think compared to other games it looks that good and nothing that the ps3 shouldn’t be able to handle easily at 720p.

People shouldn’t shoot the messenger. We just showed the differences in the game from console to console. Sometimes people like what we do, sometimes people hate what we do, and sometimes people ignore what we do. Even if we didn’t have this website we’d be doing this stuff anyway. We love games, plain and simple. We’re not out to destroy a company or a console. We just don’t want people to pay full price for a game when they could have spent the same money on the same game and NOT get the better version. It’s happened to us, and we don’t want it to happen to you.
And of course we’re not being paid off by anyone. No one’s approached us with a deal, or a suitcase with money. Trust us, this is America. If someone wants to buy us off, I’ll give them my bank account info! As it is, my lawn proves that I’m not being paid off. I can take pictures if necessary, but I assure you, I have to cut it myself. If Sony wants to cut my lawn, maybe they could win the next head2head, but otherwise we’ll stay unbiased like always.

Yeah. Just wow. I must admit that I was somewhat doubtful of LoT’s comparisons at first, as I didn’t believe any company would let their game out of the gate with such noticeable, sub-par resolution issues. However, got the game, checked it myself, and it’s absolutely true. The ps3 version is blurred to hell and runs in 540p native. What a shame. However, thanks to Lens Of Truth for doing this kind of comparison and standing their ground when a ton of people were tossing insults and doubts at them like stones.

On polycount (dev’s website), some of the dev’s are commenting on the issue and sounding rather nonchalant about the whole thing, so hopes for a ps3 patch are probably pretty low. For example:

    http://boards.polycount.net/showpost.php?p=958184&postcount=70

They also confirm somewhere in the same thread that the native resolution of the game is 540p.

I think the problem lies in where the blame lies, and if it is really THAT much of a difference. As you will see on the Ars Technica link, they REALLY wanted this comparison to be the retail version. You’re seeing 360 fanboys all over N4G trying to wage a war on this game as a means to say “this is proof that multiplat games run better on the 360″. In other words, they don’t think TR is to blame, but rather the PS3 hardware.

Plus, I wouldn’t give AT the hits if I were you. I’ve noticed they got a HELL of a lot of 360 fanboys running that site, and they argued up and down that TR isn’t to blame at ALL, and it’s ALL about the PS3 hardware (see the comment section of that article that I, for some reason, had to wait FOREVER to have a comment of mine posted on just to have it not post at all. You will see that the author never faults TR and is ready to slam any fault he can find about the PS3 while the 360 never gets slammed for anything). The author of that article has done so in the past ( http://www.gamegazette.net/?p=9 ).

In a way, it is the PS3’s fault.

I don’t think it’s controversial or fangirlish of me to say that the PS3 is harder to program for than the 360. Clearly the hardware is powerful enough – exclusive/1st party PS3 games look as good or better than 360 exclusives. It makes sense to me that PS3 versions of multiplatform games tend to get screwed over, since the devs have the same amount of time to work on both versions, and it’s easier to extract performance out of the 360.

Someone needs to explain to the spokesperson for Terminal Reality that the PS3 version is actually 56% the resolution of the 360 version, not 75%. You need to count the horizontal resolution as well, not just the vertical.

Also the PS3 has the same amount of memory as the 360 (though it’s used differently).

All in all though TC shouldn’t be complimenting themselves for “managed to squeeze 3 out of 4 textures as full size on the PS3.” when technically it’s abount 2 out of 4 and highly filtered.

I’m really surprised Sony let them release the game in that state. Unless that’s the reason for the timed exclusive outside of the U.S. Either way it shines a bad light on TC and Sony.

I agree, the problem was not with the PS3 hardware it’s the developers not understanding how to program on the PS3.

It’s unfortunate that you cannot capture video through HDMI. There is a huge difference on the PS3 between how it handles component and HDMI output. It is like Sony never intended to have games look proper through component. Opposed to 360 which only had component as an HD option for the longest time.

This is the reason that in all your head2heads the PS3 looks washed out. Using HDMI gives you much more range in darks and lights and more vibrant colour.

    • Ruth Ruth says:

      Yes. This is certainly true.

However, it still doesn’t change the fact that the ps3 version runs at 56% the resolution of the 360 version with reduced res textures.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    • Incendious Incendious says:

Exactly. The PS3 update years ago improved the HDMI output with Full RGB support (no washed-out look). There’s no equivalent component Full RGB setting to adjust. Too bad no ones figured out how to record through HDMI because of HDCP, which is why many are reporting better results on the PS3 than what Lens of Truth is reporting, because most PS3 owners use HDMI cables, and many know how to adjust it to Full RGB for a better picture. Oh well, maybe someday we’ll get better comparisons but we’ll have to settle for these at least for now. You all should add a disclaimer in that, “results may vary for those using HDMI”.

Regardless Terminal Reality screwed the PS3 version by lowering its native resolution. There’s no excuse for that one.

Fair enough. Although my last statement indicated I was aware of the texture issues both Lens of Truth and EuroGamer concluded. The blame is squarely in the hands of Terminal Reality using low res textures for the PS3 version. That’s a given.

I was merely pointing out that HDMI with Full RGB will improve the PS3 gamma quality, especially the washed out look both comparison images show. It won’t add more detail of course, but it’ll look slightly better than your comparisons. HDMI Full RGB isn’t a default setting because many of the older HDTVs do not support it. It’s a fact however that you’ll get the best picture quality from using that setting along with HDMI cables for the PS3. Unfortunately, all comparison videos and screenshots ignore this fact in favor of using defaults and component cables which prevent the use of this video setting. Eurogamer uses HDMI but uses the default HDMI Limited RGB Range setting.

It’s too bad we can’t get the best comparisons possible when making these videos/screenshots. It just further reinforces the false perception that one console has superior graphics quality over another when in some cases they’re equal.

It may sound like I’m whining, but my wish is just for a fair comparison or none at all. The unfair comparisons just fuel more console flame wars.

I think Lens of Truth does a good equal job with their comparisons, however, being in the broadcast industry, I have a slight problem with their capture method mentioned above.

Component cables are not a good consistent way to capture anything because they are “lossy.” I can tell you from experience, that component signal quality depends a lot on the quality of the cables, length of cables, and output source machine. Slight variations can cause lots of anomalies in the picture. For example, one beta machine can play back a tape perfectly clear, and the same tape will play out another machine slightly less clear, or will have luma/chroma differences because of cables are lossy.

Because of this problem, most video is captured nowadays SDI (Serial Digital Interface – Lossless). HDMI is another form of Lossless transfer and is the best connection in consumer products nowadays. So, component is not a consistent, true way to judge any video in a digital world (computer generated images).

I own Ghostbusters on ps3 (I’m not a fanboy by any means), and it is crystal sharp through a HDMI connection. The gamma and contrast look great as well. It doesn’t look anything like these muddied/soft pictures on the website. These pictures look to me like a lossy component connection honestly.

Texture wise I admit, the ps3 version is weaker than the 360. But the soft/blurry stuff is not really there through a HDMI connection.

I understand that they are unable to capture through HDMI on the ps3 because of the copy protection. So maybe they should consider just trying a visual judgement/opinion through the HDMI to assist their critiques.

Thanks for the comment. As you mentioned we are unable to capture through HDMI due to HDCP, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. If you haven’t yet, you might want to check this guys comparison out and read his article:

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/xbox-360-vs-ps3-face-off-round-20.

We understand that the clarity might have improved over HDMI, but in my opinion not by much. Since the native resolution of the PS3 version was confirmed to be 960×540. That’s less then 720p. After we received the criticism, I did go out and rent the PS3 version just to triple check the texture and resolution issues we found. I hooked ht PS3 up to my TV via HDMI and set the RGB Full Range to full and super white to on. I found that although it did appear a littler clear it was pretty close to the pictures. I figure being in broadcasting you probably have an awesome TV and maybe that’s helping the game look at little better too. Unfortunately, the systems never reach a TV for the capture. (As shown in the diagram above). Also keep in mind, if we hook the PS3 and Xbox 360 up through HDMI you’ll probably get the same results. The PS3 would still look blurred while compared to the Xbox 360, since its resolution is 56% of the Xbox 360’s.

    Again thanks for the comment.

I really think Sony should make Terminal Reality patch this game to make it look at least as good as the 360 version, since it doesn’t look like a patch is going to come unless it is forced on them by Sony.

I agree! It’s been done before so there’s really no excuse why they shouldn’t. Although, it’ll be a pretty big patch :)

Thank you for doing these extensive comparisons! I don’t see how any gamer can complain about information regarding version differences. Unfortunately, the PS3 is clearly not most developers’ priority.

PS3 has better all round performance through HDMI, 360 is exactly the same through component as HDMI, therefore PS3 IS at a disadvantage and thats why it looks worse than on a HDTV through HDMI!

You say you can’t do HDMI capture? So tell me how you did it with Prototype? And isn’t it funny how the issues of “blurriness, contrast and colour” are gone and it arguably looks better or exactly the same as 360!

Still think Ghostbusters is better on 360, but as with all games reviewed with component on here, nowhere near as bad!

PS3’s optimal performance and the output it was designed for is HDMI, if you aren’t using it how can you give an accurate comparison?
    Answer: YOU CAN’T!

You obviously favour 360 or you would make it clear in every review that PS3 IS NOT displaying optimal picture settings!
