| Head2Head – Ghostbusters
Length: 00:06:24 Which version of Ghostbusters gets a face full of Ectoplasmic slime, and which one comes out with the clean victory? |
||
Welcome back for another exciting Head2Head battle! This week at the Lens of Truth we had an amazing opportunity to play the much anticipated Ghostbusters: The Video Game almost a week before the release date. This exclusive was made possible by our folks at Play N Trade (Oviedo, FL) who, once again, let us borrow their store preview copies for this Head2Head. We thank Play N Trade for making this possible, we really appreciate it. If you’re planning on buying this game then you’re gonna want to stick around for this one! The differences will blow your mind, as it did for us and the other 100+ viewers who watched us compare it live last Friday on Justin.tv. Let’s just say that it looked like one game got slimed with 50% less texture quality!
Graphically this was a very impressive game, if you’re playing the Xbox 360 version that is. To start, they both had noticeable screen tearing and both games seem to be in the same ball park with aliasing issues, but that’s were the similarities stopped. The big issue was in the texture quality, and let me tell you it was a huge difference! The texture quality for the PlayStation 3 left us shaking our heads in disbelief. This went beyond the traditional consoles rendering textures differently, as we’ve seen in other Head2Heads, the PlayStation 3 seemed to have ½ the texture quality of the Xbox 360 and in other areas, even less. This was present on all the PlayStation 3 textures, normal maps, spec maps, light maps, etc. even the dynamic shadow maps looked blocky and half the quality of the Xbox 360. To add insult to injury, the PlayStation 3 also had some serious compression happening on their texture maps resulting in banding and blockiness that couldn’t be ignored. One other issue that must be noted on the PlayStation 3 version is the actual game resolution. This is by far the blurriest “720p” game we have seen to date. If we had to guess, Ghostbusters on the PlayStation 3 is running at sub 720p.
We also noticed some effects were missing in the PlayStation 3 version, for example in the game when you fired your proton beam at the environment a burn mark would cover the surface in this black charred texture decal. The Xbox 360 had an extra layer of texture creating a burnt ember effect that looked really cool, especially in dark areas. Whelp, the PlayStation 3 didn’t have it. However, we feel it’s important to mention the texture glitch we found during our capture. At one point during the capture we ended up in an elevator right after a cut scene. As we transitioned from the cut scene to the game the Xbox 360 had some really low res textures displaying. In fact, the texture quality looked almost identical to the PS3’s textures, (without the compression) but as soon as we moved the camera the textures popped in. Now before you get all giddy we also did the same thing for the PS3 and of course it didn’t fix their texture issues. Nonetheless, even with the glitch that only seemed to happen in one area on the Xbox 360 , the Xbox 360 surpassed the PlayStation 3 without a question.
Both games seemed to perform the same in terms of loading, but we had to give the win to the Xbox 360 because of the mandatory install the PlayStation 3 had. Personally, I hate mandatory installs, and I hate it even more when it doesn’t help a game look, play or load faster. The install was approximately 3.9 gigs and took roughly 8 minutes to install.

I was really disappointed in the outcome of this Head2Head. There is no reason that the PlayStation 3 version should have looked this bad. I love my PlayStation 3 and so does the rest of the guys at the Lens of Truth. We’re really baffled by what happened here because I, like many others, were under the impression the game was developed on the PlayStation 3. Why were we under this impression? Because of this little interview that VG247 had with the president of Terminal Reality, Mark Randel. Here is a snippet:
MR : Personally, I want to show off our PS3 technology. We’re one of the few developers who love the PS3 and have a great time with it. We have great technology for the PS3 and we want to show it off.
VG247: Isn’t it the same for the 360?
MR: We’re running the same game for both platforms but if we made a PS3-only game, for example, you could double the amount of objects on screen that you’re seeing. The PlayStation 3 has seven processors and the 360 only has three, so seven versus three means you can do a lot more on the PS3. We’re keeping the game the same over both platforms so we don’t want to take out any features.
VG247: So is the game scaled down because of the limitations of the 360?
MR : For example, we’ve reserved one whole processor on the PS3 for Dolby Digital 5.1 sound whereas on the 360 you have part of one processor to do that. So we can have a lot better sound mixing and a lot more effects going on at the same time. That kinds of makes us do a little bit less in the game [360] but makes for better audio. If we’re doing a PS3 only game however, we could be doing a lot more. We could be pushing a lot more on the screen.
So what happened? For pete’s sake, Sony owns Paramount! Like I said a million times before, Sony needs to step up to these developers. How does EA do it? Fight Night Round 4 was almost identical and there’s no reason why GhostBusters couldn’t have been. Whatever the case, I liked to think we did a good deed playing the game almost a week before the release date. At least I know I would be pissed if I dropped $60 on the PlayStation 3 version and not the Xbox 360. Now if you only own a PlayStation 3 then don’t read this article because it’s still a good game and you’ll have fun with it regardless; but for those who own both systems the winning choice is obvious.

PlayStation 3 loses by half, literally. The PlayStation 3’s textures were half the resolution as the Xbox 360. Also, PlayStation 3 was quite blurry and seemed to be running sub 720p. Also, lets not forget the missing ember effects and lower resolution dynamic shadow maps. |

Xbox 360 wins this by a landslide. If we didn’t know any better we would have thought the Ghostbusters was developed on the Xbox 360 and ported, poorly, to the PlayStation 3. However all sources indicate the PS3 was the lead, and so you’ve got an issue on your hands. Either someone is lying, or the porting team does better work then the lead team. Don’t believe the lies, buy this game on the Xbox 360. | ![]() |

if you want to play multiplayer then you had best buy the PS3 version as the PC version has absolutely no online support or features.
As for graphics i imagine it will be similar to the Xbox360 version. . . hopefully

Sorry, I’m jumping to the top here and don’t have anything to say about Joel’s PC version comment;
Does anyone notice that despite these difference, both the PS3 version and the Xbox360 version are getting the same reviews?
If these comparisons are 99.99% legit, then SOMEONE is getting paid off to alter their review! And I don’t think it’s M$ with the deep pockets this time around.

Being from the UK, I really appreciate this comparison guys. I had heard about the missing embers on PS3 from the IGN review but the overall difference here is shocking!
I shall be importing on the 360! I’m really glad this game’s region free!

Having played both versions, it’s clear to me, this article is a total crock. Seems microsoft are trying to do as much damage repair as they can due to the PS3 Euro exclusivity, and the first part is paying blogs to post FUD like this.
Worse still are the people that actually believe this crap. It’s unlikely this comment will make it past the enforced moderation, for very good reason, as the reviewers also know what a sham this comparison is. What ever happened to journalistic integrity?

To be honest i am a fan of both systems and 98% of the time i agree with the comparisons made here however on this one i have to call shananagins if you watch the HD IGN videos none are as blurry as the samples that have been provided.. The textures appear to be just as sharp.. The only thing that seems to stand correct is the missing embers on the wall burns. Here is the video if anyone cares to follow it.. I really love what you guys do but in this case 2+2 isn’t equal to 4

Here is the deal. We were so afraid that we made a mistake that we got the good guys at Play N Trade to let us borrow the games again. We checked and double checked. What you see is what we saw. Believe it or not it is the truth. We even took a look at HDMI, though we can’t capture HDMI via the PS3. It was a little sharper, but no where near as crisp as the Xbox 360.

Guys hes right I just got the game it is labeled it as 1080p. Otherwise watching this head2head with you live and purchasing the game on the PS3 (won’t take the risk on blowing up my PC at the moment and DRM is a bitch) I’m completely dissapointed with the graphics. Gameplaywise though its helluva lot of fun and at least thats not differing from both systems.
Like you said if the PS3 was the lead which i remember hearing from a long time ago, then theres something wrong.
Although you know what you guys could do? Import the Sony published version from Europe…maybe there could be difference? Atari published the US version for both PS3 and 360.

HDMI crushes textures on the PS3. Play the game through component for a noticeable difference.
It still wont match up with the 360 ver but it wont be too far off from it at the least.

Actually from what i know about LOT both of the systems are captured through 720p component cables since the PS3 will not let you capture through HDMI because of copy protection.

I find this very strange considering that the developers stated in the past they wanted this to be a PS3 exclusive (at least that what I read a while ago on N4G) and also considering this is a Sony pictures production, I’m even more surprised at this level of detail, I hope this is not true and just a shot of a earlier build or something.

It’s very funny that as soon as I read the title I knew that this would be in favor of the 360. Give it up! I have both systems and exclusives on the ps3 make the 360 exclusives look like crap. ps3 graphically kills the 360. It’s fan boy articles like this that kill the gaming industry.

Sorry for the mistake, but we just verified that the PS3 version does upscale to 1080p but the fact remains that even through HDMI the PS3 textures still look dull and washed out. Now, with that said everyone needs to remember that lensoftruth.com has nothing to hide, we are not members of, or paid by, any organization or business involved with the products and gaming equipment, hardware, or software that we critique and review. We all pay for this website out of pocket and sometimes a much appreciated donation comes our way. Honestly, we’re just a bunch of gamers doing what we love, and we would never intentionally compromise any video or images that we have captured or utilize. Occasionally we do make mistakes, and if so, we will quickly admit to it, address it and attempt to fix it.
You all have the right to disagree with us but in the end, lensoftruth.com believes, the truth will prevail. We are only trying to inform people of our observations and point of view. This information may save you the aggravation of being persuaded into buying an inferior version after major websites release copy and paste reviews. These reviews habitually insinuate that there isn’t a difference, but our personal experiences, we feel, have proven them wrong-there is always some difference. Very minor ones usually result in a tie, but a major difference of this magnitude begs to be exposed and addresses-how else will the consumer get the best we deserve? Thank you all for your comments and please keep them clean and professional.
You’re going to have to post a correction, might as well do it now. Terminal Reality’s lead character artist has stated that you “were playing a pre-release version that had lowered textures.”

RGB and super white only affect HDMI, not component. And upscaling to 1080p (since the game isn’t native 1080p – or 720p for that matter) would make the textures more blurry – not less.

Think about it this way the xbox has better graphics maybe but it’s just small details and i figure due to how long it would take to use the full potential of the ps3 it would end up being delayed another year just for a few pixels and effects

These graphic issues have nothing to do with processing power. Sure stacked up side by side the PS3 is always going to win out over the Xbox 360 in pure computing prowess. But the graphic architecture on the 360 is far superior especially in texture memory and graphic processing speed. This is mainly due to more a more advanced GPU and like I said double the memory… like boarder2 on shacknews.com says
“The PS3 has a lot of computing power but lacks in texture memory. You can have lots of computational heavy shit going on at the same time, but it’s going to look kind of crappy unless it uses lots of low resolution textures in good ways. Ghostbusters clearly seems like it’s going to be reliant on textures because of its art direction.
Things like Ratchet and Clank use a lot of solid colored stuff which can be done with some super low textures or no textures at all, so it looks great.
Nothing new here, move along.”

@Jeff:
Sorry bro, but please don’t accuse the author of the article of being a fanboy. If anything, your post reeks of fanboy. But that’s beside the point.
Now I love my PS3 as much as anyone else, but even I realize that multi-platform games rarely actually look better on the PS3. Developers have to compromise when making multi-platform games. For all we know, this game could have looked a lot better as a PS3 exclusive (or a 360 exclusive for that matter). But multi-platform developers have to go with what works best for BOTH consoles. For example, something might work for the PS3 version to make that look better, but it might not be possible to do on the 360 version – and vice versa. So developers may have to sacrifice to get both versions looking equal.
First-party developers on the other hand have an advantage. They don’t have to find out what works for two different consoles. They can focus all of their attention onto the one system and do things that probably wouldn’t be possible to do with multi-platform games. That’s why we always see exclusives looking better than multi-platform games.
Atari (or whoever) really dropped the ball here. There’s no reason that PS3 version should look that much worse than the 360 version.
@Stewie
First of all, its already been said that this site is non-profit. Its not owned by Microsoft and these Head2Heads aren’t tainted in any way. I know you’re butthurt by the fact that the 360 version of a game may actually look better than the PS3 version, but its time to face the facts. I can’t believe people can actually have so much dislike for a console that they go around spewing out conspiracy theories. There’s a difference between being a “fan” and being a “fanboy.” Wanting your console of choice to do better than the other coneoles = Fan. Making up things just to make a console look bad = Fanboy. Learn the difference. Also, don’t bother replying to this. I don’t care for what you have to say.
Second of all, I’ve never actually seen the staff delete a comment on here, so I’m not sure about the “enforced moderation” comment. Heck, if anyone’s comment deserves to be deleted, its yours.
Now I’m done.

Well, I was just reading many posts on here that I don’t get… I was tuned in on Friday to see the Head-2-Head, and my guess is you were not. I have both systems and from time to time tune in on a Friday to see the show because I like to know I’m not wasting my money – clearly having both the Xbox360 and PS3, I value a place where you can watch a LIVE comparison. I’m able to log on while the game is being played- ask questions, and feel like I’m making an educated decision at the end of the night. Since you stated you would like to personally “call out” the comparison, I’m here to say I saw it with my 2 eyes. I’d like to call you out- And tell you if you don’t trust these guys (I’ve had no problems), tune in to a head-2-head and see for yourself. I am not sure what you mean by “back-tracking”. We are very up front with our captures. We do not capture via HDMI because of the PS3’s HDCP, super white is only for HDMI and we don’t film a tv. What you see is what we see.

First Post here. I stumbled upon your cast on Justin TV the other day and was glad someone was putting up some info on my favorite paranormal policemen’s new game.
I am shocked about the PS3 difference, it looks as though you’re looking through some “schmear”, as we call it in the film industry. The blur is just crazy and it stinks because I want it for the PS3 since I don’t use Live (I have a 360 too). My debate now is a stupid one that shouldn’t even be an issue: Graphics or online multiplayer.
If I were still in O-Town and not in NYC, I would probably be attempting to “weekend warrior” it on your crew haha! Keep up the coolness guys.

The 360 version is far better than the Ps3’s. I’m seriously starting to doubt about this mysterious mythical ps3 power.
Okay the ps3 exclusives look great, but who knows if they wouldn’t look the same or even better on 360, too? Ps3 has better 1st party devs, that’s just it.

k Honestly people are either ignorant, or can’t read.
1) both games are captured Via Component to make the comparison fair.
2) Since ps3 has HDMI protection that doesn’t allow capture at 1080p and 720p they can’t really do it can they?
3) Show up to the Live sessions, and stop whinnying about being biased.
4) Lens of truth isn’t the only that say the same thing, only difference is lens of truth is actually showing you the results to your face which you should appreciate.
Honestly the ignorance people bring to the table.
@fabrizio, mythical ps3 power has nothing to do with it, considering its power can double the i7 965 when compared, but for multiplatform games, developers usually find it easier to make the game on 360/PC (same architecture) then port it on to the ps3, which can result sin loss of quality or instability since the game is program for the other architecture, and the port isn’t always intact.
This game was a shocker just because it was developed “on the ps3 first”, but people are starting to doubt that
PS3 version runs at native 540p (960×540)
Xbox 360 version runs at native 720p (1280×720)
End case, the textures are 3/4 the 360s for this game, get over it.

I’m well aware that ps3’s hardware is superior to the 360’s, but what’s the point in having a stronger hardware and not taking advantage of it? Now, whose fault is it if games look worse on ps3? Sony’s, of course! It’s like I own a Ferrari, but I ever barely drive it. So, I don’t really care to have a super powerful expensive console if then I can have the same result and sometimes even better on the opposite party when it comes to V-I-D-E-O-G-A-M-E-S, cause that’s what I’m supposed to do with a console: play videogames ( mainly )and not stare at its beautiful barely exploited power. Why is it so hard to admit that Sony did it wrong? I don’t think that developers are all stupid to choose xbox 360 as a platform to develop their games on. If I want power, hell I have a wide choice of super computers out there. It’s been 3 years that ps3 fanboys keep repeating that Ps3 is gonna show its REAL strength that would make xbox 360 pale in front of it. bla bla bla talk is all well but.. we’re still waiting. better being practical here, don’t you think? And just to be clear, I don’t root for the xbox 360 nor for the ps3, cause I own both and have no problem to admit that Sony got more nad better first party games, while most of the multis look better on the 360, so I get them for this console, Ghostbusters included. plain and simple.

Ghostbusters: PS3 three-quarters resolution of 360 version
Well, that explains it! The PS3 version is confirmed to run at 960×540. Seriously, 480p is 720×480 so not much of an increase. We gladly accept apologies in the form of donations.

Doesn’t the PS3’s component output at 540p?
So is what’s being compared a native 720p picture to a digitally downscaled and then upscaled 720p picture?

Component does up to 720p.
The game’s textures are 540p.
So the images are stretched. Which results in crap imaging, kinda like 360s 720p to 1080p upscaling.

That’s not exactly what I’m saying. I know that ps3’s component does 720p, but I thought that the actual component output was 540p which is digitally upscaled to 720p (through component).
So if the native resolution is actually 720p, and downscaled to 540p, then upscaled again to 720p for the screenshots, that would explain them looking rather poor.

Actually a component cable can carry a signal up to 1080p, but the PS3 will only allow 1080i. 1080p is restricted to HDMI only on the PS3 (another form of copy protection).
L1qu1d is correct, anytime you upscale you are basically resizing the image on the fly to the new resolution.

I’d like to know whats going on in the minds of those who picked PS3 in the above head2head Poll.
I remember PS3’s Bioshock had the same vaseline on the lens blur effect vs. 360 version.
A shame really… knowing PS3 is capable of better.

I think this comparison alone is not enough.. Admittedly what is seen here clearly indicates the 360 version has superior graphics.
But this might not be true after we maximize the resolution for both systems. As far as I know, no other review(for example, IGN) pointed out this obvious difference if it existed. I don’t see why they won’t do that.
Can the lensoftruth staff do an eyeball comparison of both games at maximum resolution instead of using a capturer?
Such an article on your website might unnecessarily damage the reputation of a console. I think this is what most fans are concerned about.

The game is rendered at 540p and then upscaled for 1080p. 540p is the true ‘maximized’ resolution, and upscaling won’t magically make the textures better.

Does anyone actually have any confirmation of the game being rendered at 540p? Besides the forums which are basing their conclusion off of the screenshots from this site?

The beyond3d forum originally used our images to conclude the resolution of the PS3 version.

Well, I got the game yesterday, did some testing, and can also confirm the game is running at 540p. Wow.

the big question here is: What went wrong Terminal Reality?
Like or Dislike:

There is some suggestion that the PS3 version being played was a pre-release which contained half-resolution graphics.
http://boards.polycount.net/showthread.php?t=63647&page=2
Quote: “they were playing a pre-release version that had lowered textures.
That and the mip mapping doesn’t turn off at the same distance as the 360.”

While I don’t think you made it look worst on purpose since that would be low, but someone who works for terminal Reality has posted that the comparison used for the ps3 was a older pre release build what isn’t anywhere near the final release

unfortunately not, both Lens of Truth and Arstechnica made comparison tests with retail versions and the PS3 version is broken.
after all the praise TR made to their own PS3 technology, this comes out as a huge embarrasment for the company imo.
Does any website tryed to contact them for a clarification?

That’s a BS reply. As they mentioned earlier, they have to capture via component. That means they don’t have a dev kit, which will allow HDMI capture, and can’t run pre-release code.
Either a fake dev or someone who doesn’t want to own up to a crappy port.

apparently the huge difference is due to the “ps3’s pre-alpha” release that is obviously worse than the retail one.
Of course the Staff from this website can prove it wrong, but more and more websites are stating it and MIGHT be plausible.

Go to ArsTechnica and look for yourself. They posted a pic of both RETAIL boxes, along with their card.

I don’t think anyone realizes that these comparisons are fake. Because a guy who actually works at Terminal Velocity said this about lensoftruth’s article: http://boards.polycount.net/showpost.php?p=957580&postcount=33

I already pointed out how that can’t be the case. The lead artist should find a new excuse.

As I pointed out, they don’t have a debug PS3 so they couldn’t be playing pre-release code. The ‘lead artist’ should find a new excuse because that one doesn’t fly.

360 fanboy did this review, I have both 360 and ps3, love both systems in their own ways. The ps3 images are all much brighter than the 360 which will make it look like there’s no shadows for the ps3, stupid people do stupid comparisons. Make them both the same brightness then do the comparison. Idiots, plain and simple.

Today my friend and I bought Ghostbusters both for the XBOX 360 and the PS3 and decided to do our own test after reding this article. We used a new 32″ CRT television and a RCA Switcher so we could quickly f;ip back and forth. Also as mentioned we adjusted the brightness to default and then to custom levels.
We both found that this article was pretty much correct and my copy of Ghostbusters did look sharper and textured slightly better. Anyone out there who has both by now can see the difference themselves, the XBOX happens to be supperior in this case.
If you try this at home, go to the arcade machines in the HQ like the picture above, that will pretty much end the argument right there.

There’s no difference between two versions :
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/360-ps3-comparison-ghostbusters/51637
Do you have forced the PS3 settings to 1080p? if it is the case the Ps3 passed to a SD resolution if it can’t upscale…

Why did GameTrailes forget to mention the 3.9 gig with a 8 min install? Why did GameTrailes forget to mention the missing burning effect when they shot the walls? Why did GameTrailes forget to mention the PS3 version runs in sub HD (540p confirmed by the developer)? Polycount 8 comment down “Does this negate the fact that the fact that the PS3 is running at 540p while the 360 version runs at 720p”. Having someone simple run randomly through the first stage (GameTrailers comparison) reveals nothing. A more in-depth analysis is needed. So you little trick that forces the PS3 to display 1080p can’t hide the sub HD resolution.

Both versions are (nearly) identicals:
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/360-ps3-comparison-ghostbusters/51637
Do you forced the PS3 settings to 1080p ?
If it’s the case the PS3 automatically switch to SD resolution…
Hope you already knew that…

Hey people do you really believe this comparison. Don’t do you remember the comparison that Gametrailer perform, where are now. This people are so biased toward one the system that the do whatever they have to do in favor of this system.
I’m sorry for all the people that believe this propanganda.

Sorry, they’re right. You can believe whoever you want to believe but I’ve bought the game, and tested it on my own setup (the ps3 version). Admittedly, I haven’t played the 360 version, but I can indeed confirm that the ps3 version is running at 540p, which, I’ve heard stated elsewhere, is the lowest resolution for a ps3 game yet.
Honestly, the game’s still great, but the fact that Terminal Reality stuffed the ps3 port to such an extent does sting, particularly since they talked up the ps3 being the lead console and how proud of the ps3 build they were.

The biggest problem with multi platform (PS3 and 360) games is that they are only as good as the weekest component its running on! Unfortunatly thats usualy the 360! So they maxamise everything for the 360, then transfer it to the PS3, instead of building for the PS3 specificly! On multi platform the PS3 will always come second of equal at best! Its like putting a Ford Escort engine in a Farrari! It looks bloody good but runs like a bloody Escort!

This is the guy that runs Digital Foundry. And I love this quote:
“There is nothing wrong with MazingerDUDE’s (the guy who uncovered the sub HD res) analysis of Ghostbusters. I mean, the difference is night and day and I have retail code for both. It’s the worst cross-platform development I think I’ve seen in ages… like time-warping back to 2006.”
